    Kurzfassung: Das Dorfbild der an den Flüssen gelegenen Siedlungen der Ngaju-Dayak wird durch eine Vielzahl von Holzobjekten und -skulpturen geprägt, die in enger Verbindung zum Totenkult stehen. Der Film berichtet über ihre kultische Bedeutung, zeigt das Schnitzen neuer, aber auch verwitterte alte Figuren, die für die Dörfer nördlich der Stadt Sampit in ihren wichtigsten Formen dokumentiert werden: Die Hampatong - Menschenfiguren mit Stellvertreterfunktion; die Sandong-Tulang - auf Pfosten gestellte Beinhäuschen mit der Weltenschlange Naga am Giebel; zurückgelassene Masken an Grabstellen sowie den auf hohen Masten thronenden Nashornvogel als Verkörperung des Obergottes Mahaltala.
    Kurzfassung: The "villagescapes" of the settlements of the Ngaju-Dayak, which lie on rivers, are characterised by a multitude of wooden objects and sculptures, which are closely linked to the cult of the dead. The film reports on their cultic importance, shows the carving of new, but also weathered old, figures, which are documented for the villages north to the city of Sampit in their most important forms. The Hampatong human figures, which have a representation function; the Sandong-Tulang, charnel houses built on posts with Naga, the world serpent, on their gables; abandoned masks on grave sites as well as the rhinoceros bird enthroned on high masts as the embodiment of the head god, Mahaltala.

    Kurzfassung: In einem vielschichtigen Panorama zeichnet der Film das Bild des deutschen Dorfes Ófalu in Südungarn, dessen 428 Einwohner bis heute die herkömmliche Lebensart bewahrt haben. Besuche im Kindergarten und bei einer Familie dokumentieren die lebendige Zweisprachigkeit, ebenso Äußerungen von Dorfbewohnern, die über die Handwerkstradition, aber auch von Verschleppungsschicksalen der Nachkriegszeit berichten. Karfreitags- und Auferstehungsprozession zeigen die Volksfrömmigkeit, eine Hochzeitsfeier und ein Wirtshausbesuch das Dorfleben mit deutschen Liedern, Musik und Tanz. Die Frage nach der Zukunft findet neben einer vorsichtigen Tourismusorientierung ihre Antwort aus dem Munde eines Bewohners: "Wenn sie bleiben und zusammenhalten...".
    Kurzfassung: A panorama of the village of Ófalu in southern Hungary, whose 428 inhabitants retain traditional lifestyle. Kindergarten, a bilingual family, comments on hand crafts and also the post war period. Good Friday and resurrection traditions showing puritanism, a marriage. Visit to local pub with German songs, dance and music. The future, apart from possibilities of tourism, is seen as "we stick together and see.....".

    Kurzfassung: In Impressionen und detaillierten Skizzen porträtiert der Film das Leben im deutschen Dorf Óbánya (dt.: Altglashütte) in Südungarn, wo sich die deutsche Muttersprache in Brauchtum, z. B. beim Osterratschen und Hahnenschlagen, aber auch in Familie und Stammtischrunde erhalten hat. Im Zentrum steht das Töpferhandwerk des Josef Teimel, das heute durch den florierenden Tourismus guten Absatz findet. Bei Veranstaltungen wie dem Kirchweihfest oder beim winterlichen Schweineschlachten wird der Zusammenhalt der Dorfgemeinde unmittelbar augenfällig.

    Kurzfassung: Nach einer Einführung über die Landschaft und Dorfanlage wird der Alltag skizziert: Dorfschule, Aussaat am Brandrodungsfeld, Sammeln von Naturgummi, Reisschälen, Reisstampfen, Flechten, Schmiedearbeiten in einer Freilandschmiede, Einkauf im Dorfladen, Fischen, Kochen, Kaffeesortieren und Zubereiten von Betelpriem. Nach einem Unterhaltungstanz der Frauen und einem Kriegstanz eines alten Mannes schließt der Film die Vorstellung des Dorfes mit der Abendstimmung am Fluß.
    Kurzfassung: After a general description of the village follows a sketch of everyday life: the village school, sowing in the slash and burn clearings, collection of latex, winnowing rice, weaving, the open-air blacksmith, the village shop, cooking and the preparation of betel. The film closes with an entertainment dance (women), an old man's war dance and the atmospheric sunset at the river.

