    Abstract: Dao Yaodong alias "Mr. Cool" ist ein junger Huayao Dai aus dem Kreis Xinping in der Provinz Yunnan. Modernisierung und Medien, insbesondere Fernsehen und Video, aber auch die neue Infrastruktur für die Arbeiter in der nahe gelegenen Zuckerfabrik lassen neue Visionen entstehen. Während sich die Alten auf vergangene Tugenden berufen, ist "Mr. Cool" dabei, sein bäuerliches Leben aufzugeben, so wie es sein älterer Bruder getan hat.
    Abstract: Dao Yaodong alias Mr. Cool is a young Huayao Dai (Thai) living in Xinping County, Yunnan Province. Modernisation and the media, especially television and VCDs, as well as the infrastructure for the workers of the sugar cane factory nearby his village have resulted in new visions. While the elders are recalling past virtues, Mr. Cool is preparing to leave his life as a farmer, like his elder brother did.

    Abstract: The film focuses on a Miao (Meng, Mhong or Hmong) community and their children living in the suburbs of Kunming City. As their parents work as shoe polishers in the provincial capital of Yunnan, the second generation of migrants from neighbouring Guizhou Province grows up in an environment that requires some rituals and customs as protection.

    Abstract: The income gap between rural and urban communities is extreme, and in Yunnan Province causes growing migration to its capital Kunming. With their home-made pushcarts street peddlers are considered a threat to the city's image building. Constantly on the run, the peddlers themselves would prefer clear regulations allowing a space for them to sell their food, and have an income.

    Abstract: Raghvendra Chand Singh and Tejendra Tamraker travel to Germany for the first time in their lives. They visit a farm near Göttingen to explore modern-day dairy-farming. They capture the daily routines of their hosts on camera, trying to understand the latter's attitude towards their livestock. Being from India they are used to quite different notions of how one should think of and deal with cows.

Danach schlagen die zwei Männer Maso und Tambeimeri auf einer im Männerhaus stehenden Schlitztrommel den kultischen Rhythmus des Fisches kaminsamba. Im zweiten Teil des Filmes erzählt Kandem eine Mythe, die mit Kopfjagd und Kopfjagdtrompete in Verbindung steht. Die Mythe handelt von den Frauen, die ihre Männer verlassen. Ein junger Mann demonstriert anschließend das Spiel auf einer alten Kopfjagdtrompete.
    Abstract: Kandem, one of the elder men of the village Palimbei, tells the myth about a slit gong which was important in the local history. The two men Maso and Tambeimeri play the rhythm of the fish kaminsamba on a slit gong. In the second part of the film Kandem tells a myth about women who left their husbands, the myth being related to headhunting and trumpet. Finally a young man blows the wooden trumpet.

    Abstract: Nachdem eine Frau, die verbotene Dinge der Militärgesellschaft Manjong gesehen hat, erkrankt ist, wird eine rituelle Reinigung durchgeführt: In dem für die Frauen verbotenen Manjong-Haus wird eine Medizin hergestellt, mit der Frauen und Kinder vor dem Haus behandelt werden.
    Abstract: After a woman has fallen ill as a result of having seen forbidden objects belonging to the military society Manjong, a ritual purification has become necessary. The first part of the ritual, the preparing of the medicine, takes place in the Manjong-house which is forbidden to women, the actual purification then is done in the forecourt.

    Abstract: Bei Sonnenaufgang bringt eine Gruppe Diviner den Ahnengeistern ein Opfer in Gestalt einer symbolischen Mahlzeit am Fluß dar. Nach der Opferzeremonie berichten die Diviner einzeln dem Oberdiviner über den Verlauf der Handlung. Anschließend tanzen sie gemeinsam mit den anwesenden Zuschauern.
    Abstract: At sunrise a group of diviners sacrifices a symbolic meal for the ancestor's spirits at the river. After the sacrificial ceremony each diviner tells the superior diviner about the course of the action. Finally, they dance together with the spectators.

