    Abstract: Fundamentalism, Sectarianism, and Revolution is a major comparative analysis of fundamentalist movements in cultural and political context, with an emphasis on the contemporary scene. Leading sociologist S. N. Eisenstadt examines the meaning of the global rise of fundamentalism as one very forceful contemporary response to tensions in modernity and the dynamics of civilization. He compares modern fundamentalist movements with the proto-fundamentalist movements which arose in the 'axial civilizations' in pre-modern times; he shows how the great revolutions in Europe which arose in connection with these movements shaped the political and cultural programmes of modernity; and he contrasts post-Second World War Moslem, Jewish and Protestant fundamentalist movements with communal national movements, notably in Asia. The central theme of the book is the distinctively Jacobin features of fundamentalist movements and their ambivalent attitude to tradition: above all their attempts to essentialize tradition in an ideologically totalistic way. Eisenstadt has won the Amalfi book prize.

    Abstract: In what is sometimes called the age of absolutism, Castilian nobles and commoners, tribunes and towns, were to a considerable degree able to resist and shape royal commands. Whereas there was little open conflict, there was sometimes a surprising degree of autonomy, rights and reciprocity on the part of the king's vassals. This is a study of one such form of resistance: the opposition to military levies. This opposition took place during a period of crisis, during the 1630s and 1640s, when the Crown's need to raise an army came into conflict with a notion of kingship that was far from absolute. From the king's advisory councils to parliament, from city councils and seigneurial estates, to the most humble villages, Castilians had recourse to a wide range of political and juridictional means with which to dispute the king's claims and avoid conscription.

    Abstract: This book presents a social and cultural history of 'dishonourable people' (unehrliche Leute), an outcast group in early modern Germany. Executioners, skinners, grave-diggers, shepherds, barber-surgeons, millers, linen-weavers, sow-gelders, latrine-cleaners, and bailiffs were among the 'dishonourable' by virtue of their trades. This dishonour was either hereditary, often through several generations, or it arose from ritual pollution whereby honourable citizens could become dishonourable by coming into casual contact with members of the outcast group. The dishonourable milieu of the city of Augsburg from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries is reconstructed to show the extent to which dishonour determined the life-chances and self-identity of dishonourable people. The book then investigates how honourable estates interacted with dishonourable people, and how the pollution anxieties of early modern Germans structured social and political relations within honourable society.

Im Anschluß daran wird Herrschaft als ein sozialer Koordinationsmechanismus behandelt, den Akteure zur Bewältigung von Handlungsproblemen schaffen, dessen Erhalt aber wiederum aus individuellen Handlungsentscheidungen abzuleiten ist. Zur Weiterführung der aufgewiesenen Traditionslinie wird dafür plädiert, sowohl die Entstehungs- wie auch die Bestandsbedingungen einer herrschaftlichen Handlungskoordination zum Gegenstand theoretischer Überlegungen und empirischer Forschungen zu machen

    Note: Obgleich sich Kommunikationswissenschaftler seit langem mit den Prozessen der individuellen Rezeption beschäftigen, sind theoretische Ansätze, die sich diesem Themenkomplex widmen, vergleichsweise selten zu finden. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird im zweiten Teil dieser Arbeit versucht, im Anschluß an konstruktivistische Überlegungen eine alternative Konzeption zur individuellen Rezeption zu entwickeln. Dabei liegt besonderes Augenmerk auf der Einbettung dieser Alternative in bestehende kommunikationswissenschaftliche Forschungszusammenhänge

