Abstract: "This volume contains 30 chapters that provide an up-to-date account of key topics and areas of research in political psychology. In general, the chapters apply what is known about human psychology to the study of politics. Chapters draw on theory and research on biopsychology, neuroscience, personality, psychopathology, evolutionary psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, and intergroup relations. Some chapters address the political psychology of political elites-their personality, motives, beliefs, and leadership styles, and their judgments, decisions, and actions in domestic policy, foreign policy, international conflict, and conflict resolution. Other chapters deal with the dynamics of mass political behavior: voting, collective action, the influence of political communications, political socialization and civic education, group-based political behavior, social justice, and the political incorporation of immigrants. Research discussed in the volume is fuelled by a mix of age-old questions and recent world events"--

Abstract: "How were books in early modern England made, circulated, sold, stored, read, marked, altered, preserved, and destroyed? The Oxford Handbook to the History of the Book in Early Modern England provides a stimulating account of the very newest work in the field, and an exploration of how new thinking might develop. Written by scholars working at the cutting-edge of the subject, from the UK and North America, the volume combines lucidity, scholarly expertise, intellectual precision, and an imaginative structure that will enable contributors to show why the history of the book matters. This volume analyses in a lively manner the nature and role of the book in early modern England, and also considers critically how we can talk about the history of book"--

Abstract: Drugs and their illicit use have long fascinated writers and the public at large. Informed by new interdisciplinary perspectives, a growing number of academically trained historians are now approaching drugs as a wide-open topic for serious research. This handbook is an attempt by historians of drugs to take stock of the recent progress and directions of this field, utilising both a global scope and long-term historical perspective. 35 original essays simultaneously survey what is known historically about drugs across the world (in Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa) as well as illustrating their historical interconnections.

Abstract: "This chapter offers some historical and conceptual orientation to readers of the Oxford Handbook of Entertainment Theory. Departing from a brief review of ancient roots and 20th century pioneer works, we elaborate on the state and challenges of contemporary entertainment theory and research. This includes the need to develop a more explicit understanding of interrelationships among similar terms and concepts (e.g., presence and transportation), the need to reflect more explicitly on epistemological foundations of entertaiment theories (e.g., neo-behaviorism), and the need to reach back to past, even historical reasoning in communication that may be just as informative as the consideration of recent theoretical innovations from neigboring fields such as social psychology. Finally, we offer some reflections on programmatic perspectives for future entertainment theory, which should try to harmonize views from the social sciences and critical thinking, span cultural differences in entertainment processes, and keep track of the rapid technological progress of entertainment media"--

The chapters on production study the factors, activities, and people behind the music for the marketing pitch, both past and present. The section on Text focuses on analytic and historical approaches to ads in various media, and includes commentaries on musical genres in ads ranging from Western European art music to American popular genre. The last section addressing "Reception" involves the formulation of models and theories, and implementation of research methods to examine how the presence of music may influence peoples' attitudes, emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in the context of advertisements and within service environments such as stores, restaurants, and banks.

Abstract: This handbook provides a strong collection of communication- and psychology-based theories and models on media entertainment, which can be used as a knowledge resource for any academic and applied purpose. Its 41 chapters offer explanations of entertainment that audiences find in any kind of 'old' and 'new' media, from classic novels to VR video games, from fictional stories to mediated sports. As becomes clear in this handbook, the history of entertainment research teaches us not to forget that even if a field is converging to a seemingly dominant perspective, paradigm, and methodology, there are more views, alternative approaches, and different yet equally illuminative ways of thinking about the field.

Abstract: Successful communication requires optimal relevance to the target audience. Relevance theory provides an excellent model based on this insight, but until now the impact of the theory has been restricted due to an almost exclusive focus on spoken face-to-face communication. Visual and Multimodal Communication is the first book to systematically demonstrate how relevance theory can fulfill its promise to develop into an inclusive theory of communication. This book explains how relevance theory can be adapted to accommodate mass-communicative messages in pictograms, advertisements, cartoons, and comics, paving the way for a theory of communication covering different modes, media, and genres.

