    Abstract: In 2015 many camps were opened to accommodate newly arriving migrants in Berlin. Christian Sowa studies this form of accommodation. Moving beyond an exclusive focus on borders and migration, he argues that camp accommodation must be thought of and studied as part of the urban context and as a specific form of housing. The study provides an in-depth case study, discusses policy alternatives, argues for »housing for all instead of camps«, and contributes to bringing urban and migration studies into public discussion. In times of new waves of migration, the topic of migrant accommodation within urban environments remains highly relevant today.

    Abstract: "Looking at a range of cases from around the Transpacific, the contributors to this book explore the complex formulations of race and racism emerging from the transoceanic migration and encounters in the region. Asia has a history of ceaseless, active, and multidirectional migration which continues to bear multilayered and complex genetic diversity. The traditional system of rank order between groups of people in Asia consisted of multiple 'invisible' differences in variegated entanglements, including descent, birthplace, occupation, and lifestyle. Transpacific migration brought about the formation of multilayered and complex racial relationships, as the physically indistinguishable yet multifaceted racialized groups encountered the hegemonic racial order deriving from the transatlantic experience of racialization based on 'visible' differences. Each chapter in this book examines a different case study, identifying their complexities and particularities, while contributing to a broad view of the possibilities for solidarity and human connection in a context of domination and discrimination. These cases include the dispossession of the Ainu people, the experiences of Burakumin emigrants in America, the policing of colonial Singapore, and data governance in India.     Abstract: "Superdiversity explores processes of diversification and the complex, emergent social configurations that now supersede prior forms of diversity in societies around the world. Migration plays a key role in these processes, bringing changes not just in social, cultural, religious and linguistic phenomena, but also in the ways that these phenomena combine with others like gender, age and legal status. The concept of superdiversity has been adopted by scholars across the social sciences in order to address a variety of forms, modes and outcomes of diversification. Central to this field is the relationship between social categorization and social organization, including stratification and inequality. Increasingly complex categories of social "difference" have significant impacts across scales, from entire societies to individual identities. While diversification is often met with simplifying stereotypes, threat narratives, and expressions of antagonism, superdiversity encourages a perspective on difference as comprising multiple social processes, flexible collective meanings, and overlapping personal and group identities. A superdiversity approach encourages the re-evaluation and recognition of social categories as multidimensional, unfixed and porous as opposed to views based on hardened, one-dimensional thinking about groups. Diversification and increasing social complexity are bound to continue, if not intensify, in light of climate change. This will have profound impacts on the nature of global migration, social relations and inequalities. Superdiversity presents a convincing case for recognizing new social formations created by changing migration patterns and calls for a re-thinking of public policy and social scientific approaches to social difference. This introduction to the multidisciplinary concept of superdiversity will be of considerable interest to students and researchers in a range of fields in the humanities and social sciences"--

    Abstract: Berlin is increasingly emerging as a hub of Arab intellectual life in Europe. In this first study of Arab culture to zoom in on the thriving metropolis, the contributors shed light on the dynamics of transformation with Arabs as agents, subjects, and objects of change in the spheres of politics, society and history, gender, demographics and migration, media and culture, and education and research. The kaleidoscopic character of the collection, embracing academic articles, essays, interviews and photos, reflects critical encounters in Berlin. It brings together authors from inter- and multidisciplinary fields and backgrounds and invites the readers into a much-needed conversation on contemporary transformations. Hanan Badr is a professor and chair for public spheres and inequalities at the Department of Communication, Universität Salzburg, Austria, and AGYA alumna. Her work focuses on global inequalities and communication, comparing media systems, activism and media, diversifying communication research, and how globalization and digitization transform journalism. She won awards including the Kluge Fellowship at the Library of Congress and the DAAD Scholarship Award. Nahed Samour is post doc researcher at the Law & Society Institute at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. She works on public law in Germany, (the history of) international and Islamic law and investigates the role of religion, race, and gender in law.

Florian Ohnmacht analysiert biographisch-narrative Interviews mit männlichen* antirassistischen Aktivisten ohne eigene Rassismuserfahrungen. Dabei stellt er die Subjektbildungsprozesse im Rahmen ihrer Auseinandersetzungen mit den jeweiligen sozialen und politischen Positionen in den Vordergrund

Aus einer postkolonialen Perspektive sagen die meist binären Konstruktionen über die echten und unechten Flüchtlinge mehr über das Eigene als über die Ankommenden aus. Über den Zeitraum von 1977-1999 betrachtet Nadine Sylla, wie der Asyldiskurs der Bundesrepublik Konstruktionen des Eigenen hervorbringt. Sie untersucht, welche Beziehungsverhältnisse, Deutungsmuster und Wissensordnungen über Migration vorherrschen und wie sich diese über die Zeit verändern

    Abstract: How to study a media object on the web that is at the same time a documentary, a reportage, and a game which combines both fiction and non-fiction elements? Nicole Braida digs into the discursive and material structures and infrastructures of serious games, text-adventures, newsgames, interactive maps, and data visualizations, in which refugees and migrants become the subject of humanitarian discourse. Although the goal is to arouse empathy towards migrants, these »interactive practices« distinguish who is vulnerable and who is not. It supports the idea of a »migratory crisis«, which, the author argues, is actually the symptom of a deeper crisis of the humanitarian system itself.

