    Abstract: Basierend auf Mythen und Legenden erzählt der Film auf verschiedene Weise die Geschichte der peruanischen Anden und des Dorfes Balta, einer Siedlung der Kashinawa, und seiner Bevölkerung. Zugleich gibt er Einblicke in das Alltagsleben (Brandrodung, Jagd, Nahrung) der Kashinawa. Es kommen unterschiedliche Erzählansätze (Legenden, im Schulunterricht) zur Anwendung.
    Abstract: Based on myths and legends, the film shows different ways of telling the history of the Cashinahua people and of Balta village in the Peruvian Andes. We also learn about everyday culture (slash-and-burn agriculture, hunting, food). Different strategies of telling history and stories (legends, school lessons) are applied.

    Abstract: Anthropologist/filmmaker Barbara Keifenheim studied the Kashinawa (Huni Kuin) of the Peruvian lowlands from 1977 until 1996. In this film, co-directed by Patrick Deshayes and originally made in a German and French version in 1984 using older film excerpts from a film from 1951 by Harald Schultz, the Indians speak about their cultural values, cosmology, rituals and their encounters with the Whites' world. Images of everyday life and work in metal-production from Germany are shown to the Indians and interpreted by them. Film images appear to them like their drug visions. The English version of 2009 contains concluding statements about cultural change in the Indians' world since the 1980s. (German subtitles, see film C 12693)

    Abstract: Der experimentelle Dokumentarfilm reflektiert Besonderheiten eines Aufeinandertreffens westafrikanischer und europäisch/westlicher Kultur. Er stellt Westeuropäer vor, die einige Jahre in Westafrika lebten, zeigt Straßensituationen, erzählt Begebenheiten, sammelt Materialien und Eindrücke von den Reisen der Filmemacherin nach Ghana, Benin und in den Senegal. Gisa, die mit ihrer Tochter Madita mehrere Jahre in Burkina Faso lebte, beschreibt Momente der Nähe und Fremdheit dort. Vertrautes zeigt sich im fremden Umfeld manchmal grotesk, manchmal poetisiert. Bilder und Motive möglicher Faszination und Sehnsucht nach dem Anderen kontrastieren mit der Frage, ob ein Kontakt zur Fremde überhaupt möglich ist. Der Film ist auf Super-8 und Mini-DV gedreht. Durch die Materialwirkungen und den Wechsel von Momentaufnahmen und aus der Zeit gehobenen bildhaften Einstellungen entsteht gelegentlich ein schwebender Zustand zwischen Vorstellung und konkretem Alltag.
    Abstract: The experimental documentary reflects the encounter between West African and European/Western culture, introducing Europeans who lived in West Africa for some years. It shows situations on the streets, tells stories, collects materials and impressions from journeys of the film maker to Ghana, Benin and Senegal. Gisa, who lived with her daughter Madita in Burkina Faso for several years, recalls moments of closeness and foreignness. The most trusted things can sometimes appear grotesque, sometimes poeticized in a foreign environment. Images and stories of a potential fascination and longing for the Other contrast with the question whether a contact to the foreign is possible at all. The film was shot on super-8 and mini-DV. The material effects and the alternation between vivid shots and quasi timeless picturesque scenes occasionaly create a blur between imagination and plain everyday life.

