    Kurzfassung: The bent hut of a family in Malingdam/Imarin is reconstructed with the help of men and boys of the settlement. The new house, a circular building with a saddle-roof, is built with prepared materials in one day, within nine hours. Posts, beams, poles, and boards are only attached by rotan strings. Food cooked in the earth oven is distributed to the helpers.

    Kurzfassung: Uwok, a leading man in Malingdam, cultivates his taro garden at an altitude of 2100 metres: He uproots the weeds, heaps them up around the taro plants (Colocasia esculenta) as green manure, takes up sods of grass with the digging stick, and places them upside-down about the plants. Uwok harvests taro and plants the sprout again. He roasts small taro tubers in the fire for a spontaneous meal.

Er hält das Holzstück, das auf leicht brennbarem Material liegt, mit den Füßen fest. In zwei Einstellungen wird der Vorgang auch in Zeitdehnung (64 B/s) gezeigt.
    Kurzfassung: In his garden on a low plain below the settlements Uwok, a leading man in Malingdam, makes fire. He presses a split stick with the feet to the ground, passes a rotan string underneath and "saws" until glowing sawdust is dropping on the "tinder" (dried leaves) placed below. After several vain attempts (breaking of the rotan string) Uwok finally succeeds in producing a blaze.

    Kurzfassung: Sinkin, ein Junge aus Malingdam, beschäftigt sich mit dem Flächenverschränkspiel "Haus der Fledermaus" (tetim aik), indem er zwei Bananenblattstücke z. T. in schmale Streifen auflöst und ineinander verflicht. Es entsteht ein kegelförmiges Geflecht. Drei Jungen kommen hinzu und suchen ihn mit einer besseren und feineren Arbeit zu übertreffen.
    Kurzfassung: In Malingdam the boy Sinkin executes the plaiting game "house of the bat" (tetim aik). He detaches from two pieces of banana leaves narrow strips which he interlaces. He is joined by three other boys who try to surpass him by attaining a better "performance", a finer interlacing.

    Kurzfassung: Das baufällig gewordene sakrale Männerhaus wird innerhalb eines Tages mit bereitgehaltenem Baumaterial durch eine Neukonstruktion ersetzt. Etwa 50 einheimische Männer und Jungen sowie Gäste aus anderen Dörfern nehmen an dem Bau des Rundhauses mit Kegeldach teil. Die Arbeit wird von zeremoniellen Handlungen begleitet.
    Kurzfassung: Building materials, poles and planks, are partly of sacral character. They are set up at a rhythmical run, producing a state of ecstasy. Food is distributed to the workers. The new house is covered with the old roof. Finally, the sacred digging-stick is placed in the new men's house. Small spirit houses are also constructed.

    Kurzfassung: Verschiedene Einwohner aus Tuo auf Fenualoa fischen z. T. von Booten aus. Fischfang mit Pfeil und Bogen, Zugleine und Stangennetz. Angeln mit dem Fischdrachen: Fangen von Hornhechten mit dem Spinnengewebeköder, der vom Drachen an einer Köderleine über die Meeresfläche bewegt wird.
    Kurzfassung: West of the village of Tuo on Fenualoa (Ngasinue) a man shoots fish in the shallow waters of the lagoon with a bow and arrow. From the same settlement men stretch their rod nets for fishing, and move northwards and southwards along the beach of the island in order to catch the fish startled away with a towing line and some beaters in the nets held in a close semicircle. A man and his wife paddle southwards from Tuo in an outrigger canoe, across the reef and out to the sea. Here, the man flies the fishing kite, whilst the woman paddles the canoe against the wind. With the spider's web bait which is waved over the surface of the sea by a bait line hanging from the kite, garfish are caught.

    Kurzfassung: Im Buschland der Siedlung Tuo auf Fenualoa trennt ein Mann einen abgestorbenen Ast von einem Baum, spaltet ein kleines Stück davon ab, spitzt es zu, um damit auf der größeren Holzpartie unter Druck Holzmehl abzureiben. Das immer heißer werdende Holzmehl sammelt sich in der entstehenden Rinne und beginnt zu glühen.
    Kurzfassung: A man seperates a branch from a relatively dry tree in the bushland of Fenualoa (Ngasinue). He splits off a small piece which he sharpens, in order to use it for rubbing off wood-dust which gets hotter under constant pressure on the larger piece of wood, collects at the end of the trough caused, and finally begins to smoulder.

