Abstract: Introduction -- Understanding Aspirational Talk -- Business Ethics Perspective on Responsibility -- Synthesis: Applying Business Ethics to Aspirational Talk -- Conclusion.
Abstract: Aspirational talk has gained increasing research attention as a compelling concept theoretically explaining the potential of talk-action discrepancies in corporate responsibility communication to instigate organizational change. Under certain conditions, aspirational talk can facilitate discourse, agreement, reframing, and corporate reflexivity. However, perceived talk-action discrepancies can negatively affect organizational members, leading to disengagement, and demotivation, causing emotional exhaustion, exposing employees to vulnerabilities, and even catalyzing unethical or illicit behaviors. Thus, this book focuses on how aspirational talk becomes irresponsible in an organizational context, and how it can be avoided. The author proposes that aspirational talk becomes irresponsible if it creates expectations that lead to illegitimate harm to employees or involved stakeholders. A framework is derived, constituting the finding that it takes two types of investments into performativity and responsibility conditions, to avoid the irresponsible use of aspirational talk – and thus, to inspire responsibly. About the author Marie Schwimmer completed her doctoral study under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Andreas Suchanek at the Dr. Werner Jackstädt Chair of Economic and Business Ethics at HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management and the Wittenberg Center for Global Ethics. Her primary research and practice focus is on corporate responsibility, sustainability communication, and business ethics as well as particularly aspirational talk in organizations.

Abstract: The seduction-theory defines film in a broader sense as a medium of seduction, based on the French concept of séduction. It is a theoretical approach influenced by continental philosophy and classical film theory, linked to a three-stage analytical model. The book introduces the theoretical foundations and, using various classical and contemporary examples from film history, presents a genuine method of film analysis. The Author Prof. Dr. Marcus Stiglegger teaches Film and Image Studies in Muenster and Regensburg. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content. .

Abstract: This book examines the changing significance of intra-European labor mobility in the 21st century. The focus is on the driving forces, the labor market effects and the regulation of this mobility. It is shown that there is a demand for workers with different qualifications in the "post-industrial" societies of Western Europe. This demand is primarily met by migration from the enlarged EU. However, this is no longer traditional labor migration, but the mobility of EU citizens. This brings with it new opportunities, but also challenges in a transnational mobility space, which is also a space of inequality. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

Abstract: The welcome culture of 2015 in Germany has, not least due to the (re)definition of safe countries of origin, turned into a deportation policy. How can this change in policy be understood and is it also accompanied by a change of attitude among the population? Which reasons for and which reasons against the admission of refugees are cited in social debates? This volume brings together analyses of the social discourse on dealing with refugees, questions of labour market integration and the practice of counselling refugees. Alongside academic analyses are reflective contributions from the practice of migration policy. Abstract: In the pandemic, the state in Germany reacts in lockdown with restrictions within the private sphere of a shutdown of the leisure and cultural sphere, while the work contexts are only peripherally affected. Out of this crisis, new techniques of leadership are intensifying. Discipline and norms are no longer suitable enough to ensure productivity in today's world, which is why there is a shift towards self-directed processes and mechanisms such as flexibility, motivation and goal setting. The actors are therefore no longer assigned a fixed place in the sense of discipline, but are encouraged to surrender to the new control mechanisms and to adapt themselves again and again with a high degree of self-control. The realistic fear of contagion reinforces the actors' willingness to submit to these forms of mobilization. The Editor PD Dr. Rolf Hepp teaches at the Institute for Sociology at the FU Berlin and coordinates the SUPI-Network.

