Mickaël Labbé zeigt, wie ganze Bevölkerungsteile durch eine kaum wahrnehmbare Architektur der Verachtung als unerwünscht ausgeschlossen werden. Überwachungskameras, Bänke mit geneigter Sitzfläche oder trennenden Armlehnen, auf denen man nicht schlafen kann, und andere subtile Maßnahmen erschweren insbesondere sozial marginalisierten Menschen wie Obdachlosen das Leben in der Stadt.Gegen diese Tendenz führt Labbé die Notwendigkeit ins Feld, eine Stadt neu zu erfinden, die sich an uns alle richtet. Anstelle von ausschließenden Mechanismen braucht es Räume, in denen wir unsere Verbindungen wieder enger knüpfen können. Denn eine Stadt, die nicht mehr auf ihre gemeinschaftliche Nutzung ausgerichtet ist, die nur aus homogenen Ghettos besteht, wo wir einander nicht mehr konfrontativ und in aller Unterschiedlichkeit begegnen können, ist ein Verlust für uns alle.Labbé beschreibt funktionierende Beispiele einer "Architektur der Anerkennung" und plädiert für eine Wiederaneignung des öffentlichen Raums

    Abstract: The English folk revival cannot be understood when divorced from the history of post-war England, yet the existing scholarship fails to fully engage with its role in the social and political fabric of the nation. Postwar Politics, Society and the Folk Revival in England is the first study to interweave the story of a gentrifying folk revival with the socio-political tensions inherent in England's postwar transition from austerity to affluence. Julia Mitchell skillfully situates the English folk revival in the context of the rise of the new left, the decline of heavy industry, the rise of local, regional and national identities, the 'Americanisation' of English culture and the development of mass culture. In doing so, she demonstrates that the success of the English folk revival derived from its sense of authenticity and its engagement with topical social and political issues, such as the conflicted legacy of the Welfare State, the fight for nuclear disarmament and the fallout of nationalization. In addition, she shrewdly compares the US and British revival to identify the links but also what was distinctive about the movement in Britain. Drawing on primary sources from folk archives, the BBC, the music press and interviews with participants, this is a theoretically engaged and sophisticated analysis of how postwar culture shaped the folk revival in England.

    Abstract: Though the Beatles are nowadays considered national treasures, this book shows how and why they inspired phobia as well as mania in 1960s Britain. As symbols of modernity in the early sixties, they functioned as a stress test for British institutions and identities, at once displaying the possibilities and establishing the limits of change. It argues that they were iconic, divisive, atypical and prefigurative: themes introduced and illustrated in the preface using contemporary cartoons. Their depiction as icons in the 1964 Daily Mail cartoon contrasted starkly with their first appearance in a Fleet Street cartoon twelve months previously, when theirs was one of a barrage of British records raining down on the Kremlin in a display of soft power. They received minor billing in February 1963 compared to Susan Maughan, Helen Shapiro, Cliff Richard, Adam Faith, Marty Wilde and the Tornados, as befitted a band whose second single (Please Please Me) was competing for the number one spot with Frank Ifield's The Wayward Wind (1963). Die aus verschiedenen Disziplinen kommenden Beiträger*innen beschäftigen sich mit diesen hochaktuellen Entwicklungen und liefern Orientierung in der Auseinandersetzung mit der Transformation und Zukunft der (Auto-)Mobilität
    Abstract: Biographical note: Achim Brunnengräber (PD Dr. phil. habil.), geb. 1963, ist Privatdozent an der Freien Universität Berlin im Fachbereich Politik- und Sozialwissenschaften. Er beschäftigt sich am Forschungszentrum für Umweltpolitik mit der politischen Ökonomie der Elektro-Mobilität. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind darüber hinaus die Umwelt-, Energie- und Klimapolitik sowie die Endlager-Governance für hoch radioaktive Reststoffe. Tobias Haas (Dr. rer. soc.), geb. 1983, ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Forschungszentrum für Umweltpolitik an der Freien Universität Berlin und am »Institute For Advanced Sustainability Studies e.V.« in Potsdam. 2018 war er Stipendiat am DFG-Kolleg »Postwachstumsgesellschaften« an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington and other well-known jazz musicians were sent around the world – including to an array of Communist countries – as "jazz ambassadors" in order to mitigate the negative image associated with domestic racial problems. While many non-Americans embraced the Americanism behind this jazz diplomacy without question, others criticized American domestic and foreign policies while still appreciating jazz – thus jazz, despite its popularity, also became a medium for expressing anti-Americanism. This book examines the development of jazz outside America, including across diverse historical periods and geographies – shedding light on the effectiveness of jazz as an instrument of state power within a global political context.

