    Abstract: Der Film befaßt sich mit den Problemen der Land-Stadt-Migration in China. In Kunming, der Hauptstadt von Yünnan, lebt eine Familie von Matratzenmachern aus der Provinz Hunan. Trotz einer langen handwerklichen Tradition leben sie hier nun als marginalisierte Handwerker. Der Film zeigt ihren sozialen und ökonomischen Alltag, den Prozeß der Matratzenherstellung, aber auch die Geschichte eines kleinen Mädchens, das auf der Straße gefunden und von der Matratzenmacher-Familie aufgenommen wurde.
    Abstract: The film deals with the problem of migrant labour in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan. It portrays a family of cotton-mat makers from Hunan Province. Altough the craft of mat-making has had a long tradition in the family, they are now living as marginalized migrant workers. The film provides an insight into the social and economic everyday life of such workers, and it shows the process of cotton-mat making, but it also tells the story of a new-born baby girl who was found in the streets and has been adopted by this family to give her a home.

    Abstract: Besides the cradle the stile chest is the oldest piece of furniture to be found in farm-houses. Its history can be traced back to the Bronze Age. In the fifties there was a woodworker living at Szuhahuta (North Hungary) who, together with his wife, still knew the old techniques of chest-making. The couple make a stile chest for sale.

Dazu werden insgesamt fünf Farbschichten (erste und zweite Grundierung, Öllasur, Wasserlasur und Klarlack) aufgetragen. Die beiden Lasuren werden mit verschiedenen Maseriergeräten bearbeitet, um einen Eichenholz-Masereffekt zu erzielen.
    Abstract: A small old wall-cabinet gets a new painting imitating oak-grain. Five coats of paint have to be applied: first and second ground coat, oilglaze, water-glaze and clear varnish. Both glazes are treated with several veining-utensils in order obtain an oakwoodgrain effect.

    Abstract: Eine hohe Eiche wird gefällt, abgelängt, mit einer Hebelade verladen und zur Stellmacherei gebracht. Der 5 m lange Stamm wird mit Axt und Breitbeil achtkantig behauen und dann mit Hilfe eines handgetriebenen Pumpenbohrgerätes, das auf einer Gleitbahn vor- und zurückrollt, erst von einem, dann vom anderen Ende her gebohrt, bis die Bohrungen sich in der Mitte treffen. Anschließend werden ca. 2 m am oberen Ende für den Pumpenkolben weiter aufgebohrt.
    Abstract: Boring of an oak-trunk to be used as a pump. A high oaktree is felled, cut to length, loaded on a wagon by means of a lever-chest and taken to the cartwrights-yard. The 5 m long trunk is trimmed octogonal with axe and broad-axe and then bored lengthwise by a handdriven boringdevice (machine), which runs forth and back on a guideway. Boring starts from one end to about half the length of the trunk, then from the other end, until both boreholes meet. Finally the upper two metres of the trunk are rebored for the pumppiston.

    Abstract: Ein Kinder-Gaban, ein Überwurf aus Wolle, wird hergestellt. Während Frau Juana Nunez Balverde die Wolle wäscht und reinigt, kämmt ihr Mann José Sanchez Vera gewaschene Wolle. Juana spinnt diese, während José die Kettfäden schärt und verzettelt. Der Gaban wird auf einem Trittwebstuhl gewoben. Das brochierte Muster wird von José Sanchez Nunez, Sohn von José und Juana, gefertigt. Zum Schluß wäscht Juana die Fransen und verdreht sie.
    Abstract: A Gabial (poncho/scarf) for a child is being made. Juana Nunez Balverde washes and cleans the wool and her husband José Sanchez Vera combs it. Juana spins the wool whilst José prepares the warp. The Gaban is woven on a treadle-loom. The stitched pattern is made by José Sanchez Nunez, José son, together with Juana. Finally Juana washes and knots the fringe.

Im Ringofen läuft das Feuer innerhalb von 8 Tagen einmal rund. In zwei Kammern werden die Rohlinge gesetzt und die gebrannten Ziegeln ausgefahren, in den anderen 12 Kammern vorgewärmt, gebrannt und abgekühlt.
    Abstract: After collecting and extruding the clay, cutting off pieces of the clay column and drying them, the moulded bricks are set in the annular brick-kiln. In the annular brick-kiln the fire circulates once in eight days. The bricks are set in and removed after baking in two chambers, in the other twelve chambers they are heated, baked, and cooled.

