    Abstract: Musik und Migration bedingen einander substanziell.     Abstract: Anfang der 1920er Jahre erreichte Jazzmusik Europa und verbreitete sich innerhalb kürzester Zeit durch Hörensagen, amerikanische Musikerinnen und Musiker und später auch Schallplatten in Deutschland. Die Musik wirbelte das kulturelle Leben und seine Diskurse in einem Maße auf, dass die kulturelle Elite um den Fortbestand der europäischen musikalischen Traditionen bangte: Jazz wurde einerseits vehement abgelehnt und andererseits euphorisch begrüßt und als Ausdruck von Freiheit verstanden.Dieser "Jazzaufprall" in den Jahren zwischen 1924 und 1929 wird in der Studie anhand von zeitgenössischen Betrachtungen beleuchtet: Was passierte mit den unterschiedlichen Dimensionen des Stadtlebens? Wie wurden die fremde Kultur und die Musik in die bestehenden kulturellen Szenen eingeordnet? Und inwiefern konstruierten sich in Berlin durch diesen internationalen Einfluss neue Facetten einer urbanen Identität?

Hierfür sind Interviews und Gespräche mit über 20 Akteur:innen geführt worden, die zwischen 1940 und 1970 geboren sind.Der Autor verfolgt das Ziel, den Westberliner Akteur:innen eine Stimme in der gesamtdeutschen Hip-Hop-Geschichte zu geben, denn bis dato findet die Historie Westberlins wenig bis gar keinen Eingang in etablierte Narrative. Es wird veranschaulicht, dass die Historiographie des Hip-Hops in Deutschland nicht erst in den 1990er Jahren mit Advanced Chemistry, den Fantastischen Vier oder LSD beginnt, sondern auch die Westberliner Hip-Hop-Kultur der 1980er Jahre in Betracht gezogen werden muss.

    Abstract: "It is 1969 and Joni Mitchell is on television, standing empty-handed in the middle of a circular stage that is adorned with psychedelic colors. She is wearing a long, hunter-green dress, surrounded by an audience sitting cross-legged on the floor. She waits for television host Dick Cavett to introduce her next performance. The show is filming on the day after the 1969 Woodstock music festival, an event that Mitchell was initially scheduled to attend but from which she was held back by her management to ensure she could perform on The Dick Cavett Show the next day. The host introduces Mitchell and jokes with her about singing a capella, wondering aloud if someone stole her guitar. The singer laughs politely in response, denies any theft, and then proceeds to her performance, explaining to the audience that she will be singing a "song for America" that she wrote "as a Canadian living in this country." With her hands clasped behind her back, she performs "The Fiddle and the Drum" with no accompaniment, channeling the folk performance tradition on which the song is based. This song about military participation is a rare political statement from Mitchell who, unlike her peers Bob Dylan and Buffy Sainte-Marie, had only released this one "protest song" by 1969. But the song's message was not a particularly risky proclamation. Her anti-war narrative echoed the opinions of the young Cavett Show audience that night, aligning with an established trend of resistance against the war in Vietnam. Similar to the way that Mitchell's song "Woodstock" would eventually capture the spirit of an event she did not attend, "The Fiddle and the Drum" characterizes a popular anti-war sentiment in the public consciousness of the late 1960s"--

    Abstract: "Citizenship is a fantasy of political community without others. How is it faring in today's world of authoritarianism, failed states, and climate crisis? In a world where democratic experiment is, by now, a networked and global proposition? What might we learn from music - and from ethnomusicology? The relationship between the idea of citizenship and music is long-standing, but it has not yet been looked at from a perspective informed by postcolonialism and today's decolonizing debates. The case studies in this volume are, consequently, drawn from across Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe. Its first chapter locates the current ethnomusicological interest in citizenship in broad critical landscape, focusing on approaches to audience, media, voice and performance. The second surveys a growing body of recent ethnomusicological literature on citizenship, theorized in terms of identity, technocracy, and intimacy. The third comprises case studies developing an approach to citizenship and political subjectivity beyond conventional liberal categories, defined by mobility ('the citizen on his bike'), collectivity ('the citizen in the crowd') and activism ('the citizen in the square'). The conclusion offers an argument about the implications for citizenship studies of today's thinking in ethnomusicology, musicology and sound studies, reflecting on the hardening rhetoric of political belonging in Europe."