Padu bedeutet "Bitterkeit", der Oktober steht im Zeichen von Padu und Hala (Hitze), läßt Menschen erkranken, Tier und Pflanze darben. Die Padu-Zerermonie dient der Vertreibung dieser Übel, beschwört das lebensspendende Wasser und erneuert die sozialen Beziehungen. Gleichzeitig dient sie der Vorbereitung von Nyale, der Regenzeremonie im Februar, dem Beginn der Reispflanzung.     Abstract: Laboya is situated on the southern coast of West Sumba (Eastern Indonesia), an island never introduced to Hindu culture. Not until the beginning of the 20th century did Christianity and then Islam reach the Sumbanese. Even nowadays most people say they believe in Marapu, a term referring to their ancestors. It is the task of the living to nourish and pray to ancestral spirits in order to receive their blessings. Padu and Nyale are the two ceremonies marking the annual agricultural cycle (rice, maize and cassava). Padu means bitterness. October is a month of 'bitterness' and 'heat' (hala) causing people to fall ill, and preventing animals and plants from thriving. The Padu ceremony is to get rid of these ills, to let the life-giving water flow again and to renew social bonds. The Padu ritual also serves to prepare the rain rituals of Nyale which take place in February, when the rice planting season is re-opened. During the Nyale rituals the arrival of Nyale seaworms (announcing heavy rainfall) means the ancestral blessing has been given. (Research footage of low technical quality). Not until the beginning of the 20th century did Christianity and then Islam reach the Sumbanese. Even nowadays most people say they believe in Marapu, a term referring to their ancestors. It is the task of the living to nourish and pray to ancestral spirits in order to receive their blessings. Padu and Nyale are the two ceremonies marking the annual agricultural cycle (rice, maize and cassava). Padu means bitterness. October is a month of 'bitterness' and 'heat' (hala) causing people to fall ill, and preventing animals and plants from thriving. The Padu ceremony is to get rid of these ills, to let the life-giving water flow again and to renew social bonds. The Padu ritual also serves to prepare the rain rituals of Nyale which take place in February, when the rice planting season is re-opened. During the Nyale rituals the arrival of Nyale seaworms (announcing heavy rainfall) means the ancestral blessing has been given. (Research footage of low technical quality).     Abstract: Das Leben der Moorkolonisten, die abseits der Wasserstraßen in den abgelegenen Mooren Ostfrieslands siedelten, war erbärmlich. Der desolate Zustand der Wege schnitt sie im Herbst und Winter von der Außenwelt ab, vor ihren Hütten türmte sich übermannshoch das Moor auf. Die lebensfeindlichen Bedingungen werden greifbar, wenn sich die Protagonisten an die kleinen Kolonistenhäuser erinnern, in denen sie Tür an Tür mit Schaf und Ziege lebten; wenn sie berichten, wie mühselig es war, das Moor Meter für Meter abzutorfen und das neue Land zu kultivieren; wenn sie uns zeigen, wo immer wieder die Pferde eingesackt sind, wenn sie die mit Torf beladenen Wagen aus dem Moor ziehen sollten. Bei diesen Erzählern handelt es sich um die letzte Generation derjenigen, die wie ihre Vorfahren direkt am Moor siedelten und einen Eindruck davon hinterlassen können, was es heißt, ein Kolonist zu sein.
    Abstract: The life of the moor colonists who settled beyond the waterways in the outlying moors of East Frisia was miserable. The desolate condition of the paths isolated them from the outside world in fall and winter, in front of their huts the moor towered head-high. These hostile conditions become tangible when the protagonists remember their small houses where they lived door to door with sheep and goats, when they tell how arduous it was to harvest the peat meter by meter and to cultivate the land; when they show us the places where the horses used to be bogged down with their turf loaded waggons. The protagonists belong to the last generation of settlers who colonized the moor like their ancestors and who can give us an idea of what it means to be a colonist.

    Abstract: Die Moore Ostfrieslands sind abgetorft - das Land präsentiert sich kultiviert. Dennoch: Nahezu alle Ostfriesen verbindet noch immer eine ganz besondere Beziehung zu dem Stoff, der ihr Land einstmals meterhoch bedeckte. Ob Liebe oder Hass: Das Moor hat die Mentalität der Ostfriesen geprägt wie sonst vielleicht nur das Wasser. Auch wenn der Kampf mit dem Moor keine Existenzen mehr beeinflusst, so sind die Spuren, die er hinterlassen hat, doch weiterhin sichtbar: In den Tradierungen, den Geschichten, Legenden und Erinnerungen der Menschen. Und vor allem in den Symbolen des Torfgrabens: Der "Tweekrieger", der "Sticker" und die Torfkarre. Diese Arbeitsgeräte rufen bei wohl jedem Ostfriesen mit starken Emotionen besetzte Assoziationen hervor. Bei diesem Filmprojekt stehen die Erinnerungen an eine Arbeit im Mittelpunkt, die noch vor wenigen Jahrzehnten das Leben der Ostfriesen bestimmte wie keine andere.
    Abstract: East Friesland's moors nowadays are cutaway bogs. The landscape is cultivated. Still, most East Frisians have a special connection with the stuff that once covered their land meters high. For love or hate: the moor has shaped the East Frisians' mentality like probably only the water was able to. Even if the rigours with the moor do not influence any livelihoods, the traces it left are still visible: in the traditions, stories, legends, peoples' memories. And above all in the symbols of cutting peat: the "Tweekieger", the "Sticker" and the peat kart. For their associations, these tools still arouse strong emotions in any East Frisian. This film project focuses on the memories of a work that only a few decades ago determined the lives of East Frisians like no other.