    Abstract: Zum traditionellen Bauen im Schwarzwald gehören Schindeldach und Schindelwand. Es sind gewaltige Flächen, die mit einer drei- bis vierfachen sich überlagernden Schindelschicht geschützt werden. Der Film schildert die Herstellung von Holzschindeln. Die Arbeit beginnt damit, daß der Schindelmacher im Wald die geeigneten Bäume aussucht. Gezeigt wird auch die Arbeit des Dachdeckers, der sowohl die ältere Schindelnagelung vorführt wie auch die moderne Preßluftnagelung. Die Handwerker kommentieren selbst ihre Arbeit.
    Abstract: Shingles belong to traditional buildings of the Black Forest. Huge areas of walls and roof are protected with a layer of shingles 3 to 4 deep. The film shows the preparation of wooden shingles, beginning with the work of the shingle maker searching for appropriate trees in the forest. The roofers comment on the traditional and modern methods of nailing shingles.

    Abstract: Die Bedeutung des Bollenhutes als originärer Bestandteil der Schwarzwälder Volkstracht sowie in Werbung, Fremdenverkehr und Karikaturen. Die Hutmacherin Hedwig Kaltenbach erläutert während der Arbeit die einzelnen Tätigkeiten und beschreibt die soziale Funktion des Bollenhutes. Der Lehrer Ansgar Barth erörtert die kulturgeschichtlichen Aspekte. Interviews mit Schwarzwälder Bollenhutträgerinnen und einer Touristin sowie mehrere Bildbeispiele werfen Schlaglichter auf dieses Symbol Schwarzwälder Tracht.
    Abstract: The importance of the "Bollenhut" as an original element of the traditional Black Forest costume as well as in advertising, tourism, and caricature. The hat-maker Hedwig Kaltenbach explains, while working, the different operartions and talks about the social funktion of the "Bollenhut". The teacher Ansgar Barth speaks about its cultural history. Interviews with Black Forest women wearing these traditional hats and with a female tourist as well as exemplifying pictures shed a strong light on this symbol of Black Forest costume.

    Abstract: Foutura Sib talks with Binaté Kambou about her life as a potter. As a small girl she learned to make pots, to crush potsherds and to knead clay. Later she fetched clay together with other women, she made pots for millet gruel, decorated waterpots. As a married woman she decorated her room with many pots, produced pots for brewing beer and took them to the market after firing. In case of damage a diviner has to be consulted. Now, as an old woman, she produces also sacred pots. Today the claypots have to compete with aluminium-pots and plastic tons.

    Abstract: Santa Clara del Cobre ist ein Zentrum handwerklicher Kupferbearbeitung. Noch heute werden, wie in der Kolonialzeit, Kessel aus Kupfer getrieben. Mitte der 40er Jahre begann man außerdem, Kupferplatten und -gefäße vor allem für ein städtisches Publikum zu schmieden. Die Herstellung verschiedener Gefäße zeigen Guadalupe Lucas (Kupferkessel), Pablo Pureco (zisilierte Platten) und Etelberto Ramírez (Blumenvase).     Abstract: Foutura Sib spricht mit Binaté Kambou über ihr Leben als Töpferin. Als kleines Mädchen lernte sie Töpfe machen, Erde zerstoßen und kneten. Später holte sie mit anderen Frauen Ton, fertigte Hirsebreitöpfe in Spiralwulsttechnik, verzierte Wassertöpfe. Als verheiratete Frau richtete sie ihr Zimmer mit zahlreichen Töpfen ein, stellte Bierkochgefäße her und brachte sie nach dem Brennen zum Markt. Geht etwas entzwei, wird der Wahrsager befragt. Jetzt, als alte Frau, stellt sie auch Altartöpfe her. Aluminiumtöpfe und Plastiktonnen stellen heute eine große Konkurrenz dar. Die verschiedenen Gefäße werden in ihrem Gebrauch gezeigt.

    Abstract: In der Imkerei G. Oliva in Solarino bei Syrakus wird noch mit traditionellen Tunnelstöcken aus den Stengeln der Ferulastaude gearbeitet. Zur Verhinderung der Schwarmbildung findet im Frühjahr die "Partitura" statt, die Ablegerbildung, bei der die Völkerzahl verdoppelt wird. - Im September wird Eukalyptushonig geerntet. Aus Honigwabenstampfmasse wird mit der Honigpresse Preßhonig gewonnen. Doch werden Honigwaben auch ausgeschleudert. Aus den Wabenresten wird mit Hilfe der Wachspresse Wachs gewonnen, das heute zur Herstellung von Mittelwänden dient.

Walter Krebs zeigt die handwerklichen Fertigkeiten und Arbeitstechniken des Einsteckreiders: er montiert Messer, indem er Heft und Klinge durch Einharzen oder Einbleien zusammensteckt und ausrichtet.