How do particular traits become inscribed with whiteness, and further, how do those traits, now racialized in a listener's mind, filter the sounds a listener hears? To what extent was Brubeck's whiteness made by others? How did audiences and critics use Brubeck to craft their own identities centered in whiteness? Drawing on archival records, recordings, and previously conducted interviews, Dave Brubeck and the Performance of Whiteness listens closely for the complex and shifting frames of mid-century whiteness, and how they shaped the experiences of Brubeck, his critics, and his audiences. Throughout, author Kelsey Klotz asks what happens when a musician tries to intervene, using his white privilege as a tool with which to disrupt structures of white supremacy, even as whiteness continues to retain its hold on its beneficiaries"--

    Abstract: Zu Beginn der 1980er Jahre entsteht innerhalb der Hip-Hop-Kultur in den USA das Beatmaking – eine Musikpraxis, die auf dem kreativen Umgang mit bereits vorhandenem Klangmaterial basiert und hauptsächlich in informellen Kontexten ausgeübt wird. In den letzten 40 Jahren hat sich das Beatmaking in enger Verbindung mit musik- und medientechnologischen Entwicklungen global verbreitet und vielfältig ausdifferenziert. Dabei hat es vor allem im Bereich der populären Musik in musikalisch-ästhetischer und technisch-praktischer Hinsicht maßgebende Impulse gesetzt.In seiner qualitativ-empirischen Studie geht Chris Kattenbeck der Frage nach, was es bedeutet, als Beatmaker*in künstlerisch kompetent zu handeln, welche Fertigkeiten und Kenntnisse dafür nötig sind und wie diese erworben und entwickelt werden. Damit liefert er grundlegende Erkenntnisse über eine bislang kaum erforschte Musikpraxis und die mit ihr verbundenen künstlerischen Strategien und Techniken, ästhetischen Ziele und Vorstellungen, Wissensformen und Lernpraktiken. Dabei zeigt sich unter anderem, dass bestimmte in der Musikpädagogik vorherrschende Verständnisse – etwa von Musiklernen oder Musiktheorie – ungeeignet sind, das Beatmaking adäquat zu erfassen. Die Studie bietet daher nicht zuletzt Anlass, diese Verständnisse zu hinterfragen und neu zu konzeptualisieren, um mit der Vielfalt musikalischer Praxen in Zukunft angemessen umgehen zu können.

    Abstract: Die Individualpsychologie Alfred Adlers ist eine der drei klassischen tiefenpsychologischen Schulen. Im Zentrum ihrer Theorie stehen Fragen des Selbstwertes, indem die Aufmerksamkeit auf das Minderwertigkeitsgefühl als Grundbefindlichkeit der kindlichen Seele gelenkt wird, das durch das Streben nach sozialer Gleichwertigkeit, nach Geltung und Macht kompensiert wird. Dabei stellt Adlers Theorie eine bemerkenswerte Mischung aus egalitär-aufklärerischem und psychoanalytischem Denken dar und ist im Gegensatz zu den Lehren Sigmund Freuds und Carl Gustav Jungs eher konstruktivistisch orientiert. Dennoch wurde der Individualpsychologie bisher vonseiten der Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften nur wenig Aufmerksamkeit zuteil. Der vorliegende Sammelband möchte daher den potentiellen Ertrag der Adler'schen Lehre sowohl für die Erzählforschung als auch für die Literaturwissenschaft deutlich machen und darlegen, dass sie durch das Einbringen einer zusätzlichen Perspektive eine Bereicherung für die Textinterpretation darstellt, der bisher zu wenig Beachtung zuteilwurde

But despite the familiarity of this tune, few of us realize that what we're singing is actually part of a pervasive - and centuries-old - musical scheme. This particular scheme, dubbed the 'Sweet Thing,' has generated a large group of songs spanning a broad range of topics, genres, and time periods, but all related through a specific stanzaic form. Author Nicholas Stoia offers the most comprehensive examination to date of the 'Sweet Thing's' long history, exploring how it made its way from sixteenth-century Scotland to eighteenth-century British broadside ballads to nineteenth-century American ragtime.     Abstract: Music has the universal power to move individuals, peoples and societies. Music is one of the most important signifiers of cultural change. It is also most significant for youth movements and youth cultures. While Islam has a historically and traditionally rich culture of music, religious controversy on the topic of music is still ongoing. However, young Muslims in today’s globalised world seek pop cultural tools such as music, and particularly hip hop music, as way of exploring and expressing their manifold identities, whilst challenging Islamophobia, stigma and racism on the one hand and traditional and religious challenges on the other hand. In this volume, following an international conference with the same title, scholars and young academics from a variety of disciplines seek to explore and highlight the phenomena surrounding the two, somewhat artificially separated, realms of music and religion. The contributions not only look into different genres of music, from Tunisian metal over German female hip hop to Egyptian folk, but take the reader on a journey from continent to countries to cities and rural areas and thus give space and time to a widely neglected area of research: that of Muslim popular culture and young Muslims.