    Abstract: How closely linked the various domains of a planting culture are in daily life is demonstrated by means of examples from the activities of a leading Kwoma, Yessomari, who comes from the village of Meno-Saserman in the Washkuk Hills (Ambunti District, East Sepik Province). The film largely follows the planting cycle, from clearing the land (work done co-opertively by the planter, other men from his close cricle of friends and relations, and women) and burning the stubble through the digging of planting holes (done co-operatively by a large group of men), planting the yams, tying up and tending the creepers (the planter's three specific activities) to harvesting the crop. In between, glimpses are given of other sectors of male responsibility, like carving a decorated beam for a men's house, preparing a pandanus soup, extracting sago starch, making and decorating a piece of ceremonial pottery and painting a chip-carved shield. The film closes with a look at a harvest festival, which women with shields made of decorated net bags also take part in, dancing in front of the men's house.

    Abstract: Nach vorbereitenden Opfern in dem Andachtsraum wirft ein junger Mann zwei Orakelhölzer, die dem Orakel erst ein positives (wie hier), negatives oder neutrales Vorzeichen verleihen. Dann wirft er aus einem zylindrischen Bambusbehälter ein beziffertes Bambusstäbchen heraus. Ein auf die Orakelinterpretation spezialisierter Mönch liest aus dem Losbüchlein den Text vor, der für das entsprechende Orakelstäbchen bestimmt ist.
    Abstract: The film shows a method of divination by drawing a lot in form of a numbered bamboo stick, shaken out of a cylindrical bamboo container filled with many similar sticks. In order to give a positive, negative, or neutral value to this oracle, the two halves of a split bamboo sprout-the "oracle chips" - are thrown like dice, their respective position specifying the oracle's answer. The final details of the answer can be read from a special interpretation booklet.

    Abstract: Ein in ganz Ladakh bekannter Orakelpriester versetzt sich in Trance und behandelt einen älteren Mann mit einem Beinleiden. Diagnose und Behandlungsmethode liest er von einem Trommelorakel ab. Mit einem Röhrchen saugt er Krankheitsstoffe aus dem Bauch des Patienten. Anschließend wird er von einer jungen Europäerin wegen Magenbeschwerden konsultiert. Schließlich erwacht er aus der Trance.
    Abstract: A oracle priest, who is well known in all of Ladakh, sets himself in a trance and treats an old man with a leg complaint. He reads the diagnosis and treatment method from a drum oracle. He sucks morbid matter out of the patient's abdomen with a small tube. Subsequently, he is consulted by a young European woman because of stomach complaints. Finally, he awakes from his trance.

He then spreads it with latex, paints it with charcoal and red ochre, and decorates it with feathers. Several people participate in the work. The mum is worn by men after puberty and put on for dance festivals.

    Abstract: Im Dorf Meno wird aus dem Saft der Pandanusfruchtkerne, aus Gemüse, Bananen, Sagostärke und Kokosfruchtfleisch in Tontöpfen eine verdickte Suppe gekocht. Die anfallenden Arbeiten bei der Zubereitung werden aus religiösen Gründen zwischen Mann und Frau aufgeteilt. Die Suppe wird vor allem jüngeren Männern vorgesetzt, die sich am Bau eines neuen Männerhauses beteiligt haben.
    Abstract: Using a thematically consistent example from the village of Meno in the Washkuk Hills, the film shows how the red pandanus pulp (Pandanus conoïdeus), vegetables, bananas, sago starch and coconut pulp are prepared to make a thick soup of porridge-like consistency. The cooking is done in clay pots, most of which the women have either made themselves or which have been received from other Kwoma as part of a ritual payment. For religious reasons, the preparation of the soup is divided up between husbands and wives. The soup is not meant to be consumed by members of the households; it will be served to a group of mainly young men who have helped to build a new men's house.

