Michael Gottlob verdeutlicht die geschichtspolitischen Strategien, die die Konfrontation zwischen der hindunationalistischen Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) und der säkularen Kongresspartei (INC) prägen. Es zeigt sich: Der Streit um den Umgang mit der indischen Geschichte reicht tief in die Selbstverständigungsprozesse der Inder*innen unter dem Kolonialismus zurück.

    Kurzfassung: Started in the wake of George Zimmerman's 2013 acquittal in the death of Trayvon Martin, the #BlackLivesMatter movement has become a powerful and incendiary campaign demanding redress for the brutal and unjustified treatment of black bodies by law enforcement in the United States. The movement is only a few years old, but as Christopher J. Lebron argues in this book, the sentiment behind it is not; the plea and demand that 〈"Black Lives Matter〉" comes out of a much older and richer tradition arguing for the equal dignity-and not just equal rights-of black people. The Making of Black Lives Matter presents a condensed and accessible intellectual history that traces the genesis of the ideas that have built into the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Drawing on the work of revolutionary black public intellectuals, including Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells, Langston Hughes, Zora Neal Hurston, Anna Julia Cooper, Audre Lorde, James Baldwin, and Martin Luther King Jr., Lebron clarifies what it means to assert that 〈"Black Lives Matter〉" when faced with contemporary instances of anti-black law enforcement. He also illuminates the crucial difference between the problem signaled by the social media hashtag and how we think that we ought to address the problem. As Lebron states, police body cameras, or even the exhortation for civil rights mean nothing in the absence of equality and dignity. To upset dominant practices of abuse, oppression and disregard, we must reach instead for radical sensibility. Radical sensibility requires that we become cognizant of the history of black thought and activism in order to make sense of the emotions, demands, and argument of present-day activists and public thinkers.     Kurzfassung: "The rapid rise of emerging economies has produced deep-ranging changes in the global order during recent decades. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, the bipolar confrontation of the Cold War seemed to be replaced by a universalized model of political liberalism and economic neo-liberalism. In recent years, however, rising nationalism and protectionism indicate the end of unfettered globalization, a looming crisis of liberal democracy, and a return to ideologies of "systemic competition", especially vis-a-vis China. Against this background, the proposed volume takes a fresh look at the evolution of governance models in Western and non-Western civilizations - Africa, India, China, and the Muslim world in particular. These models have been largely self-contained and without intensive interaction for a long time. In the wake of globalization, systems, ideologies, and political values have become part of global discourse, eventually turning into what Samuel Huntington called a "clash of civilizations." The chapters in this volume offer perspectives on the diversity of civilizations of governance as a base for a new multilateralism in the global context. The contributions explore relevant theoretical concepts of transnational governance, law, and multiple modernity. The empirical focus is on analyzing different governance systems in non-Western civilizations and Europe, including national states and transnational institutions, traditions, and networks.     Kurzfassung: "This volume explores the shifts in how civil disobedience has come to be theorized, defined, understood and practiced in contemporary politics. As social activism takes increasingly global forms, the goals of individuals and groups who view themselves as disobedient activists today can be defined in broader cultural terms than before, and their relationship to law and violence can be ambiguous. Civil disobedience may no longer be entirely nonviolent, its purposes no longer necessarily serve progressive or emancipatory agendas. Its manifestations often blur the lines established in "classic", philosophically justified, and self-regulatory forms as epitomized in mass nonviolent protests of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, and theories of Arendt, Rawls and Dworkin. How civil disobedience operates has changed over the years, and this volume unpacks its many contemporary lives. It discusses new theoretical and political dilemmas and paradoxes through empirical cases and practical examples from Europe, the US, and South Asia, which enables a "mirroring" perspective for the challenges and complexities of civil disobedience in different parts of the world. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf der Perspektive der Nationalstaaten, um Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede, Parallelen und Sonderwege zu identifizieren, Vergleiche zu ermöglichen und transnationale Prozesse zu erkennen. Vor allem zwischen den west- und osteuropäischen Ländern lassen sich dabei unterschiedliche Phasen erkennen zwischen Nachkriegs- und postkolonialer Migration, Arbeitsmigration, Binnenmigration, vor allem in der Sowjetunion, Ein- und Auswanderungsprozessen nach dem Zusammenbruch der Sowjetimperiums und der Migration aus den Bürgerkriegsstaaten, vor allem aus Syrien und Afghanistan, nach 2010.

