    Kurzfassung: The Ghrib-tribe is a confederation of nine sub-groups. Most of these sub-groups differ externally from each other in their way of wearing their turban. The film deals with the Jerarda-fashion, the Thwamer-fashion, the Fdiliyin-fashion, the Ghunayma-fashion, the Chaanba-fashion, and more individual fashions: the Kechta l-Hajjaj, the Sakim Mbarek-way and the Amara bin Masud or zemala-way of veiling.

    Kurzfassung: Aus verschieden gefärbten Sagopalmblattfasern und weißen Bastfasern eines Strauches stellt eine Frau einen Schurz her, indem sie die Fasern auf eine Hüftschnur knüpft. Sie legt den fertigen Schurz an, eine Freundin schneidet ihn auf die gewünschte Länge und nimmt die vom Färbeprozeß noch verbliebenen Bastreservierungen ab.
    Kurzfassung: Namburagua makes a women's skirt from differently dyed fibres of sago-palm leaves and white fibres of a marsh-plant. She ties the fibres to a waistband, then she puts on the skirt. A friend cuts the skirt to the desired length and removes the bark fibres left from the dyeing-process.

    Kurzfassung: The northwest Amazon river area is one of the principal centres of masks in South America. Among the Makuna masked festivals are held at the harvest of particular crops and play a large ritual role. The film shows the different stages of making a mask: making the reddish-brown bark cloth and twisting the threads, sewing on a hoop of liana as frame for the face, modelling the face of resin, and affixing balsa sticks serving as eyes and nose. Geomtric designs are then made on the face in white and yellow, a tuft of hair made of bark fibres is attached, and the completed mask is tried on. The mask symbolizes a fish demon.

    Kurzfassung: Aus den Blattfiedern der Sagopalme gewinnt eine Frau Fasern für ihren Schurz. Sie färbt sie mit zerschlagener Ingwerwurzel gelb, durch Kochen mit den Blättern des Awui-Baumes rot und durch Eingraben in Schlamm schwarz. Für den rückwärtigen Teil des Schurzes werden einige gelb gefärbte Faserstränge durch Abbinden mit Baumbast reserviert und rot sowie nach nochmaligem Abbinden schwarz gefärbt. Weiße Fasern gewinnt sie aus der Rinde eines Sumpfstrauches.
    Kurzfassung: The woman Namburagua makes the major part of the required fibres from the young sprout of a sago-palm. She dyes the fibres yellow with smashed ginger root, red by boiling them with the leaves of the awui tree, and black by using mud. Several yellow dyed fibres, reserved for the back of the skirt, are bound with bark fibre and dyed red, then, after a further bounding, dyed black. Another, white-coloured fibre is obtained by Namburagua from the bark of a marsh-plant, which has been soaked in water for one week to loosen the inner bark.

    Kurzfassung: The preparations for the West Syrian liturgy consist of three short ceremonies: preparing Eucharist bread and wine, vesting the liturgist, and the introductory prayer of the liturgy. Each piece of vestment and each liturgical act is of symbolical value. These ceremonies are performed before the beginning of the liturgy in the sacristy or beside the altar. In the film they are celebrated by the Archbishop of Mossul Gregorius Saliba.

Am nächsten Tag holt er sie aus der Grube, knetet sie, schneidet einen Schurz zu und näht zwei Lederstreifen zum Binden an. Anschließend legt er den Schurz an.
    Kurzfassung: A G/wi Bushman makes for himself a loincloth from antelope-skin. The skin is first "tanned", then cut and sewn.

    Kurzfassung: A Bushmen couple is seen making a women's loincloth. Cutting and sewing are chiefly done by the husband, while the woman prepares the decoration with springhare bones. The women's loincloth is in the main manufactured by the man.

