Zwei der Frauen halten es fest, während die vierte mit einem Bambusmesser die Operation durchführt. Die Wunde wird nicht behandelt.

Salap verziert einen Ohrpflock, indem er mit dem Schneidezahn eines Nagetieres Verzierungen in den Bambus kratzt. Die Verzierungen bestreicht er mit Hautfett, um die Musterung hervortreten zu lassen. Er steckt den Ohrpflock in sein linkes Ohrläppchen. Während er arbeitet, spielt ein anderer Mann auf einer Maultrommel.
    Abstract: Several boys and men are playing in front of the men's house in Malingdam/Imarin. Salap is decorating an ear peg by scratching decorations in the bamboo with a rodent incisor. He smears dermal fat into the decorations so that the pattern will stand out. He sticks the ear peg into his left ear lobe. While he is working, another man is playing a Jew's harp.

    Abstract: Einige Männer aus Moknerkon bauen eine Holzbrücke über den Fluß Eipomek. Auf beiden Uferseiten werden aus Holzknüppeln Stützunterlagen errichtet. Darauf heben sie 8 etwa 10-14 m lange Baumstämme (Durchmesser etwa 10 cm) und binden sie mit Baumrindenbast fest aneinander. Auf der einen Seite der Brücke befestigen sie ein Geländer aus Stangen.
    Abstract: Several men from Moknerkon build a wooden bridge across the Eipomek River. Supporting substructures are erected on both banks of the stream using logs. Then they lift 8 approximately 10- to 14-m-long tree trunks (diameter approx. 10 cm) onto them and bind them tightly to one another with tree bast. They attach a railing made of poles to one side of the bridge.

    Abstract: Drei Männer der Handwerkerfamilie Pantelakis aus Pyrgos demonstrieren an einer Hauswand die Technik der Kratzputzmalerei (Xista). Weiße Kalkfarbe wird auf den noch feuchten Putz aufgetragen und gleichmäßig verstrichen. Bevor Farbe und Putz trocknen, wird mit Hilfe von Gabeln und Nägeln durch die Kalkschicht hindurch die Oberfläche des Putzes an vorgezeichneten Stellen abgekratzt. Zurück bleibt eine schwarzweiß ornamentierte Fläche.
    Abstract: Three men from Pyrgos, members of the Pantelakis craftsmen family, demonstrate the technique of sgraffito (Xista) on the wall of a house. Whitewash is spread on the moist plaster and brushed evenly over the surface. Before whitewash and plaster dry, the plaster surface, with forks and nails, is scratched through the whitewash in marked places. The result is a black and white ornament on the wall.

    Abstract: Nicht weit von Talim befindet sich im Gartenland des Dorfes eine kleine bewaldete Fläche. Männer und Jungen fällen mit Steinbeilen einige junge Bäume, indem sie die Baumstämme in etwa 50-60 cm Höhe einkerben und zu Fall bringen. Anschließend schlagen sie die Äste ab.
    Abstract: Not far from Talim, there is a small wooded area in the village's garden area. Men and boys cut down several young trees with stone adzes by notching the tree trunks at a height of 50 - 60 cm and causing them to fall. Subsequently they cut off the branches.

    Abstract: In a garden area on a steep slope in Malingdam women and men are working in co-operative effort: Breaking the earth with a digging stick, renewing the terrace steps, pulling out and burning grass, planting sugarcane and banana cuttings, weeding, harvesting taro and sweet potatoes.

Auf diese Weise bleiben die Larven an dem dichten Pflanzenbewuchs hängen und können in Tragenetzen eingesammelt werden. Anschließend ziehen die Mädchen einige Wasserpflanzen hoch und sammeln auch die darunter befindlichen Kleintiere ein.
    Abstract: Girls from Munggona are wading through a pond and splashing up the water with their feet. In this manner the insect larvae in the water get caught in the thick plant growth and can be collected in dip nets. Then the girls lift a number of water plants and also collect the small animals under them.

