    Abstract: Houses are not just assemblages of individual rooms but intricate patterns of organised space, governed by rules and conventions about the size and configuration of rooms, which domestic activities go together, how the interior should be decorated and furnished and what kinds of household object are appropriate in each setting, how family members relate to one another in different spaces, and how and where guests should be received and entertained in the home. Decoding Homes and Houses introduces new, computer-based techniques designed to retrieve and interpret this wealth of social and symbolic information. The various representations and measures show how domestic space provides a shared framework for everyday life, how social meanings are constructed in the home and how different sub-groups within society differentiate themselves through their patterns of domestic space and lifestyles.

    Abstract: Abstract: Die Entwicklung der Soziologie wird (mit den bereits vorhandenen soziologischen Mitteln) unter Beachtung der Annahme, die Entwicklung der Theorien sei von Faktoren beeinflusst, die in der "Vergesellschaftung ihrer Mitglieder ihren Ursprung haben", analysiert. Ziel ist es, eine soziologische Geschichtsschreibung der Soziologie (SGS) auf einige Inhalte festzulegen. Diese Geschichtsschreibung unterscheidet sich von der traditionellen, in der selten die Methoden der Soziologie Beachtung findet ("Textfixierung"). Beim Aufbau einer SGS muss beachtet werden, dass AutorInnen der Soziologie nicht beliebig lange modern sind, es also einen Kontextbezug gibt. Statt der Beschreibung einzelner Theorien/ Personen wird die Wahl von "Mikro-Umwelten" (Departement, Stadt, etc.) als Analyseeinheiten bevorzugt. Soziologie setzt "Teamarbeit" voraus. (pri)

    Abstract: "In 1858, Cyprian Clamorgan wrote a brief but immensely readable book entitled The Colored Aristocracy of St. Louis. The grandson of a white voyageur and a mulatto woman, he was himself a member of the "colored aristocracy." In a setting where the vast majority of African Americans were slaves, and where those who were free generally lived in abject poverty, Clamorgan's "aristocrats" were exceptional people. Wealthy, educated, and articulate, these men and women occupied a "middle ground." Their material advantages removed them from the mass of African Americans, but their race barred them from membership in white society." "The Colored Aristocracy of St. Louis is both a serious analysis of the social and legal disabilities under which African Americans of all classes labored and a settling of old scores. Somewhat malicious, Clamorgan enjoyed pointing out the foibles of his friends and enemies, but his book had a serious message as well. "He endeavored to convince white Americans that race was not an absolute, that the black community was not a monolith, that class, education, and especially wealth, should count for something.""--Jacket

Am Beispiel des Instituts für Regionalentwicklung und Strukturplanung (IRS) wird gezeigt, wie Soziologinnen und Soziologen in entsprechende interdisziplinäre und internationale Vorhaben eingebunden sind. Beiträge zur regionalen Entwicklung in Mexiko und in Berlin-Brandenburg werden miteinander verglichen. Das Forschungsfeld um Regionalkultur, Milieuansätze und Lernende Regionen wird beschrieben. Mit der Kategorie des 'heuristischen Milieubegriffs' wird eine Möglichkeit aufgezeigt, soziologisches Wissen bei Fragen der Regionalförderung einzubringen.     Abstract: Abstract: Die Studie beschreibt zunächst die Entstehung und das "klassische" Schema des Handlungsablaufs der Zapfenstreichzeremonie. Anhand des formalen Ablaufschemas wird das elementare Muster eines Passagerituals herauskristallisiert. Der zweite Abschnitt geht auf die Tradition der soldatischen Rituale in Deutschland ein. Hier wird deutlich, dass die Zeremonie schon immer Anlaß für scharfe kritische Auseinandersetzungen war. Mit der unmittelbaren Vorgeschichte der heutigen Form des Zapfenstreichs beschäftigt sich der dritte Teil. Im letzten Schritt erfolgt die ritualtheoretische Interpretation des kompletten Handlungszusammenhangs. Besondere Berücksichtigung erfahren dabei die antiritualistischen Motive der Zapfenstreichgegner sowie die Repräsentationsfunktionen des Rituals für den soldatischen Alltag. (pre)

In the Congo crisis (1960-1965) they earned an especially unsavory reputation for greed, brutality and racism; it is a reputation that has stuck to the mercenary and on the whole justly. During the 1990s a new phenomenon has emerged in the form of the mercenary corporations such as Executive Outcomes or Sandline. These corporations offer a range of military expertise and weaponry, have the covert support of governments in the countries from which they come and are rapidly becoming a power to themselves, ultimately far more dangerous than the individual freebooters of the past.