Walter Krebs shows the abilities and the working techniques of the "Einsteckreider" fitting knives: After a treatment with resin and lead he fixes the blade in the haft and adjusts the knife.     Abstract: Im Mai 1991 wurde in einer spektakulären Ganzteilübertragung ein Tagelöhnerhaus aus der Ortschaft Rösebeck (Kreis Höxter) ins Freilichtmuseum Detmold transportiert. Es geht primär um die Frage, die seit Jahren die Diskussion um die Authenzität der Freilichtmuseen bestimmt: Was bleibt von der Identität eines Hauses und was wandelt sich im musealen Kontext? Welche Probleme treten auf bei dem Versuch, das Tagelöhnerhaus als Beispiel für die Lebensweise ländlicher Unterschichten zu präsentieren?
    Abstract: In May 1991 a day laborers' house was transported completely in a spectacular move from Rösebeck (near Höxter) to the Detmold open air museum. The film asks the question which dominates the discussion about the authenticity of open air museums: what remains from the identity of the house and what changes in the new context of the museum? What problems arise in the attempt to show the living of rural lower classes?

    Abstract: An drei aufeinanderfolgenden Tagen stellt Vicente Tapuyo San Nicolás aus Zapallo Grande mit einer Axt und einer Krummaxt einen Kinder-Einbaum aus dem Holz des Guadaripo-Baums (Ocotea sp.) her. Die Einbäume sind aus dem Alltag der Chachilla und ihrer Nachbarn nicht wegzudenken und werden auf vielfältige Weise benutzt.

    Abstract: Nach einer Einführung über die Landschaft und Dorfanlage wird der Alltag skizziert: Dorfschule, Aussaat am Brandrodungsfeld, Sammeln von Naturgummi, Reisschälen, Reisstampfen, Flechten, Schmiedearbeiten in einer Freilandschmiede, Einkauf im Dorfladen, Fischen, Kochen, Kaffeesortieren und Zubereiten von Betelpriem. Nach einem Unterhaltungstanz der Frauen und einem Kriegstanz eines alten Mannes schließt der Film die Vorstellung des Dorfes mit der Abendstimmung am Fluß.
    Abstract: After a general description of the village follows a sketch of everyday life: the village school, sowing in the slash and burn clearings, collection of latex, winnowing rice, weaving, the open-air blacksmith, the village shop, cooking and the preparation of betel. The film closes with an entertainment dance (women), an old man's war dance and the atmospheric sunset at the river.

    Abstract: Am Tag vor Mariä Himmelfahrt (15. August) werden Blumen und Kräuter gesammelt und in Form eines wagenradgroßen Biedermeierstraußes zusammengebunden, um sie am "Kräuterbüschelestag" in der Kirche während des Gottesdienstes weihen zu lassen. Nach dem Kirchgang werden vor dem Rathaus die Kräuterbüschel von einer Kommission begutachtet und prämiert. Der Brauchablauf wird von dem über 80jährigen pensionierten Stadtgärtner Otto Lohmüller geschildert. Er erklärt auch, welche Kräuter in einem Büschel enthalten sein müssen, sowie ihre Funktion in Heilkunst und Volksglauben.
    Abstract: Flowers and herbs are layed out on the day before Assumption day (15. August) in the form of a gigantic cartwheel, later to be blessed during the church service. Afterwards the various presentations are judged by the retired 90 year old town gardener, Otto Lohmüller, who explains which herbs should be represented as well as their function in healing and folklore.

    Abstract: Im Wirtshaus trifft sich allwöchentlich ein Freundeskreis alter Männer. Man erinnert sich, erzählt sich Neuigkeiten, gelegentlich auch Witze, man singt zusammen. Der Film stellt eingangs drei Stammtisch-Freunde in ihrem alltäglichen Milieu vor: einen Schreiner, einen Besenbinder (der die fachgerechte Herstellung eines Besens demonstriert), einen ehemaligen Kirchendiener. Ein gebürtiger Ostpreuße schildert seine Akkulturation im Schwarzwald. Am Stammtisch werden Erlebnisse aus Krieg, Gefangenschaft und Alltag ausgetauscht; Einstellungen zu Arbeit, Freizeit- und Feierabendgestaltung und zum Heimatbewußtsein einer Altersgruppe werden deutlich.

The everyday life of three of the friends, a joiner, a broom-maker (who demonstrates how to properly make a broom) and an ex-verger. A born East Prussian explains his integration in the Black Forest. In the pub stories are swapped from the war, POW camps, and normal life. Attitudes towards work, holiday, free time and sense of local consciousness.