Akteure: Sprecher, Müller, Weber - Weberin, Hanswurst - Weib, Schneider - Schneiderin, Schuster - Schusterin, Bauer - Bäuerin, Schreiber - Schreiberin, Chor der Männer und Weiber, Kapelle. Inhalt des Spiels: In der Mühle werden die Eheweiber auf Wunsch ihrer Männer verjüngt. Nachher verschmähen sie aber ihren alten Gatten und folgen jungen Kavalieren nach. Beim Hanswurstweib versagt die Mühle. Sie wird älter und häßlicher.
    Kurzfassung: The musical comedy with spoken insertions is performed after the Shrove Monday's carnival parade in the market-place. The performance is organized by the "Freie Narrenzunft" (Free Fool's Company). Actors: speaker, miller, weaver - weaver's wife, buffoon - buffoon's wife, taylor - taylor's wife, cobbler - cobbler's wife, peasant - peasant's wife, clerk - clerk's wife, chorus of men and women, band. Subject of the play: At their husband's desire the wives are rejuvenated in the mill, but afterwards reject their old husbands and follow youg gallants. As the buffoon also wants his wife to be rejuvenated, the mill fails and the buffoon's wife is older and uglier than ever before.

    Kurzfassung: Several children put on furs or rather coats and prepare for "Klaubauf" walking. After putting on the masks they all run out into the street where they imitate the movements and the behaviour of grown-up "Klaubauf" figures.

    Kurzfassung: Der Nikolaus besucht die Häuser und hält eine Ansprache. Sein Begleiter verteilt Nüsse. Auch andere verkleidete Gestalten, wie Lotter und Lütterin, Wunderarzt mit Begleiter, Kettenteufel, treten auf. Die mit Holzlarven maskierten Klaubaufgestalten versuchen, den in der Ecke der Stube stehenden Tisch zu entfernen und attackieren die Anwesenden.
    Kurzfassung: Santa Claus enters the houses and makes a speech. His attendant distributes nuts. Other disguised persons appear: "Lotter" and "Lütterin", quack doctor and attendant. The "Klaubaufs", disguised with wooden masks, try to remove the table in the corner of the room and attack the persons present.

    Kurzfassung: Ali Beidun, Besitzer eines Familienbetriebes in Qualmun, zeigt die einfachste Form der Ornamentierung eines kupfernen Schmucktellers vor der Kamera: Aufzeichnung der geometrischen Formen, Punzen und Ziselieren, Schreiben und Punzen dreier Wörter in arabischer Schrift. Als Abgrenzung des künstlerischen Feldes wird ein Schlußkreis auf dem Kupferteller gezogen. Diese Handwerkstechnik ist relativ neu im Libanon und zeigt arabisch-moslemischen Einfluß auf die einheimische Handwerkskultur.
    Kurzfassung: The film shows the decoration of a copper smth Ali Beidun in his workshop. The work is carried out in four stages: drawing the geometrical forms, punching and chasing, writing and chasing three words in Arabic, cutting a circle to limit the artistic field. This form of craftmanship is comparatively new in Lebanon and shows the Arabian-Moslem influence upon Lebanese handicraft.

Abschließend werden sie auf einen Sehnenfaden aufgefädelt bzw. angebunden und können nun von der Tochter als eine Art Kette getragen werden.
    Kurzfassung: A Bushman cuts from branches two sticks 30 cm long and one stick 5 cm long. He removes the bark, decorates the sticks, smears them with fat and blackens them. The sticks are tied one after another to a piece of sinew and so will be used by the man's daughter to perform her tasks in the ceremony of initiation. After the initiation, the girl will wear them as a kind of necklace.

Brauchträger war die Turn- und Sportunion.

    Kurzfassung: Ein Mann schneidet aus Streifengnuhaut zwei Stücke in grober Sandalenform zurecht. An der Sohle befestigt er vorne Lederbänder, die zwischen der großen und der zweiten Zehe hindurchlaufen, und hinten eine Schlaufe. Schließlich befestigt er die Sandalen an seinen Füßen, indem er die vorderen Riemen beiderseits der Hacke durch die Schlaufe führt und dann über dem Rist zusammenbindet.
    Kurzfassung: A man softens and stretches a piece of wildebeest hide. Selecting the best portions, he cuts two large pieces of skin which he then trims down to the shape of a sandal. He attaches to the sole the front thongs which pass between the first two toes and the leather loop which embraces the heel. Finally he fastens the sandals to his feet by passing the long thongs under the heel strap side of the foot and then tying them over the instep.

    Kurzfassung: The ceremony of dressing the Bishop is one of the old traditions of the Syrian Orthodox Church. Each piece of the Bishop's vestment and each act of the ceremony are of symbolic value. The dressing is accompanied by several prayers.