    Abstract: Is a genuine logic of scientific discovery possible? In the essays collected here, Hintikka not only defends an affirmative answer; he also outlines such a logic. It is the logic of questions and answers. Thus inquiry in the sense of knowledge-seeking becomes inquiry in the sense of interrogation. Using this new logic, Hintikka establishes a result that will undoubtedly be considered the fundamental theorem of all epistemology, viz., the virtual identity of optimal strategies of pure discovery with optimal deductive strategies. Questions to Nature, of course, must include observations and experiments. Hintikka shows, in fact, how the logic of experimental inquiry can be understood from the interrogative vantage point.     Abstract: Hermeneutics was elaborated as a specific art of understanding in humanities.     Abstract: Anapolitanos critically examines and evaluates three basic characteristics of the Leibnizian metaphysical system: Leibniz's version of representation; the principle of continuity; and space, time, and the phenomenally spatio-temporal. Chapter I discusses representation, especially as it refers to the connection between the real and the phenomenal levels of Leibniz's system. Chapter II examines the principle of continuity, including continuity as a general feature of every level of Leibniz's metaphysics. The position adopted is that the problem of the composition of the continuum played a central role on the development of Leibniz's non-spatial and non-temporal monadic metaphysics. The machinery developed is then used to offer a new interpretation of Leibniz' metaphysics of space and time. The notion of indirect representation is used to construct appropriate models that clarify the nature of the correspondence between the real and the phenomenal levels in the case of the relations `spatially between' and `temporally between', as well as in the cases of spatial and temporal density. Finally, Leibniz's solution to the problem of the continuum is discussed, arguing that it is not entirely satisfactory. A non-anachronistic alternative is proposed, compatible with Leibniz's metaphysics of substance

    Abstract: A gifted poet, a women's rights activist, and an expert on moral and natural philosophy, Lucrezia Marinella (1571-1653) was known throughout Italy as the leading female intellectual of her age. Born into a family of Venetian physicians, she was encouraged to study, and, fortunately, she did not share the fate of many of her female contemporaries, who were forced to join convents or were pressured to marry early. Marinella enjoyed a long literary career, writing mainly religious, epic, and pastoral poetry, and biographies of famous women in both verse and prose. Marinella's masterpiece, The Nobility and Excellence of Women, and the Defects and Vices of Men was first published in 1600, composed at a furious pace in answer to Giusepe Passi's diatribe about women's alleged defects. This polemic displays Marinella's vast knowledge of the Italian poetic tradition and demonstrates her ability to argue against authors of the misogynist tradition from Boccaccio to Torquato Tasso.     Abstract: Drinking has always meant much more than satisfying the thirst. Drinking can be a necessity, a comfort, an indulgence or a social activity. Liquid Pleasures is an engrossing study of the social history of drinks in Britain from the late seventeenth century to the present. From the first cup of tea at breakfast to mid-morning coffee, to an eveining beer and a 'night-cap', John Burnett discusses individual drinks and drinking patterns which have varied not least with personal taste but also with age, gender, region and class. He shows how different ages have viewed the same drink as either demon poison or medicine. John Burnett traces the history of what has been drunk in Britain from the 'hot beverage revolution' of the late seventeenth century - connecting drinks and related substances such as sugar to empire - right up to the 'cold drinks revolution' of the late twentieth century, examining the factors which have determined these major changes in our dietary habits.

Viele Gefühle und Verhaltensweisen, die in früheren Jahrhunderten nach und nach durch eine immer straffere Zwangsjacke aus Vorschriften und Etikette blockiert worden waren, wurden im Laufe dieses Jahrhunderts aus ihren drückenden Fesseln erlöst. Die Frage, wie die Veränderungen in den Umgangsformen und der Gefühlsregulierung im 20. Jahrhundert dargestellt, interpretiert und erklärt werden können, ist im Grunde dieselbe, wie sie Norbert Elias in seinem "Über den Prozeß der Zivilisation" im Hinblick auf entsprechende Veränderungen in Westeuropa zwischen dem 15. und dem 19. Jahrhundert gestellt hat. Die Erklärung für die tiefgreifenden Veränderungen im 20. Jahrhundert baut deshalb durchaus auf der Zivilisationstheorie von Norbert Elias auf, führt aber zugleich zu einer kritischen Erörterung dieser Theorie