    Note: Laut einem Aphorismus von Gabriel Laub ist "Bücherschreiben . . . das einzige Verbrechen, bei dem der Täter sich bemüht, Spuren zu hinterlassen". Dies gilt zumindest für den älteren unter den beiden Autoren nicht, er hat genügend Fährten gelegt. In den letzten fünfundzwanzig Jahren hat er versucht, die Publikationen zur Sozialarbeit/Sozialpädagogik kritisch mitzulesen. In drei Semestern der neunziger Jahre haben beide Autoren in gemeinsamen Seminaren an der Westfälischen Wilhelms­ Universität Münster einschlägige Themen dazu mit Studenten bearbeitet. Nicht nur zu beobachten, wie andere vor uns den anstehenden Topos beobachtet haben, sondern auch, wie selektiv er fokussiert wird, war für uns aufschlußreich. Als eines unserer Ergebnisse stellten wir in allen behandelten Publikationen das Fehlen eines stringenten gesellschaftstheoretischen Bezuges fest, der selbstverständlich nicht als "Evangelium" verstanden werden sollte. In unserem Versuch greifen wir auf das Instrumentarium der funktional-strukturellen Systemtheorie Niklas Luhmanns zurück. Wie in allen wissenschaftlichen Diskursen so bleibt auch hier alles im Vorvorletzten. Wie könnte man auch das, was sich als ein möglicher Diskussionsbeitrag versteht, anders einordnen? Kennern der Materie wird bald auffallen, daß einige gute Veröffentlichungen zum behandelten Problem in unserem Literaturverzeichnis fehlen. Der Grund ist einfach: Wir wollten etwas überblicken und mußten deshalb manches übersehen. Kundige Leser bitten wir an diesem Punkt um Nachsicht. Soll der Duktus nicht verloren gehen, darf man in einem ersten Zugriff auf die Problematik keine Fußnotenorgien zelebrieren. Deshalb haben wir uns auf das Nötigste beschränkt

    Note: "Wie aufregend Ihre Erfahrungen bei der Datenerhebung auch sein mögen, es kommt der Tag, an dem die Daten analysiert werden müssen. " Als der Sozialwissenschaftler Anselm Strauss diesen Satz in der Zeit seiner aktiven Forschungsarbeit formulierte, ist ihm vermutlich die Frage noch nicht in den Sinn gekommen, ob und inwieweit Computersoftware geeignet ist, die Analyse von Texten und qualitativen Daten in der Sozialforschung zu unterstützen. In den Sozialwissenschaften fand die Frage einer Methodik zur Auswertung von qualitativen Daten ohnehin lange Zeit nur wenig Beachtung. Man interessierte sich vor allem für die Datenerhebung und für die Probleme der Feldarbeit. Die dominanten Fragen lauteten etwa: Wie gestaltet man die Interviewsituation? Wie lockt man Erzählungen hervor? Wie vermeidet man es, als teilnehmender Beobachter zu sehr zum Teil des untersuchten Feldes zu werden - "going native" nannten die Ethnologen dieses Phänomen. Dieses Buch setzt einen anderen Schwerpunkt: Die Probleme der Datenerhebung werden ebenso außer Acht gelassen wie die wissenschaftstheoretischen Auseinandersetzungen über Art und Status der zu wählenden Forschungsmethode. Dieser Text beginnt mit dem Tag der Datenbearbeitung und -analyse. Gegenstand sind die neuen, computergestützten Techniken des Datenmanagements und der Datenauswertung, die im letzten Jahrzehnt entwickelt worden sind. Für diese EDV -Programme zur computergestützten Analyse qualitativer Daten hat sich im englischen Sprachgebrauch die Bezeichnung "QDA-Software" bzw. "CAQDAS" durchgesetzt. Außerdem ergibt sich aus der durchgeführten Zeitreihenanalyse der Annoncen (1981 bis 1994) eine nahezu wirklichkeitsgetreue Abbildung der Inserenten, ihrer Einkommen, Hobbies und Berufe, ihres Alters und Gewichts und vieler anderer Eigenschaften. Die wissenschaftliche Auswertung dokumentiert einen interessanten Werte- und Einstellungswandel in den vergangenen Jahren