    Abstract: Am Beispiel der mittlerweile geschlossenen Dorfbrauerei Hohenaschau wird das Spannungsfeld zwischen Tradition und Fortschritt sowie regionaler Identität und Folklorisierung einer Region beleuchtet. Die Brauerei bot wie vielen anderen Dorfbewohnern auch Paul Wörndl einen sicher geglaubten Arbeitsplatz. Bereits sein Großvater war dort Biersieder. Diese Tradition, die Vernetzung der Brauerei mit der Umgebung und die Probleme zunehmender Fremdbestimmung in dieser vom Tourismus geprägten Region sind Thema des Films.
    Abstract: The film illustrates the area of conflict between tradition and progress, between regional identity and touristic folklore showing the example of a village brewery which was closed down since then.

    Abstract: Die Weberinnen von Ahuiran stellen mit Rückengürtelwebgeräten schwarzblaue Rebozos und weiße Tücher her. Besonders wenn die Ehemänner abwesend sind, sind sie auf den Verdienst aus ihrem Handwerk angewiesen. Die finanzielle Lage der Weberinnen wie auch der Käuferinnen führte dazu, daß statt der Baumwolle immer mehr Acrylwolle benutzt wird. Die Frauen arbeiten oft in Gemeinschaft und unterhalten sich dabei. Sie nehmen die Hilfe ihrer Töchter in Anspruch, die so das Handwerk nach und nach erlernen. Verkauft werden die Rebozos in dem nahen Marktort Paracho.

    Abstract: Haanglireh, der 52jährige Dorfschmied von Padua, und sein Helfer schmieden in etwa 3stündiger Arbeit ein ca. 50 cm langes Haumesser: Schmieden und Härten der Klinge, Schleifen der Schneide und Schnitzen des Griffes. Der 〈i〉parang〈/i〉, der im Alltag als Arbeitswerkzeug dient, wird mit Hilfe einer Schnur um die Taille gebunden.
    Abstract: Haanglireh, the 52-year-old village smith of Padua, and his assistant shape a hewing knife about 50 centimetres long. The work takes three hours and proceeds in the following stages: forging and tempering the blade, grinding the edge, and carving the handle. The 〈i〉parang〈/i〉, used as a tool in everyday life, is attached to a cord about the waist.

    Abstract: Im Film werden ehemalige klein- und mittelbäuerliche Familien vorgestellt, die vor Jahren in der ehemaligen DDR durch Enteignung ihr Land verloren haben. Heute bietet es ihnen keine Perspektive mehr, da sich die Situation in der Landwirtschaft erheblich verändert hat. Es bleibt gerade Zeit, die Scherben zusammenzukehren, um den Nachfolgern ein geordnetes Feld zu hinterlassen.
    Abstract: The film introduces farmer families who were dispossessed of their land in the former GDR. Today it provides no perspective since the situation in agriculture massively changed. There's only time to clean up the shards for the successors.

    Abstract: White kerchiefs and dark blue rebozos, made on belt looms, are the main products of the weavers of Ahuiran. Especially during the absence of their husbands, the weavers are dependent on weaving for their income, which has led to the introduction of cheap acrylic wool, helping their sales in the nearby market town of Paracho. The women's work is the social centre of the community and includes their daughters. Thus traditions are passed on.

    Abstract: Nagybörzsöny/Deutschpilsen liegt nördlich von Budapest und gilt als deutsche Siedlung. Deutsche Bergleute bauten hier seit dem 13. Jh. Gold und Silber ab. Nach Aufgabe des Bergbaus im 18. Jh. und Zerfall der Weinbaukultur im 19. Jh. geriet das Dorf in wirtschaftliche Isolation. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg ging der Gebrauch der deutschen Sprache stark zurück. Der Film zeigt Bauten der früheren Weinbaukultur, die Kirchen, die zwei Heimatmuseen, eine Köhlerei im Walde und führt durch Gespräche und Erinnerungen zum Sprachgebrauch und zur Problematik der deutschen Muttersprache. Organisierte Pflege der Tradition wird in Szenen über eine Probe des Frauenchores und der deutschen Tanzgruppe vorgestellt.
    Abstract: Nagybörzsöny/German Pilsen is located the north of Budapest and is considered to be a German settlement. German miners have mined gold and silver there since the 13th century. After mining was abandoned in the 18th century and decline of viniculture in the 19th century, the village fell into economic isolation. After World War II the use of the German language declined. The film shows buildings from the former wine-growing culture, the churches, the two local history museums, a charcoal plant in the forest, and then proceeds to language use and to the problems of the German mother tongue via discussions and reminiscences. Organised cultivation of this tradition is presented in scenes on a rehearsal of the women's choir and of the German dance group.