Author Tina Frühauf provides a kaleidoscopic panorama ofmusical practices in worship and social life across the country to illuminate how music contributed to transitions and transformations within and beyond Jewish communities in the aftermath of the Holocaust.Drawing on newly unearthed sources from archives and private collections, this book covers a wide spectrum of musical activity-from its role in commemorations and community events to synagogue concerts and its presence on the radio-across the divided Germany until the Fall of the Wall in 1989. Frühauf's use of mobility as a conceptual framework reveals the myriad ways in which the reemergence of Jewish music in Germany was shaped by cultural transfer and exchange that often relied on thecirculation of musicians, their ideas, and practices within and between communities. By illuminating the centrality of mobility to Jewish experiences and highlighting how postwar Jewish musical practices in Germany were defined by politics that reached across national borders to the United States andIsrael, this pioneering study makes a major contribution to our understanding of Jewish life and culture in a transnational context

    Abstract: Sound Relations: Native Ways of Doing Music History in Alaska delves into histories of Inuit musical life in Alaska to amplify the broader significance of sound as integral to self-determination and sovereignty. The book offers radical and relational ways of listening to Inuit music across a range of genres-from hip hop to Christian hymnody and drumsongs to funk and R&B - to register how a density (not difference) of Indigenous ways of musicking from a vast archive of presence sounds out radical and relational entanglements between structures of Indigeneity and colonialism. The research aims to dismantle stereotypical understandings of "Eskimos," "Indians," and "Natives" by addressing the following questions: What exactly is "Native" about Native music? What does it mean to sound (or not sound) Native? Who decides? And how can in-depth analyses of Native music that center Indigeneity reframe larger debates of race, power, and representation in twenty-first century American music historiography? Instead of proposing singular truths or facts, this book invites readers to consider the existence of multiple simultaneous truths, a density of truths, all of which are culturally constructed, performed, and in some cases politicized and policed. A sound relations approach endeavors to advance a more Indigenized music studies and a more sounded Indigenous studies that works to move beyond colonial questions of containment - "who counts as Indigenous" and "who decides" - and measurement - "how much Indigenous is this person/performance" - and toward an aesthetics of self-determination and resurgent world-making.

    Abstract: "Brithop investigates rap music's politics in the 21st century United Kingdom. In what follows, I argue that this music is partly an extension of, or often a counter to, political discourses happening in other realms of British society. These rappers are essentially "talking back" (hooks 1989, see also Hutton and Burns 2020) to mainstream Britain's political discourses, as "an act of resistance, a political gesture that challenges politics of domination that would render us nameless and voiceless." Through themes of nationalism, history, subculture, politics, humor and identity, this book looks at multiple forms of politics in rap discourses from Wales, Scotland and England. It covers selected hip-hop scenes from 2002-2017, featuring rappers and groups such as The Streets, Goldie Lookin Chain, Akala, Lowkey, Stanley Odd, Loki, Speech Debelle, Lady Sovereign, Shadia Mansour, Shay D, Stormzy, Sleaford Mods, Riz MC and Lethal Bizzle. What follows investigates how rappers in the UK respond to the "postcolonial melancholia" (Gilroy) of post-Empire Britain.     Abstract: Auch in der DDR formierte sich zu Beginn der 1980er-Jahre eine Punkszene, die zwar klein, jedoch weder zu übersehen noch zu überhören war. Exponierte Vertreter und Bands dieser Szene wurden von der Mehrheitsgesellschaft abgelehnt, aus dem staatlich organisierten Kulturbetrieb ausgegrenzt und durch den Sicherheitsapparat kriminalisiert. Doch im Gegensatz zu diesen Repressionen gegen die Punkkultur in der ersten Hälfte der 1980er-Jahre vermittelt die zweite Hälfte der Dekade ein anderes Bild: Ehemals verfemte Musiker waren nun im Staatsfunk zu hören, wurden von der Freien Deutschen Jugend (FDJ) gefördert und unter dem Rubrum ›die anderen Bands‹ auf Schallplatte gehandelt. Die Analyse dieses Wandels im zeithistorischen Kontext ist Gegenstand dieses Buches.