    Kurzfassung: Ein hochseetüchtiges Segelboot (Te puke) wird ins Wasser der Lagune von Tanga auf Fenualoa geschoben, mit dem großen, krebsscherenförmigen Segel getakelt und mit einem Steuerpaddel versehen. Segelmanöver Fahrtrichtungswechsel um 180° ohne Wenden des Bootes. Das Steuerpaddel bricht und wird repariert. Das Boot legt an, wird auf den Strand geschoben und abgetakelt.
    Kurzfassung: An ocean-going sailing-boat (Te puke) is pushed into the water of the lagoon, rigged with the large claw-shaped sail, and fitted with a steering paddle. Manoeuvre of changing the sailing direction by 180° without tacking the boat. The steering paddle breaks and is repaired. The boat lands, is pushed upon the beach, and unrigged.

    Kurzfassung: Nachdem sie im Meer gebadet haben, legen sich drei Männer aus dem Dorfe Mbanua ihren Tanzschmuck an. Sie wandern zum Nachbardorf Mönen und führen dort einen Zeremonialtanz aus dem Initiationskomplex auf und singen dazu.
    Kurzfassung: Prior to performing a ceremonial dance from the initiation complex, men of Mbanua (Graciosa Bay, Ndende) bathe in the sea first. Then they adorn themselves with circlets and rings on their upper arms. Helpers fasten the ear jewellery on and paint their faces. The dancers get ornamentation for their chests, dance aprons, adornment for their heads, noses and legs. Then the men walk to the neighbouring village of Möneu. There, on the village dancing ground, they perform a slow-pace circular dance to an ombla initiation chant. Then men from Möneu join in, and together they dance a "common dance". Finally the village of Möneu shows its gratitude with dishes of ceremonial pudding.

    Kurzfassung: Ein junger Mann aus der Siedlung Tuo auf Fenualoa klettert auf einen Baum und pflückt Arekanüsse für einen älteren Mann. Dieser kaut dann die von den Faserhüllen befreiten Nüsse mit Betelblättern und gebranntem gelöschtem Kalk.
    Kurzfassung: In the bushland of Fenualoa (Ngasinue) a young man scales a betel palm (Areca catechu L.) with a climbing rope to pick a bunch of nuts for an older man. The latter takes the betel nuts home and enjoys them, freeing them from the fibrous covering and then chewing them with betel leaves (Piper betle L.) and slaked lime which has also been procured. In another part of the village, an old man, similarly engaged in "betel chewing", uses a small mortar for pouding the nuts.

Spiel zweier Knaben in Huye Luang, die mit Holzschlägern den Federball einander zuschlagen, wobei er direkt aus der Luft zurückgeschlagen werden soll.
    Kurzfassung: With a cutting knife, an approximately 10 cm long missile is cut from a bamboo stick, and three docked hens-feathers as flight-feathers are fixed in the top. The game between two Miao youths then begins; they bat the "shuttle-cock" to each other with wooden racquets, the object being to keep it in mid-air.

    Kurzfassung: During the new year festivities the ceremonial ball game of the young men and the maidens is played in the village square. The partners form two lines facing each other, throw rag-balls from one line to the other, and accompany the game with recitations and songs. Nearby, the younger boys play the badmintom game, in the course of which feathered missiles of bamboo are batted to and fro with wooden raquets. In a different part of the village several boys are playing the "top-spinning game". During these games, the new year is heralded by a man shooting a flint-look musket.