    Abstract: Wie werden geflüchtete Kinder, die erstmals mit dem deutschen Bildungssystem in Kontakt kommen, unterrichtet und welche ungleichheitsrelevanten Folgen ergeben sich für sie daraus?Verstärkte Flucht- und Migrationsbewegungen werfen diese und weitere Fragen zur Beschulungspraxis auf. Mit einer qualitativen Studie zur Inklusion von neu in lokale Schulsysteme migrierten Schüler*innen rekonstruiert Judith Jording Differenzierungspraxen von Schüler*innen als sogenannte »Seiteneinsteiger*innen« und daran anknüpfende Selektionsprozesse an bildungsbiografisch relevanten Entscheidungsstellen in Grundschulen. Mit Blick auf die Organisation Schule diskutiert sie die Mechanismen der Erzeugung von Bildungsungleichheit

    Abstract: "The book studies multilateral population security issues and relevant governance strategies caused by international migration in the countries impacted by China's Belt and Road Initiative and their border areas. Buttressed by solid data mining and policy analysis, the title looks into the demographic trends of international migration in China and some Asian Belt and Road countries and stresses the urgency for more effective governance practices. Seeking to address the population security crisis triggered by the Initiative, the authors propose the idea of "multilateral population security governance", grounded in the real-world challenges facing Belt and Road countries while also drawing on experiences of migration governance in western countries. As a new governance model, it calls for cross-border joint action and takes into consideration pertinent factors including economy, politics, culture, religion and commerce. Several case studies and comparative studies are offered in the chapters to illuminate the significance and effect of this cooperative mechanism.     Abstract: Der inklusive Freiwilligendienst weltwärts ist eine privilegierte Form der räumlichen Bewegung, die als solche selten Gegenstand der erziehungswissenschaftlichen Migrationsforschung ist. Manuel Peters erkundet aus migrationspädagogischer und rassismuskritischer Perspektive die komplexen Aneignungsweisen rassifizierter Ordnungen innerhalb dieser Mobilität. Mithilfe postkolonialer, macht- und rassismusanalytischer sowie bildungstheoretischer Ansätze zeigt er, wie Aneignungsweisen als spezifische, interaktiv hervorgebrachte und (global-)gesellschaftlich verortete Subjektivierungspraktiken bzw. Bildungsprozesse rekonstruiert werden können. Die weltwärts-Mobilität kann somit als bedeutsamer - postkolonialer - Zugehörigkeitskontext gedeutet werden, in dem sich vorherrschende Differenzordnungen der Migrationsgesellschaft aktualisieren.

Doch wie lässt sich latenter Rassismus konkret benennen - und: Wenn jenes »Wissen« uns alle umgibt, ist ein Sprechen jenseits rassistischer Zuschreibungen überhaupt möglich? Sabrina Schmidt rekonstruiert die vielfältigen Formen rassistischer Diskurs- und Argumentationspraxen und liefert so ein umfassendes Verständnis der Funktionsweise eines kommunikativen Alltagsrassismus, wie er vor allem von Personen der gesellschaftlichen Mitte realisiert wird

    Abstract: Towards a Vigilant Society sheds light on the emergence of a new society of vigilance, in particular the actions of anti-migrant groups around Dover and Calais. Based on field research on both sides of the channel, it studies the dynamics of these groups – midway between a social movement and vigilantism – at these two key points in the international migration route between the European Union and the United Kingdom. In recent years, a series of anti-migrant groups have been mobilising on both sides of the Channel to counter migrations. Their actions range from demonstrations, to violence against migrants. And by staging their actions on social media, which is an extraordinary sounding board, these groups can build an online community and a mass audience, influencing public opinion and even the migration policies of states.

    Abstract: This book explores the interaction between three key aspects of everyday life-language, writing, and mobility -with particular focus on their effects on language contact. While the book adopts an established view of language and society that is in keeping with the sociolinguistic paradigm developed in recent decades, it differs from earlier studies in that it assigns writing a central position. Sociolinguistics has long concentrated primarily on speech,but Florian Coulmas shows in this volume that the social importance of writing should not be disregarded: it is the most consequential technology ever invented; it suggests stability; and it defines borders. Linguistic studies have often emphasized that writing is external to language, but thediscipline nevertheless owes its analytic categories to writing. Finally, the digital revolution has fundamentally changed communication patterns, transforming the social functions of writing and consequently also of language

    Abstract: Die öffentlichen Bilder und Diskurse über die jüngsten Fluchtmigrationsbewegungen lösen im Kontext des europäischen Grenzregimes eine Art moralische Panik aus. Im Gegensatz dazu plädiert Frauke Schacht für eine Denkhaltung, aus der Menschen als handelnde Personen, als Expertinnen ihres eigenen Lebens in Erscheinung treten: Eine Haltung, die nicht nur die hegemoniale Normalität dekonstruiert, sondern neue Perspektiven auf marginalisierte Geschichten, alltägliche Erfahrungen und kreative (Über-)Lebensstrategien eröffnet. Damit liefert sie eine konzeptionelle Idee für eine zukünftige Forschung zum Thema Flucht, die die Perspektive der Flüchtenden ins Zentrum stellt.

    Abstract: Die öffentlichen Bilder und Diskurse über die jüngsten Fluchtmigrationsbewegungen lösen im Kontext des europäischen Grenzregimes eine Art moralischer Panik aus. Im Gegensatz dazu plädiert Frauke Schacht für eine Denkhaltung, aus der Menschen als handelnde Personen, als Expert*innen ihres eigenen Lebens in Erscheinung treten: eine Haltung, die nicht nur die hegemoniale Normalität dekonstruiert, sondern neue Perspektiven auf marginalisierte Geschichten, alltägliche Erfahrungen und kreative (Über)Lebensstrategien eröffnet. Damit liefert sie eine konzeptionelle Idee für eine zukünftige Forschung zum Thema Flucht, die die Perspektive der Flüchtenden ins Zentrum stellt