Abstract: This volume offers a media-theoretically oriented perspective on the Space Race. It analyzes feature films, documentaries, live television coverage, magazines, stamps, posters, ticker-tape parades. They visualized the Space Race in a specific way and circulated it transnationally from 'East' to 'West' and from 'West' to 'East' across the 'Iron Curtain'. It will be shown how reporting on the Space Race between 1955 and 1975 can be explained as a globalizing history of the intertwining of images during the Cold War. Abstract: This book explores the fragile process of city brand development thoughtfully. Backgrounds are explained, experiences recounted, and city branding inspired. The dream of every brand maker: develop a city into a strong brand – perhaps even a myth. Yet, myths' creation is a curiosity. When purposeful, are there specific success recipes, and can those responsible be identified? Can the process be replicated? How do brand makers navigate city and brand complexity practically? How do they offer success prospects to the arduous process of creating a city brand? How do they handle external criticism and self-doubts? City images emerge from complex and random processes. In global urban competition, this process is enriched with brand making achievements. Success isn't guaranteed, depending on discussed conditions. Lastly, rules for effective city branding are outlined. The Authors Eric Häusler is a historian with a keen interest in social science concepts. Currently, he is conducting a habilitation project on urbanization processes in Tokyo, New York, and Zurich in the 1960s. Extended research stays have taken him to Sophia University in Tokyo and presently to The New School and New York University in New York City. His most recent publication is his dissertation titled "Ökonomisches Scheitern. Solidarische Praktiken in Bern 1750-1900" (published by transcript Verlag). Jürgen Häusler is retired. At the beginning of his career, he engaged in social science research and later assumed leadership responsibilities for many years at a globally leading consulting firm specializing in brand development. Additionally, he taught at the University of Leipzig and published on the topic. Both authors share a passion for a multidisciplinary, theory-guided, and practice-oriented exploration of the phenomena of the city and city branding. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

Abstract: How do international students and alumni contribute to development in their countries of origin? Is the development effect larger when students return to their countries of origin directly after completing their studies and become involved locally there, or can they also support the development of their country of origin if they remain abroad after their studies and contribute their knowledge and capital to the development process of their country of origin via transnational networks? This question is examined in the case of the German scholarship program of the Catholic Academic Foreigner Service (KAAD) in five countries of different developing regions: Georgia, Ghana, Indonesia, Colombia and Palestinian territories. The authors Dr. Sascha Krannich is a research associate at the Institute for the History of Medicine at the Justus Liebig University of Giessen with a focus on migration, human rights and global health. Abstract: Introduction -- Discovering the Endangered Scholar -- Toward Categorization -- Contemporary Challenges.
Abstract: ‘Endangered scholars’ is a recently highly relevant, yet historical notion. Embedded in the greater history of the 20th and 21st centuries, it captures the phenomenon of scholars who, after years of intellectual work and integration in their societies of origin, are forced to seek rescue in foreign host societies. The pressing urgency of the topic thus has an important historical background. From escaping Russian intellectuals after 1917 to the protection of Jewish refugees during World War II, Algerian intellectuals in contemporary history, or persecuted academics from Turkey today: Over the course of about a century, categories of inclusion, transnational relations, and forms of agency of scholars at risk remained surprisingly stable (and hence diachronously and synchronously comparable) while they also adjusted flexibly to contemporary conditions. This collective volume carves out this historical development and its recent expressions. It brings together researchers in a vivid yet largely unconnected field of migration and refugee studies. By developing a complex image of the origin of the global history and politics of protecting endangered scholars from the early 20th century until today, the book contributes to research on academics in exile as a part of refugee research, migration studies, the history of higher education, and the contemporary history of societies. The interdisciplinary volume explores the phenomenon as a historical, political and legal subject, brings together scholars of forced migration and intellectual studies, and includes currently affected scholars into those reflections. Abstract: The Euro crisis of 2008 had a deep impact on German-Greek relations. The exchange of blows in media, and amongst politicians created a deep divide and made old wounds visible - wounds that lie in the Occupation of Greece by Nazi Germany and its fascist allies during World War 2. In 2014 German foreign policy towards Greece shifted to include reconciliatory measures, marking the beginning of Germany's foreign policy of reconciliation. One area of focus is memory culture and the Greek martyr communities, meaning villages and towns that experienced extreme violence, destruction, and executions. Diving into these places of terror and memory, the book analyzes German foreign policy of reconciliation while providing a profound view onto history, diplomacy, and the widely unknown Greek memory landscape. It entails a thorough review of German-Greek relations, more than seven unique maps and 10 case studies, accompanied by photographs and over 35 interviews. It shows how foreign policy, conflict and reconciliation intertwine and how international affairs meet the local level of everyday citizens. About the author Charalampos Babis Karpouchtsis is a political scientist with a background in foreign policy, strategy and memory studies. He finished his PhD in conflict and reconciliation studies in the Jena Center for Reconciliation Studies. He is a research associate in the University of the Armed Forces in Hamburg and a JCRS fellow.

