    Abstract: Bis heute muss der griechische Gott Dionysos herhalten, wenn von ihnen die Rede ist: Ekstasen sind wild, ihnen wohnt eine Energie inne, die fühlen kann, wer gerade entrückt ist, die aber nur allzu schwer in Worte zu fassen ist. Schamanen bewegen sich in Ekstase in unsichtbaren Welten, mittelalterliche Mystikerinnen vereinigten sich in ihr mit Gott, und der Rausch war und ist ein fester Bestandteil jeder Gesellschaft. Weil sie schwer kontrollierbar sind, sind Ekstasen bis heute verpönt – völlig verschwunden sind sie jedoch nie. Und kehren mit aller Macht zurück: Überraschenderweise begegnen wir ihnen heute nicht nur beim Rave oder bei schamanistischen Ritualen, sondern auch in Yogaklassen, Achtsamkeitsseminaren und Workshops, die die Leistungsfähigkeit im Job verbessern sollen. Und nicht zuletzt zeigt sich der neue Boom der Ekstatik in Krisenphänomenen wie einer martialischen Männlichkeit, in Massenbewegungen wie dem gewaltsamen Sturm aufs Kapitol in Washington oder den Protesten gegen die Coronamaßnahmen.     Abstract: "Despite the widespread consensus that China's digital revolution was sure to bring about massive democratic reforms, such changes have not come to pass. While scholars and policy-makers alternate between predicting change and disparaging a stubbornly authoritarian regime, in this book, Shaohua Guo argues that this dichotomy misses the far more complex reality. "The Evolution of the Chinese Internet" traces the emergence and maturation of one of the most creative digital cultures in the world, through four major technological platforms that have marked trends in internet use over the past two decades: the bulletin board system, the blog, the microblog, and WeChat. Guo transcends typical narratives, structured around the binaries of freedom and control, to argue that Chinese internet culture displays a uniquely sophisticated interplay between multiple extremes, and that its vibrancy is dependent on these complex negotiations. In contrast to the flourishing of research findings on what is made invisible online, this book examines the driving mechanisms that grant visibility to particular kinds of user-generated content, offering a systematic account of how and why an ingenious Internet culture has been able to flourish. Guo highlights the pivotal roles that media institutions, technological platforms, and creative practices of Chinese netizens have played in shaping culture on- and offline"--

    Abstract: In Imperial China, the idea of filial piety not only shaped family relations but was also the official ideology by which Qing China was governed. In State and Family in China, Yue Du examines the relationship between politics and intergenerational family relations in China from the Qing period to 1949, focusing on changes in family law, parent-child relationships, and the changing nature of the Chinese state during this period. This book highlights how the Qing dynasty treated the state-sponsored parent-child hierarchy as the axis around which Chinese family and political power relations were constructed and maintained. It shows how following the fall of the Qing in 1911, reform of filial piety law in the Republic of China became the basis of state-directed family reform, playing a central role in China's transition from empire to nation-state

    Abstract: This book explores how news media construct social issues and events and thereby convey certain perceptions within the scope of framing theory. By operationalizing media framing as a process of interpretation through defining problem, diagnosing causes, making moral judgments and suggesting solutions, the book proposes a systematic and transparent approach to images in news discourse. Based on a frame analysis, it examines how German news media framed a list of China-related issues and events, and thereby conveyed particular beliefs and opinions on this country. Moreover, it investigates whether there were dominant patterns of interpretation and the extent to which diverse views were evident by comparing two major daily newspapers with opposite political orientations - the FAZ and the taz. Motivated by the relationship between image and reality, the book explores image formation and persistence from media construction of meaning and human cognitive complexity in perceiving others. Media select certain issues and events and then interpret them from particular perspectives. A variety of professional and non-professional factors behind news making may result in biased representations. In addition, from a social psychological perspective, inaccurate perceptions of foreign cultures may arise from categorical thinking, biased processing of stimulus information, intergroup conflicts of interest and in-group favoritism. Accordingly, whether media coverage deviates from reality is not the main concern of this book; instead, it emphasizes the underlying logics upon which the conclusions and judgments were drawn. It therefore contributes to a rational understanding of Western discourse and holds practical implications for both Chinese public diplomacy and a more constructive role of news media in promoting the understanding of others