Abstract: "It is a truth universally acknowledged that visual information plays an ever greater role in modern communication. Undoubtedly, language remains our species' most sophisticated channel for exchanging information, but the verbal mode is increasingly complemented, sometimes even replaced, by other modes, among which the visual mode takes pride of place. Despite the fact that conveying information visually dates back to pre-historic times, accounting for visual communication in a scholarly viable manner remains difficult. One important reason for this is that while visuals (a broad term which in this book will be used to refer to all sorts of non-verbal information in static images, including not just pictures, but also for instance lay-out features, colors, typography, and motion/emotion lines in comics) usually have a structure, they do not have a grammar and vocabulary in the sense that language has. What complicates matters is that visuals are often accompanied by written language, for instance in the form of names, labels, captions, or tag lines, and it is this combination that is by far the most frequently studied variety of multimodal discourse. Insightful and programmatic work on visual and multimodal discourse has since the 1960s been done under the banner of semiotics, many of its more recent manifestations inspired by Hallidayan Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL)."--

Abstract: Mobile communication has dramatically changed over the past decade with the diffusion of smartphones. Unlike the basic 2G mobile phones, which 'merely' facilitated communication between individuals on the move, smartphones allow individuals to communicate, to entertain and inform themselves, to transact, to navigate, to take photos, and countless other things. Mobile communication has thus transformed society by allowing new forms of coordination, communication, consumption, social interaction, and access to news/entertainment. All of this is regardless of the space in which users are immersed. Set in the context of the developed and the developing world, The Oxford Handbook of Mobile Communication and Society updates current scholarship surrounding mobile media and communication. Chapters examine the communal benefits, social consequences, theoretical perspectives, and future consequences of mobile communication

Abstract: This edited volume presents both classic and contemporary conceptual, empirical, and applied perspectives on the role of comparisons with other people - a core aspect of social life - that have implications for the self-concept, opinions, subjective and physical well-being, conformity, decision-making, group behavior, education, and social movements. The volume is comprised of original chapters, authored by noted experts, divided into three sections: basic comparison processes, neighboring fields, and applications. The first section is comprised of chapters that update classic theories and present advances, such as the dominating effect of local versus global comparisons, an analysis of the psychology of competition, how comparisons across different domains influence self-concept and achievement, and the integral connections between stereotyping and comparison. The second section introduces perspectives from neighboring fields that shed new light on social comparison. These chapters range from judgment and decision science, cognitive psychology, social network theory, and animal social behavior. The third section presents chapters that describe applications of comparison, including relative deprivation; health psychology; the effects of income inequality on well-being; the relationships among social hierarchies, power, and comparison; and the interconnections of psychological processes such as comparison and differential construal that favor the status quo and can discourage social action in the face of injustice and inequity

Abstract: Where Ideas Go to Die explores the troubled relationship of US journalism and intellect. A defender of common sense, the press is irked at intellect yet often dependent on its critical autonomy. The social control of intellect by journalism is accompanied by social control of journalism in newsrooms and in classrooms where norms are cultivated. Anti-intellectualism consequently operates like dark matter in media, a presence inferred by its effects rather than directly observed or acknowledged. When journalists anticipate a punitive public, the reified resentment is no more real than the fiction of omnipotent citizens in democratic theory, yet the audience imagined compels how intellect is rendered in the news as nuisance, deviance, or object of ridicule. Interviews with 25 "dangerous professors" demonstrate how alliances in the academic-media nexus can seed intellect in newswork.