    Abstract: Durch Anbau, Verarbeitung und Vermarktung von Kraut ist Vecsés landesweit als wohlhabendes Dorf bekannt. Der Film stellt die Frage der Identität der deutschen Bewohner des Dorfes. Hierbei werden verschiedene Lebenssituationen gezeigt: Verarbeitung von Kraut, Vermarktung in Budapest, Verarbeitung von Weintrauben für den Eigenbedarf, die LPG als Wirtschaftsfaktor und Kulturträger, Pflege der Tradition in der Tanzgruppe, Deutschunterricht in der Schule und eine deutsche Hochzeit. Durch Interviews wird das Bild abgerundet.
    Abstract: The planting, processing and marketing of cabbage has made the village Vecsés well-known as comfortably-off. The film frames the question as to the identity of the villagers - and includes various everyday situations: making sauerkraut, market day in Budapest, wine-making, the collective as the centre of economy and culture, traditional dances, German lessons at school and German weddings.     Abstract: Dokumentiert wird die traditionelle, manuelle Ausarbeitung eines Werkstückes. Nach den Schablonen des Wiederaufbaus nach 1945 (Burgtheater) wird die Herstellung eines Gesimsstückes mit Wiederkehr aus Mannersdorfer Leithakalk, der im 19. Jahrhundert für die Bauten der Wiener Ringstraße überragende Bedeutung erlangt hat, nachvollzogen. Gleichzeitig bietet der Film ein Porträt des Steinmetzmeisters Friedrich Opferkuh, der aus seiner langen Berufserfahrung in seinem Heimatort Mannersdorf am Leithagebirge eine international beachtete, umfangreiche Sammlung von historischem Werkzeug, Materialien, Bearbeitungsspuren und damit zusammenhängenden Technologien aufgebaut hat. On the other hand the movie draws a portrait of the master mason Friedrich Opferkuh who out of his long professional experience has built up an internationally recognized, extensive collection of historic tools, workmanship's traces, material and technologies in his home village Mannersdorf am Leithagebirge.
    Abstract: The traditional craftmanlike finishing of dressed stone is documented. Out of a special regional limestone (Mannersdorfer Leithakalk) which was widely used for the buildings of Vienna's Ringstrasse (the most magnificent street in 19th century Vienna), a cornice stone's remake after stencels of the post World War II rebuilding program is demonstrated.

    Abstract: Anfertigung von einfachem Kinderspielzeug, das im Frühling von viehhütenden Kindern zum Zeitvertreib hergestellt wird. Alle Schritte der Erzeugung und des Gebrauchs von Maipfeiferl, Rindenoboe und Hollerbüchse vom Aussuchen des geeigneten Zweiges bis zum Versuch, dem Instrument einen Ton zu entlocken. Ein Beispiel für nichtmusikalisch verwendetes Spielzeug: das Zusammenbinden eines "Zitterwagens".
    Abstract: This film shows how simple toys and musical instruments were once made by children tending cattle in springtime. Every step of the preparation and use of the "Maipfeiferl" (= may whistle), "Rindenoboe" (= willow-bark oboe), "Hollerbüchse" (= elder air-pistol) is demonstrated - from the selection of suitable tree boughs to the attempts to elicit a tone (or noise) from the musical instrument. An example of the building of a non-instrumental toy, the "Zitterwagerl" (= vibrating wagon), is also shown. In the course of the film the demonstrator Julius Sorger explains why now one can no longer observe children building those toys.

Es entsteht der Kopf eines Donald Duck, dessen beweglicher Unterschnabel mit einer Schnur gegen den oberen Teil geschlagen werden kann, was ein "schnapperndes" Geräusch hervorruft. Der Schnitzer kommentiert den Film selbst. (Vgl. Film E 3045 und E 3047).

A "Krapfenschnapper" consists of a wooden head of an animal or a man, attached on a stick. The moveable lower jaw can be pulled with a string and beats on the upper part of the head which produces a ratting noise of a special frequence. A separate movie was produced concerning the custom of "Krapfenschnappern". This film shows the development of the work of the sculptor from the raw wooden block to the finished product of a "Krapfenschnapper". The work for one "Krapfenschnapper" is normally done in one day.     Abstract: Dokumentiert wird die traditionelle, manuelle Ausarbeitung eines Werkstückes. Nach den Schablonen des Wiederaufbaus nach 1945 (Burgtheater) wird die Herstellung eines Gesimsstückes mit Wiederkehr aus Mannersdorfer Leithakalk, der im 19. Jahrhundert für die Bauten der Wiener Ringstraße überragende Bedeutung erlangt hat, nachvollzogen. Gleichzeitig bietet der Film ein Porträt des Steinmetzmeisters Friedrich Opferkuh, der aus seiner langen Berufserfahrung in seinem Heimatort Mannersdorf am Leithagebirge eine international beachtete, umfangreiche Sammlung von historischem Werkzeug, Materialien, Bearbeitungsspuren und damit zusammenhängenden Technologien aufgebaut hat. On the other hand the movie draws a portrait of the master mason Friedrich Opferkuh who out of his long professional experience has built up an internationally recognized, extensive collection of historic tools, workmanship's traces, material and technologies in his home village Mannersdorf am Leithagebirge.
    Abstract: The traditional craftmanlike finishing of dressed stone is documented. Out of a special regional limestone (Mannersdorfer Leithakalk) which was widely used for the buildings of Vienna's Ringstrasse (the most magnificent street in 19th century Vienna), a cornice stone's remake after stencels of the post World War II rebuilding program is demonstrated.