    Abstract: The Other Digital China: Nonconfrontational Activism on the Social Web maps out the emerging ecosystem of Chinese activism 2.0 that traverses multiple sectors-the NGO sector, universities, the corporate sector, and the IT sector-where change agents are creating social good in non-contentious ways and engaged in constructing the new "social" under difficult ideological constraints. Focusing on social media and tech practices emerging from China's social sector in recent years, this book provides a multifaceted look at the Chinese society caught at a transformative moment, thanks in part to the arrival of Web 2.0 technology and the accompanying cyber utopianism, as well as the Communist Party's recently alleged commitment to policies aimed at energizing the hitherto weak social structure. Wang develops the idea of "nonconfrontational activism" and argues that it's possible to talk about the agency of "change-makers" even in authoritarian countries.--

Even as the Chinese internet grows and online businesses thrive, speech is controlled, dissent quashed, and any attempts to organize outside the official Communist Party are quickly stamped out. Some are able to bypass the wall using VPNs, but this creates further a further divide between an intellectual class and the population at large, as those without the resources or digital knowhow are left in the dark. And there are hints that President Xi Jinping will soon fill in these leaks in the wall. As censorship, distortion, and fake news gain traction around the world, James Griffiths takes a look inside the Great Firewall and explores just how far it has spread. He looks at how internet giants like Google and Facebook are bowing to pressure and agreeing to compromise internet freedoms in pursuit of the burgeoning Chinese market. Griffiths also shows how the spread of Chinese influence around the globe is tied to an increasing worldwide crackdown in online freedom. One of China’s most insidious exports are its censorship techniques, and its Firewall is an inspiration for aspiring autocrats the world over. They collectively push past the reaffirmation of static conceptions of identity, authenticity, or conventional interpretations of stereotypes and bridge the intertextual gap between theories of community enactment and cultural representation. The book also draws together and melds otherwise isolated academic theories and methodologies (case studies, critical readings, and ethnographies, for example) in order to focus on race as an ideological reality and a process that continues to impact lives despite allegations that we live in a post-racial America. The collection is separated into three parts: Visualizing Race (Representational Media), Sounding Race (Soundscape), and Racialization in Place (Theory), each of which takes into account visual, audio, and geographic sites of racial representations respectively.     Abstract: Die Volksrepublik China entwickelte sich zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts zu einer weltweit führenden Wirtschaftsmacht. Die so entstandene globale Mobilität führte zu einem soziokulturellen Wandel innerhalb des Landes. Kommunikation, Kultur und Werte sind in diesem Prozess eng miteinander verbunden. Thomas Herdin setzt sich in seiner Habilitationsschrift für eine dynamische Werteauffassung ein. Die Grundlage von Kultur ist für ihn nicht an Territorien festzumachen, sondern an gemeinsamen Werten, Lebensformen und Deutungsmustern. Diese unterliegen einem ständigen Wandel und stellen somit keine feststehenden Einheiten dar. Kulturelle Gegensätze seien vereinbar wie bei dem taoistischen Yin-Yang-Symbol. Am Beispiel Chinas möchte er die klassische Denkweise, eine Gesellschaft sei entweder kollektivistisch oder individualistisch, durch das "Sowohl-als-auch-Schema" aufbrechen. Dabei will er eine westliche Verzerrung verhindern, indem er auch chinesische Ansätze und Modelle der Kommunikationswissenschaften miteinbezieht. Herdin beschreibt in seinem Werk verschiedene Deutungsmuster transkultureller Phänomene wie zum Beispiel das Lächeln. So wird dieses unter europäisch Sozialisierten meist als ein Ausdruck von Freude verstanden, in China werde allerdings auch in anderen Situationen, etwa bei Trauer, gelächelt. Im empirischen Teil seines Buches analysiert Herdin aktuelle Wertehaltungen und kulturelle Transformationsprozesse in China. Grundlage hierfür bilden Aussagen leitender Angestellter sowie Studierender in Peking und Shanghai. Es ist Herdin ein Anliegen, den Eurozentrismus in Frage zu stellen und das westliche Wissenschaftsverständnis kritisch zu reflektieren. (ifa)