Abstract: The film of the so-called Islamic State is part of the still relatively opaque history of radical Sunni Islamist video propaganda, a field in which it is simultaneously its strongest exponent. Through its imports of aesthetics in the age of digitalization and the concurrent de-professionalization of film, this violent propaganda film has interestingly drawn attention for its seeming likeness to Hollywood film, an odd comparison that the Islamic State itself opposes through its own filmic antagonisms to commercial cinema. In an intermittent attempt at attacking cinematic illusionism, it has made increasing use of cinematic devices in order to communicate its violent and anti-humanist ideology – and has thereby entered a state of filmic self-contradiction. This book analyzes and uncovers the mechanisms and dynamics of ideological communication in the Islamic State’s videos through a combined historical and neoformalist approach, making them predictable for future researchers. About the author Yorck Beese is a film director, video producer and film scholar. During his time as a researcher in the junior research group Jihadism on the Internet (2017-2022), he has intensively researched the propaganda film of radical Sunni Islamism as well as other propaganda films. His fields of expertise include film analysis, propaganda film history, film aesthetics, and narratology.

Abstract: Why did the postcolonial Tunisian state promise development? How do these promises reverberate in the hopes and dreams of Tunisians today? And how do they fit into contemporary global capitalist structures of exploitation? Starting from the everyday life at a French factory in Tunisia this book explores the relationship between the political economy of Tunisia, postcolonial promises of the Tunisian state and the hopes and dreams of Tunisians working in the factory. It argues for taking the concept of development seriously not as a desirable policy goal but as a multi-dimensional social and political fact: as the unfolding of global capitalism, as a postcolonial nation-state project, and as a personal everyday imaginary. The book employs a longue durée perspective that analyzes contemporary desires and expectations while tracing and placing them inside Tunisia’s history. It thus contributes to our understanding of state-society relations and global capitalism in Tunisia. About the author André Weißenfels is a research associate at the Otto Suhr Institute of the Free University of Berlin. His research focusses on the political economy of West Asia and North Africa as well as community decision-making processes and collective resource management.

Abstract: Located within the field of journalism research, this book deals with multimedia storytelling in digital journalism. It focuses on the very fundamental question of how previously established forms of presentation can and have evolved in the digital age. Using a multi-method design, it first conducts a systematic literature analysis of international studies on the selected topic (n=381). Hypotheses derived from this study serve as the basis for a quantitative content analysis of more than 1,700 multimedia stories from German and US media companies, which also forms the core of the analysis. In a final step, the thesis discusses these findings with journalists and story producers from Germany and the USA (n=21). Overall, multimedia stories were produced in a complex and resource-intensive manner just a decade ago, but have since developed into an established and consolidated format in editorial departments. Technological development, the focus on the needs of the audience and the "turn to mobile" are determining the future of the format. About the author Rosanna Planer is a research associate at the Institute for Communication and Media Studies at Leipzig University. Her research focuses on innovative forms of journalistic storytelling, such as multimedia stories, virtual reality, and podcasts.

Abstract: Introduction -- A Theory for German Security Policy -- Case Studies -- Conclusion.
Abstract: German Structural Pacifism examines the influence of Germany’s lessons of the past on its security policy since reunification in an approach that is both novel and timely in the context of the Russia-Ukraine War. Germany’s lessons of the past provide contradictory “right ways” for Germany to overcome its authoritarian past and serve to legitimate political interests in security policy decision-making. Reconciling competing political interests and contradictory narratives results in a security policy that prioritizes “the right way” to do security policy is over its effectiveness. It is the author’s great merit to have defined the past 30 years of German security policy under the term “Structural Pacifism.” I find this conclusive. Sönke Neitzel, Chair of Military History at the University of Potsdam An accurate depiction of Germany’s systemic neglect of its armed forces since reunification, demonstrating why it is no surprise that our armed forces are naked. A follow up including the Zeitenwende would be very interesting. Abstract: Introduction -- (European) youth policy and why research it -- Europeanisation and soft law -- EU Youth Strategy and fsQCA -- Case study analysis -- Conclusions.
Abstract: Influence of “hard” law on national policies still is a central topic in Europeanisation research. One aspect often overlooked is the impact of “soft” law instruments such as the “Open Method of Coordination” (OMC). Through the OMC all member states agree on common goals and exchange “best practices” to improve policy coordination in a certain area without the obligation (how) to design policies. OMC impacts in individual member states have been studied extensively, yet a comparative perspective explaining their variance is lacking. This study by Niclas Beinborn tries to fill this gap by analysing the different impacts of a recent OMC: the European Youth Strategy 2010 (EUYS). His analysis is twofold: in a first step he applies theory-driven fuzzy-set QCA to a novel dataset depicting the variance of national activities around the EUYS. As causalities remain unclear, in a second step he presents an innovative analysis framework encompassing two dimensions – national motivation and relative openness to implement non-binding EU law – to define ideal types of OMC adaptation. Case studies on the EUYS in Germany and Ireland proof the potential of this framework to explain why and how OMCs work (differently). About the author Niclas Beinborn worked as a research associate at the German Research Institute for Public Administration in Speyer. There, he extensively studied child and youth policy in Germany and Europe. As of 2021, he works as a desk officer in the federal administration.