Zur Behandlung der Wunden wird ein glimmendes Holzstück vor die Nase gehalten. Die Mädchen reagieren bemerkenswert beherrscht auf die schmerzhafte Prozedur.
    Abstract: As it is customary among the Eipo the nasal septums of two girls are pierced with pointed instruments, a bone awl in the first case and a wooden stick in the second. The girls react remarkably calm to the painful procedure.

    Abstract: In Abwesenheit der Männer tragen Frauen ein verendetes Schwein zum Schlachteplatz, zerlegen es mit einem Bambusmesser, sengen die Borsten an, stellen Würste her. Ein zweites Schwein wird gebracht und verarbeitet. Fleisch und Würste werden zusammen mit Gemüse in zwei Erdöfen gegart. Ab und zu erscheinen Männer, die sich wegen Tabuvorschriften im Walde aufhalten, um Ratschläge zu erteilen. Die Frauen beklagen den Verlust der Schweine und singen Klagelieder.
    Abstract: In the absence of men, women carry a dead pig to the cutting place, dissecte it using a bamboo knife, singe the bristles and make sausages. A second pig is brought and processed. Together with vegetable, meat and sausages are cooked in two earth ovens. Men, required to stay in the wood by taboo rules, appear off and on to give advice. The women lament and bewail the death of the pigs.

    Abstract: Im Dorf Dorong starb eine 80jährige Frau, die als Priesterin andere Frauen ausgebildet hat. Nach der Aufbahrung treffen Trauergäste ein. Frauen aus der Verwandtschaft halten Trauerwache und singen Klagelieder. Zwei Priesterinnen führen die Totenzeremonien durch. Am zweiten Tag wird die Tote in einen Einbaumsarg gelegt, der fest verschlossen wird. Am dritten Tag wird sie auf dem Friedhof beerdigt.
    Abstract: In Dorong village, near Tamiang, an eighty-year-old woman has died. She was a priestess (wadian), responsible also for the training of other women. The film presents the exposure of the corpse, the arrival of the mourners, and the ceremonies connected with this event. The ceremonies are performed by two priestesses, one having the function of a teacher. The second day the corpse is laid in the coffin, the third day the burial takes place in the cemetery.

    Abstract: Zwei Männer pflanzen im Gartenland unterhalb des Dorfes Kwarelala Blattgemüse (Abelmoschus manihot). Bevor sie die Setzlinge in das mit einem Pflanzstock erstellte Loch einsetzen, bestreichen sie die Schnittstellen mit Schweinefett und bespucken die Bodenstelle. Sie sagen Zaubersprüche für ein gutes Wachstum und ausreichende Nahrung auf, die auch bewirken sollen, daß die Geisterfrau Motona diesen Ort meidet und die Erdrutsche aufhören.
    Abstract: Two men are planting leafy vegetables (Abelmoschus manihot) in garden land below the village of Kwarelala. Before they set the seedlings into the hole prepared with a planting stick, they smear the cut ends with lard and spit on the soil. They speak incantations for good growth and sufficient food, which should also act to make the ghost woman Monton avoid this place and prevent mudslides.

    Abstract: Ein Haus in Talim wird vom Besitzer und seiner Frau abgerissen und in Gemeinschaftsarbeit wieder aufgebaut. Der Boden wird geebnet, die Hauspfosten werden von Männern in die Erde gerammt und mit Pflanzenfasern miteinander verbunden. Der Fußboden wird eingesetzt und verstärkt, das alte Dach aufgesetzt. Die Feuerstelle wird aus Lehm errichtet, die Fußbodenmatten werden eingelegt und die Wandbretter eingebunden.
    Abstract: A house in Talim is torn down by the owner and his wife and rebuilt in co-operative effort. The ground is levelled, the main posts are rammed into the earth by the men and linked to one another with plant fibres. The floor is put in and reinforced; the old roof is put back on. The hearth is erected using clay; the floor mats are laid in position, and the wall boards are fastened in place.

