    Abstract: "At the same time that this chapter continues to introduce readers to Tete Montoliu's life, musical work, and impact, it also challenges certain transnational assumptions regarding Spanish jazz. It is important to attend to ways in which the listening practices of mid-twentieth-century Anglophone audiences were shaped by the popular jazz market. In particular, it is by dispensing with misrepresentations of the connection between jazz and flamenco that readers can move beyond mere sketches of Spain and begin to appreciate the full complexity of Iberian jazz.     Abstract: "During the early medieval Islamicate period (800-1400 CE), discourses concerned with music and musicians were wide-ranging and contentious, and expressed in works on music theory and philosophy as well as literature and poetry. But in spite of attempts by influential scholars and political leaders to limit or control musical expression, music and sound permeated all layers of the social structure. Lisa Nielson here presents a rich social history of music, musicianship and the role of musicians in the early Islamicate era. Focusing primarily on Damascus, Baghdad and Jerusalem, Lisa Nielson draws on a wide variety of textual sources written for and about musicians and their professional/private environments -- including chronicles, literary sources, memoirs and musical treatises -- as well as the disciplinary approaches of musicology to offer insights into musical performances and the lives of musicians. In the process, the book sheds light onto the dynamics of medieval Islamicate courts, as well as how slavery, gender, status and religion intersected with music in courtly life.     Abstract: Jazz in der DDR war vielfältig, subversiv und oft nonkonform. Besonders in Jazzklubs, die überall im Land verstärkt ab den 1970er Jahren ins Leben gerufen worden, manifestierten sich beständige Reibungspunkte zwischen Staat und jungen Jazzbegeisterten, die eigensinnig ihre Musik hören, aufführen und veranstalten wollten. Jazz galt für seine Anhängerinnen und Anhänger dabei als eine Art Lebensentwurf neben statt gegen den SED-Staat. Anhand einer breiten Regionalstudie der Jazzszenen im damaligen Thüringer Raum untersucht das Buch mittels Zugängen aus Biografieforschung, Kulturtransfer und Alltagsgeschichte soziale Kontexte, musikalische Aneignungsformen sowie kulturbehördliche Kontrollstrukturen und das vielfältige Vorgehen der Staatssicherheit gegen Jazzmusik und Akteure zur Zeit der DDR.

    Abstract: "Citizenship is a fantasy of political community without others. How is it faring in today's world of authoritarianism, failed states, and climate crisis? In a world where democratic experiment is, by now, a networked and global proposition? What might we learn from music - and from ethnomusicology? The relationship between the idea of citizenship and music is long-standing, but it has not yet been looked at from a perspective informed by postcolonialism and today's decolonizing debates. The case studies in this volume are, consequently, drawn from across Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe. Its first chapter locates the current ethnomusicological interest in citizenship in broad critical landscape, focusing on approaches to audience, media, voice and performance. The second surveys a growing body of recent ethnomusicological literature on citizenship, theorized in terms of identity, technocracy, and intimacy. The third comprises case studies developing an approach to citizenship and political subjectivity beyond conventional liberal categories, defined by mobility ('the citizen on his bike'), collectivity ('the citizen in the crowd') and activism ('the citizen in the square'). The conclusion offers an argument about the implications for citizenship studies of today's thinking in ethnomusicology, musicology and sound studies, reflecting on the hardening rhetoric of political belonging in Europe."

Their chapters explore an acoustemology of intimacy, woman-centered eroticism generated through musical performance, desire and longing in ethnographic knowledge production, and listening as intimacy. On the other end of the spectrum, authors engage with and question the fetishization of race in jazz; examine conceptions of vulgarity and profanity in movement and dance-ethnography; and address pain, trauma, and violation, whether physical, spiritual, intellectual, or political. Authors in this volume strive toward empathetic, ethical, and creative ethnographic engagements that summon vulnerability and healing. They propose pathways to aesthetic, discursive transformation by reorienting conceptions of knowledge as emergent, performative, and sonically enabled.     Abstract: Im letzten Jahrzehnt der DDR fanden Punk und seine experimentellen Verästelungen in Post-Punk, New Wave, Elektronischer Musik und Avantgarde-Rock und -Pop auch in dem stillen Land ihre Hörer. Wer hörte, wollte oft aber auch mehr: "Magnetizdat DDR" erzählt, wie aus Konsumenten schnell Produzenten wurden und DDR-weit eine sich selbst verlegende Kassettentäter-Szene entstand, der Magnetbanduntergrund. Ein Magnetizdat, in Ableitung von Samizdat und Tamizdat in der sowjetischen Gegenkultur. Hier wie dort, in Ost wie West, war dabei Multimedialität das Gebot der Stunde. Literaten ließen sich von Bands befeuern, Musiker entdeckten Barock- und Experimental-Lyrik, Super-8-Filmer und bildende Künstler griffen zum Mikrofon, international renommierte Projekte nahmen hier ihren Anfang.