Abstract: Some (web) television texts achieve immense commercial success. Certain commercially successful texts boast dedicated, creative, and exponentially growing fandoms. These fan communities engage in specific fan practices that are significantly influenced by the textualities of the texts and their contexts of production, distribution, and consumption. Increased fan engagement resulting in the acceleration of the text’s popularity leads to the following inquiries: · How is the series influenced by the interactions among and the relationships between the producers, consumers, distributors, and content? · What are the sites of these interactions? · What are the social, cultural, economic, and political factors that impact the series? · How do the text’s contexts of production, distribution, and consumption lead to the text’s popularity in mainstream media? In pursuit of an answer to these questions, the analytical lens of the ‘mediaverse’ is developed. An inductive study, this book explores four television series’ that fall within the scope of speculative fiction to characterise the mediaverse and highlight the interconnectedness among the networked nodes of new media. These wield a significant influence on the production and consumption of media and its presence in our everyday lives, thus outlining the mediaverse as a tool for the analysis of a media texts and practices that shape contemporary media culture. Abstract: This book investigates water issues in the Euphrates-Tigris basin between Turkey, Syria and Iraq (Iran). It presents the importance of water in the world and especially for the countries of the Euphrates-Tigris basin, the water resources of the three riparian countries, their advantages and disadvantages, the amount of reservoir construction in the three riparian countries, their water disagreements and conflicts, international water law. The importance of water in the Ottoman period is presented, the evolution of Turkey's water policy in the 20th and 21st centuries, the connection and interdependence of Turkey's water policy with its foreign and domestic policies are shown in detail. Separate reference is made to non-state actors, such as the Kurds of Turkey, Syria and Iraq. The work emphasizes that Turkey is a unique country in the world with its water policy in the Euphrates-Tigris basin: no other country is able to use water in such a multi-purpose way to achieve various goals. Abstract: This anthology is a unique compilation of scientific contributions on the topic of measurement and understanding, showing how terms such as number, measurement, understanding, model, and pattern are used in a wide variety of disciplines. Based on results and experiences from their own projects, 23 researchers comment on the potentials and limitations of their individual methodological approaches as well as success factors of interdisciplinary collaboration. In doing so, they fathom the relative importance of quantification and empirical evidence for each of their disciplines and examine how the methodological approaches shape their existing models and images. Their common goal is to understand the world; however, their methods are highly diverse. Abstract: Basic knowledge of crypto assets -- Regulatory classification of crypto assets -- Developments at national and European level -- Comparison and critical appraisal of regulatory approaches.
Abstract: In this book, the complex topic of crypto securities is presented in a compact, understandable and practical manner. In addition to conveying the fundamentals and technical background of the crypto market, a classification in the various areas of regulatory law is made. The focus is on German law, although reference is also made to the European equivalence standards. In order to succeed in a correct classification into European financial market law, both the Liechtenstein law on tokens and VT service providers and the European proposal for a regulation on markets for crypto assets are discussed in detail and compared with the German regulatory provisions on crypto assets. The goal, in addition to creating a basic understanding of how crypto assets work, is to construct a comprehensive overall picture of their regulatory treatment in Germany and to include possible implications of a European push. The work thus provides guidance for individuals who, for example, want to invest in crypto assets or start a business related to crypto assets. The Contents: - Basic knowledge of crypto assets - Regulatory classification of crypto assets - Developments on national and European level (TVTG, MiCAR) - Comparison and critical appraisal of regulatory approaches. The Author: Hannah Appel is a staff member of the Research Lab for Law and applied Technologies at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences and an associate at a leading international commercial law firm. Already during her studies of business law, she intensively dealt with digitalization topics as well as European and financial market law. This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). Abstract: Senicide in history and ethnography -- The meaning of senicide today -- Forms of senicide -- On the ethics of dealing with senicide.
Abstract: Raimund Pousset gives in this essential a concise account of senicide, the modern form of cultural killing of the elderly. He sheds light on both the history and the current situation of an ancient method. Practiced for millennia almost everywhere in the world, this custom of actively disposing of old 'useless' people or passively putting oneself to death is increasingly being revived today. Senicide is a nameless and silent scandal in our modern, enlightened society. The author wishes to bring this silent death into the focus of a mindful professional public, for the segregation of old age and the avalanche of costs in health care suggest that senicide will continue to grow in sad significance. The content - Senicide in history and ethnography - The meaning of senicide today - Forms of senicide - On the ethics of dealing with senicide The target groups - Lecturers and students of gerontology, palliative medicine, psychology, sociology, theology, philosophy, ethnology, history, jurisprudence and cultural studies - Doctors, nurses, hospice and euthanasia workers, clergy, social workers, educators and ethicists. The author Raimund Pousset, a qualified educationalist with additional training in supervision and psychotherapy, taught supervision as a senior lecturer at a technical college for organisation and management as well as gerontology and education at a technical college for social education and in geriatric care. This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.