    Abstract: "Brithop investigates rap music's politics in the 21st century United Kingdom. In what follows, I argue that this music is partly an extension of, or often a counter to, political discourses happening in other realms of British society. These rappers are essentially "talking back" (hooks 1989, see also Hutton and Burns 2020) to mainstream Britain's political discourses, as "an act of resistance, a political gesture that challenges politics of domination that would render us nameless and voiceless." (hooks 1989: 8) The rappers in this book critique the UK's more conservative narratives, and they express their relationship to Britain in the politically turbulent climate of the new century, providing valuable perspectives which can go unnoticed by those skeptical of or ignorant of hip-hop culture. Through themes of nationalism, history, subculture, politics, humor and identity, this book looks at multiple forms of politics in rap discourses from Wales, Scotland and England. It covers selected hip-hop scenes from 2002-2017, featuring rappers and groups such as The Streets, Goldie Lookin Chain, Akala, Lowkey, Stanley Odd, Loki, Speech Debelle, Lady Sovereign, Shadia Mansour, Shay D, Stormzy, Sleaford Mods, Riz MC and Lethal Bizzle. What follows investigates how rappers in the UK respond to the "postcolonial melancholia" (Gilroy) of post-Empire Britain. In contrast to more visible narratives of national identity in Britain, Brithop tells a different, arguably more important, story"

    Abstract: ""African American gospel singer Mahalia Jackson was just sixty years old when her heart finally gave out on January 27, 1972, as she lay alone in her sick bed at Little Company of Mary Hospital just south of Chicago. Obituaries faithfully recounted the best-known story lines of her unlikely career: how the power of her voice was rooted in her devout Baptist upbringing; her birth in 1911 and rise from dire poverty in Uptown New Orleans to international celebrity; a dedication to the black freedom struggle that further elevated her to the status of cultural and political symbol. Together, Jackson's voice, faith, prestige, and activism, made her at the time of her death, in the assessment of her friend Harry Belafonte, "the single most powerful black woman in the United States." Yet her reputation is also complex. Invoking the charisma of Martin and Malcolm, the persuasion of statesmen and despots, and the splendor of divas and diadems, Maceo Bowie's letter to the editor of the Chicago Defender seems to both celebrate and grapple with the substance of Jackson dynamism as a gospel singer and her consequence as an illustrious black public figure. In an editorial in the Defender following Jackson's death, E. Duke McNeil acknowledged Jackson's habitual acclaim as the "Queen of the gospel singers," while also observing: "You can almost say that Mahalia was the 'greatest' because she was the only gospel singer known everywhere." Indeed, for scholars of black gospel, the music itself is often hidden in plain sight. On the one hand, gospel voices are inescapable, audible not just within the music industry, where they have become a lingua franca for pop singers, but also in recurring representations of the black church, in the omnipresent sound of the black gospel choir, and in the personal histories of many black artists. On the other, in comparison with such genres as jazz, blues, country music, and hip hop, documentation of black gospel music, which has thrived in in-group settings, is relatively scant, leaving researchers with limited sources and largely reliant on oral history. Fortunately, the scope and coverage of Jackson's caereer produced a paper trail that enables us to study her personal and professional life while gaining insight into the black gospel field of which she was such an integral part. Die quantitative Studie fokussiert die Hip-Hop-Kultur als Thema im Musikunterricht der Sekundarstufe I in Baden-Württemberg aus der Perspektive von Schüler*innen und Lehrenden unterschiedlicher Schulformen. Sie nimmt dabei Bezug auf das Interesse an und die Beschäftigung mit der Jugendkultur wie auch auf die persönliche Bedeutsamkeit von Hip-Hop. Außerdem stellt die Dissertation die Frage nach dem Bildungspotenzial der Jugendkultur. Eine detaillierte Betrachtung szenerelevanter Praxen im Hip-Hop setzt die hierfür benötigten Skills sowie zugrunde liegende Haltungen und Werte in Beziehung zu musikpädagogischen Dimensionen von Bildungsrelevanz. Betrachtet werden in diesem Zusammenhang Anschlussfähigkeiten und Schnittstellen zu Aspekten der Kompetenzorientierung, der ästhetischen Erfahrung sowie zum Ziel der kulturellen Teilhabe. They claimed it as a marker of black Atlantic connections and of cosmopolitanism untethered from European colonial relations. Today, Cuban/African bands popular in Africa in the 1960s and '70s have moved into the world music scene in Europe and North America, and world music producers and musicians have created new West African-Latin American collaborations expressly for this market niche. This book follows two of these bands, Orchestra Baobab and AfroCubism, and the industry and audiences that surround them-from musicians' homes in West Africa, to performances in Europe and North America, to record label offices in London. This book examines the intensely transnational experiences of musicians, industry personnel, and audiences as they collaboratively produce, circulate, and consume music in a specific post-colonial era of globalization. Musicians, industry personnel, and audiences work with and push against one another as they engage in personal collaborations imbued with histories of global travel and trade. They move between and combine Cuban and Malian melodies, Norwegian and Senegalese markets, and histories of slavery and independence as they work together to create international commodities. Understanding the unstable and dynamic ways these peoples, musics, markets, and histories intersect elucidates how world music actors assert their places within, and produce knowledge about, global markets, colonial histories, and the black Atlantic.     Abstract: "Singing Voice presents a conceptual model for analyzing vocal delivery in popular song recordings focused on three overlapping areas of inquiry: pitch, prosody, and quality. The domain of pitch, which refers to listeners' perceptions of frequency, considers range, tessitura, intonation, and registration. Prosody, the pacing and flow of delivery, comprises phrasing, metric placement, motility, embellishment, and consonantal articulation. Qualitative elements include timbre, phonation, onset, resonance, clarity, paralinguistic effects, and loudness. Intersecting all three domains is the area of technological mediation, which considers how external technologies, such as layering, overdubbing, pitch modification, recording transmission, compression, reverb, spatial placement, delay, and other electronic effects, impact voice in recorded music. Though the book focuses primarily on the sonic and material aspects of vocal delivery, it situates these aspects among broader cultural, philosophical, and anthropological approaches to voice with the goal to better understand the relationship between sonic content and its signification. In a riveting and provocative account, Assaf Shelleg explores the theological grammar of Zionism and its impact on the art music written by emigrant and native composers grappling with biblical redemptive promises and diasporic patrimonies. Unveiling the network that bred territorial nationalism and Hebrew culture, Shelleg shows how this mechanism infiltrated composers' work as much as it triggered less desirable responses from composers who sought to realize to the non-territorial Diasporic options Zionism has renounced. In the process compositional aesthetics gets stained by the state's nationalization of the theological, by diasporism that refuses redemption, and by Jewish musical traditions that permeated inaudibly to compositions written throughout the second half of the twentieth century. Accompanying this rich and dramatic story are equivalent developments in modern Hebrew literature and poetry alongside vast and previously unstudied archival sources.     Abstract: Charlie Parker, Composer is the first assessment of a major jazz composer's oeuvre in its entirety. Providing analytical discussion of each of Parker's works, this study combines music-theoretical, historical, and philosophical perspectives. A variety of analytical techniques are brought to bear on Parker's compositions, including application of a revised Schenkerian approach to the music that was developed through the author's prior publications. After a review of Parker's life emphasizing his musical training and involvement in composition, the book proceeds by considering the types of Parker pieces as categorized by overall form and harmony and the amount of preplanned music they contain.