    Note: Marcel Mauss hat zustimmend einen bösen Satz überliefert: "Die, die eine Wissenschaft nicht betreiben können, schreiben ihre Geschichte, diskutieren ihre Methode oder kritisieren ihre Geltungsansprüche" (Mauss 1978, S. 147). Ich hatte das Glück, daß meine wichtigsten Lehrer in qualitativer Sozialforschung erst dann begannen, eine Methodologie zu entwickeln, nachdem sie sich in empirischen Untersuchungen die erforderliche Forschungserfahrung angeeignet und damit ihre Forschungskompetenz erwiesen hatten. Als ein weiterer glücklicher Umstand kam hinzu, daß jeder dieser Lehrer für eine eigene Tradition qualitativer Sozialforschung steht bzw. eine solche begründet hat. Zunächst ist Aaron V. Cicourel zu nennen, der an der phänomenologischen Tradition der qualitativen Sozialforschung orientiert ist. Dann Anselm Strauss. Sein Paradigma ist das des Symbolischen Interaktionismus; zusammen mit Barney Glaser hat er die Grounded Theory begründet und kontinuierlich weiterentwickelt. Es war Richard Grathoff, der Mitte der 70er Jahre Cicourel und Strauss an das Sozialwissenschaftliche Archiv der Universitat Konstanz geholt hat, wo sie uns die nötige Starthilfe bei unseren Untersuchungen über "Soziale Relevanz und biographische Struktur" (initiiert von Thomas Luckmann und Richard Grathoff) gaben. Grathoff selbst steht für die sozialphänomenologische Tradition der Milieuforschung in der Nachfolge von Aron Gurwitsch und Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Schließlich ist Ulrich Oevermann zu erwähnen, dessen Objektive Hermeneutik im wesentlichen dem genetischen Strukturalismus verpflichtet ist und der mitunter die Phänomenologie scharf kritisiert - ein Umstand, an dem sich ablesen läßt, daß es sich dabei für Oevermann um eine Richtung handelt, die es zumindest wert ist, daß man sich mit ihr auseinandersetzt

    Note: Im Jahre 1992 ist im Rahmen eines internationalen Forschungsprojektes durch das Bundesinstitut für Bevölkerungsforschung der Family and Fertility Survey (FFS) in West- und Ostdeutschland in Kombination mit dem Population Policy Acceptance Survey (PPA) erhoben werden. Im vorliegenden Band werden nun die wichtigsten Ergebnisse verschiedener FFS- und PPA-Auswertungsprojekte aus Einzelveröffentlichungen in komprimierter Form vorgestellt. Hauptanliegen dieser Veröffentlichung ist es, Bilder der Familie in Deutschland zu zeichnen und Aussagen zu ihrer Überlebensfähgikeit und damit zu den zukünftigen Fertilitätstrends zu gewinnen. Diese immer wieder aktuelle Problemstellung hatte Anfang der 90erJahre mit der deutschen Wiedervereinigung und dem damit einhergehenden Wandel der demographischen Situation in Ostdeutschland ein besonderes Gewicht. So wird der Frage nachgegangen, ob sich mit dem Verhaltenswandel auch die Einstellungen zur Familie geändert haben, ob es Anzeichen einer längerfristigen Divergenz in den Verhaltensmustern zwischen West- und Ostdeutschland gibt. Aber auch für Westdeutschland harrten drängende Fragen einer Beantwortung hinsichtlich der Zukunft der Familie

Das Ergebnis ist mehr als überraschend und entlarvt die bislang öffentlich geführte Diskussion über die angeblich medienerzeugte Gewalt als einen zyklisch erneuerbaren, aber fruchtlosen Diskurs, dessen wissenschaftlicher Gehalt über weite Strecken durch die dadurch entfachte öffentliche Diskussion substituierbar erscheint. Ideologie und anderes ist am Werk, denn: Je weniger wissenschaftlich die Prüfung der Frage nach der "Gewalt durch Gewalt im Fernsehen?" geführt wird, umso größer erscheinen die von den Medien drohenden und prognostizierten Gefahren