    Abstract: Die Ergebnisse der qualitativen Längsschnittstudie mit jungen Frauen relativieren und erweitern das Konzept des doppelten weiblichen Lebensentwurfs zwischen Beruf und Kind. Welche Vorstellungen haben junge Frauen heute für ihr Leben und wie setzen sie sie um? Diese Fragestellung stand im Zentrum einer qualitativen Längsschnittuntersuchung mit 125 jungen Frauen und ihren Partnern, die zwischen 1991 und 1997 in Bayern und Sachsen durchgeführt wurde: Der Beruf ist für junge Frauen mittlerweile eine Selbstverständlichkeit. Viele möchten Beruf und Kinder vereinbaren, doch immer mehr junge Frauen entwickeln Vorstellungen, die weit über die vielbeschriebene Doppelorientierung hinausgehen: Sie suchen eigene Wege, möchten ohne Kinder mit einem Partner leben oder experimentieren mit Optionen, die sie als junge Frauen in der individualisierten Gesellschaft haben. Für die Umsetzung ihrer Lebensentwürfe sind regionale Gelegenheitsstrukturen und individuelle Ressourcen von großer Bedeutung

    Abstract: This book offers a sustained re-evaluation of the most central and perplexing themes of Leibniz's metaphysics. In contrast to traditional assessments that view the metaphysics in terms of its place among post-Cartesian theories of the world, Jan Cover and John O'Leary-Hawthorne examine the question of how the scholastic themes which were Leibniz's inheritance figure - and are refigured - in his mature account of substance and individuation. From this emerges a sometimes surprising assessment of Leibniz's views on modality, the Identity of Indiscernibles, form as an internal law, and the complete-concept doctrine. Die kulturpessimistische Position dagegen sieht Tendenzen zur Singularisierung; man befürchtet die Auflösung sozialer Strukturen und sprachlich-kommunikativen Verfall. Die Beiträge geben einen Überblick über linguistische, soziologische und psychologische Perspektiven zu dieser Diskussion und fokussieren solche sprachlichen Verfahren, mit deren Hilfe sowohl dialogische Beziehungen als auch Gruppenmitgliedschaften im Netz gestaltet werden. In dieser Arbeit wird ein Vergleichsansatz vorgestellt, der ein methodisch-distanziertes Vergleichen ermöglichen soll. Zur Erprobung dieses Ansatzes werden soziologische Grundlagenkonzepte von Max Weber und von Niklas Luhmann verglichen. Vor allem im Ausgang von den Konzepten "soziale Beziehungen / gegenseitiges soziales Handeln" (Weber) und "soziales System / Kommunikation "Luhmann) werden die Begriffe beider relationiert. Die Arbeit gelangt zu dem Ergebnis, daß hinsichtlich Webers Konzeption Ergänzungs- und Erweiterungsbedarf besteht, während die von Luhmann vor allem in den Grundlagen zu korrigieren ist

The Berlin Aging Study is one of the largest interdisciplinary efforts to explore old age and aging. Unique aspects of the Berlin Aging Study are the spectrum of scientific disciplines involved, the range of discipline-specific and interdisciplinary research topics, the focus on very old age (70 to over 100 years), and the empirical reference to a representative heterogenous urban population. The study's first cross-sectional findings on intellectual abilities, self and personality, social relationships, physical health, functional capacity, medical treatment, mental disorders such as depression and dementia, socioeconomic conditions, activities, everyday competence, subjective well-being, and gender differences are reported in depth in this book. The study was carried out in the context of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences study group on 'Aging and Social Development'. The authors primarily conduct their research at the Berlin Max Planck Institute for Human Development, the Free University of Berlin, and the Humboldt University, Berlin.

She looks at how Elizabeth managed to be queen, in the face of considerable male opposition, and demonstrates how that opposition was enacted.     Abstract: As a conquest dynasty, Qing China's new Manchu leaders desperately needed to legitimize their rule. To win the approval of China's native elites, they developed an ambitious plan to return Confucianism to civil society. Filial piety, the core Confucian value, would once again be upheld by the state, and laborious and time-consuming mourning rituals, the touchstones of a well-ordered Confucian society, would be observed by officials throughout the empire. In this way, the emperor would be following the ancient dictate that he 'govern all-under-heaven with filial piety'. Norman Kutcher's study of mourning looks beneath the rhetoric to demonstrate how the state - unwilling to make the sacrifices that a genuine commitment to proper mourning demanded - quietly but forcefully undermined, not reinvigorated, the Confucian mourning system. With acute sensitivity to language and its changing meanings, Kutcher sheds light on a wide variety of issues that are of interest to historians of late Imperial China.