    Kurzfassung: Auf dem umzäunten Tanzplatz des Dorfes Doi Muse findet am zweiten Neujahrstag eine Tanzveranstaltung statt: Die Mädchen bilden mit Zweier-, Dreier-, Vierer- oder Fünferreihen einen inneren Kreis, während die Männer in einer Kette den äußeren Kreis bilden. Der Tanz wird abwechselnd von einem Mundorgel- oder einem Lautenspieler angeführt.
    Kurzfassung: The dance takes place on a fenced-in dance-floor in the centre of which is a slight rise. In rows of two, three, four or five, the girls form an inner circle whilst the men form a chain as the outer circle. The dance, in anti-clockwise direction, is led alternatively by a mouth-organ or lute player.

    Kurzfassung: Mehrere Knaben aus Huye Luang widmen sich während der Neujahrsfeierlichkeiten dem Kreiselspiel, das in dieser Zeit rituellen Charakter hat. In den Händen tragen sie ihre Holzkreisel mit den Peitschen, deren Schnüre um den oberen zylinderförmigen Teil der Kreisel gewickelt sind. Sie werfen damit nach bereits "stehenden" Kreiseln, um diese zu Fall zu bringen oder fortzuschleudern.
    Kurzfassung: One or two tops are placed in motion on the ground. The object of the game is to knock them down by means of other tops. Whoever succeeds is the winner. If a top is hit but does not fall, the criterion becomes the length of time for which each top spins.

    Kurzfassung: Ein 12jähriger Knabe aus Huye Luang stellt aus einem Holzklotz (15 cm lang, 8 cm Durchmesser) mit einem Haumesser einen konisch zulaufenden Kreisel her, in dessen Spitze er einen Hartholznagel einsetzt. Dann stellt er eine Peitsche her, deren Schnur er um den Kreisel wickelt. Dieser wird durch Wegwerfen und Ziehen an der Peitsche in Drehung versetzt.
    Kurzfassung: A wooden block of about 15 cm length and about 8 cm in diameter is, with a chopping knife, worked up into a conic whipping top. For strengthening a nail of hard wood is put into its peak. Then a whip is made out of wooden stick and a twisted cord of fibre. With this whip, the whipping top is set rotating.

    Kurzfassung: On placing the first wooden pillars for a house a sacrifice is made to the house-spirit. When all supporting pillars are erected, the bamboo beams and joists are attached. A bamboo framework is then made for the sleeping-place. Subsequently the two ridge pillars are erected and the ridge pole laid across. The rafters and the purlins are fixed on to the rood framework which is then covered with grass mats. The ridge consists of two beams between which sharpened bamboo stakes are pierced in order to fix the grass mats on to the ridge. The ridge is adorned with turrets fixed on top of the smoke-openings. The door is set in after the walls, made of plaited bamboos, are set in.

    Kurzfassung: The upper joint of a bamboo cane of about 60 cm, with two joints, is pierced with a rod of wood. In the lower third of the cane a hole is incised with a bush knife into which hole a thin bamboo rod is diagonally introduced. The joint is sealed with tallow. The thin bamboo rod was cut off immediately to one side of a joint, thus producing a funnel-shaped form like the bowl of a pipe. Water is now poured into the thicker cane, tobacco is filled into the bowl, and the pipe is smoked.

    Kurzfassung: The poppy heads are cut open with a three-edged knife. A milky juice comes out of the incisions. The thickened milky juice which while thickening changed its colour to blackish-brown is collected with a scraper from the heads which were cut the day before. It is then wrapped up in a flower petal.

    Kurzfassung: Shows two scenes of ray hunting. In the western lagoon of Onotoa men swim and dive to hunt rays. When an animal has been speared it is transported home on a sailboat and is divided up on the beach. During the long excursion members of the crew shoot fish underwater with rubber slings and iron arrows. Mussels are caught on shore for immediate consumption. In the northern lagoon of Nonuti men are shown maneuvering their sailboat in the vicinity of a large stingray, and spearing it.

    Kurzfassung: Shows various techniques used by the people of the Gilbert Islands to fish: one man pegs his fishing lines to the shore of the lagoon on Nonouti and returns later to retrieve the catch; one man sits on a gangway near a rocky bank of Nonouti and uses mussel bait to catch fish, which he kills with a bite to the head; a man cuts his fishing rod from wood in the bush, catches small fish and hermit crabs as bait, and then angles successfully in the crevices of the reef; and in the open sea near Onotoa a man in a sailboat catches flying fish with coconut meat as bait.