    Abstract: The term 'Taoism of Clarified Tenuity' designates a new branch of religious Taoism developed since the 13/14th century by priests of the long-established Heavenly Masters Taoism. They claimed to continue Taoist exorcist traditions that since the Sung-period especially flourished because emperor Sung Hui-tsung (r. 1100?1126) appreciated the exorcism of 'Taoism of the Divine Empyrean' and 'Five Thunders rituals'. The purpose of the exorcist rituals was the expulsion of demoniac molestations, relief from droughts and inundations, and the healing of illnesses. Outstanding priests rationalized the exorcist practice, using theories of a meditative self-cultivation which peaked in the transformation into a Thunder divinity. The priest adopted a divine 'alter ego' for the time of the ritual. 'Taoism of Clarified Tenuity' developed on the basis of these traditions and embraced regionally different religious habits. It adopted and adapted older cults, partly including Buddhist-Tantric practices. Leading priests of 'Clarified Tenuity' presented theoretical essays, discussing the requirements of the personal cultivation of the Taoist to be a worthy performer of exorcism who was entitled to write and use amulets. The amulet was the essential ritual tool. However, the amulets of 'Clarified Tenuity' were remarkably different from the older 'Thunder' amulets of the Sung era. Also, the new branch adopted different attitudes concerning ritual practices such as the transformation into a divinity.0The book features developments of the more recent Taoist history and presents content and intention of 'Taoism of Clarified Tenuity'. The selected canonical texts also show that the priests of 'Clarified Tenuity' insisted on a clear distinction between exorcism in Heavenly Masters Taoism and shamanism that they disavowed. The book presents and analyses several 'Great Rituals' of 'Clarified Tenuity' and features elements of religious Taoism that today can still be traced

    Abstract: Internet usage in China has recently grown exponentially, rising from 59 million users in 2002 to 710 million by mid-2016. One in every two Chinese has currently been exposed to the Internet. This upsurge has made political communication among citizens and between the government and citizens less costly and almost instantaneous in China. Despite these advances, scholars are only beginning to understand and systematically explain the ways in which increased Internet exposure may affect behavior and values of Chinese netizens. Can the Internet help liberalize Chinese society due to its innate pluralism? Has the Internet become an efficient tool assisting the ruling elite to remain in power given the tendency of Internet service providers and users to be easily manipulated by the Chinese state? This book addresses these questions by focusing on the most digitally embedded segment of Chinese population – university students. Using survey evidence from more than 1200 observations, data confirm that Internet exposure to information generated by fellow netizens promotes democratic orientation, enhances political resistance to indoctrination, and boosts popular nationalism. However, exposure to government-managed websites encourages regime support and, at a less significance level, decreases democratic orientation, and elevates official patriotism. People who perceive the Internet as a tool enhancing the vertical communication between the Chinese government and netizens tend to become patriotic and supportive of the regime. Building upon quantitative evidence, this book draws a nuanced picture of Internet exposure and its political implications

    Abstract: Who watches over the party-state? In this engaging analysis, Maria Repnikova reveals the webs of an uneasy partnership between critical journalists and the state in China. More than merely a passive mouthpiece or a dissident voice, the media in China also plays a critical oversight role, one more frequently associated with liberal democracies than with authoritarian systems. Chinese central officials cautiously endorse media supervision as a feedback mechanism, as journalists carve out space for critical reporting by positioning themselves as aiding the agenda of the central state. Drawing on rare access in the field, Media Politics in China examines the process of guarded improvisation that has defined this volatile partnership over the past decade on a routine basis and in the aftermath of major crisis events. Combined with a comparative analysis of media politics in the Soviet Union and contemporary Russia, the book highlights the distinctiveness of Chinese journalist-state relations, as well as the renewed pressures facing them in the Xi era