    Kurzfassung: Durch Anbau, Verarbeitung und Vermarktung von Kraut ist Vecsés landesweit als wohlhabendes Dorf bekannt. Der Film stellt die Frage der Identität der deutschen Bewohner des Dorfes. Hierbei werden verschiedene Lebenssituationen gezeigt: Verarbeitung von Kraut, Vermarktung in Budapest, Verarbeitung von Weintrauben für den Eigenbedarf, die LPG als Wirtschaftsfaktor und Kulturträger, Pflege der Tradition in der Tanzgruppe, Deutschunterricht in der Schule und eine deutsche Hochzeit. Durch Interviews wird das Bild abgerundet.
    Kurzfassung: The planting, processing and marketing of cabbage has made the village Vecsés well-known as comfortably-off. The film frames the question as to the identity of the villagers - and includes various everyday situations: making sauerkraut, market day in Budapest, wine-making, the collective as the centre of economy and culture, traditional dances, German lessons at school and German weddings. Der 〈i〉parang〈/i〉, der im Alltag als Arbeitswerkzeug dient, wird mit Hilfe einer Schnur um die Taille gebunden.
    Kurzfassung: Haanglireh, the 52-year-old village smith of Padua, and his assistant shape a hewing knife about 50 centimetres long. The work takes three hours and proceeds in the following stages: forging and tempering the blade, grinding the edge, and carving the handle. The 〈i〉parang〈/i〉, used as a tool in everyday life, is attached to a cord about the waist.

    Kurzfassung: Nagybörzsöny/Deutschpilsen liegt nördlich von Budapest und gilt als deutsche Siedlung. Deutsche Bergleute bauten hier seit dem 13. Jh. Gold und Silber ab. Nach Aufgabe des Bergbaus im 18. Jh. und Zerfall der Weinbaukultur im 19. Jh. geriet das Dorf in wirtschaftliche Isolation. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg ging der Gebrauch der deutschen Sprache stark zurück. Der Film zeigt Bauten der früheren Weinbaukultur, die Kirchen, die zwei Heimatmuseen, eine Köhlerei im Walde und führt durch Gespräche und Erinnerungen zum Sprachgebrauch und zur Problematik der deutschen Muttersprache. Organisierte Pflege der Tradition wird in Szenen über eine Probe des Frauenchores und der deutschen Tanzgruppe vorgestellt.
    Kurzfassung: Nagybörzsöny/German Pilsen is located the north of Budapest and is considered to be a German settlement. German miners have mined gold and silver there since the 13th century. After mining was abandoned in the 18th century and decline of viniculture in the 19th century, the village fell into economic isolation. After World War II the use of the German language declined. The film shows buildings from the former wine-growing culture, the churches, the two local history museums, a charcoal plant in the forest, and then proceeds to language use and to the problems of the German mother tongue via discussions and reminiscences. Organised cultivation of this tradition is presented in scenes on a rehearsal of the women's choir and of the German dance group.

    Kurzfassung: Der 56jährige Reisbauer Umi Tupai sitzt auf der Plattform seines Hauses in Palangan und schnitzt aus einem weichen Holz (Palantan) eine kleine Hampatong-Figur. Die Figur weist die Zeichen einer Schwangerschaft auf. In den Händen hält sie ein Kästchen, in dem das Zubehör für das Betelkauen aufbewahrt wird. Der Schnitzer benötigt ca. 3 Stunden für die Arbeit. Er ist der einzige Mann im Dorf, der diese Kunst beherrscht.
    Kurzfassung: Seated on the platform of his house at Palangan, the 56-year-old rice-grower Umi Tupai carves a small hampatong figure in soft pelantan wood. The female figure shows the signs of pregnancy. In the hands she holds a small box containing the utensils for betel-chewing. It takes the carver three hours to achieve the figure. He is the only man in the village skilled in this art.

Salap verziert einen Ohrpflock, indem er mit dem Schneidezahn eines Nagetieres Verzierungen in den Bambus kratzt. Die Verzierungen bestreicht er mit Hautfett, um die Musterung hervortreten zu lassen. Er steckt den Ohrpflock in sein linkes Ohrläppchen. Während er arbeitet, spielt ein anderer Mann auf einer Maultrommel.
    Kurzfassung: Several boys and men are playing in front of the men's house in Malingdam/Imarin. Salap is decorating an ear peg by scratching decorations in the bamboo with a rodent incisor. He smears dermal fat into the decorations so that the pattern will stand out. He sticks the ear peg into his left ear lobe. While he is working, another man is playing a Jew's harp.