Die Mädchen tragen in der Rechten eine Schale mit Blüten, die sie zum Abschluß des Tanzes zu den Zuschauern hin werfen.

    Abstract: Vor dem Männerhaus in Malingdam spielen Jungen verschiedenen Alters. Bei dem ersten Spiel bauen sie aus ihren Händen einen Turm, den sie dann zusammenstürzen lassen. Bei dem zweiten Spiel formen sie aus Daumen und Zeigefinger Ringe, die übereinandergelegt eine Röhre ergeben. In diese schlägt ein Mitspieler mit der flachen Hand einen Stein, der ein Tier symbolisiert. Ein anderer Mitspieler muß erraten, in wessen Hand sich der Stein befindet.
    Abstract: Boys of different ages are playing in front of the men's house in Malingdam. In the first game they make a tower with their hands, which they then allow to collapse. In the second game they form rings from their thumbs and index fingers, which form a tube when they are placed one upon the other. In this game one player strikes a stone with the flat of his hand, which symbolises an animal. Another player has to guess in whose hand the stone is located.

Das Mundstück der Röhre wird in einen durch Kauen von Pfefferblättern, Ingwer und salzhaltiger Asche hergestellten, dünnen Brei getaucht. Der Dampf der glimmenden Blätter wird inhaliert.
    Abstract: Bundles of leaves containing salt, called 'Uwa' by the Eipo, (Psychotria; Rubiaceae) are made to smoulder and inserted into a tube made by rolling banana leaves. The tube's mouthpiece is immersed in a thin mush made by chewing pepper leaves, ginger and salty ashes. The steam from the smouldering leaves is inhaled.

    Abstract: Ausschnitt aus einem mehrtägigen Besuchsfest in Munggona (s. Film E 2803). In der Nacht, bevor die Gäste eintreffen, tanzen Männer in Kreisformation und singen dazu. Der Vortänzer löst den Kreis auf, indem er die Tänzer in einer Spiralform in der Mitte zusammenführt. Anschließend führt der letzte Tänzer die Tanzschlange in die Kreisformation zurück. Einige Frauen tanzen am Rande des Dorfplatzes in Reihenformation.
    Abstract: Excerpt from a visiting feast, which lasted several days, in Munggona (see Film E 2803). In the night before the guests arrive, men dance in a circular formation and sing in accompaniment. The leading dancer breaks up the circle by bringing the dancers together in the centre in a spiral shape. Subsequently, the last dancer guides the dance line back into the circular formation. Several women dance at the margin of the village plaza in a row formation.

    Abstract: Mehrere Varianten der spontan entwickelten Tänze. Mädchen üben die Schrittfolge, das Zuwerfen und Fangen des Balles sowie das Singen und Klatschen des Tanzrhythmus. Dem Spiel der Mädchen gesellen sich Frauen hinzu, und es entwickelt sich ein perfekter Spieltanz mit Rhythmusvarianten.
    Abstract: Several variants of a melon-game dance which developed spontaneously are documented. Two girls exercise the game. They attract several adult women who join in, and a perfect melonball dance developes. Women standing behind each other form a circle. One woman holding a melon leaves the circles to perform a variety of figures and finally throws the melon to the woman following her while she returns to the circle of clapping and chanting women. The sequence of events ends with a round dance. The women form a circle and while the group dances a melon passes from one dancer to the other. Each dancer throws the melon backwards over her shoulder to the dancer following her.

Einer von ihnen glättet das Halsstück einer Kalebasse (Lagenaria siceraria) außen mit einem Steinbeil und innen mit einem Holzstab. Um das geschlossene Ende wird ein Ring aus pflanzlichem Material geflochten; das offene Ende der fertigen Peniskalebasse wird mit einer Schnurhalterung versehen.
    Abstract: A number of men are in front of the men's house in Munggona. The are talking and working at various jobs. One of them is smoothing the neck piece of a calabash gourd (Lagenaria siceraria); the exterior with a stone adze and the interior with a wooden rod. A ring is woven around the closed end with plant materials; the open end of the penis gourd is equipped with a support cord.

