    Kurzfassung: Biographical note: Sebastian Günther, Ph.D. (1989) is Professor and Chair of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Göttingen. Germany. He has published extensively on the intellectual history of Islam, including Representations and Visions of Homeland in Modern Arabic Literature (co-ed., Hildesheim 2016) and Ideas, Images, and Methods of Portrayal: Insights into Classical Arabic Literature and Islam (ed., Leiden 2005). Todd Lawson, Ph.D. (1989) is Professor Emeritus of Islamic Thought at the University of Toronto. He has published widely on Quranic exegesis, mysticism, Shi‘ism, and Quranic literary problems. Recent publications include articles such as Friendship, Illumination and the Water of Life (2016), Joycean Modernism in a 19th century Qur’an commentary (2015), The Qur’an and Epic (2014) and the monograph Gnostic Apocalypse in Islam (London 2012). Christian Mauder is a PhD student at the Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies of the University of Göttingen, Germany. He has published several studies on the intellectual, cultural and religious history of Mamluk and Ottoman Egypt, including the monograph Gelehrte Krieger: Die Mamluken als Träger arabischsprachiger Bildung (Hildesheim 2012).

    Kurzfassung: In this book, David Patterson offers original insights into the dynamics that underlie the phenomenon of endemic antisemitism, arguing that in all its manifestations, antisemitism is fundamentally anti-Judaism. Structured in a unique matrix of chapters that are linked historically and theoretically, his book elucidates the interconnections that tie antisemitism with the Holocaust, as well as the Judaism that the Nazis sought to obliterate from the world. As Patterson demonstrates this is an ongoing effort and is the basis of today's antisemitism. Spelling out the historical, theological, and philosophical viewpoints that led to the Holocaust and that are with us even now, he offers insights into the basis of the hatred of Jews that permeates much of today's world.     Kurzfassung: This Element brings together the history of emotions and temporalities, offering a new perspective on both. Time was often imagined as a movement from the past to the future: the past is gone and the future not yet here. Only present-day subjects could establish relations to other times, recovering history as well as imagining and anticipating the future. In a movement paralleling the emphasis on the porous self, constituted by emotions situated not inside but between subjects, this Element argues for a porous present, which is open to the intervention of ghosts coming from the past and from the future. What needs investigating is the flow between times as much as the creation of boundaries between them, which first banishes the ghosts and then denies their existence. Emotions are the most important way through which subjects situate and understand themselves in time

    Kurzfassung: Bildungschancen sind in allen westlichen Gesellschaften sozial ungleich verteilt, ebenso wie die Chancen auf ein gesundes Aufwachsen von Kindern. Ausgehend von der Annahme, dass Gesundheit eine bildungsrelevante Ressource ist, untersucht Julia Tuppat mit Hilfe einer theoriegeleiteten empirischen Studie Effekte früher gesundheitlicher Beeinträchtigungen auf Bildungsergebnisse. Hierbei zeigt sich, dass gesundheitliche Ungleichheit im Kindesalter einen zusätzlichen Wirkpfad der intergenerationalen Transmission von ungleichen Bildungschancen darstellt.     Kurzfassung: Islamic foundations (waqf, pl. awqāf) have been an integral part of Yemeni society both for managing private wealth and as a legal frame for charity and public infrastructure. This book focuses on four socially grounded fields of legal knowledge: fiqh, codification, individual waqf cases, and everyday waqf related knowledge. It combines textual analysis with ethnography seeking to understand how Islamic law is approached, used, produced and validated in selected topics of waqf law where the tensions are strong between ideals and pragmatic rules. The study analyses central Zaydī fiqh works such as the Sharḥ al-azhār-cluster, in addition to imamic decrees, fatwās, and waqf documents, mostly from Zaydī, Northern Yemen