Abstract: Definition of terms and delimitation -- Elements, motifs, themes -- Gothic Cinema before 1960 -- Gothic Cinema from 1960 onwards -- Gothic around 2000: old monsters in new guises -- Between old and new -- The Haunting of Hill House (2018) -- Dracula (2020) -- Crimson Peak (2015).
Abstract: Gothic Cinema closes a gap in German-language film discourse: for the first time, the volume sheds light on a hitherto little-discussed film context. It considers Gothic Cinema as a form of unofficial historiography that allows a look not only at the history of film and its technique, but also at moral concepts, gender relations, collective fears or aesthetic currents. A delimitation and definition of the term and the central elements of the Gothic are followed by a comprehensive historical overview from 1896 to the present day. Three in-depth analyses of individual post-2015 gothic films and television series round out the review. On the one hand, the examples examined are representative in terms of typical elements, motifs or topoi, and on the other hand, they display peculiarities and breaks that prove fruitful for a cultural and media studies investigation. The author Dr. Katharina Rein is a research assistant at the University of Potsdam. She received her PhD in Cultural Studies from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in 2019. Her dissertation on the cultural and media history of stage magic in the late 19th century was awarded the Jubilee Prize for Young Scholars by Büchner Verlag. Her academic work has been published in four languages to date. This book is a translation of the original German edition “Gothic Cinema” by Rein, Katharina, published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH in 2021. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.

Abstract: Truths, facts and opinions on the climate issue are often met with psychological or social defense, both publicly and privately. Based on selected psychological and philosophical theories as well as data material, this book shows how defense comes about, how it works, and how, on the other hand, the necessary recognition can succeed on various levels. It is only through recognition that constructive discourse becomes possible. This book offers all the basics to be able to theoretically and practically solve communication conflicts between defense and recognition in the climate crisis. The author Dr. Barbara Strohschein is a philosopher and psychologist working in research and consulting. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

Abstract: Introduction - What is at stake -- Sustainability -- Hemp as a crop -- UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) -- What needs to be done?.
Abstract: The cannabis plant, as a hemp, could contribute better than previously thought to achieving the goals of the UN Sustainable Development Report, the so-called Agenda 2030 and its 17 SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). From a health perspective, its medicinal use is the main focus, but it is also used in cosmetic products and in food offerings for humans and animals. In the context of the increasing climate crisis, hemp helps especially to cope with the CO2 problem: in agriculture by binding the CO2 similar to reforestation, in industry as a recyclable raw material substitute for example as a plastic substitute, in clothing, in technology or in construction. At the moment, unfortunately, the immense prices and high demand show a different picture, from citizens who want to but can't or aren't allowed to, from farmers who have to overcome immense bureaucratic hurdles to an industry that is deterred from investing by complex rules and laws. The springer essential shows how this potential could also be realized in Germany. The content The plant Cannabis Sativa L. The sustainable benefits of hemp The possible consequences of economic use The four basic conditions for legalization The author Jonas M. Westphal has already given lectures on the sensibility of legalizing cannabis in Germany and Europe during his logistics studies. Through aroused curiosity about the plant Cannabis Sativa L., he networked with retired cannabis expert Prof. Stephan Quensel of the University of Bremen, author of "The Misery of Addiction Prevention," who also wrote the foreword. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