    Abstract: Zwei verheiratete Männer von etwa 45 bzw. 35 Jahren aus Malingdam nehmen ihre Peniskalebasse ab, um zu zeigen, wie man sie anlegt. Zuerst wird die Kalebasse, deren unteres Ende mit einer Schnurschlinge fixiert wird, durch die man den Hodensack zieht, aufgesteckt. Um das obere Drittel der Kalebasse wird eine Rotanschnur befestigt, die um die Hüfte gelegt wird. Die feste Rotanwicklung wird auf einem breiten Blatt um die Taille gewickelt.
    Abstract: Two married men of approximately 45 and 35 years of age, respectively, from Malingdam, take off their penis gourds to show how they are put on. First, the gourd, whose lower end is attached with a cord sling through which one slips the scrotum, is put on. A rotang cord is attached around the upper third of the gourd; the former is put around the hips. The fixed rotang wrapping is wound around the waist on a broad leaf.

    Abstract: Während einer Initiation trägt ein Mann aus Japanaut Modelliermasse auf einen Schädel auf. Von einem Baum im Wald holt er Baumsaft. Die Modelliermasse mischt er aus Erde, Baumsaft und gebranntem Kalk. Dann befestigt er am Schädel Kauri-Schneckengehäuse, Conus-Schneckenböden und Menschenhaare. Anschließend wird der Schädel mit schwarzer, gelber und roter Farbe bemalt.
    Abstract: During an initiation ceremony a man modells on a skull a mixture of clay. He taps a tree for some tree-sap. The mixture on the skull consists of earth, tree-sap, and burned chalk. Different shells like cowrie shells and conus shells and human hair fixed on the skull. Finally he paints the overmodelled skull with black, yellow and red.

Es malen führende Männer und Künstler allein, zu zweit oder zusammen mit jüngeren.
    Abstract: The film shows three different ways in which the Kwoma employ painting techniques: painting on flat surfaces, i.e. the flattened bases of sago-palm leaf-stems, chip-carved wooden shields and three-dimensional carvings. The painters are respected men and artists, who will be seen working alone, in pairs and with younger men.

    Abstract: Das Eipomek-Tal (West-Irian, Indonesien) wurde 1976 von einem schweren Erdbeben heimgesucht. 10 Jahre später ist das Leben der Eipo gezeichnet von den Folgen dieses Erdbebens und der darauf folgenden Missionierung. Die Kultur der Eipo hat sich wesentlich verändert (Siedlungsanordnung, Religion, Körperschmuck und Kleidung), hat sich aber in anderen Teilen erhalten (Hausbau, Feldbau). Die Akkulturation der Eipo wird sichtbar. Siehe auch Film E 2718.
    Abstract: The Eipomek valley (West Irian, Indonesia) was hit by a heavy earthquake in 1986. Ten years later the life of the Eipos is affected by its consequences and the following missionary work. The Eipo culture basically changed (housing scheme, religion, body decoration and clothes) and partially preserved (house building, field work). The acculturation of the Eipos becomes visible.     Abstract: Einige Bewohner von Malingdam werden beim Haareschneiden beobachtet: Kleine Haarbüschel werden mit den Fingern gefaßt und mit einem scharfkantigen Bambusspan in der Nähe der Kopfhaut abgeschnitten bzw. mit freihändig geführter Rasierklinge in durchgehende Streifen geschnitten. Die Haartracht ist einheitlich: Außer einer kreisförmigen Fläche auf der Schädeldecke wird das Haupthaar abgeschnitten.
    Abstract: A few inhabitants of Malingdam are observed while they cut hair. Small bushels of hair are grasped with the fingers and cut close to the scalp with a sharp-edged bamboo chip. The hairstyle is uniform: Except for a circular area on the top of the head, all the hair is cut off.