    Kurzfassung: In Formation of a Religious Landscape: Shi'i Higher Learning in Safavid Iran, Maryam Moazzen offers the first systematic examination of Shi'i educational institution and practices by exploring the ways in which religious knowledge was produced, authenticated, and transmitted in the second half of Safavid rule (1588-1722). By analyzing the deeds of endowment of the Madrasa-yi Sulṭānī and other mosque-madrasas built by the Safavid elite, this study sheds light on the organizing mechanisms and structures utilized by such educational foundations. Based on the large number of ijazās and other primary sources including waqfiyyas, biographical dictionaries and autobiographies, this study also reconstructs the Safavid madrasas' curriculum and describes the pedagogical methods used to transmit religious knowledge as well as issues that faced Shi'i higher learning in early modern times

    Kurzfassung: This is the first full treatment of Jewish childhood in the Roman world. It follows minors into the spaces where they lived, learned, played, slept, and died and examines the actions and interaction of children with other children, with close-kin adults, and with strangers, both inside and outside the home. A wide range of sources are used, from the rabbinic rules to the surviving painted representations of children from synagogues, and due attention is paid to broader theoretical issues and approaches. Hagith Sivan concludes with four beautifully reconstructed 'autobiographies' of specific children, from a boy living and dying in a desert cave during the Bar-Kokhba revolt to an Alexandrian girl forced to leave her home and wander through the Mediterranean in search of a respite from persecution. The book tackles the major questions of the relationship between Jewish childhood and Jewish identity which remain important to this day

    Kurzfassung: Michail Logvinov stellt das weit verbreitete Verständnis des Salafismus als Vorstufe zum Terrorismus oder gar als "ideologisches Fundament des Islamischen Staates" in Frage. Die via Radikalisierungsdiskurs hergestellte Kausalität gehört auf den Prüfstand, während es eines Paradigmenwechsels in der Radikalisierungsforschung bedarf. Der persönlichkeitsbezogene Radikalisierungsdiskurs ist nicht imstande, prospektiv aufzuzeigen, unter welchen Umständen die gefährdeten Personen gefährlich werden. Als performativer Sicherheitsdiskurs bewirkt die Radikalisierungsforschung jedoch, dass die Gefährdeten im Sinne des Risikoparadigmas zur Gefahr bzw. zu "Gefährdern" erklärt werden. Zugleich mangelt es am Verständnis religiöser Zusammenhänge und Diskurse im zeitgenössischen Dschihadismus.​

    Kurzfassung: Die sprachliche Integration von Jugendlichen aus Einwandererfamilien mit ihren spezifischen familialen, schulischen und gesellschaftlichen Voraussetzungen steht im Mittelpunkt der Analyse von Norbert Heimken. Für die Beurteilung der realen Sprachkompetenzen und ihrer spezifischen Bedingungen werden in der Studie eigene Kompetenzmessungen verwendet. Die aktualisierte und erweiterte Untersuchung stützt sich auf Auswertungen von etwa 1000 Sprachkompetenztests, die bei Jugendlichen mit und ohne Migrationshintergrund in verschiedenen Schulformen durchgeführt wurden. Korrelationen zu Bildungshintergrund, Freizeitaktivitäten und familialem Sprachverhalten werden dabei im Blick auf Integrationskonzepte und pädagogische wie gesellschaftliche Handlungsperspektiven untersucht.     Kurzfassung: An innovative examination of American society, culture, and politics, The Age of Charisma argues that the modern relationship between American leaders and followers grew out of a unique group of charismatic social movements prominent in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Drawing on hundreds of letters and testimonials, Jeremy C. Young illustrates how 'personal magnetism' in public speaking shaped society by enabling a shift from emotionally-inaccessible leadership to emotionally-available leadership. This charismatic speaking style caused a rapid transformation in the leader-follower relationship, creating an emotional link between speakers and listeners, and the effects of this social transformation remain with us today. Young argues that ultimately, charismatic movements enhanced American democracy by encouraging the personalization of leadership - creating a culture in which today's leaders appeal directly to Americans through mass media