    Abstract: Anhand von historischen Stuckmarmorarbeiten in der Kartause Mauerbach in Niederösterreich werden verschiedene Aufgaben bei der Erhaltung und Restaurierung von Stuckmarmor gezeigt. Der Stukkateur, Alois Jarosch, führt die einzelnen Arbeitsvorgänge wie Reinigen, Entfernen von Anstrichen, Ergänzung von Fehlstellen, die Hinterfüllung und letztlich die Neuherstellung vor allem mit seinen Händen und speziellen Werkzeugen vor. The stuccoist demonstrates the different phases like cleaning, removal of later layers of paint, addition of missing parts, refil of cavities under the surface and at least the remake of stucco marble with much detail given to the handwork and the tools in the various phases and stages of production.
    Abstract: The different tasks and problems rising when conserving and restoring stucco marble are shown by the example of recent restorations of stucco marble decorations in the historic carthusian monastery of Mauerbach. Since all measures concerning conservation and restauration are based upon the knowledge of how this craft was accomplished there is ample space dedicated to this topic.

    Abstract: On a vertical loom the threads of yak hair are stretched in a double-rowed warp, the dividing staffs are inserted, the heddle staff is twisted in and fixed. By an alternating use of various self-coloured weft threads a triped pattern is woven. Later the warp shiner is inserted, the warp is pulled and stretched again. When the weaving is finished, the loops of the warp are untied from the frame. The textile is cut up in the middle, resulting in two rugs.

    Abstract: Frisch gesammelte Kuhfladen werden durchgeknetet und zu einer Kugel geformt. Die Masse wird über der Wölbung eines umgekehrten und mit Asche eingestäubten Tonkruges auf eine gleichmäßig dünne Wandstärke gebracht und mit den Händen glattgestrichen. Nach mehrtägigem Trocknen wird dieser Schalenanfang von der Form gelöst und durch aufgesetzte Wülste vergrößert. Schließlich wird eine einfache Randverzierung angebracht.
    Abstract: Inside a farmyard cow dung is collected, kneaded and worked into a spherical shape. The mass, placed over the top of an inverted clay jug surfaced with ash, is given an even thickness and smoothed out by hand. After drying for several days this rudimentary vessel is removed from its mould and enlarged by the addition of wads. Finally, the rim is decorated in a simple manner.

    Abstract: Ein Sandalenmacher weicht ein Stück Rinderhaut in Wasser ein und vergräbt sie über Nacht in der Erde. Am nächsten Tag klopft er sie mit einem Stein aus, zerschneidet sie in zwei Sohlenstücke und zwei lange Riemen. Unter häufigem Maßnehmen an den eigenen Füßen fertigt er die Sandalen an, indem er den Riemen durch die Seitenteile und die Spitze des Sohlenstückes zieht. Die Außenseite der Rinderhaut bildet das Innere der Sandalen.
    Abstract: A sandal maker soaks a piece of neat's skin in water and buries it overnight in the ground. The next day he pounds it with a stone, cuts out two soles and two long thongs and, taking his own feet's measurements, attaches the thongs to the soles.

    Abstract: The flood threatened bridge is partly torn down and built up again by mutual assistance of the men of the village. On one of the river banks the pole has to be newly assembled. Beams are used to build up the scaffolding. Stones and twigs are used to fill the frame-work. Owing to this the beams, overlapping each other with the tips, are able to over-bridge the river. The construction can then be connected by four beams to the corresponding ones on the other bank. After the beams have been secured by planks the bridge is ready for use.