    Abstract: Das Unternehmen erscheint ungeheuerlich: Spatenstich für Spatenstich, Meter für Meter, Tag für Tag, Jahr für Jahr gruben sich die ostfriesischen Fehntjer ins unendliche Moor, um es dann auf ihren kleinen Torfschiffen in die nahegelegenen Städte zu verschiffen; von dort brachten sie Stallmist, Fäkalien der Städter und Sand aus der Ems zur Kultivierung der abgetorften Moorfläche mit. Alles per Hand. Die Kanäle wurden zu den Straßen Ostfrieslands und die Schiffe mit ihren Besatzungen zum Inbegriff von Mobilität, zum weithin sichtbaren Symbol für Beweglichkeit und Freiheit. Im Film wird dieses Bild zurechtgerückt: Die Fehntjer präsentieren sich in ihrem unermüdlichen Kampf als Idealtyp der Menschheitsgeschichte - gegen jede Unbill ankämpfend machen sie sich ihre Umwelt zur Heimat - nach ihrem Bilde. Eine Landschaft, die sich uns heute adrett, aufgeräumt und als "typischer" ostfriesischer Naturraum präsentiert, erscheint so in einem anderen Licht.
    Abstract: The operation seems monstrous: spade by spade, meter by meter, day after day, year after year the East Frisian 'Fehntjer' dug the endless moor to ship the peat to nearby towns in their little peat ships. In order to cultivate the cutaway bogs, they brought back dung, town-dwellers' faeces and sand from the river Ems. All by hand. The channels became the East Frisian roads, and along with them the ships and their crew became the quintessence of mobility, the evident symbol of freedom. In the film this impression is adjusted. In their tireless struggle the 'Fehntjer' present themselves as the ideal type of mankind. Fighting against any rigours, they make their land their homeland - formed after their image. A landscape that nowadays seems to be smart, neat, tidy, the "typical" East Frisian natural landscape appears in another light.

    Abstract: Laboya liegt an der Südküste Westsumbas (Ostindonesien), einer Insel, die aufgrund ihrer Lage nie von der Hindu-Kultur beeinflusst worden war. Erst zu Beginn des 20. Jhs. wurden Christentum und Islam auf Sumba eingeführt. Noch heute glauben die Einwohner an den Einfluß der Ahnen. Die Lebenden müssen sie nähren und für sie beten, um ihren Segen zu erhalten. Padu und Nyale bilden die beiden Hauptzeremonien im Jahreskreis dieser Ackerbaukultur (Reis, Mais und Maniok). Padu bedeutet "Bitterkeit", der Oktober steht im Zeichen von Padu und Hala (Hitze), läßt Menschen erkranken, Tier und Pflanze darben. Die Padu-Zerermonie dient der Vertreibung dieser Übel, beschwört das lebensspendende Wasser und erneuert die sozialen Beziehungen. Gleichzeitig dient sie der Vorbereitung von Nyale, der Regenzeremonie im Februar, dem Beginn der Reispflanzung. Das Erscheinen der Nyale-Meereswürmer als Vorboten der kommenden schweren Niederschläge bezeugt den Segen der Ahnen. (Forschungsfilmaufnahmen minderer technischer Qualität).     Abstract: Sorbe ist, wer sich als Sorbe bekennt - so die offizielle Definition der sorbischen Minderheit, festgeschrieben in der sächsischen Landesverfassung. Weder Abstammung noch Sprache sind entscheidend: Was zählt, ist das Zugehörigkeitsgefühl, die Selbst-Definition. "Sorbe sein - Sorbe bleiben" erzählt aus der Sicht "bekennender" sorbischer Jugendlicher aus Bautzen davon, was es eigentlich bedeutet, sorbisch zu sein. Die sorbische Sprache zu sprechen, an der sorbischen Kultur teilzuhaben, der katholische Glaube, der Wunsch und die Schwierigkeit, einen sorbischen Partner zu finden - all das sind Bausteine einer sorbischen Identität, die alles andere als einheitlich ist und die sich neben und innerhalb der deutschen Identität behaupten muss. Für die Jugendlichen geht "sorbisch sein" weit darüber hinaus, an sorbischen Traditionen wie dem Osterreiten oder einer Trachtentanzgruppe teilzunehmen - ein sorbisches Kabarett oder eine sorbische Jugendgruppe, die Feten, Veranstaltungen und der Austausch mit anderen Minderheiten, zeugen davon.
    Abstract: A Sorb is anybody who claims to be a Sorb - thus the official definition of the Sorbian minority, as it is codified in the Saxonian Constitution. Neither genealogy nor language matter, decisive is the feeling of belonging, the self-definition. The film tells its story from the angle of Sorbian youths from Bautzen, telling us what it means to be a Sorb. To speak the Sorbian language, to share the Sorbian culture, the Catholic faith, the desire and difficulty to find a Sorbian spouse - all these are elements of a Sorbian identity which is all but uniform and has to prove itself inside the German identity. For Sorbian youths "to be a Sorb" goes far beyond practising the Sorbian traditions like Easter riding or attending folklore groups - a Sorbian cabaret, a Sorbian youth group, their parties, events and the cooperation with other minorities bear witness to this.