The volume includes chapters on social learning theory, control theory, self-determination theory, terror management theory, and regulatory focus theory and also presents articles from leading scholars on phenomena such as ego depletion, choice, curiosity, flow, implicit motives, and personal interests. A special section dedicated to goal research highlights achievement goals, goal attainment, goal pursuit and unconscious goals, and the goal orientation process across adulthood. Abstract: Social media platforms do not just circulate political ideas, but support computational propaganda and manipulative disinformation campaigns. Although some of these disinformation campaigns are carried out directly by individuals, most are waged by software, commonly known as bots, programmed to perform simple, repetitive, robotic tasks. Including case studies from nine countries and covering propaganda efforts over a wide array of social media platforms, this text argues that bots, fake accounts, and social media algorithms amount to a new political communications mechanism that it terms 'computational propaganda.'

Abstract: Where do spontaneous thoughts come from? It may be surprising that the seemingly straightforward answers, "from the mind" or "from the brain," are in fact an incredibly recent, modern understanding of the origins of spontaneous thought. For nearly all of human history, our thoughts-especially the most sudden, insightful, and important-were almost universally ascribed to divine or other external sources. Scientific understanding of spontaneous thought has progressed by leaps and bounds in recent years, but big questions still loom: What, exactly, is spontaneous thought? How does the human brain generate, elaborate, and evaluate its own spontaneous creations? And why do spontaneous thoughts feature so prominently in mental life? This volume brings together views from neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, history, education, contemplative traditions, and clinical practice.

Abstract: The study of social influence has been central to social psychology since its inception. In fact, research on social influence began in the 1880s, predating the coining of the term social psychology. The area's influence continued through the 1960s, when it made seminal contributions at the beginning of social psychology's golden age, but by the mid-1980s, interest in this area had waned. Now the pendulum is swinging back, as seen in growing interest in motivational accounts. The chapters in this volume, written by leading scholars, cover a variety of topics in social influence, incorporating a range of levels of analysis (intrapersonal, interpersonal, and intragroup) and both source and target effects.

Abstract: An incisive, broad-based overview of political communication, the Oxford Handbook for Political Communication assembles the leading scholars in the field of political communication to answer the question: What do we know and need to know about the process by which humans claim, lose, or share power through symbolic exchanges? Its sixty-three essays address the following five themes: contexts for viewing the field of political communication, political discourse, media and political communication, interpersonal and small group political communication, and the altered political communication landscape.

Abstract: The Five-Factor Model (FFM) is arguably the predominant model of general personality structure. There is a considerable body of research supporting its construct validity and practical application. There have been a few books specifically concerning the FFM, but to date there has not yet been a text that brings together in one location all that is known about the FFM. The book begins with an overview chapter on the FFM, followed by in-depth discussions regarding the nature, etiology, importance, and mechanisms of each of the FFM domains. The vast body of research concerning the construct-validity support for the FFM is then provided, including its robustness, factor analytic support, childhood antecedents, cross-language presence, cross-species presence, behavior and molecular genetics, and brain structure and function.

Abstract: "The latest edition of Sexuality in Adolescence provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of research and theory about adolescent sexuality in the digital generation. The book examines multiple perspectives, emphasizing social and health-related frameworks, but also covering biological and evolutionary approaches. Although the main focus is on normative development and healthy sexuality, the book does not marginalise sexual expression in adolescence, and maladaptive aspects of sexual development are also considered. The book presents global research on many key issues of our time, including the impact of media and technology on adolescent sexuality, changes in adolescent sexual behaviors and beliefs, sexual risk taking, sex education, and teen pregnancy and abortion. This fully revised and updated third edition also addresses the crucial issues of sexual diversity, sexual safety and sexual communication, including coercion, peer pressure and double standards. Sexuality in Adolescence aims to promote sexual wellbeing, and argues for the importance of the adolescent period as a time for engendering healthy sexual attitudes and practices. It will be valuable reading for students in the social and behavioural sciences who are interested in adolescent development and the topic of sexuality, as well as for professionals working with young people and families"--