    Abstract: Auf dem Dorfplatz von Malingdam/Imarin, wo sich die Männer aufhalten, stellt ein Mann aus Kalzitplatten durch Ritzen mit Steinsplittern eine Nasenstabrohform her. Als die Rohform zerbricht, arbeitet er an einer neuen, die er anschließend am Bach naß schleift und poliert. Um ihn herum finden andere Aktivitäten statt: Flechten, Faserherstellung, Gesichtsbemalung, Körperreinigung, Haarscheren, Maultrommelspiel, Gesang usw.
    Abstract: A man is sitting on the village ground, the meeting place of men. Using chips of broken stones he carves a nose sticks out of a piece of calcite stone. The calcite breaks and he carves another one. Afterwards he grinds and polishes it at the streamlet. Around him the other men are busy with plaiting, making fibres, face painting, body cleaning, hairshearing, playing a jew's harp, singing, etc.

Auf dem Versammlungsplatz der Männer werden auch andere Arbeiten verrichtet: Weben eines Stirnbandes, Schnitzen einer Pfeilspitze usw. Plötzlich fängt ein Haus an zu brennen. Der Brand wird gelöscht, der Schaden gleich behoben.
    Abstract: Near the men's house of the hamlet of Imarin a lot of people help in the rebuilding of a family house. On the meeting place of men different kinds of work are done: weaving a forehead band, carving an arrow tip, etc. Suddenly a house has caught fire. The flames are put out, the damage is immediately repaired.

    Abstract: Auf dem Grundstück eines Wahrsagers in Dimbasa wird die Endphase der Initiation einer Divinerin festlich begangen: Nach dem Anrufen der Ahnen durch die Lehrerin wird eine Medizin schaumig geschlagen. Die Novizin nimmt etwas Schaum zu sich und wird mit den Insignien der Divinerin geschmückt. Während der Zeremonie werden wiederholt Tänze aufgeführt.

Ein Schwein wird geschlachtet, enthaart, ausgenommen, gereinigt und mit verschiedenen Gemüsen auf die Blätter gelegt. Das Ganze wird mit Blättern und Erde zugedeckt und ca. 2 Stunden gedämpft.
    Abstract: In the village Tefarerii lava stones are heated in a pit (diameter 1m, depth 0,5 m). The glowing stones are covered with leaves. A pig is slaughtered, gutted and cleaned and layed on the leaves together with different vegetables. The whole thing is covered with leaves and earth and stewed for about 2 hours.

Anschließend bringt die initiierte Frau die Medizin zum Schäumen als Zeichen für ihre neuen Fähigkeiten. Die Zeremonie wurde für die Filmaufnahmen wiederholt.
    Abstract: A couple of diviners perform the ceremony of initiation of a young femal herbalist: songs of the participants in praise of the ancestral spirits; invocation of the ancestral spirits by the diviner; producing froth and smearing the initiate; ritual killing of a goat; divination dance. Finally the initiated woman beats the medicine into froth as a sign of her new abilities.

Der Aufbau der Krüge erfolgt auf gezogenen Böden in Spiralwulsttechnik. Die Tüllen werden von einer anderen Frau angefertigt.
    Abstract: On a pottery wheel equipped with a star wheel, a woman is making different jugs with handles and spouts from a mixture of red and black clay, which she has prepared in a pit in front of her house. The fabrication of the jugs takes place on a drawn bottom using the spiral roll technique. The spouts are prepared by another woman.

    Abstract: The tibetan New Year's festival was celebrated in Lhasa by numerous rituals and festivities, which in exile are performed only in a considerably simplified form. The film shows the decoration of a household altar for the New Year's Day, followed by a black hat dance, called also - after the 5th alai Lama - root dance (rtsa 'chams), meaning principal dance, which is part of every religious dancing performance.

    Abstract: Zur festlichen Einweihung eines neuerbauten Gemeinschaftswohnhauses (Maloka) am Rio Pirá-Paraná schmücken sich seine Bewohner zusammen mit den Gästen besonders durch Körperbemalung und Anlegen von Federschmuck. Das Fest wird mit Tänzen, Gesängen, Musik und Rezitation der Schöpfungsmythen begangen, bei Einnahme halluzinogener Drogen. Eine Rassellanze dient zur Anrufung hilfreicher Geister.
    Abstract: For the indians of Vaupés the Maloka is not only a house but a symbol of the cosmos. For this reason the inauguration of a Maloka is celebrated by a great festival, at which the participants wear precious feather ornaments. The film shows men and women decorating themselves for the dance festival. Different dances are performed inside the Maloka and in the open air. Under the influence of hallucinogene drugs the men recite the old myths of creation. A shaman appears upon the scene with a rattle lance. The festival is accompanied by the music of the syrinx and by the ritual chants.

