    Abstract: Die Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (MPG), eine der erfolgreichsten Forschungsinstitutionen weltweit, steht exemplarisch für das stark von Hierarchien und Abhängigkeitsverhältnissen geprägte deutsche Wissenschaftssystem. Die Studie analysiert ihren soziokulturellen und strukturellen Wandlungsprozess unter Genderaspekten in den ersten fünfzig Jahren ihres Bestehens – von intransparenten Wirkungszusammenhängen informeller Netzwerke hin zu einer modernen, an Gleichstellungspolitik orientierten Forschungsinstitution. Dabei werden zwei weibliche Arbeitswelten in der Forschungsgesellschaft kultur- und wissenschaftshistorisch untersucht: die Wissenschaft, zu der lange Zeit nur sehr wenige Frauen Zugang hatten, und das "Vorzimmer", in dem die meisten Frauen gearbeitet haben. Was hat weibliche Wissenschaftskarrieren in der MPG befördert, was behindert und welche Rolle spielte dabei das "Harnack-Prinzip", das MPG-eigene Strukturprinzip der persönlichkeitszentrierten Forschungsorganisation? Ein weiterer Fokus liegt auf den gleichstellungspolitischen Aushandlungsprozessen, die Ende der 1980er begannen und dazu beigetragen haben, die tradierte Geschlechterordnung der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft aufzubrechen und dort einen Kulturwandel herbeizuführen.

    Abstract: Exodus 1-2 erzählt von der Unterdrückung der Hebräer in Ägypten und der Geburt der künftigen Retters Mose. Christliche und jüdische Ausleger in der Spätantike interpretierten diesen Text aus ihrer je spezifischen Perspektive, als Teil ihrer religiösen Gemeinschaft. Sie gehen mit teils gemeinsamen, teils unterschiedlichen Voraussetzungen, Hermeneutiken und Methoden an der Text heran. Im Hintergrund stehen immer die religiöse Praxis und Lehre der eigenen religiösen Gemeinschaft. Dabei zeigen sich Prozesse der Rezeption ebenso wie Ablehnung und Abgrenzung. Besonders die christliche Schriftauslegung lässt vielfach Polemik gegen das Judentum erkennen, die sich durch die Jahrhunderte weiter fortgesetzt hat. Dennoch finden sich auch zahlreiche Berührungspunkte und gemeinsame Motive, die immer wiederkehren – neben spezifisch jüdischen und christlichen Traditionen. So entsteht in der patristischen und rabbinischen Auslegung ein vielfältiges Bild des biblischen Textes.

    Abstract: Immer mehr Menschen in der Schweiz praktizieren Yoga, glauben an eine Wiedergeburt und lassen sich komplementärmedizinisch behandeln. Barbara Zeugin untersucht, wie sich dieser religiöse Wandel auf die Begleitung am Lebensende auswirkt Insofern alternative Formen von Religion in der Schweiz zunehmen, ist es nicht erstaunlich, wenn in der Begleitung am Lebensende auch alternativ-religiöse Praktiken und alternative Heilverfahren sowie die entsprechenden Rationalisierungen immer mehr an Bedeutung gewinnen. Die Rekonstruktion einer solchen, als alternativ aufgefassten Sterbebegleitungspraxis führte die Religionswissenschaftlerin erstens in ein Hospiz für schwer Kranke und Sterbende und zweitens in ein anthroposophisch-medizinisches Spital, wo sie beobachtend und fragend den folgenden Fragen nachging: Welche alternativ-religiösen Handlungsformen und Rationalisierungen spielen in der Begleitung am Lebensende eine Rolle? Welche Bedeutung wird alternativen Heilpraktiken zugeschrieben? Wie sieht die konkrete Begleitungspraxis aus? Und worin besteht letztlich die Alternativität dieser Praxis resp. wie verhält sich diese zum Selbstanspruch der Palliative Care, die schwer Kranken und Sterbenden auch spirituell zu begleiten?