    Kurzfassung: A woman begins her work by preparing a strong fine sinew thread. Then from her string of unused beads, she removes four at a time and threads them up in parallel rows until she has made an entire band. This is joined at the proper length to fit around the head. On either side of this band she fastens one bead at a time, going round and round. Each of them is threaded and then the thread is passed through the thread of the bead lying below. When the desired width has been reached, the last bead is securely fastened.Such a band is about 5 cm wide.

    Kurzfassung: A young woman makes a comman ornament for men. She files and cleans a good supply of old peccary teeth on a grinding stone until they become white and once they are thus cleaned she drills holes through the teeth with a knife. Through these holes she will then string Mauritia palm fiber. She begins to string the teeth, alternating them with one or two glass beads for decoration and as a final touch to the finished necklace she attaches coloured cotton bands to the rear strings to form long, flowing tassels. The necklace is decorative but usually associated with Cofán ceremonies, especially the drinking of yahe.

    Kurzfassung: A woman breaks up an ostrich eggshell into small 1 sq cm pieces and then, with an awl, she drills through each a small hole. All the fragments are now strung on a strong piece of thread made of sinew. Holding each raw bead individually between her fingers she chips it until it is approximately round, working with a horn of harebeest (hammer) on a stone (anvil). Having completed all the chips, she oils them and then holds them tightly strung over a flat surface. She grinds them evently round with a piece of calcrete out of which a half-round groove has been gouged. The result is a string of equal sized and smooth beads.

In this condition they knead and work the skin until it is dry and soft. It is given to a girl as a cloak.

    Kurzfassung: Gäste vom Rio Ocamo, die zum Palmfest nach Klavateri gekommen sind, ziehen mit Bündeln und Waffen durch eine Bananenpflanzung, verzehren dort das von den Gastgebern ausgelegte Wildbret sowie Palmfrüchte und Getränke. Tänzer werden bemalt und geschmückt, umkreisen in rhythmischem Lauf den Dorfplatz, schwingen Waffen und Palmwedel und werden in der Mitte von nichtgeschmückten Männern zum Schein angegriffen.
    Kurzfassung: Equipped with bundles, then men also carrying their arms, the participants of the festival walk across a banana plantation. There they also eat the game killed on the preceding hunting. Everybody then paints his body and puts on ornaments for dancing the bleigei-dance in the village. The dancers first appear one by one, moving around the village square waving their bows and arrows and palm branches. Boys too take part in the dancing. The dancers then move once more around the village square all at a time. A group of men keeps motionless in the centre of the circle, another one performs a kind of mock attack.

    Kurzfassung: Fünf Frauen tanzen, indem sie durch rhythmische Körperbewegungen ihren großen, spiraligen Halsschmuck aus Messing in Schwingung versetzen. Dabei wird der Schmuck zeitweise über den Kopf nach vorn gestülpt. Aufgenommen mit 20 B/s; Vorführgeschw. 18 B/s.

    Kurzfassung: Arrival of the bridal procession with palanquins, musicians and laterns at the home of the father-in-law: protective magic, adoration of heaven and earth, unveiling with following meal, decoration of the bride, symbolic bridal meal (cake, noodles), putting on the hairdress, honouring of the relatives.

    Kurzfassung: Auf ein nach oben verjüngtes, pyramidenförmiges Gerüst aus drei Stecken, die mit Reifen zusammengehalten sind, werden auf Schnüre aufgereihte Schilfblätter schuppenartig von unten nach oben angebunden. Gekrönt wird es von einem Margeritenstrauß. Vier so ausgerüstete Pfingstkönige (Pfingstdreck) mit Begleitern ziehen in einem Heischegang durch das Dorf von Haus zu Haus, wobei sie ihren Wirbeltanz und die drei Verbeugungen aufführen und Geldspenden erhalten. Brauchträger sind die 12-14jährigen Jungen.
    Kurzfassung: A pyramid-shaped frame of three poles, held together by tyres, is covered from bottom to top by scale-like reed leaves tied together on string; bouquet of ox-eye daisies crowns the top; four Whitsun Kings (Pfingstdreck), equipped in this manner and accompanied by others, procede in Heischegang through the village from house to house; in exchange for donations of money, they perform their whirling dance and three bows; traditional carriers are boys aged 12 -14 years.