Abstract: Financial management in family businesses is a special challenge. CFOs in particular are often at the crossroads of various interests and roles. However, not least the public reticence of family businesses has so far ensured that there is a lack of knowledge about these interrelationships. A specialist circle of CFOs from large German-speaking family businesses is dedicated at the Center for Family Business at the University of St.Gallen (Switzerland) to discuss these issues . In this book, these experts share their wealth of knowledge and experience with the public for the first time. Along a five-step model, they shed light on key areas of responsibility that go far beyond mere financial management. They discuss issues of transparency and compliance, from performance and strategy to governance - and provide concrete suggestions for everyday business life. Whether manager, owner, or advisory board member, anyone who bears responsibility in a family business can benefit from this bridge between theory and practice. The CFO network fbxperts.ch has also been present internationally since 3 years: in Italy, Spain, France, UK and other locations.

Abstract: This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to portfolio management and investments. Focusing on four core areas – portfolio management, equities, bonds, and derivatives – it is primarily intended for undergraduate and graduate students alike. However, it will also benefit practitioners working in the fields of financial analysis and portfolio management and professionals who aspire to such professional activities in the financial industry. To ensure its high practical relevance, the book includes a host of case studies and examples from real-world practice, mainly from the German and Swiss financial markets. Additionally, the book shows how to implement the models in Microsoft Excel.

Abstract: The book presents the results of the first comprehensive empirical study on the control of minimum wages in Germany. It offers an overview of the challenges and problems of enforcement and compliance with minimum wages, taking three sectors as examples (construction, meat industry, hospitality). On the basis of numerous interviews with experts from the field (e.g. trade unions, employers' associations, customs) and a comprehensive evaluation of the broad international research literature, it identifies starting points and strategies for sustainably improving compliance with and enforcement of minimum wages. The content - Effects of the statutory minimum wage - Interaction between minimum and collectively agreed wages - International findings on the enforcement of labour standards - Control of minimum wages in Germany - The main construction trade - meat industry - hotel and restaurant industry - Strategic starting points for more effective controls The target groups Politicians, trade unions and employers' associations as well as experts and students from the social, economic, social and legal sciences The authors Prof. Dr. Gerhard Bosch is Senior Professor at the Institute for Work and Qualification (IAQ) at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Abstract: Introduction -- Open Societies as Guarantors of Life Chances -- Morals, Moralizations and Landscapes -- Open and Closed Societies -- Landscapes as Consequences and Side Consequences of Enmity to the Open Society -- ... and then probably the Open Society with its Landscapes after all -- The Open Society and its Life Chances - a Condensate as a Conclusion.
Abstract: In the face of great challenges, utopian thinking is currently in vogue. The fact that utopias, with their ideas of an idealized target society, are not compatible with the basic features of an Open Society was already pointed out by Karl Popper in his book 'Die Offene Gesellschaft und ihre Feinde' (The Open Society and its Enemies) under the impression of National Socialism and Stalinism. In the present book, further forms of Closed Societies and the principal similarities (and differences) of their construction are examined. This is done by drawing on Ralf Dahrendorf's concept of life chances, in which he deals with the interaction of options and ligatures. The ambivalence of Dahrendorf's understanding of ligatures, since they restrict options on the one hand, but also give them meaning on the other, is resolved by a threefold differentiation: into ethical and moral, internally and externally directed, and explicit and implicit ligatures. While the former are capable of enabling life chances, the latter tend to limit them. Based on this, the authors elaborate on the landscape (side) consequences of different Closed Societies and how ill-suited they are for dealing with current challenges. The authors Dr. Dr. Olaf Kühne is professor of Urban and Regional Development at the University of Tübingen. Dr. Karsten Berr is a research associate in the research group on Urban and Regional Development at the University of Tübingen. Dr. Corinna Jenal is an academic councillor in the research group on Urban and Regional Development at the University of Tübingen.