Sie verließen die Türkei aufgrund des Militärputsches von 1980, der Diskriminierung ihrer kurdischen und/oder alevitischen Identität oder des gescheiterten Gezi-Protests und erneuter Einschränkungen von Minderheitsgruppierungen im Musikleben. Kirsten Seidlitz untersucht, wie sie von Deutschland aus mit ihrem musikalischen Schaffen politisch kommentieren, inwiefern die deutsche Gesellschaft mit Musik erreicht, aufgeklärt und beeinflusst werden kann, und ob die in Deutschland produzierte Musik zurück in die Türkei gelangt

    Abstract: Vor welche Probleme wird die Kommunalpolitik in Bezug auf Stadtentwicklung und Klima gestellt und warum können diesbezügliche bundespolitische Programme nicht so einfach umgesetzt werden? Aus einer politisch-geographischen Perspektive zeigt Cindy Sturm am Beispiel von Dresden und Münster, dass diese Programme auf unterschiedliche Rationalitäten und Problematisierungen treffen und in vielfältigen, auch unerwarteten oder widerständigen Praktiken der Stadtentwicklungspolitik angeeignet und modifiziert werden. Basierend auf diskurs- und gouvernementalitätstheoretischen Ansätzen trägt die Studie somit dazu bei, die Komplexität kommunaler Politik allgemein bzw. von Klimapolitik im Besonderen zu verdeutlichen

    Abstract: Music has long been an avenue for protest, seen as a way to promote freedom and equality, instill hope, and fight for change. Popular music, in particular, is considered to be an effective form of subversion and resistance under oppressive circumstances. But as Nomi Dave shows us in The Revolution's Echoes, the opposite is also true-music can often support, rather than challenge, the powers that be. Examining fifty years of history in Guinea, Dave introduces readers to the music supporting the authoritarian regime of former president Sékou Touré, and to the musicians who, even long after his death, have continued to praise dictators and avoid dissent. Dave shows that this isn't just the result of state manipulation-even in the absence of coercion, musicians and their audiences take real pleasure in musical praise of leaders. Time and again, whether in traditional music or in newer genres such as rap, Guinean musicians have celebrated state power and authority. With The Revolution's Echoes, Dave insists that we must grapple with the uncomfortable truth that some forms of music choose to support authoritarianism, generating new pleasures and new politics in the process

This collection shows how maps are created and transformed as a part of political struggle, for critical research or in art and education: from indigenous territories in the Amazon to the anti-eviction movement in San Francisco; from defending commons in Mexico to mapping refugee camps with balloons in Lebanon; from slums in Nairobi to squats in Berlin; from supporting communities in the Philippines to reporting sexual harassment in Cairo. This Is Not an Atlas seeks to inspire, to document the underrepresented, and to be a useful companion when becoming a counter-cartographer yourself

    Abstract: Der Begriff der Aneignung erlebt in Diskursen zu Theorie, Praxis und Politik der Stadtentwicklung ein Revival: Angesichts der Dynamiken spätmoderner Ökonomie und Politik geht es um die Verfügbarkeit und den selbstbestimmten Gebrauch von städtischem Raum und Lebenszeit. Dieser Diskurs schließt auch das »Selber machen« von urbanen Freiräumen mit ein, »Stadtentwicklung von unten« soll die urbanen Freiräume von morgen bestimmen. Bereits nach der Planungseuphorie der 1950/60er Jahre lenkte man den Blick auf »andere« Akteure der Produktion und des Gebrauchs von urbanen Freiräumen. Dieses Buch widmet sich der vergleichenden Betrachtung der damaligen und aktuellen Theorien über die Aneignung von urbanen Freiräumen in verschiedenen Fachdisziplinen.

Doch tatsächlich verbergen sich hinter der scheinbar standardisierten Klangoberfläche mannigfaltige Formen des kulturellen Gebrauchs. Mittels umfangreicher Archivrecherchen illustriert Michael Rauhuts Vergleich der Entwicklung des Blues in Ost- und Westdeutschland, wie soziale und politische Verhältnisse den Sinn von Musik formen.Rauhut zeigt: Wenn auch die Sounds weltweit gültigen Mustern folgen und kaum Unterschiede erkennen lassen, sind doch die Bedeutungszusammenhänge, in denen sich der Blues realisiert, durchaus verschieden. Die Studie bietet nicht nur ein kultur- und musikgeschichtliches Resümee der Genese des Blues in Deutschland, sondern leistet auch einen Beitrag zur Globalisierungsdebatte
    Abstract: People like to reduce the blues to a handful of clichés and twelve bars. But in actual fact, behind the seemingly standardized surface of the sound, manifold forms of cultural use are concealed. Using extensive archival research, Michael Rauhut's comparison of the development of the blues in East and West Germany illustrates how social and political relations form the meaning of music. It shows that even if the sounds follow globally valid models and differences can barely be recognized, the contexts of meaning in which the blues is employed are thoroughly different. This study offers not just a historical summary of the blues, it also provides a contribution to the debate around globalization