    Kurzfassung: Vor 120 Jahren nahmen im ostsächsischen Bautzen zwei moderne Gefängnisse ihren Betrieb auf. Bis heute prägen die Haftanstalten Bautzen I und Bautzen II das Bild der Stadt an der Spree als Ort von politischer Inhaftierung und Verfolgung im 20. Jahrhundert. Der Sammelband verbindet aktuelle Einzelstudien zur Geschichte der beiden Gefängnisse mit ausgewählten Aspekten moderner Gedenkstättenarbeit. Die Autorinnen und Autoren nehmen die Häftlingszwangsarbeit in Bautzen während des Nationalsozialismus in den Blick, den personellen Neuanfang nach 1950 sowie die Bedeutung von Häftlingschören im Strafvollzug der frühen DDR. Spione und Verräter im "Stasi-Knast" spielen ebenso eine Rolle wie das interne Strafsystem und die bisher von der Forschung vernachlässigten inhaftierten Frauen. Den Blick in die Gegenwart richten weitere Beiträge zur Entstehung der Gedenkstätte, zur pädagogischen Vermittlungsarbeit und zu den denkmalpflegerischen Herausforderungen am historischen Ort seit 1990.

    Kurzfassung: Examines, then employs the metaphor of cultural impact in an effort to understand how culture works in the German-speaking world. How to gauge the impact of cultural products is an old question, but bureaucratic agendas such as the one recently implemented in the UK to measure the impact of university research (including in German Studies) are new. Impact isseen as confirming a cultural product's value for society -- not least in the eyes of cultural funders. Yet its use as an evaluative category has been widely criticized by academics. Rather than rejecting the concept of impact, however, this volume employs it as a metaphor to reflect on issues of transmission, reception, and influence that have always underlain cultural production but have escaped systematic conceptualization. It seeks to understand how culture works in the German-speaking world: how writers and artists express themselves, how readers and audiences engage with the resulting products, and how academics are drawn to analyze this dynamic process. Formulating such questions afresh in the context of German Studies, the volume examines both contemporary cultural discourse and the way it evolves more generally. It links such topics as authorial intention, readerly reception, intertextuality, andmodes of perception to less commonly studied phenomena, such as the institutional practices of funding bodies, that underpin cultural discourse. By reminding us of the fundamental importance of placing Indigenous politics, histories, and ontologies at the center of our social movements, Indigenous Resurgence positions environmental justice within historical, social, political, and economic contexts, exploring the troubling relationship between colonial and environmental violence and reframing climate change and environmental degradation through an anticolonial lens.

    Kurzfassung: "Republicans and Democrats increasingly distrust, avoid, and wish harm upon those from the other party. To make matters worse, they also increasingly reside among like-minded others and are part of social groups that share their political beliefs. All of this can make expressing a dissenting political opinion hard. Yet digital and social media have given people new spaces for political discourse and community, and more control over who knows their political beliefs and who does not. With Democracy Lives in Darkness, Van Duyn looks at what these changes in the political and media landscape mean for democracy. She uncovers and follows a secret political organization in rural Texas over the entire Trump presidency. The group, which organized out of fear of their conservative community in 2016, has a confidentiality agreement, an email listserv and secret Facebook group, and meets in secret every month. By building relationships with members, she explores how and why they hide their beliefs and what this does for their own political behavior and for their community. Drawing on research from communication, political science, and sociology along with survey data on secret political expression, she finds that polarization has led even average partisans to hide their political beliefs from others. And although intensifying polarization will likely make political secrecy more common, she argues that this secrecy is not just evidence that democracy is hurting, but that it is still alive; that people persist in the face of opposition and that this matters if democracy is to survive"--

    Kurzfassung: This anthology addresses the question of how anti-Semitism appears and is expressed in modern music. As a ‘negative guiding idea of modernity’, anti-Semitism can be found in all musical genres and is conveyed on different levels, be it through song lyrics, album covers, music videos, stage performances, through the musical form or style itself, or the ideological and structural integration of musicians into the extreme rightwing scene, all the way to the influence of entire music scenes through the anti-Semitic BDS campaign.     Kurzfassung: "Black Neo-Victoriana is the first book-length study on contemporary re-imaginations of Blackness in the long nineteenth century. Located at the intersections of postcolonial studies, Black studies, and neo-Victorian criticism, this interdisciplinary collection engages with the global trend to reimagine and rewrite Black Victorian subjectivities that have been continually marginalised in both historical and cultural discourses. Contributions cover a range of media, from novels and drama to film, television and material culture, and draw upon cultural formations such as Black fandom, Black dandyism, or steamfunk. The book evidences how neo-Victorian studies benefits from reading re-imaginations of the long nineteenth century vis-à-vis Black epistemologies, which unhinge neo-Victorianism's dominant spatial and temporal axes and reroute them to conceive of the (neo-)Victorian through Blackness"