    Abstract: Den Höhepunkt des brauchtümlichen Faschingsgeschehens im Salinenort Ebensee bildet der "Fetzenzug". Vornehmlich männliche Teilnehmer, als alte, häßliche, zerlumpte Weiber verkleidet, ziehen, von Herolden, Prinzenpaar, Pritschenmeistern und Blasmusikkapelle begleitet, am Nachmittag des Faschingsmontages durch den Ort. Anschließend an den Umzug lassen die "Fetzen" ihrer Ausgelassenheit in den Straßen, den Wirtshäusern und beim Ball im Rathaus freien Lauf.

    Abstract: Schreittanz der Männer auf dem zentralen Dorfplatz von Pedra Branca, den der Zeremonienleiter des Dorfes, singend und rasselnd, anführt. Mit ihm singt, den Tänzern gegenüberstehend, eine durch ihre Schärpe als "beste Sängerin" gekennzeichnete junge Frau. - Am nächsten Tag findet der gleiche Tanz mit einem anderen Sänger statt.
    Abstract: On the central place of the village the men perform a stepping dance, led by the singing and rattling leader of the ceremonies. He is accompanied by the singing of a young woman, facing the men, distinguished by a scarf as "best singer". - The next day the same dance is performed with a different singer.

    Abstract: In einem Waldstück bei Malingdam halten sich mehrere Männer auf. Uwok, ein führender Mann des Dorfes, kerbt mit seinem Steinbeil einen Baumstamm in Schulter- und Kopfhöhe ein. Zwischen den Einkerbungen sprengt er mit dem Beil Späne aus dem Stamm. Er arbeitet von der oberen Kerbe auf die untere zu und vertieft den Einschnitt an der unteren Kerbe. An dieser Stelle bricht der Stamm durch und fällt.
    Abstract: A number of men are in a piece of woodland near Malingdam. Uwok, a prominent man in the village, is notching a tree trunk at shoulder and head height with his stone adze. He breaks chips out of the trunk between the notches with his adze. He works from the upper notch toward the lower one and deepens the cut at the lower notch. The trunk breaks at this location and falls.

    Abstract: Zwei große, neugebaute Kanus sollen in einem Singfest geweiht werden. Tags zuvor werden die Memorierstäbe für die Liederreihen vorbereitet: aufgesteckte Figuren werden fertiggeschnitzt und bemalt. Die geschmückten Kanus werden auf das Ufer und zum Männerhaus gezogen. Bei dem Fest wechseln auf einer Schlitztrommel geschlagene kultische Rhythmen mit Gesängen. Am Memorierstab wird der Fortgang der Liederreihe deutlich. Wegen eines Großfeuers, bei dem mehrere Wohnhäuser abbrennen, wird das Fest vorzeitig abgebrochen.
    Abstract: The day before the feast sticks for memorizing the name songs are prepared. The decorated canoes are pulled to the shore and up into the men's house. At the feast name songs are presented which relate to the respective clan mythology. A big fire of several houses puts an end to the feast.

    Abstract: Salap, ein Mann aus Malingdam/Imarin, spannt Kettfäden über ein Holzgerät und beginnt zu weben, indem er jedes zweite Fach von Hand öffnet. Die jeweils darauffolgenden Fächer werden durch Einschieben eines Trennstabes in die Kette automatisch vorgebildet. Auf den Arbeitsfaden werden weiße Glasperlen aufgezogen. Dieser wird durch das geöffnete Fach geschoben und zwischen den Kettfäden geordnet. Nach Fertigstellung bindet sich Salap die Stirnbinde um.
    Abstract: Salap, a man from Malingdam/Imarin village, demonstrates the making of a head-band in plait weaving technique. He stretches the warp over a wooden frame and starts weaving, opening every alternate shed by hand. The counter sheds are formed automatically by insertion of a separating stick. Assisted by another man and by boys, Salap strings white glass beads on the working thread, passes it through the open shed and arranges the glass beads between the different warp threads. The result is a woven band with a design of glass beads. Salap works in company with other men engaged in other things. Head-bands of this kind are worn by men as festive ornament.