    Abstract: Tibetische Mönche im Exil begehen das Neujahrsfest nach der Tradition eines Nyingmapa-Klosters (Zentraltibet) in vereinfachter Form: Die Ausschnitte beinhalten die Danksagung an die Schutzgottheiten und das Entlassen der Schutzgottheiten in ihre jeweiligen Bereiche.
    Abstract: The Tibetan New Year's festival was celebrated in Lhasa by numerous rituals and festivities, which in exile are performed only in a considerably simplified form. The film presents parts of an extensive ritual, the main part of which has taken place before in the temple. The sequences presented show the offering of thanks to the tutelary deities and the "release" of the deities returning to their respective spheres.

    Abstract: In seiner alten, wassergetriebenen Hammerschmiede (mit oberschlächtigem Wasserrad) in Bienno (Provinz Brescia) stellt der 47jährige Schmied Comensoli mit einem Gehilfen am Tag etwa 80 Spaten aus Alteisen in Serienproduktion her. Zum Formen benutzen sie einen preßluft- und einen wassergetriebenen Fallhammer. Die endgültige Form (nach Verkaufsgebiet verschieden) entsteht durch Pressen, Stanzen und Schleifen. Anschließend werden die Spaten gebündelt.

Anschließend erläutert er die Räumlichkeiten: Grablege mit Sarkophagen, Grabmäler im Garten, Kultraum mit Kultgegenständen. Als Ersatz für einen Zikr führt der Scheich im Ornat die Verwendung der einzelnen Gegenstände während des Zikr vor.
    Abstract: Sheik Hajdar Murteza guides the visitor through his cloister (tekye) and offers some comments. Next he describes his own life and the history of the Tekye. Then he shows the various rooms: the internment room with the sarcophagi of Rufâ'îye Sheiks, the tombstones in the garden, and, finally, the sanctuary (semâ'-châne)and the various relics found there (weapon, staffs). As a substitute for a Zikr the Sheik, dressed in his vestments, demonstrates how the various ritual items are used in the Zikr.

    Abstract: In an interview at the Bektâshî cloister at Djakovica Sheikh Baba Kâzim describes his adventurous life, including his political activities during the chaos of the Balkan War of 1912, the struggle for an independent Albania, and resistance to Ahmed Zogu. After 1926 he became a Bektâshî and, through a career in various cloisters in Albanien speaking areas, rose to the rank of Dede. Today he is the most important representative of the Bektâshî order in the Balkan countries.

    Abstract: Das 16,5 m lange Boot wird von Ochsengespannen ins Wasser gezogen und von der Bootsmannschaft über die Brandung gerudert. Das Zugnetz, bestehend aus einem Endsack (88 m) mit der Öffnung in Zugrichtung, zwei Flügeln je 500 m lang und zwei Haltetauen je 2,5 km lang, wird in Halbkreisform ins Wasser gesenkt und anschließend von Ochsengespannen an beiden Enden der Haltetaue an Land gezogen. Dort werden die Fische aus dem Sack geholt und in Körbe gefüllt. An dieser Gemeinschaftsarbeit nehmen 60 Männer und Frauen an See und am Land teil.
    Abstract: Fishing with the large drag net is a collective work, carried out by 60 men and women at sea and ashore. The boat, 16.5 m long, is drawn into the water by oxen and then rowed across the surf by the crew. The drag net, consisting of a large bag (88 m) with an opening at the upper end, two wings each 500 m long and two ropes each 2.5 km long, is put down into the water in a demi-circle and then drawn ashore by oxen put to the two ropes. The fish are taken out of the bag and put in baskets.