He puts an andesite blade as well as leaf and fibrous material to serve as a lining on the shorter arm of the branch-fork which is to serve as the shaft and wraps it tightly with the strips of rattan.     Kurzfassung: Salap, ein Mann aus Malingdam/Imarin, spannt Kettfäden über ein Holzgerät und beginnt zu weben, indem er jedes zweite Fach von Hand öffnet. Die jeweils darauffolgenden Fächer werden durch Einschieben eines Trennstabes in die Kette automatisch vorgebildet. Auf den Arbeitsfaden werden weiße Glasperlen aufgezogen. Dieser wird durch das geöffnete Fach geschoben und zwischen den Kettfäden geordnet. Nach Fertigstellung bindet sich Salap die Stirnbinde um.
    Kurzfassung: Salap, a man from Malingdam/Imarin village, demonstrates the making of a head-band in plait weaving technique. He stretches the warp over a wooden frame and starts weaving, opening every alternate shed by hand. The counter sheds are formed automatically by insertion of a separating stick. Assisted by another man and by boys, Salap strings white glass beads on the working thread, passes it through the open shed and arranges the glass beads between the different warp threads. The result is a woven band with a design of glass beads. Salap works in company with other men engaged in other things. Head-bands of this kind are worn by men as festive ornament.

    Kurzfassung: Architektur und Innenausstattung des 1873 erbauten Langhauses (50 m lang, 14 m breit, auf 30 Eisenholzträgern 15 m über dem Boden errichtet) und der Alltag seiner Bewohner sind Thema der Dokumentation: Reisanbau, Gewinnung und Weiterverarbeitung von Rotan, dörfliches Leben am Flußufer, Aspekte der Totenverehrung. Während eines Willkommenfestes, an dem das ganze Dorf teilnimmt, werden verschiedene Tänze aufgeführt.
    Kurzfassung: The film shows the architecture and the interior decoration of a longhouse built in 1873 (50 metres long, 14 metres wide, constructed upon 30 ironwood girders 15 metres above the ground) and the daily life of its inhabitans: rice cultivation, collecting and processing rotan, village life on the river bank, aspects of the veneration of the dead. During a welcome festival, in which the whole village takes part, different dances are performed.

    Kurzfassung: Ein junger Mann aus Munggona schärft die Schneide eines Steinmessers an einem Stein am Kirimye-Fluß. Ein älterer Mann kommt hinzu und schleift seine Steinbeilklinge. Die scharfe Schneidefläche entsteht durch Schleifen der oberen und unteren Kanten auf einem nassen Stein.
    Kurzfassung: A young man from Munggona is sharpening the blade of a stone knife on a stone on the Kirimye River. An old man comes along and sharpens his stone adze's blade. The sharp cutting edge arises as the result of grinding the upper and lower edges on a wet stone.

Der Rundbau mit Satteldach wird während eines Tages (9 Stunden) mit bereitgehaltenem Material in Gemeinschaftsarbeit fertiggestellt.
    Kurzfassung: The bent hut of a family in Malingdam/Imarin is reconstructed with the help of men and boys of the settlement. The new house, a circular building with a saddle-roof, is built with prepared materials in one day, within nine hours. Posts, beams, poles, and boards are only attached by rotan strings. Food cooked in the earth oven is distributed to the helpers.

    Kurzfassung: Nach der Reisernte findet im Dorf Hutajulu ein 4tägiges Umbettungsfest statt. Am Friedhof und am neuen Grabmal, gen. Tugu, werden die Knochen der Vorfahren ausgegraben. Zusammen mit den Gebeinen der in der Fremde Verstorbenen werden sie in 71 kleinen Särgen im neuen Tugu untergebracht. Die Tänze im Dorf werden von der Sippe Hutajulu eröffnet. Die Vertreter der 'brautnehmenden' Familien überbringen tanzend ein Geldgeschenk als ihren Festbeitrag. Ebenfalls tanzend bringen die 'brautgebenden' Familien ihr Reisgeschenk ein. Ein Wasserbüffel wird geschlachtet und sein Fleisch bei dem gemeinsamen Festessen symbolisch an die 'Brautgeber' verteilt. Im Abschlußtanz empfangen die Veranstalter den Segen der 'Brautgeber'-Familien.
    Kurzfassung: A four day log reburial festival takes place in the village of Hutajulu after the rice harvest. In the churchyard and the Tugu (grave) the bones of the ancestors are exposed and, together with the bone of those which died outside the village, are brought to a new tugu in 71 small coffins. The village dance is initiated by the Hutajulu clan. Those families accepting a bride bring a present whilst dancing. The families giving a bride dance in bringing rice. A water buffalo is slaughtered and during the communal feasting the meat is distributed amongst the families which have given a bride. In the ultimate dance the organizers receive the blessings of the bride-giving families.

    Kurzfassung: In der Nähe der Männerhäuser im Weiler Imarin (Malingdam) helfen viele bei dem Umbau eines Familienhauses. Auf dem Versammlungsplatz der Männer werden auch andere Arbeiten verrichtet: Weben eines Stirnbandes, Schnitzen einer Pfeilspitze usw. Plötzlich fängt ein Haus an zu brennen. Der Brand wird gelöscht, der Schaden gleich behoben.
    Kurzfassung: Near the men's house of the hamlet of Imarin a lot of people help in the rebuilding of a family house. On the meeting place of men different kinds of work are done: weaving a forehead band, carving an arrow tip, etc. Suddenly a house has caught fire. The flames are put out, the damage is immediately repaired.