    Abstract: Das aus einem Termitenbau stammende Tonmaterial wird von zwei Frauen gemahlen und mit Wasser angemischt. In einer kleinen Bodenmulde formt jede Töpferin eine Grundschale, auf die konzentrische Tonwülste nacheinander aufgesetzt und in der Kuhle dünngeklopft werden. Nach dem Trocknen der so geformten Krüge werden sie, mit getrockneten Kuhfladen bedeckt, in einer Grube gebrannt.
    Abstract: Clay from a termite-hill is ground by two women and mixed with water. In a small ground-trough each of the women potters forms a basic vessel shape onto which concentric clay wads are placed one after another and, in the trough, are beaten out. Once they have been shaped in this way and allowed to dry, the jugs are covered with dried cow's dung and fired.

    Abstract: Setting up a horizontal llom with two heddles. Stretching a double warp by winding figures of eight. Attaching the warp threads to the heddles and fixing the heddles by means of drawcords to both arms of a lever-like longitudinal rod. By alternate raising and lowering the shed is formed. Light-coloured, red and black woollen threads are inserted. The result is a weft-faced rib weave with horizontal stripes. The finished carpet is cut from the loom and the loom is removed.

    Abstract: Matjemosh, ein etwa 30jähriger Holzschnitzer aus Amanamkai, fällt einen Baum im Busch, schneidet ein Stück davon ab und fährt es in seinem Einbaum ins Dorf. Dort bohrt er mit einem Grabstock ein Loch durch den Stamm und erweitert es mit brennenden Holzspänen. Außen wird der Stamm mit einer Axt in Sanduhrform gestaltet. Der geschnitzte Griff stellt eine Gottesanbeterin dar.
    Abstract: The woodcarver Matjemosh is shown cutting a log from a tree and drilling a hole through it with a digging stick. WIth chips of burning wood the hole is widened and shaped like an hourglass. The outside, too, is fashioned like an hourglass. This, however, is done with the help of an axe and a planing iron. The handle is carved with a small chisel and a knife to represent a praying mantis (wènèt), a sacred insect in Asmat iconography symbolizing the ancestor-headhunter.

    Abstract: Ein Junge formt aus dem mit Wasser versetzten, tonigen Material eines Termitenhügels in Spiralwulsttechnik eine kleine Kugelflöte. Der obere Rand wird ein wenig nach innen eingedrückt, so daß die Öffnung kleiner wird. Mit einem starken Halm bohrt er 2 cm unterhalb der Öffnung zwei kleine Löcher in den Tonkörper im Abstand von etwa 2 cm zueinander und probiert sein Instrument aus.
    Abstract: A boy coils clay from a termite hill making a little ball-shaped flute. With a strong straw he pierces two holes 2 cm apart and then plays his instrument.

    Abstract: A man carves a relief design on the outer surface of a piece of bamboo. His tools are small chisel made from a large iron nail and a piece of stone serving as a hammer. His technique is shown in detail. After the signal horn is finished the carver shows it to another man who carefully judges the quality of the piece of work.

    Abstract: Shows the procedures involved in producing a box-like basket from palm leaf veins. A Fellahin in the province of Beni Suef cuts branches from a palm tree, and the branches are taken by camel to the work area. The stems and veins are stripped of leaf material, cut into suitable pieces, and worked together in order to form a basket. Recording speed 16 fps, projection speed 18 fps.

    Abstract: Eine junge Frau holt sich aus dem Busch mit Hilfe eines Spatens und einer Kniestielaxt eine Baumwurzel (Securidaca longe pedunculata) und einen Ast (Piliastigma reticulatum). Mit einem Stein klopft sie die Rindenbastschicht vom Holz ab, entfernt die äußere Rinde und schneidet mit einem scharfen Stein die Baststücke zu zwei Durchziehschurzen zurecht, die sie anschließend anprobiert. Sie zieht sie nacheinander von hinten zwischen den Beinen durch und verknüpft sie vorn und hinten mit der Perlenkette, die sie um die Hüften trägt.

Beim Weben führt er abwechselnd ein weißes und ein rotes Wollknäuel durch das aus weißen Kettfäden gebildete Fach und schlägt diese Schüsse mit der Weblade an, wobei er die zwei Schäfte mit Hilfe von zwei Holztritten wechselt. Er webt eine weiße Decke mit rotem Dreiecksmuster in Leinwandbindung.

    Abstract: In einem tibetischen Flüchtingslager in Katmandu stellen ein Teppichknüpfer und ein Mädchen auf einem vertikalen Litzenstabwebgerät einen Wollteppich mit Blumenmuster her: Schären der Kette aus Baumwolle, fortlaufendes Knüpfen mit Ghiordes- und Senneh-Schlingen, Aufschneiden der Schlingenreihe, Scheren und Bürsten.
    Abstract: A Tibetan refugee rug-weaver stretches the cotton warp on a vertical heddle loom, placed horizontally on the floor, and fixes the heddle rod. On the erected loom he and a girl insert the coloured threads in rows upon a stick. They fasten each row of knots by weft-threads and then cut the loops of the rows. The woven flower pattern cannot fully be realized until the finished rug has been sheared.