    Abstract: This film is a portrait of the filmmaker's uncle, the patriarch Haj Taghi, an old bazaar shoe merchant in Borujerd, Western Iran. After a car accident he had to hand over business to his sons. They talk about the economic and family problems, many of them resulting from the changes from traditional to modern values in contemporary Iranian society.

Heute wird Kava vor allem außerhalb ritueller Anlässe konsumiert und für den globalen Markt produziert. Für viele Pazifikinsulaner aber wird Kava immer eines bleiben - der Trank der Götter.
    Abstract: This film, set in Vanuatu, Fiji and Samoa, gives insight into Kava rituals as they are carried out today. But Kava is more than just a cultural relic, it is becoming a symbol of identity for many Pacific Islanders as for Oceania as a whole. Through Kava, a drink made from the root of a pepperplant, friendships are formed, visitors welcomed, and chiefly authority sanctioned. Today, Kava is increasingly bought, sold and consumed within non-ritual contexts. It is extracted, packaged, and produced for global markets. But for many Pacific Islanders, Kava will always remain: the drink of the Gods.

    Abstract: Bei den Wana, die als Halbnomaden im indonesischen Regenwald leben, ist Indo Pino eine allseits anerkannte Schamanin. Ihr Neffe konvertierte vor einigen Monaten zum Christentum und predigt nun apokalyptische Visionen. Für ihn steht fest: wenn diese Visionen von Gott stammen, müssen die Visionen der Schamanen von Satan kommen. Ausgehend von der christlichen Idee der Erbsünde, werden die Begriffe "gut" und "böse" überdacht und die traditionellen Heilmethoden der Schamanen stark angegriffen.     Abstract: Among the Wana people, semi-nomads from the Indonesian forest, Indo Pino is a shaman recognized by everybody. Her nephew, who is also a shaman's son, converted to Christianity some months ago and is now preaching apocalyptic visions. And for him, if these visions come from God, the visions of the shamans inevitably must come from Satan. Through the Christian concepts of sin and original fault, good and evil notions are revised.     Abstract: Der Dokumentarfilm unternimmt eine Reise in die Welt der traditionellen Heilkunde Mosambiks. Heiler und Heilerinnen aus dem Norden (matrilinear) und Süden (patrilinear) zeigen und erläutern ihre Behandlungsweisen bei psychosozialen Erkrankungen. Der Film ermöglicht ein besseres Verständnis des afrikanischen traditionellen Heilsystems, um den Austausch mit der modernen Medizin zu fördern und eine wirksame, kulturell angepaßte sozialmedizinische Gesundheitsversorgung und Prävention in Mosambik aufzubauen, die vor allem bei der AIDS-Prävention dringend benötigt wird. Der Film soll den in den vergangenen Jahren begonnenen Dialog zwischen Tradition und Moderne unterstützen.
    Abstract: Documentary on traditional medicine in Mozambique. Healers from the north (matrilinear) and the south (patrilinear) show and explain their treatment of psychosocial illnesses. The film facilitates a better understanding of the traditional African healing system to promote the exchange with modern medicine and to establish a working, culturally adapted socialmedical health care and prevention in Mozambique. This is especially needed for AIDS prevention. The film tries to encourage the recently started dialogue between tradition and modernity.