    Kurzfassung: Salanang Sen Tao, ein Schamane aus Huye Luang, bringt am Neujahrstag als Oberhaupt seiner Familie ein Bittopfer an die Ahnengeister dar.
    Kurzfassung: This sacrifice addresses the ancestor spirits. In front of the entrance of the shaman's house the ritual objects are assembled on a small altar table: incense sticks, alcholic liquid in bowls, rice, and spirit paper. The shaman standing in front of the altar invokes the spirits. He throws the oracle rods to inquire whether the sacrifice has been accepted and gives the fowl to two women who slaughter it in the manner required by ritual. Blood is sprinkled on the altar, on the rice and on the spirit paper. After the fowl is boiled it is brought back to the altar table. A pair of cymbals, a burning oil lamp, and smoking incense sticks are placed next to it. The shaman comes back to the altar table and continues its invocations. He throws again the oracle rods. Finally he burns the spirit paper, picks up the oracle rods and returns into his house. Members of the family remove the altar table and carry the ritual objects to the ancestor shrine inside the house.

    Kurzfassung: Five or six stones of the saba fruit are placed in a line on the ground. Three boys throw stones of the same type at them. The object of the game is for each player to knock down as many of the stones as he can. If all the players on one side have thrown, and if any of the stones are still standing, throwing is done from the other side. This goes on until all the stones have been knocked down. The player who has knocked down the largest number of stones is the winner.

    Kurzfassung: A woman in the village of Tetua grates the meat taken from fully ripened coconuts and presses the milk out of it. The resulting mash is boiled over a fire in coconut shell halves until just the oil remains. The oil is purified, reheated, and enriched with an aromatic substance.

    Kurzfassung: Festlich gekleidete Mädchen und Männer aus Mae Tho tanzen um einen in die Erde gesteckten grünen Baum - die Mädchen in Zweierreihen in einem inneren Kreis, die Männer in einer Kette außen. Ein Mundorgel- und ein Lautenspieler führen abwechselnd den Tanz an.
    Kurzfassung: The dance is performed around a green tree stuck in the ground. The girls dance in a double-row in an inner circle, whilst the men form a chain as the outer circle. A reed organ player and a lute player take turns in leading the dance. The dance starts in a clockwise direction, changes then, and continues in an anti-clockwise direction up to the end.

    Kurzfassung: Im Dorfe Buariki baut ein Mann mit Hilfe seiner Verwandten in 10tägiger Arbeit aus Pandanusholz ein wandloses Vierpfostenhaus von rechteckigem Grundriß mit einem Giebeldach. Das Haus hat eine etwa 1 m über dem Erdboden eingebaute, durchgehende Plattform. Das Dach ist mit aus Kokospalmblättern geflochtenen Elementen gedeckt.
    Kurzfassung: Shows all of the important steps undertaken in a ten-day working period as a house is constructed in the village of Buariki on the atoll Tabiteuea. This sleeping house is built in a style which has been customary in the Gilbert Islands since the seventh century - a four-post house of rectangular design with a gable roof, no walls, and a platform built about one meter off the ground. While the men finish the frame construction the women work to make roof coverings from old coconut palm leaves which are tied to the lattice work.

    Kurzfassung: Am Tage vor dem Neujahrsfest führt Kee Seng Tao, ein Schamane aus Huye Luang, eine rituelle Schlachtung für seine eigene Familie als Bittopfer an die Ahnengeister durch.
    Kurzfassung: A sacrifice to the ancestor spirits. The ritual objects are arranged on an altar table in front of the house. The shaman invokes the spirits. His body is moved convulsively indicating that he gets possessed by the spirits. After having cpmpleted the invocation he throws oracle rods to inquire whether the sacrifice has been accepted. An animal sacrifice is then performed consisting in the slaughtering of a hog, the blood of which is finally sprinkled over the altar. The hog is then scalded, its bristles removed, it is washed in the river and cut up. Its head is placed on the altar, in front of which the shaman renews his invocations and throws the oracle rods once more. Finally, members of the family remove the altar.