Between 2002 and 2019, at least two thousand people were killed in 57 countries for defending their lands and the environment.     Abstract: This comparative and multi-level study of state responses is confronted with huge complexity. Almost all existing theoretical and methodological approaches -such as secularism (including multiple secularisms or post-secularism)- do not take these complexities seriously into account, focusing on one concept only (wrong Leitdifferenz). They neglect different meanings of terms for agents in the field and they neglect the importance of different levels of governance, times, issues and minorities. This study, however, highlights minimally necessary complexity without drowning in this complexity. It draws clear conceptual, theoretical and methodological lessons, also in a broader sense for the study of governance of religious and cultural diversity and for the governance of migrations.     Abstract: An intimate look into three Victorian photo-settings, Pleasures Taken considers questions of loss and sexuality as they are raised by some of the most compelling and often misrepresented photographs of the era: Lewis Carroll's photographs of young girls; Julia Margaret Cameron's photographs of Madonnas; and the photographs of Hannah Cullwick, a "maid of all work," who had herself pictured in a range of masquerades, from a blackened chimney sweep to a bare-chested Magdalene. Reading these settings performatively, Carol Mavor shifts the focus toward the subjectivity of these girls and women, and toward herself as a writer.Mavor's original approach to these photographs emphatically sees sexuality where it has been previously rendered invisible. She insists that the sexuality of the girls in Carroll's pictures is not only present, but deserves recognition, respect, and scrutiny. Similarly, she sees in Cameron's photographs of sensual Madonnas surprising visions of motherhood that outstrip both Victorian and contemporary understandings of the maternal as untouchable and inviolate, without sexuality. Finally she shows how Hannah Cullwick, posing in various masquerades for her secret paramour, emerges as a subject with desires rather than simply a victim of her upper-class partner. Even when confronting the darker areas of these photographs, Mavor perseveres in her insistence on the pleasures taken-by the viewer, the photographer, and often by the model herself-in the act of imagining these sexualities. Inspired by Roland Barthes, and drawing on other theorists such as Julia Kristeva and Luce Irigaray, Mavor creates a text that is at once interdisciplinary, personal, and profoundly pleasurable

Bringing together traditional social-scientific research methods with techniques from digital media studies, archaeology, environmental nanoscience and the visual arts, After Childhood: Re-thinking Environment, Materiality and Media in Children's Lives presents a way of doing childhood research that sees children move in and out of focus. In doing so, children and their experiences are not completely displaced; rather, new perspectives on concerns facing children around the world are unravelled which dominant approaches to childhood studies have not yet fully addressed. The book draws on the author's detailed case studies from his research in historical and geographical contexts. Examples range from British children's engagement with plastics, energy and other matter, to the positioning of diverse Brazilian young people in environmental and resource challenges, and from archaeological evidence about childhoods in the USA and Europe to the global circulation of children's toys through digital media.     Abstract: This book sets out a rationale for the compatibility of Islam and Feminism and shows that Islamic Feminism is a diverse and valuable lens through which to analyse religion and gender. In addition, including scholarship written in Arabic, it promotes the decolonisation of knowledge production around Islam, gender and sexuality. Islamic feminism is a field of study that has been marginalised both in contemporary Islamic discourse and in feminist discourse. This study counters this marginalisation in two ways. Firstly, it enumerates the diversity of approaches used in Islamic feminist scholarship. Secondly, it foregrounds voices that are often neglected in discussions of Islam, gender and sexuality by highlighting and contrasting the work of two key scholars: Kecia Ali based in the USA and Olfa Youssef based in Tunisia. The book suggests that in addition to geo-political positioning, language, as a prior-text', also influences an individual's personal interpretation of Islamic feminism. This comparison, therefore, enables broader issues to be dissected, such as the interrelationships between life experiences, strategies of resistance to patriarchal and other forms of oppression, and the production of knowledge. This is a unique study of Islamic Feminism that will be of great use to any scholar of Religion and Gender, Islamic Studies, Gender Studies and the Sociology of Religion