    Abstract: Schlittschuhlaufen hat in Ostfriesland Tradition: Seit der Urbarmachung der Hochmoore durchziehen Kanäle das Land - wenn sie im Winter zufroren, öffnete sich den einsamen Höfen für eine Weile das Tor zur Welt: “Ich fahr eben mal nach Emden, ´n Glas Senf kaufen”, war eine Redensart der Landbewohner, die sonst das ganze Jahr nicht in die Stadt kamen. Im Film erinnern sie sich an Wasserwüsten, die das Land im Herbst überzogen und im Winter zufroren, an “Schöfelbräute” und an legendäre Wettkämpfe.
    Abstract: Ice skating has a long tradition in East Frisia: the network of canals criss-crossing the countryside dates back to the time when the high-lying moors were first cultivated - when they froze in winter, the gateway to the world was opened for a while to isolated farms: ”I’m just off to Emden to buy a pot of mustard” was a saying of the countryside dwellers, who otherwise never visited the town the whole year round. In the film they recollect the expanses of water that covered the countryside in the autumn and froze in the winter, as well as ”skating brides” and legendary competitions.

    Abstract: Eine Musikgruppe der neuseeländischen Polizei reist nach Samoa, um dort beim jährlichen Teuila-Festival aufzutreten. Ihr Präsident, der Polizeikommissar Tyrone Laurenson, wurde mit samoanischer Abstammung in Auckland geboren und hat Samoa des öfteren bereist. Das Gruppenmitglied Mike Alofa dagegen, der als Sicherheitsoffizier arbeitet und als 8jähriger von Samoa nach Neuseeland kam, fährt nun erstmals nach 20 Jahren wieder in seine Heimat. Am Beispiel dieser beiden Protagonisten und ihrem Alltagsleben sowie ihren Gefühlen für ihre Heimat Samoa beschreibt der Film die doppelte Identität von Migranten, die ihren samoanischen Wurzeln verhaftet bleiben, zugleich aber eine neue, an westlichen Werten orientierte Identität in Neuseeland aufbauen. Die DVD enthält neben dem Film (C 1994) einen Kommentar, ein Gespräch des Filmemachers Rolf Husmann mit dem Hauptprotagonisten Tyrone Laurenson sowie ein 35minütiges Interview der beiden zum Thema Identität und Migration. Beide Gespräche wurden im Juli 2002 aufgezeichnet. Alle Gespräche und Kommentare wurden transkribiert und sind als Textdateien beigefügt.
    Abstract: A Cultural Group of the New Zealand Police travels to Western Samoa to perform at the annual Teuila Festival. Two group members of Samoan origin also return to Samoa on this occasion. While for Auckland-born Tyrone Laurenson, a police officer in Auckland and president of the group, it is just one of his regular visits to Samoa, for Michael Alofa, who came to New Zealand with his parents as an eight-year-old and now works in the security industry, it is the first return after 20 years. By describing the two protagonists' everyday life and work as well as their feelings about the notion of "home", the film exemplifies the split and at the same time double cultural identity of migrants who remain rooted in their Samoan culture, while over the years a new, western-oriented identity in New Zealand emerges. The DVD contains the film (C 1994) as well as the "film makers' commentary", a talk between film maker Rolf Husmann and protagonist Tyrone Laurenson, and a 35-minute-interview of the two. Both talks were recorded in July 2002. All conversations and commentaries were transcribed and are included in text files.