    Abstract: Ein Schmied formt aus Wachs das Modell einer kleinen Gazelle, umkleidet es mit Lehm und versieht es mit einer Ausgußtülle. Er härtet die Lehmform im Feuer und schmilzt dabei das Wachs aus. Gußform und ein mit Messingstücken gefüllter Tonbehälter werden miteinander verbunden. Das im Holzkohlenfeuer geschmolzene Messing fließt durch Umkippen in die Gußform, die nach Erkalten zerschlagen wird. Anschließend wird die Figur befeilt und poliert.
    Abstract: In order to make a brass reproduction of an animal a wax model is prepared which, having been covered with clay, is melted and poured out. A clay vessel filled with pieces of brass is now secured to the mould. The whole is heated and then so tipped that the molten brass flows into the mould. The clay having been knocked off the brass figure is then filed and polished.

    Abstract: Buduma-Männer bauen auf Bestellung einen großen (Länge 110 cm, Breite 80 cm), umgekehrt wappenförmigen Schild mit Randwulst und gerader Unterkante aus leichtem Ambatschholz. Die konvex gebogenen Bretter, die mit einer Lanze zurechtgeschnitten wurden, werden mit spitzen Holzstäbchen verbunden, verschnürt und mit Kuhhaut überspannt. Auf der Rückseite befestigt man einen Holzgriff.
    Abstract: Buduma men make an order from light ambadj-wood (Aeschynomene elaphroxylon) a large triangular shield (length: 110 cm, width: 80 cm) with curved sides bound with a roll and a straight lower edge. The convex boards, trimmed with a lance, are joined together with small pointed sticks, strung together and covered with cow skin. A wooden handle is fixed to the back of the shield.

    Abstract: In Bol am Ostufer des Tschadsees schmilzt ein Schmied acht von einem Auftraggeber mitgebrachte Maria-Theresien-Taler zu zwei kleinen Silberbarren um. Aus dem einen formt er auf dem Amboß mit einem Schlegel einen spindelförmigen Halsschmuck mit spiraligen Windungen. Aus dem zweiten fertigt er einen dicken Ring als Haarschmuck. Die fertigen Stücke erhalten in kochendem Wasser mit Kräutern einen hellen Glanz.

On the anvil he then forges one of the ingots with an iron mallet into a spindle-shaped spiral necklace and the other into a head ornament consisting of one thick ring. The finished objects are put in boiling water added with herbs to make them brilliant.

    Abstract: Mehrere Männer und zwei Frauen dokumentieren in einer viertägigen Arbeit den gesamten Prozeß der Sagogewinnung: Fällen der Sagopalme, Ablösen der Rinde und Aushämmern des Marks, Bau der Auswaschstelle, Auswaschen des Sagomarks und Konservieren der in Blätterbündel verpackten Sagostärke im Feuer.
    Abstract: In contrast to the highlands on this island the eastern coast of Sewataitai Bay is densely populated with sago palm trees that have been planted or have just grown wild. Here the entire process of sago production is shown: palm trees are felled, the bark is peeled off, and the sago pulp is extracted and fired in leaf bundles.

Den mit Kokosnußsaft eingeriebenen Kamm schwenkt er über einem schwelenden Feuer. Dann kämmt er sich und steckt sich den Kamm als Schmuck ins Haar.

    Abstract: Aus getrockneten Blattfiedern der Buriti-Palme stellt ein Mann auf Bestellung eine Kokrit-Maske her: Er flicht Gesichts- und Rückenteil, fällt eine Buriti-Palme, schlägt junge Blattschößlinge ab, drillt aus Blattstreifen Schnüre, vernäht Gesichts- und Rückenteil mit der Tragstange, knüpft den Maskenrock und vernäht ihn mit dem Kopfteil, macht Probeschritte mit der Maske und färbt einen Streifen des Maskengeflechtes rot.
    Abstract: A member of the Kraho tribe fashions a mask from palm leaf material, working first on the facial portion. When the mask and its leaflet dress are finished, a sample dance is performed and the mask is painted.

Aus dem Barren zieht er Draht (Durchmesser etwa 0,35 mm), zwirnt diesen und formt daraus Ringe und Rosetten. Diese lötet er auf eine Platte, die er aus Silberblech ausgeschnitten hat.

Auswaiden und Zerlegen der Beute. Frauen bereiten und verteilen Fleisch. Alle brechen mit Gerät und Beute auf. Klotzrennen der männlichen Jugend.