    Kurzfassung: Afropolitan Encounters: Literature and Activism in London and Berlin explores what Afropolitanism does. Mobile people of African descent use this term to address their own lived realities creatively, which often includes countering stereotypical notions of being African. Afropolitan practices are enormously heterogeneous and malleable, which constitutes its strengths and, at the same time, creates tensions. This book traces the theoretical beginnings of Afropolitanism and moves on to explore Afropolitan practices in London and Berlin. Afropolitanism can take different forms, such as that of an identity, a political and ethical stance, a dead–end road, networks, a collective self–care practice or a strategic label. In spite of the harsh criticism, Afropolitanism is attractive for people to deal with the meanings of Africa and Africanness, questions of belonging, equal rights and opportunities. While not a unitary project, the vast variety of Afropolitan practices provide approaches to contemporary political problems in Europe and beyond. In this book, Afropolitan practices are read against the specific context of German and British colonial histories and structures of racism, the histories of Black Europeans, and contemporary right–wing resurgence in Germany and England, respectively.

    Kurzfassung: Die afro-amerikanische Feministin bell hooks verknüpft in diesem Buch einen sehr persönlichen und autobiografischen Zugang mit einer grundlegenden Gesellschaftsanalyse und Kulturkritik. hooks denkt Klasse stark vom Alltag und von sozialen Bewegungen her, die sie im Hinblick auf ihre Klassenpolitiken kritisiert und auf ihre Potenziale hin befragt. Dabei liefert sie differenzierte und empirisch fundierte Analysen zu den Verknüpfungen von Rassismus, Sexismus und Kapitalismus/Klassismus. Ausgangspunkt sind häufig ihre persönlichen Erfahrungen: als Schwarze Frau aus der Arbeiter innenklasse ("working class") der Südstaaten der USA und als "Klassenwechslerin", die sich in einem weißen akademischen Mittelklasse-Umfeld bewegt - und ihren Wurzeln treu bleiben will. Sie schreibt über den Mangel an Wohnraum und Geld als Kind, über die selbstverständliche gegenseitige Unterstützung in ihrem Schwarzen Herkunftsumfeld, über den Stolz auf die Arbeiter innenklasse und das gleichzeitige Nicht-Reden über Klasse.

    Kurzfassung: "Caring for Liberalism brings together new essays that explore how liberal political theory in its many guises might be modified or transformed to take the fact of dependency on board. In addressing the place of care in liberalism, this collection advances the idea that care ethics can help respond to legitimate criticisms from feminists who argue that liberalism ignores issues of race, class, and ethnicity. The essays do no simply add care to existing liberal political frameworks; rather, they explore how integrating dependency might leave core components of the traditional liberal philosophical apparatus intact, while transforming other aspects of it. Additionally, the contributors address the design of social and political institutions through which care is given and received, with special attention paid to non-Western care practices. This book will appeal to scholars working on liberalism in philosophy, political science, law, and public policy, and is a must-read for feminist political philosophers"

Gibt es eine "postsowjetische Identität", ein gemeinsames Selbstverständnis der Menschen in diesen Ländern, das sich zugleich als Bewältigung der sowjetischen Vergangenheit und als ein Aufbruch zu neuen Orientierungen verstehen lässt? Gibt es – jenseits von Nationalismus, Romantisierung oder Abrechnung – eine postsowjetische Vision der künftigen Gesellschaften, die sich vom Blick auf die Vergangenheit lösen kann? Welcher Menschentypus folgt dem "homo sovieticus" und wieviel vom Sowjetmenschen besteht noch fort in diesem? Wie schlagen sich die wirtschaftlichen, politischen, sozialen und kulturellen Umbrüche der postsowjetischen Gesellschaften nieder in der Sicht der Bürger*innen auf ihre Lage, in ihren Erwartungen, Hoffnungen und Idealen, in ihrem Lebenssinn und ihren Wertorientierungen? Finden die jüngeren Generationen die Freiheit und den Mut für neue Utopien und woher nehmen sie das Fundament für diese? Zu diesen Fragen versammelt das vorliegende Buch – jeweils in russischer und in deutscher oder englischer Sprache – sozialwissenschaftliche Beiträge aus Russland, Armenien, Kirgisistan, Litauen, dem Balkan und Deutschland.
    Kurzfassung: Спустя тридцать лет после распада Советского Союза кажется оправданным подвести итоги и изучить вопрос о том, какие изменения претерпели в настоящее время бывшие советские республики и какие политические модели и ценности, передающие смысл жизни, принесла история преобразований. Есть ли "постсоветская идентичность", у людей этих стран общее представление о себе, которое можно трактовать как примирение с советским прошлым, так и как путь к новым ориентациям? Есть ли – помимо национализма, романтизации или расправы с прошлым – постсоветское видение будущего общества, которое может отвлечься от взгляда на прошлое? Какой тип человека следует за «homo sovieticus» и сколько в нем еще осталось от советского человека? Как экономические, политические, социальные и культурные потрясения в постсоветских обществах отражаются на взглядах граждан на свое положение, на их ожидания, надежды и идеалы, на их смысл жизни и их ценностные ориентации? Найдёт ли молодое поколение свободу и смелость для новых утопий и что они возьмут за основу при их формировании?