    Kurzfassung: Auf dem Dorfplatz von Malingdam/Imarin, wo sich die Männer aufhalten, stellt ein Mann aus Kalzitplatten durch Ritzen mit Steinsplittern eine Nasenstabrohform her. Als die Rohform zerbricht, arbeitet er an einer neuen, die er anschließend am Bach naß schleift und poliert. Um ihn herum finden andere Aktivitäten statt: Flechten, Faserherstellung, Gesichtsbemalung, Körperreinigung, Haarscheren, Maultrommelspiel, Gesang usw.
    Kurzfassung: A man is sitting on the village ground, the meeting place of men. Using chips of broken stones he carves a nose sticks out of a piece of calcite stone. The calcite breaks and he carves another one. Afterwards he grinds and polishes it at the streamlet. Around him the other men are busy with plaiting, making fibres, face painting, body cleaning, hairshearing, playing a jew's harp, singing, etc.

    Kurzfassung: Auf einer mit Drehkreuz versehenen Töpferscheibe stellt eine Frau aus einer Mischung aus rotem und schwarzem Ton, die sie in einer Grube vor dem Haus aufbereitet, verschiedene Krüge mit Henkeln und Tüllen her. Der Aufbau der Krüge erfolgt auf gezogenen Böden in Spiralwulsttechnik. Die Tüllen werden von einer anderen Frau angefertigt.
    Kurzfassung: On a pottery wheel equipped with a star wheel, a woman is making different jugs with handles and spouts from a mixture of red and black clay, which she has prepared in a pit in front of her house. The fabrication of the jugs takes place on a drawn bottom using the spiral roll technique. The spouts are prepared by another woman.

    Kurzfassung: Knife making is one of the oldest crafts. Even today with mass production there are still craftsmen who produce knives within the so-called home industry. This film which was shot in Sarntal in South Tyrol, shows an elderly village-craftsman finishing off a one-edged knive with inlaid metal ornaments on the wooden handle, a process which takes more than two days.

    Kurzfassung: Das baufällig gewordene sakrale Männerhaus wird innerhalb eines Tages mit bereitgehaltenem Baumaterial durch eine Neukonstruktion ersetzt. Etwa 50 einheimische Männer und Jungen sowie Gäste aus anderen Dörfern nehmen an dem Bau des Rundhauses mit Kegeldach teil. Die Arbeit wird von zeremoniellen Handlungen begleitet.
    Kurzfassung: Building materials, poles and planks, are partly of sacral character. They are set up at a rhythmical run, producing a state of ecstasy. Food is distributed to the workers. The new house is covered with the old roof. Finally, the sacred digging-stick is placed in the new men's house. Small spirit houses are also constructed.

    Kurzfassung: Der vom Webstuhl heruntergenommene Stoff wird in eine außerhalb des Dorfes gelegene Walkemühle gebracht, dort in eine Holzmulde gelegt und von zwei durch eine Nockenwelle angetriebenen Holzhämmer geschlagen (gewalkt). Zwischendurch wird der Stoff mit heißem Wasser begossen. Nach dem Walken wird er zum Trocknen in die Sonne gelegt.
    Kurzfassung: The fabric removed from the loom is taken to a fulling-mill outside the village. There it is placed into a wooden trough and beaten (fulled) by two mallets operated by cam shaft. Ocasionally hot water is sprinkled on the cloth. After fulling the cloth is left in the sun to dry.

    Kurzfassung: The production of a wooden rake requires a number of manual processes and the application of various woods. In the film you can see the making of a rake-head into which the shank will be introduced. As the production of the film had to be carried out within a short time and with limited film material at disposal the fashioning of the shank could not be recorded. The film brings into focus the precision with which the craftsman works and it is characteristic of him that he signs the finished rake.

    Kurzfassung: The film shows the work in a bucket watermill in Rudaria. The work is carried out in the following sequence: readjustment of the sluice board and starting up of the mill, filling the corn into the hopper, lifting the runner with the aid of a lifting device and adjusting the milling course; after conclucing the milling shovelling the flour out, cleaning the place and the stones, removing the unground corn grains from the hopper.