    Abstract: Rhythm is often regarded as one of the most problematic and least understood aspects of music. Restricted to those attributes that are susceptible to calibration and measurement, rhythm is usually identified with meter, durational pattern, or durational proportion. But how shall one account for those attributes of rhythm that point to the particularity and spontaneity of aesthetic experience as it is happening? Drawing on insights from the modern "process" philosophy of Henri Bergson, William James, and A. N. Whitehead, this book releases meter from its mechanistic connotations and recognizes it as a concrete, visceral agent of musical expression. It reinterprets oppositions of law and freedom, structure and process, determinacy and indeterminacy to form a theory that engages diverse repertories and aesthetic issues. Ultimately, this revised 20th anniversary edition of Christopher Hasty's Meter as Rhythm facilitates the work's current contexts of application.

    Abstract: This book offers an interpretation of the two fragmentary texts of the P. Vindobonensis G 40822, now widely referred to as the Muziris papyrus. Without these two texts, there would be no knowledge of the Indo-Roman trade practices. The book also compares and contrasts the texts of the Muziris papyrus with other documents pertinent to Indo-Mediterranean (or Indo-European) trade in ancient, medieval, and early modern times. These other documents reveal the commercial and political geography of ancient South India; the sailing schedule and the size of the ships plying the South India sea route; the commodities exchanged in the South Indian emporia; and the taxes imposed on the Indian commodities en route from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean.

Für die Ausstellung Ludwig lebt! im rock’n’popmuseum Gronau hat dieser Katalog daher die Herausforderung angenommen, zum Jubiläumsjahr 2020 einen ersten Überblick zu geben und mit einer starken Thesenbildung das Forschungsfeld zu vermessen.