    Abstract: Spontaneous trance dance which developed around 10 p.m. at Bere and which lasted with pauses till the next morning. The film shows the dancing around the women sitting on the ground clapping the rhythm and singing. The dancers extract the evil by touching the women with the palm. One dancer is repeatedly affected by trance. The expression of his suffering for the good of the group is impressive, particularly during the fits of trance in the early morning. Helpers endeavour by massage, washing his face and chest and giving him water to drink.

    Abstract: Aus einem abendlichen Scherztanz, an dem Männer, Frauen und Kinder teilnehmen, entwickelt sich ein Tranceritual, das bis zum frühen Morgen dauert: Extraktionszauber durch Handauflegen, Zusammenbrechen und Wiedererweckung der Trancetänzer.
    Abstract: Spontaneous trance ritual which developed on April 4th 1972 around 10 p.m. at Bere from a joking dance, in which women and men participated as dancers. The dance changed into a trance dance which lasted with pauses till the next morning. The men dance around the women, who sit on the ground clapping the dance-rhythm with their hands and singing. The dancers touch the women with their palms in an attempt to extract sickness and evil from their bodies. They especially takes care of a woman and her child who is obviosly sick. They kneel down in front of her and touch her while singing. As a precaution other women are also touched. Several dancers are affected by trance and collapse. Women and men attempt to receie them by the aid of smoke, water and massage. The expressions of the men in trance, particularly their suffering and fighting agonies are highly impressive.

    Abstract: The highest-ranking healer (sapori) Yoresiyawe blows the sniffing drug yopo into the nostrils of two men. Then he takes the drug himself and achieves trance. With the help of other healers he instructs first a man who is already healer, and later another one who is not yet initiated. Chanting and dancing the healers carry the spirits and insert them with much pantomimic gesture into the bodies of their pupils. The healers verbalize their experience and visions and engage on dialogues with others.

    Abstract: In der Kleinstadt Hala (Provinz Sind) werden bemalte, glasierte Keramikfliesen nach traditionellen Techniken erzeugt. Der Film dokumentiert den kompletten Produktionsprozeß in den Werkstätten eines Fliesenerzeugers ("kashigar"). Die bunte Baukeramik mit ihren floral-vegetativen Dekormotiven läßt sich an den Fliesenfassaden der Moscheen und Mausoleen des Sind bis ins 16. Jahrhundert zurückverfolgen.
    Abstract: In the small town Hala in the Province of Sind traditional techniques in the manufacturing of painted glazed tiles have been preserved. The documentary film contains all working processes in a tile maker's ("kashigar") workshop. In Sind, the coloured tile decoration with its floral patterns - displayed on the walls of mosques and tombs - can be dated back to the 16th century.

    Abstract: With the help of his companions a man prepares the snuff-drug yopo (epena) while they comment on our equipment. Afterwards the men, who all are already healers (sapori), blow the drug into each other's nostrils. They get into trance, sing, dance, and comment their visions. Amongst others they describe the appearance of ghosts to their companions, who in turn comment on it.

    Abstract: Two men, Yoresiyawe the highest-ranking healer (sapori) and Kasiwe implant spirits into a man named Uraewe, who is already healer, but who wants to achieve perfection. The healers approach Uraewe dancing and singing, carrying the spirits with them and implanting them with pantomimic gestures. After this a man from another village, Kosisiwe, who is aspirant healer, undergoes a similar treatment and instruction. This time Yoresiyawe is assisted by the headman. Finally the aspirant dances a rehearsal hekuramou, watched by the other healers of the village who comment and encourage his performance.