    Kurzfassung: Das Verdichten der Wolldecken erfolgt im Wirbelkorb, in dem ein starker Wasserstrahl das Gewebe in ständiger Bewegung hält. Nach dem Trocknen kommen die Decken zum Aufflauschen in die Rauftrommel, dann in die Rumpeltrommel, wo sie mit warmem Wasser behandelt werden. Beide Trommeln werden mit einem unterschlächtigen Schaufelrad betrieben. Nach einem kurzen Ausspülen im Wirbelkorb werden die Decken zum Trocknen aufgehängt.
    Kurzfassung: The film shows how woollen blankets are laid in a whirling basket to be soaked, they are later taken out and hung up to dry. In the next operation the blankets are stretched over a drum. When the drum is turned the blankets are dragged lightly over a bed of nails, and thus roughened. After being treated once more in the whirling basket, the blankets are laid in a tumbling drum. In this work phase, which can last from 14 - 24 hours, the desired compressing of the woven structure takes place. After a short rinse in the whirling basket the blankets are hung up to dry.

    Kurzfassung: Dicke Fichtenstämme werden im Hof mit Beil und Keilen aufgespalten, in der Stube mit einer Schablone auf verschiedene Schindellänge gemessen und mit der Handsäge gesägt. Auf der Schnitzbank erfolgt dann die Bearbeitung zu Schindeln mit dem Schindelmesser, dem Schlegel und dem Zugmesser. Außer der Arbeitstechnik zeichnet der Film auch die Verhaltensweise des arbeitenden Menschen auf.
    Kurzfassung: Thick pine logs are split in the courtyard with a hatchet and wedges. Inside the house the slips of wood are marked off with the use of a pattern and cutcu with a hand saw to different length. The shaping into shingles is done on the carver's bench by means of the shingle knife, the mallet, and the draw knife. Besides the working technique the film attaches great value to demonstrating the behaviour of the working man.

    Kurzfassung: Eine Frau aus der Siedlung Laro auf Lomlom löst weiße und schwarze Baststreifen von Bananenstauden und reinigt sie. Dann webt sie auf einem horizontalen Trennstabwebgerät einen Männertanzschurz in Leinenbindung mit eingezogener schwarzer Musterung und Ziergehänge.
    Kurzfassung: At the outskirts of the village of Laro on the island Ngabelipa (Lomlom) a woman loosens white and black strips of bast from banana bushes. She cleans the bast in front of her dwelling with a mussel shell, then puts the supplies in the roof truss to be stored until further weaving. She goes on with the work she has begun on a horizontal weaving loom with separating rod, on which she produces a man's cloth-bound dancing apron. Again and again one can see the changing formation of compartments, the shuttle passing, and the final thread "hitting". The pattern is made by black banana bast fibres being drawn in with a wooden needle. Decorative pendants and ornamental strips of leaf are worked into it.

    Kurzfassung: In the bushland of Fenualoa (Ngasinue) a man fells a palm in order to obtain hardwood for making arrow-heads. In addition he cuts cane for arrow shafts. In the village of Malumbu the man carves an arrow-head with a barb. He hardens it over a fire, dips the end into resin of the bread-fruit tree and pushes it into one of the pieces of cane which he then shortens to the length of an arrow-shaft. The shafting part and the notched end of the shaft are wound round with coconut fibres. The man hardens the end of the shaft with some embers. Finally he tests the completed arrow by a few shots.

    Kurzfassung: In the bushland on Fenualoa (Ngasinue) a man cuts a treeshoot in order to obtain elastic wood for making a bow. From another tree he loosens a strip of bark bast for the string. In the village of Malumbu the man carves a bow rod (reflex bow) with the inside flat and the outside convex which has mortised ends. The "string" is then twisted from strands of the dried bast. The man bends the bow with it and shoots a test arrow.

    Kurzfassung: Die Schafschur wird im Freien von Männern durchgeführt. Das gemolkene Schaf wird auf den Rücken gelegt. Mit einer Schere werden ihm der Reihe nach Hals, Bauch, Rücken und Schwanz geschoren. Das Vlies wird zusammengerollt und zu einem Bündel verknotet.

    Kurzfassung: The wood processing home industry has lost a great deal of value but in the Bavarian Forest it is still plays a certain part. The film shows how wood strips of two to three-finger width are split off from logs and how the strips are used for making a "Schwinge" (an oval basket). During the course of this work, the craftsman was interrupted only twice so that the settings reflect the natural continuity of the working process.

