    Kurzfassung: "Through staging dialogues between scholars, activists and artists from a variety of disciplinary, geographical and historical specializations, Postcolonial and Postsocialist Dialogues explores the possible resonances and dissonances between the postcolonial and the postsocialist in feminist theorizing and practice. While postcolonial and postsocialist perspectives have been explored in feminist studies, the two analytics tend to be viewed separately. This volume brings together attempts to understand if and how postcolonial and postsocialist dimensions of the human condition - historical, existential, political, and ideological - intersect and correlate in feminist experiences, identities, and struggles. In the three sections that probe the intersections, opacities and challenges between the two discourses, the authors put under pressure what postcolonialism and postsocialism mean for feminist scholarship and activism. The contributions address the emergence of new political and cultural formations as well as circuits of bodies and capital in post-Cold War and postcolonial era in currently re-emerging neo-colonial and imperial conflicts. They engage with issues of gender, sexuality, race, migration, diasporas, indigeneity, and disability, while also developing new analytical tools such as postsocialist precarity, queer postsocialist coloniality, uneventful feminism, feminist opacity, feminist queer crip epistemologies.     Kurzfassung: The first collection of its kind, Transgender Marxism is a provocative and groundbreaking union of transgender studies and Marxist theory. Exploring trans lives and movements, the authors delve into the experience of surviving as transgender under capitalism. They explore the pressures, oppression and state persecution faced by trans people living in capitalist societies, their tenuous positions in the workplace and the home, and give a powerful response to right-wing scaremongering against 'gender ideology'. Reflecting on the relations between gender and labour, these essays reveal the structure of antagonisms faced by gender non-conforming people within society.     Kurzfassung: Disinformation and so-called fake news are contemporary phenomena with rich histories. Disinformation, or the willful introduction of false information for the purposes of causing harm, recalls infamous foreign interference operations in national media systems. Outcries over fake news, or dubious stories with the trappings of news, have coincided with the introduction of new media technologies that disrupt the publication, distribution and consumption of news -- from the so-called rumour-mongering broadsheets centuries ago to the blogosphere recently. Designating a news organization as fake, or der Lügenpresse, has a darker history, associated with authoritarian regimes or populist bombast diminishing the reputation of 'elite media' and the value of inconvenient truths. [-]In a series of empirical studies, using digital methods and data journalism, we inquire into the extent to which social media have enabled the penetration of foreign disinformation operations, the widespread publication and spread of dubious content as well as extreme commentators with considerable followings attacking mainstream media as fake.

    Kurzfassung: "This book is about environmental defenders and the violence, repression, criminalization and assassination they face while seeking to protect their land and the environment. Between 2002 and 2019, at least two thousand people were killed in 57 countries for defending their lands and the environment. Recent policy initiatives and media coverage have provided much needed attention to the protection and support of defenders, but there has so far been little scholarly work. This edited volume explains who these defenders are, what threats they face and what can be done to help support and protect them. Delving deep into the complex relations between and within communities, corporations and government authorities, the book highlights the diversity of defenders, the collective character of their struggles, the many drivers and forms of violence they are facing, as well as the importance of emotions and gendered dimensions in protests and repression. Drawing on global case studies, it examines the violence taking place around different types of development projects, including fossil fuels, agro-industrial, renewable energy, and infrastructure. The volume also examines the violence surrounding conservation projects, including through militarized wildlife protection and surveillance technologies. The book concludes with a reflection on the perspectives of defenders about the best ways to support and protect them. It contrasts these with the lagging efforts of an international community often promoting economic growth over the lives of defenders. This volume is essential reading for all interested in understanding the challenges faced by environmental defenders and how to help and support them.     Kurzfassung: Cordial Cold War examines cultural entanglements, in various forms, between two distant yet interconnected sites of the Cold War – India and the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Focusing on theatre performances, film festivals, newsreels, travel literature, radio broadcasting, cartography and art as sites of engagement, the chapters spotlight spaces of interaction that emerged in spite of, and within, the ambits of Cold War constraints. The inter-disciplinary collection sheds light on the variegated nature of translocal cultural entanglements, at work even before the GDR was officially recognized as a sovereign state by India in 1972. By foregrounding the role of actors, their practices and the sites of their entanglement, the contributions show how creative energies were mobilized to forge zones of friendship, mutual interest and envisioned solidarities. This volume situates actors from the Global South as mutual co-shapers of the cultural Cold War, therein shifting its Euro-American and Soviet epicenters to Non-Aligned India. Going beyond official state channels of international political dialogue, it locates cordiality in the micro-histories and everyday experiences of interpersonal engagements, bringing to focus a hitherto underexplored chapter of India–Germany entanglements.