Abstract: "This book, based on extensive, original research, details the changing lives of youth living in slum communities (bustees) in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta). Using young people's own photos, art and narratives, the book explores how Muslim girls and young women are contributing to, and impacted by, changing youth culture in India. We are invited into the risky world of mixed-sex dance taking place in clandestine spaces in the slums. We join young people on their journeys to find premarital romance and witness their strategic and savvy risk taking when participating in transgressive aspects of consumer culture. The book reveals how social changes in India, including greater education and employment opportunities, as well as powerful middle class Muslim reform discourses, are impacting youth the very local level. More than just fantasy we see that Bollywood is an important role model which young people consult. By carefully negotiating risks and performing multiple identities inspired by modernity, globalization and, most of all, Bollywood culture, young people actively participate in a changing India and disrupt dominant discourses about slum youth as poor victims who are excluded from social change"--
Abstract: "The reality for marginalized Muslim girls in the city of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) in India is far more complex than the one that is often constructed during discussions that view the lives of Muslim girls through a lens of repression and poverty within the patriarchal Islamic community. Based on extensive, original research, this book portrays a different and an under-represented perspective of young Muslim girls in the bustees (shanty towns) of Kolkata. Through a series of personal narratives, photos and artwork, it demonstrates that in spite of the dominant discourse surrounding their lives, the consumption and behaviour patterns of young women in these bustees challenge the monolithic representations of what it means to be a Muslim girl in Indian society. It explores the ways in which the young Muslim women live, manipulate, and resist the stereotypes of Islamic femininity by carefully negotiating the risks and performing multiple identities inspired by modernity, globalization and, most of all, Bollywood culture. Abstract: Highlighting the theoretical and methodological advances in the field of cultural neuroscience, this text also looks at the role that these scientific advances can play in understanding how to close the gap in population mental health disparities. Population mental health disparities may arise due to unequal access to healthcare as well as due to the interaction of cultural, biological, and environmental factors that produce inequalities in mental health outcomes. In this edited volume, contributors provide overviews of the current state of knowledge about how and why population health disparities exist as well as the role that a cultural neuroscience approach to the understanding of the mind, brain, and behavior can play in closing the gap in population health disparities.

Abstract: "Mobilities has become an important framework to understand and analyze contemporary social, spatial, economic and political practices. Especially as mobile media become seamlessly integrated into transportation networks, navigating urban spaces, and connecting with social networks while on the move, researchers need new approaches and methods to bring together mobilities with mobile communication and locative media. Mobile communication scholars have focused on cell phones, often ignoring broader connections to urban spaces, geography, and locational media. As a result, they emphasized virtual mobility and personalized communication as a way of disconnecting from place, location and publics. The growing pervasiveness of location-aware technology urges us to rethink the intersection among location, mobile technologies and mobility. Few studies have addressed the many transformations taking place in mobile sociality and in urban spatial processes through the appropriation of these technologies. This edited collection will address this gap by exploring the intersection of mobility, mobile communication, and locative media, as well as the implications of this for adjacent fields such as mobile art, mobile gaming, architecture, design, and urban planning"--

Abstract: "Focuses upon fundamental axioms in audience and consumer, media and marketing studies in the context of Malaysia. This is a country with a multi-cultural nation, and such diversity in culture proves an intricate culture nuance for the understanding of consumption. The work analyses Chinese, Indian, Indigenous, and Malay Malaysian citizen-consumers immersed in their participatory or promotional media. In Part 1, the author provides a clarifying account of core topics in social media studies. For example, what is the process of authoring (and reading) participatory media such as Twitter? How do promotional video on social media sites like YouTube present a brand's identity? Does engaging with social media emancipate? In the second part of the book, these cultural questions are applied to the situation in Malaysia. Theory is elucidated here by exploring audience narratives as consumers and citizens in Internet genres from chat room (e.g. Messenger) to micro-blogging. Setting mall and media visiting side by side as metaphor and mirror of each other enables a behavioural analysis, shaped by the philosophical psychology of understanding of Heidegger's hermeneutics. Recently rebranded as the 'practices perspective' on human activity, this realist model of how we achieve intelligible everyday interaction is closely emulated by other theorists and informs disciplines from business to sociology. Presenting a highly innovative approach to studying the consumption and structuring of media reception and use, this book applies a much more sophisticated variant of phenomenology than is generally invoked in Media Studies, Consumer Studies or related domains"--
Abstract: "Focuses upon fundamental axioms in audience and consumer, media and marketing studies in the context of Malaysia.