    Abstract: In Spergau, einem Dorf in unmittelbarer Nähe von Halle/Saale, findet alljährlich am Lichtmeßtag (2. Febr.) ein Heischegang der Junggesellen statt, dessen Vorspiel jedoch bereits Monate zuvor beginnt. Der Brauch spielt bei den Beteiligten, darüber hinaus aber im Bewußtsein der Dorföffentlichkeit eine außerordentliche Rolle. Der Film bietet eine ausführliche Dokumentation der Lichtmeß des Jahres 1996, zeigt die wichtigsten Figuren und befragt die Akteure. Ergänzt wird dieses durch kurze Sequenzen historischer Filmaufnahmen von Hans Hahne aus den 1920er Jahren.
    Abstract: At Spergau, a village near Halle/Saale, the bachelors perform an annual gift collection on Candlemas day (Feb. 2nd) whose preparation starts months before. This custom plays an important role not only for the organizers but for the whole village. The film documents the Candlemass of 1996, shows the most important figures and interviews the actors. Additionally, the film offers short sequences of historical footage by Hans Hahne from the 1920s.

    Abstract: Den Ausgangspunkt des Filmes bilden Aufnahmen (8 u. 16 mm) aus den späten 30er Jahren, aufgenommen vom damaligen Pächter des Göttinger Stadtguts in Rosdorf. Mit Hilfe weiterer Filmaufnahmen aus den 50er und 60er Jahren, historischer Fotos sowie aktueller Interviews mit Zeitzeugen beleuchtet der Film den technischen und sozialen Wandel in der Landwirtschaft im 20. Jahrhundert. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf den Entwicklungen nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, dargestellt am Beispiel des Gutes. Zeugenaussagen über die Situation kleinerer und kleinster Höfe des Dorfes runden den Film ab. Als Bonusmaterial enthält die DVD zudem das vollständige 18-minütige Archivfilmmaterial „Erntearbeiten in Rosdorf“ (A 4005) aus den späten 30er Jahren.
    Abstract: Starting point of the film is footage (8 and 16 mm) shot in the late 1930s by the administrator of the Göttingen estate in Rosdorf. By means of footage from the 1950s and 1960s, historical photographs, and present-day interviews with contemporary witnesses the film illustrates the technical and social development in agriculture in the 20th century, with special emphasis on the post-war development. The estate at Rosdorf lies in the focus of the film which is supplemented by statements on the current situation of small and smallest village farms. The DVD contains the complete 18 min archival footage „Harvest Works in Rosdorf“ from the late 1930s as bonus material.

    Abstract: Der Hamat'sa (oder "Kannibalentanz") ist die wichtigste und oft dargestellte Zeremonie der Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl) von British Colombia. Der Film geht der Geschichte der ethnologischen Darstellung des Tanzes und der Rückgabe des Archivmaterials an die Ureinwohner-Gemeinden nach. Er zeigt, welch unterschiedliche Einstellungen zu dieser Geschichte bestehen und wie sie die heutigen Aufführungen bestimmen. Mit Blick auf die eigene Feldforschung thematisiert der Autor Fragen der ethnographischen Repräsentation sowie der Beziehung zwischen Forscher und Forschungssubjekten.
    Abstract: The Hamat'sa (or "Cannibal Dance") is the most important and highly represented ceremony of the Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl) people of British Columbia. This film traces the history of anthropological depictions of the dance and, through the return of archival materials to a Native community, presents some of the ways in which diverse attitudes toward this history inform current presentations of the Hamat'sa. With a secondary focus on the filmmaker's fieldwork experience, the film also attends specifically to the ethics of ethnographic representation and to the renegotiation of relationships between anthropologists and their research subjects.

    Abstract: The filmmaker is touring Burkina Faso and Mali with the three Swiss protagonists of his film "Encounters on the Milky Way" (film C 12442). We see them at the Pan-African film festival in Ouagadougou during the premiere, in between open-air screenings driving through spectacular landscapes on washed-out dirt paths. The highlights of the trip are the screening in the remote village of Baraboulé for Amadou Dicko, the influential "Chef de Canton", and the audience on the following day for "Les Amis d'Amadou".     Abstract: Der Kawah Ijen (Grüner Krater) ist ein aktiver Vulkan auf der Ostseite der Insel Java. Dort liegt auch der größte schwefel- und salzsäurehaltige See der Welt. Seit 1968 arbeiten Bergmänner Tag und Nacht und unter unhaltbaren Bedingungen in dem gefährlichen und giftigen Krater.     Abstract: The Kawah Ijen (green crater) is an active volcano situated on the extreme east side of the island of Java, where the biggest hydrochloric and sulfuric acid lake in the world is located. Since 1968 forced sulfur miners work by day and night, in untenable conditions in a hostile, toxic and harmful crater. Gathering the "yellow gold" these subhumans are paid more than the national average at the price of a life span reduced by the gases they breathe and the weight they carry.