Abstract: Social Widerspiegelung is a central area of human life, however, it has been little researched for the theorization of social work. Otger Autrata and Bringfriede Scheu present the foundations of social Widerspiegelung and establish the essential connection between social Widerspiegelung and subjective quality of life. This makes an important contribution to the development of social work theory: The basic research on social Widerspiegelung is linked to the tasks of social work in discipline and profession. The authors Otger Autrata is head of the research institute RISS in Feldkirchen in Carinthia. Bringfriede Scheu holds a professorship for the theory of social work in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programme in social work at the Carinthian University of Applied Sciences. This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.

Abstract: A neopragmatic theoretical framing and its operationalization -- The multiple causes of coastal land loss in Louisiana - an overview -- Land loss and life chances -- The loss of land in mass media representation -- Terrestrial marine hybrids on the Louisiana coast - a phenomenological acces -- Conclusion.
Abstract: This book is oriented on testing and developing the neopragmatic approach of horizontal geographies, in which we follow approaches of natural sciences, social sciences, and cultural studies. Regional focus is thereby put on a rapidly changing elemental space and its social representations, characterized by unstable and not well-defined hybridities: coastal Louisiana. This region is highly dynamic: the Mississippi River in particular, with its extensive sediments, has shifted the coastal fringe of present-day Louisiana into the Gulf of Mexico. This land gain is contrasted by natural processes, but also by processes resultant of human intervention which cause marine encroachment. A complex interplay of different aspects is directly and indirectly leading to coastal land loss which makes the question of how to describe emerging hybrid spaces virulent and highlights the limits of a positivist understanding of boundaries that is also physically geographical. In the neopragmatic tradition, positivist research findings will be framed in social constructivist terms and supplemented by phenomenological approaches to Louisiana's coastal space, thus suggesting the need for and potentials of horizontal geographic integration of different theoretical and methodological approaches as well as researcher perspectives and data bases. Abstract: The volume investigates the socio-material dimension and media practices of cooperation – before, during and beyond situations. Cooperation is understood as reciprocal interplay operating with or without consensus, in co-presence or absence of the involved actors in distributed situations. Artefacts, bodies, texts and infrastructures are the media that make cooperation possible. They enable and configure reciprocal accomplishments – and are themselves created through media practices in cooperative situations. Abstract: This essential explains the most important decisions to be made in the practice of cultural tourism marketing. After an introduction to the term and the central characteristics, the most important activities in the planning process of cultural tourism marketing are presented. Building on this, Andrea Hausmann and Sarah Schuhbauer describe marketing strategies that are particularly relevant in cultural tourism practice. These include dealing with relevant types of demand (segmentation), brand management (branding), the realisation of innovations (digitisation) and the behaviour towards the competition (cooperation and networks). In a next step, typical key aspects in the marketing mix of cultural tourism service providers are examined. Finally, the importance of staff for the quality of experience of tourism demand is elaborated. Abstract: Peacebuilding and reconciliation between groups and entire nations that share a violent past are among the toughest, yet most important, challenges for modern societies. Opposing perspectives, disagreements about the interpretation of historical events or even entirely different narratives too often impede processes of rapprochement. How can teaching history contribute to overcoming the demarcation lines of such narratives and resolving historical conflicts that are passed on from generation to generation or renewed, amplified and exploited for present political purposes? This volume comprises twelve case studies—from Central and Eastern Europe to South Africa, from the Middle East to East Asia—exploring stories about successes and failures in the never-ending struggle for peaceful coexistence. All of them ultimately reflect the fundamental question of our discipline: Can we learn from history? Abstract: Without language, not much else would exist: no writing, no computer – as a matter of fact, no technical or medical progress that make our lives less painful, and easier indeed; but also not some horrors that characterize our world. In fact, language is what defines humans and distinguishes them from other living beings – and is the basis of all other developments. How is it possible that something as complex and fascinating as 'language' has come into being at all? How does language 'work'? And how did it develop? What is common to all languages – and why are there so many? Further questions are how man began to write, and how printing developed – in which languages? Why not in any language? And does this teach us anything for further developments? In trying to answer these and other questions, we experience an exciting history of scientific research. The Author Hans Giessen is a double habilitated professor and affiliated with the University of Helsinki (Finland), Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce (Poland), and Saarland University in Saarbrücken (Germany). He was knighted, as a Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Mérite, by the French president. His works have been translated into several languages.