    Abstract: In the secondary forest northwest of the village of Meno (Washkuk Hills), Yessomari lays out a plantation. Women (relations by marriage as well as blood relations) begin to clear the undergrowth from the steep bit of forest. Then Yessomari and young male relatives of his fell all the trees in the peripheral areas of the prospective garden. Only the thickest ones are felled in the central area. Finally a group of relatively young men remove the leafy branches from the trees that have been left standing in the centre. The dry leaves and branches are burned on a suitable day when there is unabstructed sunshine. The planting can begin. (Cf. Film E 2289).

Die Mittagsversammlung wird hierbei vom Dalai Lama geleitet.
    Abstract: The Great Petitionary Prayer is one of the principal feasts of Tibetan Buddhism. At Lhasa it was held from the 4th to the 25th day of the first (lunar) month. In exile the Tibetans celebrate it in a simplified and abbreviated form, as at Dharamsala, the place of residence of the Dalai Lama. The film presents excerpts from the proceedings of the 15th day of the 1st month, the day of full moon, which is the climax of the feast. The "Midday Meeting without Tea" is conducted by the Dalai Lama himself.

    Abstract: Nach einem formelhaften religiösen "Wechselgespräch" zwischen Vorbeter und Scheich erfolgt durch die Teilnehmer der eigentliche Zikr (vgl. E 1968). Eine Besonderheit des Melâmî-Zikr ist das Absingen religiöser Lieder in albanischer Sprache.
    Abstract: The Zikr of the Melâmî Dervishes resembles the Zikr of the Chalvetî Dervishes (see Film E 1968) with minor differences: After a formalized religious "dialogue" between the precentor and the Sheikh the participants perform the actual Zikr. It includes the repetition of the word God (hû) along with an il- âhî (religious hymn) in Albanien. Occasionally the precentor interrupts the prayer with the recitation of religious formulare. The prayer is accompanied by rocking movements, and ends with the exclamation "Hû" (God).

    Abstract: Mit Hilfe von 24 Männern bestellt ein Mann in Meno seinen Garten: Vorbereiten der Yamsknollen, Graben der Setzlöcher, Transport der Setzlinge (Dioscorea alata und esculenta) und Auspflanzen; Hegen: Lianenspannen, Jäten, Nachpflanzen; Yamsernte.
    Abstract: A group of 24 men dig holes on the plantation Yessomari has cleared northwest of the village of Meno in the Washkuk Hills. Later his wives and other women bring the yam seedlings, including intact tubers of the local kou type (Dioscorea esculenta). The planter sprinkles the latter with a secret, watery solution and inserts them in the holes, always observing certain rules of conduct. Cut-up nein tubers are planted without ceremonial activity. The women plant taro and vegetables. Threads of split lianas are stretched from the trees left standing after the clearance work, and the creepers of the yam plants are arranged so that they can climb up on them. One of the times women from Yessomari's household go to the plantation is to harvest the early vegetables and to weed. The first yam tubers can be harvested on the luxuriantly overgrown plantation after eight months.

    Abstract: Das große Wunschgebet ist eines der bedeutendsten Feste des tibetischen Buddhismus, das im Exil in Dharamsala, dem Residenzort des Dalai Lama, in einer vereinfachten und verkürzten Form gefeiert wird: Ausschnitte aus einer Prüfungsdisputation und der anschließenden Predigt des jüngeren Tutors des Dalai Lama.
    Abstract: The Great Petitionary Prayer is one of the principal feasts of Tibetan Buddhism. At Lhasa it was held from the 4th to the 25th day of the first (lunar) month. In exile the Tibetans celebrate it in a simplified and abbreviated form, as at Dharamsala, the place of residence of the Dalai Lama. The film presents mainly excerpts from an examination dispute and the following sermon by the Dalai Lama's younger tutor.

In exile the Tibetans celebrate it in a simplified and abbreviated form, as at Dharamsala, the place of residence of the Dalai Lama. The film presents excerpts from the proceeding of the 15th day of the 1st month, the day of full moon, which is the climax of the feast.