    Kurzfassung: In seiner Holzwerkstatt in St. Magdalena (Gsiestal) stellt Konrad Geitel aus Zirbelholzdauben, die mit Eisenreifen zusammengehalten werden, ein Stoßbutterfaß mit Stempel, Deckel und Haltebrett her. Das Butterfaß wird in die kreisrunde Öffnung des Haltebretts gestellt und von Halteseilen mit Holzhaken festgehalten. Zum Abschluß werden das Butterfaß mit roter und die Eisenreifen mit grüner Ölfarbe bemalt.
    Kurzfassung: In his small woodworking shop at St. Magdalena (Gsiestal) Konrad Gietel is making staves from pine wood for a churn. First he assembles the staves, then he applies cold glue, and finally he fits iron straps around the churn to keep the staves tightly together. After some time, while the glue has set, rough patches on the wood are removed with a plane, and the inside and outside surfaces are made smooth. A bottom piece is fitted. Gietel has cut a wooden die and fits a long handle. He makes the cover plug on a wood turning lathe, and then fits the churning board with the ropes. The churn (Schlacker) is finished by painting the staves red and the iron straps green.

    Kurzfassung: Shows all of the important steps undertaken in a ten-day working period as a house is constructed in the village of Buariki on the atoll Tabiteuea. This sleeping house is built in a style which has been customary in the Gilbert Islands since the seventh century - a four-post house of rectangular design with a gable roof, no walls, and a platform built about one meter off the ground. While the men finish the frame construction the women work to make roof coverings from old coconut palm leaves which are tied to the lattice work.

    Kurzfassung: In der Macherstube eines Bauernhofes in St. Jakob (Ahrntal) werden drei 3-4 m lange Baumstämme mit einem 2,5 m langen Rohrbohrer ausgehöhlt und die dickeren Enden konisch erweitert. Dann erfolgt das Verlegen eines Rohres in einen kleinen Graben und das Zuspitzen des dünnen Endes mit einem Beil. Anschließend wird es mit einem Zieheisen geglättet und in das liegengebliebene alte Stück des Wasserrohres eingeschoben. Undichte Stellen werden mit Moos abgedichtet. Die Rohre dienen als Wasserleitung von der Quelle zum Hof.
    Kurzfassung: The film shows how a water supply made of trunks is being repaired. Trunks of 3 - 4 meters length are hollowed out; a 2.5 m long tube drill is used. The thick ends of these wooden tubes are widened and cone-shaped with a special tool (kachler). In the field, the thin ends of the trunks are tapered off with an axe and smoothed with a draw knife, and assembled. One tube is placed into a small ditch in the ground. Leakages are packed with moss as sealing material. The tubes fitted together serve as water supply from a well to the farm buildings.

    Kurzfassung: A man from the village of Buariki harvests pandanus fruit in the bush. His wife back in the settlement prepares the fruit by mashing it, steaming it in an earth oven, and crushing the juicy base. The resulting pulpy substance is spread out on a leaf and is dried in the sun for a few days. These tuae are folded into packages and kept year-round as reserve food.

    Kurzfassung: Includes the entire process of preparing this pandanus dish beginning with the men who harvest the pandanus fruit in the bush near the village of Buariki. The women of the village cut the fruit, steam it in an earth oven, and knead the resulting mash into flat cakes. The cakes are placed in a bake oven overnight and then set out in the sun for about two weeks. After another brief period in the oven the hard cakes are broken up and pandanus leaf packages are filled with the pulverized substance.

    Kurzfassung: Ein erfahrener Bootsbauer von Buariki pflockt Leinen in den Abmessungen des benötigten Segels auf den Erdboden, schiebt eine Segelmatte darunter und näht sie, umgeschlagen um die Leinen, fest. Mit Pandanus-Blattstreifen wird gesäumt. Nachdem Rahe, Spiere und Schote befestigt sind, wird das Segel in verschiedenen Bootsmanövern ausprobiert.
    Kurzfassung: An experienced boat builder from the atoll Onotoa demonstrates the techniques used to attach a mat sail to a boat with strips of pandanus leaves. After the spar and boom are in place the sail is tested with various boat maneuvers.

    Kurzfassung: In der Siedlung Tetua stellt eine Familie in Gemeinschaftsarbeit Kokosfaserschnüre her: die faserigen Hüllen von frisch geernteten grünen Kokosnüssen werden abgelöst und für 2-3 Monate im Lagunenwatt vergraben. Die so gegerbten Hüllen werden geschlagen, gesäubert, getrocknet und von der Hausfrau auf ihrem Oberschenkel mit der flachen Hand zu kleinen Strängen und, verdoppelt, zu einer Schnur gedrillt.
    Kurzfassung: A man from the atoll Nonouti separates the fibrous hulls from freshly harvested green coconuts. Women bury these for two or three months in the lagoon mud. When the hulls are uncovered they are cut, cleaned, and dried. At that time a woman works with the fibers to create small strands which, when doubled, form a cord.