Abstract: Since the mid-1990s, the term 'foodscapes' has been used. Its reference to landscape opens it up to a wide theoretical variety and numerous methodological approaches. Through the large 'semantic yard' of the concept of landscape it becomes clear that the approach of foodscapes aims less at the description or pure positivistic analysis of the production, distribution and consumption of food, but is rather open to aesthetic approaches, normative questions, aspects of the connection of food and space with meaning. In this respect, research on foodscapes is not simply a part of food geography but reaches beyond it. With this anthology we contribute to the development of the research field on foodscapes and combine diverse perspectives from different disciplines, locations and theoretical as well as methodological backgrounds on the diversity of what foodscapes can be. Our anthology 'Foodscapes - Theory, History, and Current European Examples' is the result of the collaboration of lecturers and students from the universities of Bucharest, Madrid, Rome and Tübingen. Abstract: This book deals with the current economic policy of the People's Republic of China. In addition to a brief overview of the economic history since the founding and the economic models, an overview of both the forms of enterprises and the Chinese labor market is given. The book pays particular attention to the development of China's e-commerce sector. Equally significant are China's environmental issues against the backdrop of the climate crisis. Without innovations, for example in energy production and waste management, the Chinese economy will hardly be able to continue growing. Therefore, one focus of the book is on environmental economic policy. Finally, foreign policy, including the Silk Road Initiative, is examined. The aim of this book is to highlight the above developments. It is aimed at practitioners involved in China business as well as first-year students who want an overview of economic policy institutions and current developments. The content State structure and actors of the economy Current economic development Labour market E-commerce Food, environment and energy policy International Relations The Editor Barbara Darimont is Professor of China Economics at the East Asia Institute of the Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences. Before that, she worked for ten years at the Max Planck Institute for Social Law in Munich, where she set up the China Department with renowned Chinese institutions. This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.

Abstract: Power as a political raw material - and as a decision-making and management tool at the theater -- The specifics of the German theater system -- Power and organization -- Power and abuse at the theater -- Results of the study at a glance -- Structural power and forms of power containment.
Abstract: Structure and power are two defining and interrelated aspects of the German theater business. It is based on the strictly hierarchical organization of 1900 and has undergone hardly any structural changes since then. This not only impairs the innovative capacity of this important institution, but also leads to inappropriately strong power positions of the directors, to conflicts with the ensembles and employees, and hinders the development and renewal of the artistic potentials of this cultural technique. The publication is based on the results of the study 'Art and Power in the Theater' - with 1966 participants the largest study of its kind. The content Power as a decision-making and management tool in the theater The connection between power and organization Power and abuse in the theater Structural power and forms of power containment Results of the study The target groups Students, teachers and researchers in the fields of cultural management, cultural and theater studies, dramaturgy, psychology, sociology and anthropology, employees of management in theaters and other cultural organizations. The author Thomas Schmidt has been a professor and director of the Theater and Orchestra Management program in Frankfurt since 2010. He was managing director of the National Theater Weimar from 2003 to 2013 and visiting professor at Harvard University in 2014. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

Abstract: Pandemics — it seems that it had been the beginning of a new era, after a first shock wave a new normality commenced trying to, repress the complex challenges while living under a new Sword of Damocles. Origins and consequences of the virus had been frequently issued, but only little attention had been paid to structural problems of societies, making it difficult to cope with the exceptional situation. The present book, focusing on the German polity and its structural weakness, analysis the situation in a historical perspective. It is completed by an essayist globalist outlook on the pandemics. The provocative thesis is that the precarity of society is itself a kind of virus, in many ways as dangerous as the Corona virus. The latter one showed the weak – and dangerous – points of the failure of the polity that need urgent and thorough political answers. The Author Peter Herrmann, social philosopher, having worked globally in research and teaching positions in particular on social policy and economics, currently: Research Fellow, Human Rights Centre, Central South University Changsha, PRC.