Es folgen Aufnahmen vom Markt in La Paz und aus Yucatan. Ergänzend zu dieser Kurzfassung liegt eine ausführliche Edition des Quellenmaterials vor, die im IWF-Archiv einsehbar ist (Film A 7062).
    Abstract: Reconstruction of Wegner's footage from Bolivia, Peru and Mexico (Yucatan). The footage shows dances of the Sirionos the Mojos performing their Machetero dance. It documents the daily life of the Chimanes, the festivities of the national holiday and the feast of Nuestra Senora de las Nieves in Copacabana. Finally there are scenes from the market of La Paz and the ruins of Yucatan. In addition to this short film there exists an edition of the whole material, which can be viewed in the IWF archive (film A 7062).

    Abstract: Quellenedition der Aufnahmen Wegners aus Bolivien, Peru und Mexiko (Yucatan). Aufnahmen der Sirionos zeigen das Einreiben mit Pflanzenfarbe, Männer- und Frauentanz und ein Pflegekind. Mit Boot und Ochsenkarren geht es weiter zu den Mojos: Aufführung des Macheterotanzes. Die bedeutendsten Aufnahmen entstanden bei den Chimanen und dokumentieren Hüttenbau, Pfeil- und Bogenherstellung, Töpfern, Spinnen, Weben, Rindenbastherstellung, Giftfischen, Feuerquirlen, Maismehlsieben, Essen und Lausen. Es folgen Aufnahmen von verschiedenen Festen (Nationalfeiertag, Marienfest) mit Tanz- und Musikgruppen, vom Markt in La Paz und aus Yucatan. Das bisher unveröffentlichte Ausgangsmaterial (44 Rollen Negativ-Nitro), das im Dresdner Museum für Völkerkunde lagerte, wurde auf Video Beta-SP transferiert, mit Hilfe der Schriften und Fotographien Wegners analysiert und in einer rekonstruierten Zeitenfolge montiert. Die Einstellungen wurden in Originallänge belassen, beschrieben und annotiert. Eine quellenkritische Analyse erfolgte im Rahmen einer Magisterarbeit. Die vorliegende Edition kann im IWF-Archiv eingesehen werden. Eine Kurzfassung der Aufnahmen ist im Vertrieb verfügbar: Film C 7061.

Khalifa Barkat führt ein "akhara" nebenan im Park und setzt dort eine Gruppe junger Männer der moralischen und körperlichen Tortur des Ringens aus. Hunderte von Männern laufen täglich durch den Park und über den Markt. Der Film untersucht die Unsicherheit des Lebens der Arbeiterklasse sowie deren Auswirkung auf die männliche Sexualität und die Beziehung der Geschlechter.
    Abstract: This is a film about performance, and the fear of not being able to perform successfully. In Meena Bazar in old Delhi, the tenuous aspirations of men and boys are reflected in their faces as they cluster around Aslam's street stall to listen to his spiel about how to enhance male sexual performance. Near Aslam’s stalls is a school for wrestlers (akhara), where discipline and abstinence from impure sex are encouraged by the guru. In an adjacent tea shop, men appreciate storytelling that invokes the humorous and the fantastic, offering an escape from the dreariness of their daily lives. All of these men have, in their different ways, found a way to perform life's tasks in an insecure world.

Einige dieser Friedhofsbesucher werden portraitiert, wie sie die Gräber ihrer Verstorbenen liebevoll herrichten, mit ihnen sprechen und ihnen Geschenke bringen.
    Abstract: Cemeteries are not only places for the dead. They are also social spaces where the living interact with each other and with the dead. The film depicts the different ways in which bereaved people remember and commemorate their deceased family members and friends, by visiting and tending their graves at a Victorian cemetery, in London.