Anschließend werden die Stengel in einer abseits vom Gehöft liegenden Dörrgrube gedörrt, dann gebrochen und auf dem Hofplatz gehechelt.
    Kurzfassung: The gradual transformation of flax-stalks into spinning fibres is shown at different working places on the domain of a farm in St. Magdalena in the Gsieser valley of South Tyrol. First of all, the seminal capsules are removed from the stalks. This work is carried out in the feeding house. After this the stalks - now without capsules - are spread out over grass in thin layers where they go through the decaying process under the influence of the weather - this process is not shown in the film. In a drying pit, which lies apart from the farm, the stalks are then dried and broken and are, finally, combed on the courtyard.

    Kurzfassung: In der Siedlung Tetua bauen zwei Männer in fünftägiger Arbeit eine schwere Reuse in Giebeldachhausform aus Salzbuschschößlingen. Die Stäbe werden mit Kokosschnurwicklungen miteinander verbunden. Die fertige, mit Senksteinen beschwerte und mit Zugseil versehene Reuse wird beködert, ins Wasser geworfen und am nächsten Tag eingeholt.
    Kurzfassung: Shows the construction process of a moray eel trap as used in the village of Tetua on the atoll Nonouti. The house-like trap takes at least five working days to build and is weighted with a stone. Once fish bait has been added, the trap is lowered by a rope to the bottom of the reef. The trap is retrieved on the following day when an eel has been caught in it.

    Kurzfassung: Nach dem Zetteln (mit Hilfe von Zettelgatter und Haspel) und Aufziehen der Kette auf den Kettbaum sowie nach dem Schlichten der Kette beginnt der Webvorgang: Der Weber trägt den Schuß mit dem Schiffchen ein, wobei er jeden Eintrag mit dem Anschlagkamm fest an das Gewebe andrückt. Die Fachbildung erfolgt durch die Betätigung der Tritte, die mit den Schäften in Verbindung stehen. Nach Beendigung der Webarbeit wird der fertige Stoff (Leinwandbindung) vom Warenbaum abgenommen und kontrolliert.
    Kurzfassung: After preparing the warp by means of the warping frame and reel the warp is fixed to the loom. After fixing the front end of the warp to the take up roller and dressing the warp threads, the weaving process is started: The weaver inserts the weft by a shuttle and beats each weft thread into its appointed position in the fabric by means of the reed. By stepping on the pedals, which are connected to the shaft, the different sheds are formed. After finishing the weaving process the weaver removes the linen cloth (plain weave) from the loom and checks it.

    Kurzfassung: Mit Hilfe eines kleinen Webgerätes stellt der Weißberg-Bauer in St. Magdalena (Gsiestal) ein Gebrauchsband aus Leinengarn her: Von Garnspulen, auf Querstäben eines Rahmens angebracht, werden die einzelnen Fäden der Kette abgewickelt, die dann durch ein feststehendes Webebrett gezogen und auf eine Rolle gewickelt werden. Anschließend webt der Bauer das Band, indem er mittels eines vereinfachten Weberschiffchens den Schuß in die Kette einführt.
    Kurzfassung: In the "Stube" of the Weißberg-Hof in St. Magdalena, situated in the Gsieser Valley in South Tyrol, the formation stages of a "tape" (utilliy tape) are shown. First, the farmer prepares the small tape-Ioom for weaving. The individual threads of the "warp" are fed from bobbins attached to the horizontal bars of a frame, pulled through a fixed "board", and wound onto a roller. The farmer then weaves the "tape" by feeding the "weft" into the "warp", using a simplified form of shuttle.

Am Abend des Tages verzehren die Buben gemeinsam die gesammelten Lebensmittel.

    Kurzfassung: The rattle, a well-known noisy and musical instrument which in former times played an important part in various customary processes is, up to now, used in the southern German area and made on order by craftsmen in the villages. The film shows a cartwright making a rattle. Many of his instruments manufactured some time ago are used till nowadays, especially during the Holy Week.

    Kurzfassung: The film shows flax-spinning. The fine yarn is spun by the farmer's wife, the tow by the maid. The film presents both spinning procedures in comparison, in order to point out the different working methods. It shows all the stages of the spinning process from the fastening of the material, the drawing out of the starting thread, the feeding of the thread into the spindle, and the continuous spinning to the removing of the finished bobbin.

    Kurzfassung: Making of a pannier in the parlour of the Unterlacher-Hof at ST. Jakob (Ahrntal). The pannier consists of a narrow wooden base into which the canes are fitted, which then spread out towards the top and are woven into the split strips of wicker made of stone pine (Pinus cembra L.).

Zum Schluß werden typische Kokosschnurbindungen bei einer Bootsreparatur gezeigt.
    Kurzfassung: Old men harvest certain coconuts, remove the hulls, and bury these in the mud at the lagoon. After three months the hulls are recovered, cleaned, and dried. The elders of the community then gather to prepare rope from the fibers of the coconut hulls. Three types of cord are produced using two, three, or four strains of the fiber. Typical coconut-fiber cord bindings are shown being used in boat repair.