    Kurzfassung: Dreißig Jahre nach dem Ende der Sowjetunion scheint es berechtigt, eine Zwischenbilanz zu ziehen und die Frage zu beleuchten, welchen Wandel die Gesellschaften der ehemals sowjetischen Länder inzwischen vollzogen haben und welche politischen Leitbilder und Lebenssinn vermittelnden Werte die Geschichte der Transformation hervorgebracht hat. Gibt es eine "postsowjetische Identität", ein gemeinsames Selbstverständnis der Menschen in diesen Ländern, das sich zugleich als Bewältigung der sowjetischen Vergangenheit und als ein Aufbruch zu neuen Orientierungen verstehen lässt? Gibt es - jenseits von Nationalismus, Romantisierung oder Abrechnung - eine postsowjetische Vision der künftigen Gesellschaften, die sich vom Blick auf die Vergangenheit lösen kann? Welcher Menschentypus folgt dem "homo sovieticus" und wieviel vom Sowjetmenschen besteht noch fort in diesem? Wie schlagen sich die wirtschaftlichen, politischen, sozialen und kulturellen Umbrüche der postsowjetischen Gesellschaften nieder in der Sicht der Bürger*innen auf ihre Lage, in ihren Erwartungen, Hoffnungen und Idealen, in ihrem Lebenssinn und ihren Wertorientierungen? Finden die jüngeren Generationen die Freiheit und den Mut für neue Utopien und woher nehmen sie das Fundament für diese? Zu diesen Fragen versammelt das vorliegende Buch - jeweils in russischer und in deutscher oder englischer Sprache - sozialwissenschaftliche Beiträge aus Russland, Armenien, Kirgisistan, Litauen, dem Balkan und Deutschland.
    Kurzfassung: Спустя тридцать лет после распада Советского Союза кажется оправданным подвести итоги и изучить вопрос о том, какие изменения претерпели в настоящее время бывшие советские республики и какие политические модели и ценности, передающие смысл жизни, принесла история преобразований. Есть ли "постсоветская идентичность", у людей этих стран общее представление о себе, которое можно трактовать как примирение с советским прошлым, так и как путь к новым ориентациям? Есть ли – помимо национализма, романтизации или расправы с прошлым – постсоветское видение будущего общества, которое может отвлечься от взгляда на прошлое? Какой тип человека следует за «homo sovieticus» и сколько в нем еще осталось от советского человека? Как экономические, политические, социальные и культурные потрясения в постсоветских обществах отражаются на взглядах граждан на свое положение, на их ожидания, надежды и идеалы, на их смысл жизни и их ценностные ориентации? Найдёт ли молодое поколение свободу и смелость для новых утопий и что они возьмут за основу при их формировании?

    Kurzfassung: A view of transatlantic slavery's afterlife and modern Blackness through the lens of age. Although more than fifty years apart, the murders of Emmett Till and Trayvon Martin share a commonality: Black children are not seen as children. Time and time again, excuses for police brutality and aggression-particularly against Black children- concern the victim "appearing" as a threat. But why and how is the perceived "appearance" of Black persons so completely separated from common perceptions of age and time? Black Age: Oceanic Lifespans and the Time of Black Life posits age, life stages, and lifespans as a central lens through which to view Blackness, particularly with regard to the history of transatlantic slavery. Focusing on Black literary culture of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, Habiba Ibrahim examines how the history of transatlantic slavery and the constitution of modern Blackness has been reimagined through the embodiment of age. She argues that Black age-through nearly four centuries of subjugation- has become contingent, malleable, and suited for the needs of enslavement. As a result, rather than the number of years lived or a developmental life stage, Black age came to signify exchange value, historical under-development, timelessness, and other fantasies borne out of Black exclusion from the human.Ibrahim asks: What constitutes a normative timeline of maturation for Black girls when "all the women"-all the canonically feminized adults-"are white"? How does a "slave" become a "man" when adulthood is foreclosed to Black subjects of any gender? Black Age tracks the struggle between the abuses of Black exclusion from Western humanism and the reclamation of non-normative Black life, arguing that, if some of us are brave, it is because we dare to live lives considered incomprehensible within a schema of "human time.
