    Abstract: Dieses Lexikon ist ein Novum der Musikliteratur. Erstmals werden alle wichtigen Texte zur Musiktheorie und Musikästhetik in lexikalischer Form von internationalen Spezialistinnen und Spezialisten beschrieben und für die Wissenschaft und Praxis leichter zugänglich gemacht. In diesem zweiten Band wird ein umfangreiches Corpus von rund 450 primär europäischen und nordamerikanischen Texten von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart vorgestellt. Neben im engeren Sinne ästhetischen und musikästhetischen Schriften wie etwa Immanuel Kants „Kritik der Urteilskraft“ (1790), Eduard Hanslicks „Vom Musikalisch-Schönen“ (1854) und Zofia Lissas „Ästhetik der Filmmusik“ (1964) finden viele andere Textformen Berücksichtigung: Denn auch die Verfasser der Bibel und frühneuzeitlicher Erziehungsliteratur, Komponisten wie Robert Schumann und John Cage, Dichter wie Ovid und E. T. A. Hoffmann oder Romanautorinnen und Romanautoren wie Dorothea Schlegel und Honoré de Balzac haben auf ihre Weise über Musik nachgedacht. Wie schon in Band 1 – Musiktheorie von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart – sind die Artikel alphabetisch nach Autorinnen und Autoren geordnet und folgen jeweils demselben Aufbau: • Grundlegende Informationen zum Originaltext, seinen Quellen, Editionen und Übersetzungen • Beschreibung des Inhalts • Kommentar, der den Text in seine jeweilige Zeit und die relevanten Diskurse einordnet sowie seine Bedeutung und Rezeption darlegt • Hinweise zu wichtiger Forschungsliteratur Damit bietet der Band Studierenden, Lehrenden und Forschenden der Musikwissenschaft sowie anderer geistes- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Fächer einen Überblick über das weite Feld der musikästhetischen Literatur – von der Bibel und Aristoteles über Quantz, Kant, Schumann, Wagner, Thomas Mann, Adorno bis zu Brendel, Boulez und Eco.

    Abstract: Als Ort der symbolischen Austragung sozialer Konflikte hat es deutscher Gangsta-Rap im Laufe der letzten zwei Jahrzehnte zu einiger Bekanntheit gebracht: Im Gangsta-Rap kommen nicht nur Spannungen zwischen Hoch- und Popkultur, Migrationsgesellschaft und Nationalitäten, wirtschaftlichen Erfolgen und künstlerischem Anspruch, sondern auch strafrechtlich verfolgbaren Beleidigungen und gesellschaftlicher Diskursfähigkeit deutlich zum Tragen. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes zeigen, dass dieses Phänomen der pluralen Gesellschaft damit exemplarisch für die Ambivalenzen der Moderne stehen kann

Auffällig ist, dass es immer wieder musikalische Vertreter*innen des Typus »Junkie« sind, die zu Weltstars und Ikonen werden. Doch warum ist dieser Lebenswandel und dabei ausgerechnet der Konsum von Heroin so populär (gewesen)? Durch die Rekonstruktion individueller Lebensgeschichten heroinabhängiger Musiker*innen in Los Angeles bestimmt Melanie Ptatscheck nicht nur sozialpsychologische und musikspezifische Suchtfaktoren. Ebenso zeigt sie auf, durch welche individuellen Bedürfnisse und gesellschaftlichen Narrative die Selbstvorstellungen dieser Musiker*innen geprägt sind