    Abstract: Karl Straub (born 1892) is one of the last painters of clockfaces in the Black Forest. The film shows him during his work, in this way it is possible to duplicate the completion of a clockface. In the beginning the panel gets its priming, then the dail is formed and following the empty spaces are decorated. Typical for clocks from the region around Furtwangen is the rose in the arc, for which decoration Karl Straub devotes most of his attention. Apart from the painting the film also imparts how the paint is used and which tools the painter needs.

Er hält das Holzstück, das auf leicht brennbarem Material liegt, mit den Füßen fest. In zwei Einstellungen wird der Vorgang auch in Zeitdehnung (64 B/s) gezeigt.
    Abstract: In his garden on a low plain below the settlements Uwok, a leading man in Malingdam, makes fire. He presses a split stick with the feet to the ground, passes a rotan string underneath and "saws" until glowing sawdust is dropping on the "tinder" (dried leaves) placed below. After several vain attempts (breaking of the rotan string) Uwok finally succeeds in producing a blaze.

He puts the stick to the beard, stretches it, and pulls off the jammed hair. In this way he contours the whiskers rather well, whereas the rest of the shaving is done less properly. Carelessly Uwok leaves the hair pulled off on the ground.

    Abstract: Die bunt geschmückten Partner sitzen paarweise nebeneinander in einer Hütte; im Hintergrund singen Männer Liebeslieder. Zu Beginn der etwa 5 Minuten dauernden Tänze wiegt der Werbende Oberkörper und Kopf. Dann wendet er sich seiner Partnerin zu, die sich ebenfalls zu wiegen beginnt. Es kommt zu Stirn- und Nasenreiben. Nach zweimaligem Nasenreiben verbeugen sich die Tanzpartner tief parallel zueinander, dann reiben sie wieder zweimal ihre Nasen und so fort in stetem Rhythmus, der nicht von der Musik bestimmt wird.
    Abstract: The courtship dance of the Medlpa contains a stylized nose rubbing and contact of the cheeks. The participants, richly adorned, are sitting in couples side by side in a hut, in the background men are singing love-songs. At the beginning of the dances, which each have a length of about 5 minutes, the man sways his upper body and his head, then he turns to his female partner who also starts to sway. Forehead and nose rubbing take place. Afte a second nose rubbing the partners make a deep bow towards each other, then they rub their noses twice again, and so forth, in a steady rhythm not determined by the music.

Nach 22 Arbeitstagen ist die Arbeit abgeschlossen.
    Abstract: After several years of fallow the garden area below Malingdam is cultivated again. After chopping down the secondary vegetation, the slope is terraced with the digging stick and with the hands. The beds are planted with sweet potato cuttings and taro sprouts. The work is done individually: every man prepares and cultivates "his" plot of ground owned by the community.

    Abstract: Planieren des Bauplatzes, Setzen und Verbinden der Wandpfosten, Einbau des Fußbodens, Errichten eines Erdofens, Anlegen der Feuerstelle im Haus, Einbringen und Verlegen des Fußbodenbelags aus Baumrinde, Errichten der Hüttenwand aus Holzbohlen und Verbinden der Bohlen, Verteilen der im Erdofen gegarten Speisen, Errichten der Dachkonstruktion und Decken des Daches. Der Rundbau mit Satteldach wird während eines Tages (9 Stunden) mit bereitgehaltenem Material in Gemeinschaftsarbeit fertiggestellt.
    Abstract: The bent hut of a family in Malingdam/Imarin is reconstructed with the help of men and boys of the settlement. The new house, a circular building with a saddle-roof, is built with prepared materials in one day, within nine hours. Posts, beams, poles, and boards are only attached by rotan strings. Food cooked in the earth oven is distributed to the helpers.

    Abstract: Uwok, a leading man in Malingdam, cultivates his taro garden at an altitude of 2100 metres: He uproots the weeds, heaps them up around the taro plants (Colocasia esculenta) as green manure, takes up sods of grass with the digging stick, and places them upside-down about the plants. Uwok harvests taro and plants the sprout again. He roasts small taro tubers in the fire for a spontaneous meal.