    Abstract: Structural transformations in the international economy and the restructuring of work have made the transition from education to employment increasingly problematic. School-to-work pathways have become more socially segmented and the risk of under-employment and joblessness has increased for both vocationally and academically educated youth. Continuous passages have become less common and have given way to multiple entries and exits between schooling and working, under-employment, unemployment and domestic work. This edited volume of empirical studies is based on a series of comparable longitudinal research projects which draw on survey and biographical data from important players in the international economy, the USA, Great Britain, Canada and Germany. The studies document that social and gender inequality is a persistent structural feature that restricts the possibilities to take advantage of educational opportunities and career options. Furthermore, different institutional arrangements are shown to play a crucial role in distributing transition opportunities in a more equal way.

    Abstract: This 2000 book examines the demographic and economic history of slavery in Minas Gerais, the single largest slave-holding region in Brazil, from its settlement in the early eighteenth century until the abolition of Brazilian slavery in 1888. It utilizes the largest database ever assembled on a slave population in the Americas to reconstruct and analyse the unique history of slave labour in Minas Gerais. This slave population was remarkable in its ability to diversify economically as well as in increasing through natural reproduction, rather than through importation via the trans-atlantic slave trade. Minas Gerais therefore invites comparison with the patterns of slave reproduction found in the United States' South, heretofore considered unique. Extensively researched and finely documented, this book places the history of a unique Brazilian slave community into comparative perspective.

    Abstract: This important 1999 volume examines the effects of the mother's employment on family life and children's well-being. It starts with a thorough review of previous research on this topic and then reports the results of a study designed to answer the key questions that emerge. The study focuses on 448 families, with an elementary school child, living in an industrialized city in the Midwest. They include both one-parent and two-parent families, African Americans and Whites, and a broad range of economic circumstances. Extensive data have been obtained from mothers, fathers, children, teachers, classroom peers, and school records. The analysis reported reveals how the mother's employment status affects the father's role, the mother's sense of well-being, and childrearing patterns and how these, in turn, affect the child. The book provides an intimate picture of urban life and how families cope with mothers' employment.

    Abstract: Fundamentalism, Sectarianism, and Revolution is a major comparative analysis of fundamentalist movements in cultural and political context, with an emphasis on the contemporary scene. Leading sociologist S. N. Eisenstadt examines the meaning of the global rise of fundamentalism as one very forceful contemporary response to tensions in modernity and the dynamics of civilization. He compares modern fundamentalist movements with the proto-fundamentalist movements which arose in the 'axial civilizations' in pre-modern times; he shows how the great revolutions in Europe which arose in connection with these movements shaped the political and cultural programmes of modernity; and he contrasts post-Second World War Moslem, Jewish and Protestant fundamentalist movements with communal national movements, notably in Asia. The central theme of the book is the distinctively Jacobin features of fundamentalist movements and their ambivalent attitude to tradition: above all their attempts to essentialize tradition in an ideologically totalistic way. Eisenstadt has won the Amalfi book prize.

The Berlin Aging Study is one of the largest interdisciplinary efforts to explore old age and aging.     Abstract: As a conquest dynasty, Qing China's new Manchu leaders desperately needed to legitimize their rule. To win the approval of China's native elites, they developed an ambitious plan to return Confucianism to civil society. Filial piety, the core Confucian value, would once again be upheld by the state, and laborious and time-consuming mourning rituals, the touchstones of a well-ordered Confucian society, would be observed by officials throughout the empire. In this way, the emperor would be following the ancient dictate that he 'govern all-under-heaven with filial piety'.