    Abstract: Seit den 1960er Jahren steigt in Europa die Zahl der jüdischen Kulturerbeprojekte. Im Gedenken an die Schoa suchen Nichtjuden die Relikte der Vergangenheit zu bewahren und lassen dabei nicht selten die gegenwärtigen jüdischen Gemeinden außer Acht. Die Autorinnen unterziehen diese Praxis des „authorized heritage" einer kritischen Betrachtung.     Abstract: Opening up the dialogue between popular music studies and aging studies, this book offers a major exploration of age and popular music across Europe. Using a variety of methods to illustrate how age within popular music is contingent and compelling, the volume explores how it provokes curation and devotion across a variety of sites and artists who record in several European languages, and genres including waltz music, electronica, pop, folk, rap, and the French 'chanson.' Visiting the many ways in which age is problematized, revered, and performed within Europe in relation to popular music, case studies analyze: French touring shows of popular music stars from the 1960s; Andre Rieu's annual Vrijthof concerts in the Netherlands; Kraftwerk and Bjoerk's appearances at renowned art museums as curated objects; queer approaches to popular music space and time; British folk music inheritances; pan-European strategies of stardom and career longevity; and inheritance and post-colonial hauntings of race and identity. The book works with the notion of travelling, across borders, genres, sexualities, and media, highlighting the visibility of the aging body across a variety of European sites in order to establish popular music through the lens of age as a positive methodology with which to approach popular music cultures, and to offer a counter-narrative to age as decline. This book will appeal to scholars of popular music, popular culture, media studies, cultural studies, aging studies, and cultural gerontology

Global conflicts of the 20th century fundamentally transformed not only national boundaries, power relations, and global economies, but also the arts and culture of every nation involved. An important, unacknowledged aspect of these conflicts is that they have unique musical soundtracks. Music in World War II explores how music and sound took on radically different dimensions in the United States and Europe before, during, and after World War II. Additionally, the collection examines the impact of radio and film as the disseminators of the war's musical soundtrack. Contributors contend that the European and American soundtrack of World War II was largely one of escapism rather than the lofty, solemn, heroic, and celebratory mode of "war music" in the past. Furthermore, they explore the variety of experiences of populations forced from their homes and interned in civilian and POW camps in Europe and the United States, examining how music in these environments played a crucial role in maintaining ties to an idealized "home" and constructing politicized notions of national and ethnic identity. This fascinating and well-constructed volume of essays builds understanding of the role and importance of music during periods of conflict and highlights the unique aspects of music during World War II"--

    Abstract: Based on a study of Madrid (1850-1930), 'Discordant Notes' argues that sound, noise, street music and flamenco have played a key role in structuring the transition to modernity by helping to negotiate social attitudes and legal responses to fundamental problems such as poverty, insalubrity, and crime.

    Abstract: Popular music is increasingly being represented and celebrated as an aspect of contemporary cultural history and heritage. In many places across the world, popular music heritage sites - including museums, archives, commemorative plaques adorning buildings, and what could be referred to as DIY music heritage initiatives - constitute some of the key ways in which popular music artists, scenes and events are being remembered. Bringing together a selection of wide-ranging contributions, the purpose of this book is to present a number of case studies from Europe and Australia that demonstrate the variety of ways in which popular music is being cast as cultural heritage and as a medium that invokes the collective memory of successive generations whose identity and sense of cultural belonging have often been indelibly inscribed by the musical soundscapes of their teen and early adult years.     Abstract: Histoire et anthropologie des ensembles populaires de violons en Europe.00Les fortes ressemblances entre anciens ensembles ménétriers de violons et actuelles bandes de violons ? tsiganes ? d?Europe centrale, autorisent l?hypothèse des transferts culturels.00Les Tsiganes étant présents en Europe depuis le xve siècle, les processus de mise en contact entre eux et les populations locales (Gadjé) sont multiples : circulations humaines de toutes sortes, cadre répressif et carcéral associé au vagabondage, fréquentation, par les Tsiganes, des nobles, des cours, de l?espace économique et performatif de la foire, des milieux du théâtre itinérant. Par ailleurs, au xviie siècle, les bandes de violons ? surtout françaises ? ont essaimé dans toute l?Europe, notamment centrale.
    Abstract: De ce fait, les actuelles bandes de violons européennes, témoignant de l?histoire migratoire tsigane, des échanges entre Tsiganes et Gadjé et entre Européens eux-mêmes, constituent une mémoire interculturelle de l?Europe.00Si l?itinérance, l?oralité, la périphérie sociale et culturelle, la dilution du ?Bohémien? dans le ?vagabond? complexifient le traitement d?une telle recherche en raison de la raréfaction des sources directes, l?un des objectifs de cet ouvrage est de révéler le dynamisme et le mouvement des sociétés européennes anciennes, l?extrême complexité de leur fonctionnement musical, l?enchevêtrement de leurs réalités sociales, économiques, politiques, culturelles.
    Abstract: Cette histoire des bandes de violons en Europe doit, certes, être appréhendée dans le cadre des cours, mais aussi d?une culture ménétrière urbaine, rurale, parfois foraine et marginale, itinérante et nomade.0L?autre ambition de cet ouvrage est de proposer une nouvelle approche de la technique et du jeu violonistiques des anciens ménétriers violonistes, à partir de l?étude des consorts populaires actuels de violons de certaines régions d?Europe occidentale (Italie), centrale et balkanique.0