    Kurzfassung: Die migrantische Mobilität im Sommer 2015 hat die europäische Flüchtlingspolitik auf den Kopf gestellt.     Kurzfassung: Moving beyond state-centric and elitist perspectives, this volume examines everyday security in the Central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan. Based on ethnographic fieldwork and written by scholars from Central Asia and beyond, it shows how insecurity is experienced, what people consider existential threats, and how they go about securing themselves. It concentrates on individuals who feel threatened because of their ethnic belonging, gender or sexual orientation.     Kurzfassung: When translation constraints between horizons of social meaning create the cardinal effect of social distinction, a pertinent sociology of multiple distinction can disclose its own reference to reality, such as that of any other context, only as a kind of »indirect reference«. Joachim Renn's analysis takes a media-theory detour: Initially it focuses on the meaning of different communication media for the formation of potential objects of reference that is logical in itself, and then it focuses on the reference claims of sociology itself. That shows: This pragmatic reconstruction of a medial »indexing of the world« does - unlike the widely-spread constructivism - justice to the realistic intuition of sociology as an empirical science

    Kurzfassung: Die Corona-Pandemie und die darauf reagierende Infektionsschutzpolitik der Bundesregierung haben eine neue Bewegung hervorgebracht: die »Querdenker«. Über die soziale Zusammensetzung, das Mediennutzungsverhalten und die Wissenspraktiken dieser Gruppe ist bisher wenig bekannt. Erstmals hat eine interdisziplinäre Gruppe von Sozialwissenschaftler_innen diese Proteste umfassend untersucht, um zu verstehen, warum die Bewegung entstanden ist, was sie bewegt und wie sie agiert. Das Buch behandelt umfassend die unterschiedlichen Protestgruppen von wirtschaftlich Betroffenen über Impfgegner_innen und Esoteriker_innen bis hin zu Verschwörungstheoretiker_innen und rechtsradikalen Protestierenden und gibt einen faszinierenden Einblick in die Welt der Querdenker, ihre Motivationen, Argumentationen und Verhaltensweisen.

    Kurzfassung: The Cuban people hold a special place in the hearts of the people of Africa. The Cuban internationalists have made a contribution to African independence, freedom, and justice, unparalleled for its principled and selfless character. As Nelson Mandela states, Cuba was a key participant in the struggle for the independence of African countries during the Cold War and the definitive ousting of colonialism from the continent. Beyond the military interventions that played a decisive role in shaping African political history, there were many-sided engagements between the island and the continent. Cuba and Africa, 1959-1994 is the story of tens of thousands of individuals who crossed the Atlantic as doctors, scientists, soldiers, students and artists. Each chapter presents a case study - from Algeria to Angola, from Equatorial Guinea to the Congo - and shows how much of the encounter between Cuba and Africa took place in non-militaristic fields: humanitarian and medical, scientific and educational, cultural and artistic. The historical experience and the legacies documented in this book speak to the major ideologies that shaped the colonial and postcolonial world, including internationalism, developmentalism and South-South cooperation. Approaching African-Cuban relations from a multiplicity of angles, this collection will appeal to an equally wide range of readers, from scholars in black Atlantic studies to cultural theorists and general readers with an interest in contemporary African history

    Kurzfassung: Medienkultur als kritische Gesellschaftsanalyse steht für einen relationalen Ansatz, der kulturelle und mediale Praktiken als soziale Auseinandersetzungen erforscht. Im Zentrum der Diskussion stehen die sich daraus ergebenden Transformationen sowie ihre interdisziplinäre Verortung an der Schnittstelle zwischen Medien- und Kulturtheorie, Cultural Studies, Soziologie und Populärkulturforschung. Der Band versammelt Studien zu unterschiedlichen (medien-)kulturellen Phänomenen wie Filmen, Videos, Kunst, Games, Selfies, Shitstorms, Fake News, digitale Selbstvermessung sowie anderen populären, Jugend- und Subkulturen. Die theoretischen, methodologischen und empirischen Beiträge • befassen sich mit der Frage, was das transdisziplinäre Projekt der Cultural Studies zu leisten vermag angesichts aktueller gesellschaftspolitischer Entwicklungen wie z.B. Globalisierung und Populismus, • analysieren Filme und Populärkulturen als Seismografen gesellschaftlicher Transformationsprozesse, • fragen nach dem Eigensinn von Kultur und ihren sozialen Akteur*innen, • behandeln den Zusammenhang von soziokulturellen Dynamiken und gegenwärtigem Medienwandel (Digitalisierung, Datafizierung) und • diskutieren neue mediale Öffentlichkeiten und digitale Partizipationsformen. Damit würdigt der Band das Werk von Rainer Winter, das eine gesellschaftskritische Medien- und Kulturanalyse vertritt.