Tracking the fall of South African hope into the disenchantment that often characterizes the outlook of its youth today who face high unemployment, extreme inequality, and widespread crime Steingo looks to kwaito as a powerful tool that paradoxically engages South Africa s crucial social and political problems by, in fact, seeming to ignore them. Politicians and cultural critics have long criticized kwaito for failing to provide any meaningful contribution to a society that desperately needs direction. As Steingo shows, however, these criticisms are built on problematic assumptions about the political function of music. Interacting with kwaito artists and fans, he shows that youth aren t escaping their social condition through kwaito but rather using it to expand their sensory realities and generate new possibilities. Resisting the truism that music is always political, Steingo elucidates a music that thrives on its its radically ambiguous relationship with politics, power, and the state. - Gavin Steingo is assistant professor of music at the University of Pittsburgh.

    Abstract: The role of folk music, broadly defined, during the trying years of the Great Depression in the United States, 1929–40, with a particular focus on the role of left-wing political groups and individuals. The government promoted a labor and cultural renaissance through the "alphabet stew" of federal programs, employing Charles Seeger, John and Alan Lomax, and numerous others in collecting folk music. Performers such as Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, Pete Seeger, and many others connected vernacular music with commercial outlets such as concerts, record companies, and radio shows. Members of the Communist Party, in particular, used folk music to promote labor unions, civil rights, and a peace movement. Folk music remained a vital part of popular culture throughout the Depression years into World War II. There is a particular focus on the role that folk music played in the clash between capitalism and the emerging grassroots proletarian movements

    Abstract: This book offers a range of trajectories of academic thought and musical practice in Turkey. It adopts a multidisciplinary approach, with chapters exploring the question posed by its title from the perspectives of ethnomusicology, historical musicology, neurology, psychology, social science, gender studies, acoustics, and linguistics. Some studies are experimental and scientific in nature, ranging from a friends focus on tonality, using EEG to investigate differences in the cognitive responses of musicians and non-musicians listening to tonal and atonal chords, to an examination of brain activation in response to reverberation time differences resulting from room acoustics. Another essay assesses the psychometric properties and effectiveness of the new Turkish version of the Music Performance Anxiety Inventory for Adolescents (MPAI-A), designed to survey performance anxiety and determine its severity in adolescent musicians. On a completely different tack, two studies investigate Turkey's heavy metal scene. The first explores the social forces propelling the "moral panic" over Satanism and heavy metal, generated by the national press in response to a gory murder in the 1990s. Through field interviews, this study examines the impact of this on the public perception and stereotypes of metal fans, and its effects on the fans themselves. The second contribution examines gender codes within the global extreme metal scene, looking specifically at the barriers faced - and overcome - by female Turkish extreme metal musicians. Setting Turkish music practices today in their historical context, a further contribution offers a critical appraisal of the mission to "contemporize" music, expounded (though ineffectually carried out) by the founding ideologies of Early Republican Turkey.
    Abstract: A similar chapter discusses how even Anatolian folk music, when examined more closely, caused consternation, looking at the change in the Turkish state's attitude towards the multicultural structure of Anatolia during the last decade. The final article in this volume focuses on how Turkish musicians use the term "sound" - the English word, as borrowed in Turkish - to discuss elements of music. Beyond the physical meaning of the word, the essay explores the ways the word is used by musicians to describe the timbre of instruments, the production quality of recordings, the application of music technology, the aural aesthetics of an album, and the distinctive and unique elements of an artist's performance. - Firat Kutluk is a Professor of Musicology, and received his PhD on "Cultural Analysis of Popular Music in Turkey" in 1994. In addition to participating in various conferences, seminars and symposiums, he has presented a series of lectures on "New Music" and "Music and Politics". Between 1991 and 2009, he made a number of music programmes for broadcast, and has published the books Music History (1997) and Music and Politics (1997). He is currently Director of the Graduate School of Fine Arts at Dokuz Eylul University and Principal of DABMER (Acoustic and Cognitive Musicology Research Centre). Ugur Turkmen graduated from Uludag University's Faculty of Education in 1993. He gained a Master's degree from the Department of Music Education of Selcuk University in 1996. In 2005, he received his doctorate from Bolu Abant Izzet Baysal University's Department of Music Education, before becoming an Associate Professor of Musicology in 2010. He is currently the Director of Afyon Kocatepe University State Conservatory.