    Abstract: Musik spielt bei der Politisierung der Gesellschaft im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert eine zentrale Rolle. Als Ausdrucksform und Trägerin von politischen Botschaften ist sie als emotionales Kommunikationsereignis zu deuten. Neben Geselligkeit generiert Musik auch Werte und stiftet Identität und Solidarität. Die Vision von einer ›deutschen‹ Musik entfaltete als ästhetischer Identitätsentwurf bei der gesellschaftlichen Neufindung des ›Deutschseins‹ reale Wirkungsmacht.Doch was kennzeichnete das ›Deutsche‹ in ihr? Dieser Band untersucht das Phänomen im interdisziplinären und transnationalen Dialog zwischen 1848er-Revolution und Zweitem Weltkrieg. Es entsteht ein Panorama von gesellschaftlichen und politischen Inklusions- und Exklusionsprozessen, die sich durch Muster einer propagierten ›deutschen‹ Musik- und ›Machtkultur‹ ereigneten, wandelten und neu definierten.

As a catalyst for social experiment and political practice, improvisation aids in the creation, contestation, and codification of social realities and identities. Among other topics, the contributors discuss the social aesthetics of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, the Feminist Improvising Group, and contemporary Malian music, as well as the virtual sociality of interactive computer music, the significance of "uncreative" improvisation, responses to French New Wave cinema, and the work of figures ranging from bell hooks and Billy Strayhorn to Kenneth Goldsmith.     Abstract: How does academic jazz education impact the Black cultural value of soulfulness and esthetic standards in contemporary jazz music? Through candid conversations with nine of the country’s most highly respected jazz practitioners and teachers, What Is This Thing Called Soul explores the potential consequences of forcing the Black musical style of jazz into an academic pedagogical system that is specifically designed to facilitate the practice and pedagogy of European classical music. This work tests the belief that the cultural, emotional and esthetic elements at the very core of jazz’s unique identity, along with the music’s overt connection to Black culture, are effectively being "lost in translation" in traversing the divide between academic and non-academic jazz spheres. Each interviewee commands significant respect worldwide in the fields of jazz performance and jazz pedagogy. Noteworthy subjects include: Rufus Reid, Lewis Nash, Nicholas Payton and Wycliffe Gordon—along with the late jazz masters Marcus Belgrave and Phil Woods. Interviews are supplemented by original analysis of the nature and validity of these issues contributed by the author.What Is This Thing Called Soul offers a candid and objective look into pressing issues of race, culture and ethnic value in relation to both jazz music and jazz education. Sensitivity, marginalization and even a fear of offending others has limited open discussion of how the soul of jazz music can be lost in technical boundaries. What Is This Thing Called Soul is the first attempt to directly address such culturally urgent issues in jazz music.