Das 9,95 m lange, 7,25 m breite und 5,35 m hohe, aus Holz erbaute und mit Pandanusblättern bedeckte Haus dient als Familienschlafhaus.
    Kurzfassung: Gives a complete overview of the 19 working days needed to build a sleeping house on Niutao. The work is initiated by the master house builder who supervises the construction. The structure is a four-post house of rectangular design which has a large gabled roof and a straight ridge. Timber is cut from the surrounding bush; individual pieces are tied together with coconut-fiber cord. The roof is made up of treated pandanus leaves.

    Kurzfassung: Mädchen flechten einen Korb aus einem frischen Kokospalmblatt und füllen ihn mit Düngeblättern. Ein alter Mann erntet eine Pulakaknolle und pflanzt ihren Stengel in die entstandene Grube, nachdem er die Blätter als Gründüngung in das Loch gelegt hat. Anschließend pflegt er ältere Pulaka, indem er Haltestäbe in den Boden steckt, diese mit geflochtenen Ringen zusammenhält und Gründüngung dazugibt.
    Kurzfassung: Specially cultivated taro pits are used to grow a crude variety of dry taro (pulaka) on the coral island of Niutao. Typical cultivation work is shown here: girls collect leaves for the foundation; an old man harvests a pulaka tuber and plants the resulting stalks; and a one-year-old plant is treated with soil and fertilizing leaves.

Nach einem Festmahl wird das fertiggestellte, brandungstüchtige Paddelboot auf dem offenen Meer erprobt.
    Kurzfassung: Shows all of the important phases of construction as a master boat builder and his people build an outrigger boat in the old style of Niutao. Trees are felled and individual parts are cut out of them - the hull, bow and stern pieces, planks, outrigger, etc. Precision and the assembly process are done and coconut-fiber cord is used to connect the pieces. After eight working days the craft is finished; a feast is held, and the boat is tested in the open sea.

    Kurzfassung: Eine Frau schält die Knollen, schneidet sie in Stücke und stopft sie in Kokosnußschalen. Dazu gibt sie die Milch von gepreßtem Kokossamenfleisch und deckt sie zu. Dann bereitet sie einen Erdofen. Nach dem Dünsten werden die Behälter zerschlagen.
    Kurzfassung: A woman shells pulaka tubers (a variety of dry taro) with a small axe and cuts them into pieces. Coconut shells are filled with the pulaka pieces and a mixture of coconut meat and milk. An earth oven is prepared in order to steam several of these "containers."

    Kurzfassung: Nach Beschaffung von Bauholz und Kokospalmblättern im Busch für das Dach errichten mehrere Männer auf dem Siedlungsplatz in Gemeinschaftsarbeit eine 2,6 m lange, 1,75 m breite und 2 m hohe Erdofenhütte. Am zweiten Tag wird ein Erdofen für das abschließende gemeinsame Mahl angelegt.
    Kurzfassung: Wood is cut in order to be used in the construction of a simple earthoven hut done in the old style. A native uses climbing cords and standing wood for assistance in cutting leaves from a coconut palm tree; the leaves are plaited into a roof covering. On the second work day the hut is finished and plans are made for the earthoven.

    Kurzfassung: Im Dorf Sigatoka (Insel Viti Levu) stellen Frauen aus mit Sand und Wasser gemischtem und geknetetem Ton Kochtöpfe her. Aus der Tonmasse werden drei Lappen geformt und zu einem Topf zusammengesetzt, der mit Klopfholz und Stein bearbeitet, gedehnt und geformt wird. Nach dem Trocknen werden die Töpfe mit ihren Öffnungen nach außen im Brennhaufen gebrannt.
    Kurzfassung: Women from the island Viti Levu make cooking pots from clay mixed with sand and water. They form a vessel from three clay slabs and continue work with paddle and anvil to widen the pot. After drying the pots are pitfired.

    Kurzfassung: Im Dorf Vunavutu (Insel Viti Levu) stellen Frauen aus mit Sand gemischtem und geknetetem Ton Wasserschalen her. Sie werden aus einem Tonklumpen mit den Händen unter Zuhilfenahme eines Steines und eines Schlagbrettchens geformt und geglättet. Die am Rand mit Ritzverzierungen versehenen, luftgetrockneten Schalen werden im Brennhaufen gebrannt und erhalten anschließend eine Scheinglasur durch Einreiben mit Baumharz.
    Kurzfassung: The second part shows modelling of water bowls from a single clay-lump, using again paddle and anvil. The decorated dried dishes are pit-fired and then sealed with resin.