Ähnliche Skepsis verdienen die Befürchtungen, der digitale Medienwandel würde uns zu atemlosen, oberflächlichen Maschinenmenschen machen.Wir können die Veränderung, die wir momentan erleben, nur verstehen, wenn wir sie präzise beschreiben und beim Untersuchen ihrer Auswirkungen nicht von Ängsten, Vorurteilen und Extrembeispielen ausgehen, sondern uns von wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen leiten lassen.Wampfler zeigt, wie sich Menschen durch ihre Techniknutzung verändern, wie sich die Bedeutung ihrer Beziehungen durch eine digitale Ebene wandelt und wie Lernen mit Neuen Medien möglich ist. Dabei wird darauf verzichtet, das Virtuelle als eine der Realität gegenüberstehende Sphäre abzugrenzen, weil digitale Kommunikation in ihrer Virtualität gleichzeitig Teil der Realität ist und sich das Leben im Cyberspace und das Leben im direkt wahrnehmbaren Raum gegenseitig beeinflussen.Ein kritischer Blick auf die Generation der »Digital Natives« zeigt auf, dass in ihrer Beschreibung nicht getrennt wird zwischen dem Verhalten, das Jugendliche unabhängig von digitaler Technologie auszeichnet, und spezifisch medienbedingten Veränderungen. Das brachte in den 1960er Jahren nicht nur die Systeme der städtischen Abfallsammlung an ihre Grenzen, sondern warf vor allem die Frage auf, wie sich der Müll möglichst unschädlich für Mensch und Natur »beseitigen« ließ.Die Studie von Roman Köster beschäftigt sich mit der gesellschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Abfallproblem nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Sie beschreibt die Entstehung eines »neuen« Umweltproblems sowie die politischen, ökonomischen und kommunikativen Strategien, um mit ihm zurechtzukommen.

    Abstract: Middlebrow Cinema challenges an often uninterrogated hostility to middlebrow culture that frequently dismisses it as conservative, which it often is not, and feminized or middle-class, which it often is. The volume defines the term relationally against shifting concepts of 'high' and 'low', and considers its deployment in connection with text, audience and institution. In exploring the concept of the middlebrow, this book recovers films that were widely meaningful to contemporary audiences, yet sometimes overlooked by critics interested in popular and arthouse extremes. It also addresses the question of socially-mobile audiences, who might express their aspirations through film-watching; and traces the cultural consequences of the movement of films across borders and between institutions.     Abstract: One can hardly exaggerate the importance of the church councils in the 5th and 6th centuries. They provide us with great insights into the situation in the late Roman Empire and particularly into the role of the Church at that time. Because of the rich source materials, the dramatic course it took and its overall historical relevance, the Council of Chalcedon (AD 451) is one of the most important events of that period. The decrees of this council led to major upheavals in the Church which continue to this very day. Hagit Amirav presents the first study on the social dynamics and various roles played by the stakeholders of this council, the power plays of the imperial representatives and the bishops, their actions and statements designed to further a consensus. At the centre of this analysis lies Marcian in his dual role as Emperor of the East Roman Empire as well as a central figure in the Church

Homosexualitäten und insbesondere die männliche Homosexualitäten scheinen hier den Nimbus des Unnatürlichen, Schrecklichen und Abstoßenden verloren zu haben. Christopher Treiblmayr analysiert diese Entwicklung am Beispiel des deutschen Films nach 1989 und erklärt die neue Sichtbarkeit Homosexueller am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts durch das Konzept einer „Krise der Männlichkeit". Dabei unterzieht er das wirkungsmächtige Ordnungsprinzip „Männlichkeit" einer historischen Kontextualisierung und Dekonstruktion. Der Vielfalt an homosexuellen Männlichkeitsentwürfen geht sein Buch sowohl im Mainstream-Kino als auch in Avantgarde-Produktionen nach.

    Abstract: "This volume highlights the ways in which the prospect of peace can generate anxieties and consequently set in motion social and political processes that reproduce and reactivate conflicts. In analysing this issue, the volume builds on the notion of ontological security and its recent applications to international relations theory. Although conflicts threaten the physical security of the parties involved, they also help settle existential questions about basic parameters of life, being, and identity, and thus over time become sources of ontological security. The prospect of peace, through the resolution or transformation of conflict, threatens to unsettle the stability and consistency of self-narratives, and their associated routines and habits at the individual, group, and state levels.The contributors argue two key points: 1) that ontological insecurity may set in motion political and social processes that reproduce and reactivate conflicts; 2) that coping with peace anxieties necessitates the formulation of alternative self-narratives at the individual, societal, and state levels that re-situate the Self in relation to Other and to the world at large. Consequently, the book analyses the ways in which, and the conditions under which, conflict resolution induces ontological insecurity, and the different ways in which ontological insecurity has prevented the successful culmination of peace processes in different conflict contexts, including Cyprus, Israel-Palestine and Northern Ireland. This book will be of much interest to students of critical security studies, conflict resolution, peace and conflict studies, social theory and IR in general"..
