    Abstract: 1959 entstanden mit Dave Brubecks "Time Out", John Coltranes "Giant Steps", Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue", Bill Evans' "Portrait in Jazz" und Ornette Colemans "The Shape of Jazz to Come" stilprägende Alben, die für die weitere Entwicklung des Jazz wegweisend waren. In ihnen finden sich metrische und harmonisch-melodische Konzepte sowie grundlegende Neuerungen in der Organisation des Zusammenspiels und im Umgang mit improvisierter Musik, die heute fester Bestandteil des Jazz sind. Der Autor geht den Ursprüngen und Vorläufern dieser Konzepte nach, untersucht die biografischen Bezüge der Protagonisten zu den Konzepten und zum Zeitgeist und betrachtet die Rezeptionsgeschichte der Alben.
    Abstract: The year 1959 saw the release of Dave Brubeck's "Time Out", John Coltrane's "Giant Steps", Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue", Bill Evans' "Portrait in Jazz" and Ornette Coleman's "The Shape of Jazz to Come", all style-defining albums that were groundbreaking in the development of jazz. They contain metrical and harmonic-melodic concepts as well as fundamental innovations in the organisation of ensemble playing and the handling of improvised music, which are an integral part of jazz today. The author traces the origins and antecedents of these concepts, examines the protagonists' biographical references to the concepts and the zeitgeist, and looks at the reception history of the albums.

Tackling diverse issues, such as race, class, nationalism, art, authenticity, irony, parody, romanticism, commercialism, technology, recording, and musical form and style, the book's viewpoint on artistic and cultural practices suggests new ways of thinking about jazz history. It challenges many established scholarly approaches in jazz research, providing a much-needed intervention in the current academic orthodoxies of Jazz Studies. Perhaps the most striking and distinctive aspect of the book is the extraordinary eclecticism of the wide-ranging but carefully chosen case studies and examples referenced throughout the text, from nineteenth century literature, through 1930s Broadway and film, to twentieth and twenty- first century jazz and popular music"--

    Abstract: "Focused on research within Africa and the African diaspora, contributors to this volume think through the painful iterations of trauma, systemic racism, and the vestiges of colonial oppression as well as the processes of healing and emancipation that emerge from wounded states. Their chapters explore an acoustemology of intimacy, woman-centered eroticism generated through musical performance, desire and longing in ethnographic knowledge production, and listening as intimacy. On the other end of the spectrum, authors engage with and question the fetishization of race in jazz; examine conceptions of vulgarity and profanity in movement and dance-ethnography; and address pain, trauma, and violation, whether physical, spiritual, intellectual, or political. Authors in this volume strive toward empathetic, ethical, and creative ethnographic engagements that summon vulnerability and healing. They propose pathways to aesthetic, discursive transformation by reorienting conceptions of knowledge as emergent, performative, and sonically enabled. The resulting book explores sensory knowledge that is frequently left unacknowledged in ethnographic work, advancing conversations about performed sonic and somatic modalities through which we navigate our entanglements as engaged scholars"--

Von Schütz’ Musik, bestimmt für die kurfürstliche Repräsentation und überliefert vor allem in mehreren von ihm selbst besorgten Drucksammlungen, sind überwiegend geistliche Vokalwerke erhalten. Deren Spannweite reicht von einfachen Liedsätzen über mehrchörige Psalmvertonungen und lateinische wie deutsche Motetten bis zu Stücken im modernen konzertierenden Stil. Darüber hinaus schuf Schütz mit seinen Historienkompositionen (Auferstehung, Weihnachten) und seinen drei Passionen gewichtige Beiträge zur Geschichte des Oratoriums. Zu seinen weltlichen Werken gehören neben einer frühen Sammlung italienischer Madrigale mehrere theatralische Stücke, die leider alle verloren sind.

    Abstract: Zu Beginn der 1980er Jahre entsteht innerhalb der Hip-Hop-Kultur in den USA das Beatmaking – eine Musikpraxis, die auf dem kreativen Umgang mit bereits vorhandenem Klangmaterial basiert und hauptsächlich in informellen Kontexten ausgeübt wird. In den letzten 40 Jahren hat sich das Beatmaking in enger Verbindung mit musik- und medientechnologischen Entwicklungen global verbreitet und vielfältig ausdifferenziert. Dabei hat es vor allem im Bereich der populären Musik in musikalisch-ästhetischer und technisch-praktischer Hinsicht maßgebende Impulse gesetzt.In seiner qualitativ-empirischen Studie geht Chris Kattenbeck der Frage nach, was es bedeutet, als Beatmaker*in künstlerisch kompetent zu handeln, welche Fertigkeiten und Kenntnisse dafür nötig sind und wie diese erworben und entwickelt werden. Damit liefert er grundlegende Erkenntnisse über eine bislang kaum erforschte Musikpraxis und die mit ihr verbundenen künstlerischen Strategien und Techniken, ästhetischen Ziele und Vorstellungen, Wissensformen und Lernpraktiken. Dabei zeigt sich unter anderem, dass bestimmte in der Musikpädagogik vorherrschende Verständnisse – etwa von Musiklernen oder Musiktheorie – ungeeignet sind, das Beatmaking adäquat zu erfassen. Die Studie bietet daher nicht zuletzt Anlass, diese Verständnisse zu hinterfragen und neu zu konzeptualisieren, um mit der Vielfalt musikalischer Praxen in Zukunft angemessen umgehen zu können.