    Abstract: Im Jahr 1993 trafen sich in Südäthiopien Vertreter der Arbore, Borana, Konso, Tsamai, Hamar and Dasanech, um Frieden zu schließen. Ethnologen waren zugegen, und der britische Ethnologe Alula Pankhurst filmte die Zusammenkunft. Ein Speer wurde von jeder Gruppe symbolisch stumpf gemacht und zerbrochen, danach wurden Symbole des Friedens an alle Teilnehmer ausgehändigt. Auf Einladung des Ältesten Grazmatch Surra kehrten Ivo Strecker und Jean Lydall 2002 zurück. Grazmatch hatte eine Botschaft für die ganze Welt: Blutvergießen ist eine Schande, für alle Ethnien in Äthiopien wie für die ganze Welt. Es bringt Armut und Krankheit. Solche und weitere Ideen werden von Grazmatch in einer Serie von Gesprächen im Film entwickelt. Sein Sohn Horra erläutert die Ereignisse von 1993, indem er an den ursprünglichen Ort des Geschehens zurückkehrt.
    Abstract: In 1993, in southern Ethiopia, the Arbore, Borana, Konso, Tsamai, Hamar and Dasanech met to make peace. Anthropologists from the South Omo Research Center witnessed the event, and Alula Pankhurst filmed the debates. One spear from each group was brought, placed on the ground, blunted and then broken. After the instruments for war were destroyed, tools of peace were given to all participants. In 2002, anthropologists Ivo Strecker and Jean Lydall returned, following an invitation by Grazmatch Surra. He had a message that he wanted them to bring to the whole world: Bloodshed dishonours not only the people of southern Ethiopia but all people wherever they live on earth, and poverty and sickness ultimately derive from the wilful spilling of human blood. These and similar ideas are developed by Grazmatch Surra in a series of spellbinding conversations. His son, Horra, returns to the sites where the original peace ceremony took place and explains the historic events.

    Abstract: Dieser Studentenfilm beschäftigt sich mit der Darstellung nationaler Minderheiten in der Volksrepublik China und nutzt als Quelle ethnographische Filme, die zwischen 1957 und 1966 entstanden sind. Darin formuliert der Film die Repräsentation, die Manipulation des filmischen Bildes und Tons auf neue Weise für ein vielschichtiges Verständnis der Ethnien in China, der Visualisierung von Wissen und dem Bild der Nation.
    Abstract: This student film aims at re-presenting the presentation of minority nationality groups in the People's Republic of China. The source material is a series of historic ethnographic films dating from 1957-1966. The film reformulates the process of representation, manipulating the film images and sounds in order to produce a multifaceted understanding of ethnicity in China, the visualization of knowledge, and the imagining of a nation.

    Abstract: Das Arbeiterviertel Sunder Nagri, "schöne Stadt", liegt am Rande Neu-Delhis. Die meisten Familien betreiben Handweberei und haben in den letzten zehn Jahren die Folgen der Globalisierung zu spüren bekommen. Der Film portraitiert zwei dieser Familien, die sich dem Wandel stellen müssen und versuchen, im Kampf einen Sinn zu finden in einer Welt, die sie laufend an den Rand der Existenz drängt.
    Abstract: Sunder Nagri (Beautiful City) is a small working class colony on the margins of India's capital city, Delhi. Most families residing here come from a community of weavers. The last ten years have seen a gradual disintegration of the handloom tradition of this community under the globalisation regime. The families have to cope with change as well as reinvent themselves to eke out a living.The City Beautiful is the story of two families struggling to make sense of a world, which keeps pushing them to the margins. Film with English subtitles.

    Abstract: Im November und Dezember 1985 wurden in acht Ayt-Yazza-Dörfern der Ayt-Hdiddu-Berber am Asif-Mllull-Fluß in Südmarokko 101 Bräute von ihren Eltern in tagelang gemeinsam ausgeführten Zeremonien verheiratet. Die Bräutigame spielen dabei eine untergeordnete Rolle. 98% dieser Erstverheirateten werden wieder geschieden. Man sucht sich dann den nächsten Partner selbst und kann künftige Ehen ohne großes Heiratszeremoniell eingehen.
    Abstract: In November and December of 1985 101 brides were married by their parents in collective ceremonies lasting several days taking place in 8 villages of the Ayt-Hdiddu-Berbs at the Asif Mllull river in southern Morocco. The bridegrooms play a less important role. 98% of the first marriages are divorced. The next partner is chosen autonomously and further marriages take place without great ceremonies.