Abstract: This title collects a critical mass of border-crossing scholarship on the intersections of dance and theatre. Taking corporeality as an idea that unites the work and embodiment as a negotiation of power dynamics, it addresses the politics and poetics of the moving body in performance on and off stage. Contemporary stage performances have sparked global interest in new experiments between dance and theatre and this volume situates this interest in its historical context by investigating other such moments from pagan mimes of late antiquity to contemporary flash mobs and television dance contests.

Abstract: This study chronicles histories of salsa dance in the United States, starting from its incarnation as mambo in the late 1940s, through the creation of salsa as a musical genre in the 1970s, into the formation of a global salsa dance industry in the 1990s and 2000s. Equally informative for those interested in the dance's changing aesthetics and its relationship to evolving music styles and those concerned with how sociopolitical issues related to race, class, ethnicity, nationality, and gender played into this history, the text considers dance as both an object and an agent of change.

Abstract: Climate change is one of today's most important issues, presenting an intellectual challenge to the natural and social sciences. While there has been progress in natural science understanding of climate change, social science research has not been as fully developed. This collection of essays breaks new theoretical and empirical ground by presenting climate change as a thoroughly social phenomenon, embedded in our institutions and cultural practices.

Abstract: 'Modern Moves' examines the movement of American social dances between black and white cultural groups and immigrant and migrant communities during the early twentieth century. It is structured by five overlapping case studies drawn from the disparate and yet related dance scenes of Manhattan, a black Atlantic capital into which diverse people and dances flowed and intermingled, and out of which new dances were marketed globally.

Abstract: There is a robust body of knowledge suggesting that early language and literacy experiences significantly impact on future academic achievement. However, relatively little has been written with respect to the early literacy development and experiences of deaf children. Connie Mayer and Beverly J. Trezek address this need by providing an in-depth exploration of how young deaf children learn to read and write, identifying the foundational knowledge, abilities, and skills that are fundamental to this process.

Abstract: "One of the most significant and important advancements in information and communication technology over the past twenty years is the introduction and expansion of the internet. Now almost universally available the internet brings us email, global voice and video communications, research repositories, reference libraries, and almost unlimited opportunities for daily activities. Bridging geographical distances in unprecedented ways, the internet has impacted all aspects of our daily lives -from facilitating the running of businesses, the attainment of services and keeping in touch with friends and family. Accessible at any time and for many of us from our mobile phones, the internet has opened up a world of knowledge and communication platforms that we cannot now imagine living without. This book explores the concept that the internet has become a second action space for individuals. Coexisting with traditional and 'obvious' real space, the internet serves as a novel spatial platform and action space to its subscribers all over the world. Kellerman expertly discusses this notion and examines the practical integration of cyberspace with real space. Part I looks at the Internet as a platform for action and presents its relations with physical space concerning a range of uses and applications which were traditionally performed in physical space only. It discusses the idea that the Internet has become a second space and explores theoretical perspectives surrounding this notion. The internet has undeniably made humankind more efficient and connected. Part II explores the internet as an action space for human life, considering basic human needs, curiosity, identity and social relations"--

Abstract: This book is the essential guide for understanding how state power and politics are contested and exercised on social media. It brings together contributions by social media scholars who explore the connection of social media with revolutions, uprising, protests, power and counter-power, hacktivism, the state, policing and surveillance. It shows how collective action and state power are related and conflict as two dialectical sides of social media power, and how power and counter-power are distributed in this dialectic. Theoretically focused and empirically rigorous research considers the two-