    Abstract: The present work describes and analyses the causes and the course of the revival of Gaelic traditional music in Scotland in the 20th century, in particular using the musicological and cultural theoretical models by Tamara Livingston and Owe Ronström. The work focuses on the music of the groups Runrig and Capercaillie, both of which, embedded in the sociocultural and cultural-political changes of the “Gaelic Renaissance” in the 1970s and under the influence of Anglo-American popular musical styles, began to create their own hybrid musical forms of expression.〈eng〉

    Abstract: "Gold, Festivals, and Music in Southeast Brazil: Sounding Portugueseness is a study of the musical legacy of the 18th century Brazilian gold rush that integrates ethnographic research of the main genres of former mining communities in Brazil -- from liturgical music in the style of European art music to Afro-Brazilian musical expressions. Its content and structure are informed by Norbert Elias' idea of the civilizing process, which is explored regarding its relevance in interpreting sociocultural processes and choreo-musical expressions in the small town Morro Vermelho. The book's innovative feature is its focus on a little-known area to non-Brazilian scholars,and its focus on the colonial and European heritage in Brazil. Morro Vermelho's cultural traditions have received relatively limited attention. The Catholic festival of Our Lady of Nazareth provides a setting for the documentation and analysis of the musical setting and is thus placed at the centre of the discussion. It leads through the vast writings on Brazilian identity and challenges the view on Brazilian-ness as constructed in terms of the mixing of races. Norbert Elias's concept of the "civilizing process" structures the book and is relevant for understanding the cultural sphere of the festival of Our Lady of Nazareth. The book combines discourses of Portugueseness with historical sources and observations from fieldwork and community building in the virtual world. The focus on the music to support social constructions of "Portugueseness" is supported with evidence from diverse data sources: music (literature and fieldwork recordings), original interviews, marketing materials and historical narratives. The combination of archival, ethnographic and bibliographic research methods attempts a seamless narrative.     Abstract: "In this deep dive into the Jamaican music world filled with the voices of creators, producers, and consumers, Larisa Kingston Mann-DJ, media law expert, and ethnographer-identifies how a culture of collaboration lies at the heart of Jamaican creative practices and legal personhood. In street dances, recording sessions, and global genres such as the riddim, notions of originality include reliance on shared knowledge and authorship as an interactive practice. In this context, musicians, music producers, and audiences are often resistant to conventional copyright practices. And this resistance, Mann reveals, goes beyond cultural concerns.     Abstract: "Ralph Ellison famously characterized ensemble jazz improvisation as "antagonistic cooperation." Both collaborative and competitive, musicians play with and against one another to create art and community. In Antagonistic Cooperation, Robert G. O'Meally shows how this idea runs throughout twentieth-century African American culture to provide a new history of Black creativity and aesthetics. From the collages of Romare Bearden and paintings of Jean-Michel Basquiat to the fiction of Ralph Ellison and Toni Morrison to the music of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, O'Meally explores how the worlds of African American jazz, art, and literature have informed one another. He argues that these artists drew on the improvisatory nature of jazz and the techniques of collage not as a way to depict a fractured or broken sense of Blackness but rather to see the Black self as beautifully layered and complex. They developed a shared set of methods and motives driven by the belief that art must involve a sense of community. O'Meally's readings of these artists and their work emphasize how they have not only contributed to understanding of Black history and culture but also provided hope for fulfilling the broken promises of American democracy"--

    Abstract: Der Kalte Krieg wurde kälter, der Kampf um die politisch-ideologische Lufthoheit zwischen Ost und West heftiger. Aber zugleich geschah in den späten 70ern und 80ern Erstaunliches. Der deutsch-deutsche Kulturaustausch geriet heftig in Bewegung - ausgerechnet in dem Bereich, der als besonders sensibel galt: der Pop- und Rockmusik. DDR-Bands wie City, Pankow und Puhdys wurden erstmals auf BRD-Tour geschickt, Karat traten bei "Wetten, dass...?" auf, ließen Hunderttausende von West-Mark nach Ost-Berlin fließen. Im Gegenzug durften Westkünstler wie Udo Lindenberg, Peter Maffay und Rio Reiser in der DDR spielen, rockten Die Toten Hosen semilegal in Ostkirchen. Es ging um Propaganda und Devisen, versteckte Botschaften, politische Manöver. Joachim Hentschel erzählt hier zum ersten Mal die ganze Geschichte dieser Zeit, spricht mit Zeitzeugen und beleuchtet die Hintergründe: Wer waren die Strippenzieher? Welche Rolle spielten Stasi, DDR-Kulturministerium und FDJ, westliche Plattenfirmen und Impresarios? Und wie viel trug der große Kulturhandel zur Wende von 1989 und zum Mauerfall bei?

Im »jazz-echo«, der achtseitigen Jazz-Beilage des GONDEL-Magazins, beschrieben und bewerteten sechs fachkundige Publizisten aus drei Generationen begeistert, skeptisch oder polemisch die rasanten künstlerischen Entwicklungen. Redakteur und Hauptautor des »jazz-echo« war in den 1960er Jahren Siegfried Schmidt-Joos. Auch seine Entwicklung vom ausschließlichen Jazz-Experten zum weiträumigen Pop-Journalisten und Rock-Chronisten spiegelt dieses Buch, das mit kritisch-kulinarischen Kostbarkeiten die Zeit des florierenden Diskurses in der Musik wie in der Musikberichterstattung in Erinnerung ruft.