    Kurzfassung: An experienced boat builder from the atoll Onotoa demonstrates the techniques used to attach a mat sail to a boat with strips of pandanus leaves. After the spar and boom are in place the sail is tested with various boat maneuvers.

    Kurzfassung: In der Siedlung Tetua spielen einige Männer und Jungen mit einem aus Pandanusblattstreifen geflochtenen, kubischen Ball. Sie formen einen Kreis, in dessen Mitte ein Mann steht. Der Ball wird mit dem Fuß in beliebiger Richtung weitergegeben.
    Kurzfassung: Men and young boys of the village Tetua build a ring and play this game against one another with a cubical "ball" made of plaited palm leaves. The ball is kicked into the air. One person stands in the middle and can therefore pass the ball along to others in an arbitrary manner, all done by kicking. There is no point system and no winner.

Members of the teams take individual turns kicking the ball in the air, over and over, until the ball finally falls to the ground. The team with the highest number of kicks is the winner.

An diesen Schwimmkörper binden zwei Männer zur Stabilisierung Längshölzer und Querstreben an. Nach Anbringen des Auslegergeschirrs und eines Schwimmers wird dieses Einmannfischerboot ausprobiert.
    Kurzfassung: A woman from the atoll Nonouti plaits a long basket from a large coconut palm leaf. Men fill this vessel with empty coconuts so that it will float and attach a support device for stabilization. This one-man craft is used for fishing in the lagoon.

    Kurzfassung: Gives a complete overview of the 19 working days needed to build a sleeping house on Niutao. The work is initiated by the master house builder who supervises the construction. The structure is a four-post house of rectangular design which has a large gabled roof and a straight ridge. Timber is cut from the surrounding bush; individual pieces are tied together with coconut-fiber cord. The roof is made up of treated pandanus leaves.

    Kurzfassung: Shows all of the important phases of construction as a master boat builder and his people build an outrigger boat in the old style of Niutao. Trees are felled and individual parts are cut out of them - the hull, bow and stern pieces, planks, outrigger, etc. Precision and the assembly process are done and coconut-fiber cord is used to connect the pieces. After eight working days the craft is finished; a feast is held, and the boat is tested in the open sea.

Anschließend pflegt er ältere Pulaka, indem er Haltestäbe in den Boden steckt, diese mit geflochtenen Ringen zusammenhält und Gründüngung dazugibt.
    Kurzfassung: Specially cultivated taro pits are used to grow a crude variety of dry taro (pulaka) on the coral island of Niutao. Typical cultivation work is shown here: girls collect leaves for the foundation; an old man harvests a pulaka tuber and plants the resulting stalks; and a one-year-old plant is treated with soil and fertilizing leaves.

    Kurzfassung: Large outrigger boats equipped with poles and typical mother-of-pearl hooks take to the sea in order to catch bonitos. Flocks of sea birds indicate the presence of the fish. As the boat moves quickly across the surface the hooks are pulled along in the water. As soon as a fish swallows a hook a master fisherman uses a pole to haul the bonito into the boat.

    Kurzfassung: Nach Beschaffung von Bauholz und Kokospalmblättern im Busch für das Dach errichten mehrere Männer auf dem Siedlungsplatz in Gemeinschaftsarbeit eine 2,6 m lange, 1,75 m breite und 2 m hohe Erdofenhütte. Am zweiten Tag wird ein Erdofen für das abschließende gemeinsame Mahl angelegt.
    Kurzfassung: Wood is cut in order to be used in the construction of a simple earthoven hut done in the old style. A native uses climbing cords and standing wood for assistance in cutting leaves from a coconut palm tree; the leaves are plaited into a roof covering. On the second work day the hut is finished and plans are made for the earthoven.

    Kurzfassung: A woman shells pulaka tubers (a variety of dry taro) with a small axe and cuts them into pieces. Coconut shells are filled with the pulaka pieces and a mixture of coconut meat and milk. An earth oven is prepared in order to steam several of these "containers."
