    Kurzfassung: In einem Tragkorb wird entkernte Baumwolle mit einem Zupfbogen aufgelockert und anschließend auf einem Walkbrett mit einer Walkspindel zu handlangen Spinnröllchen aufgerollt. Die Arbeiten werden von einem Mädchen aus Ban Alm ausgeführt.
    Kurzfassung: Cotton which is free from seed is loosened in a portable basket with a picking bow. A spindle is used to wind it up into hand-size spinning rolls on a fulling-board.

    Kurzfassung: Two threads with white seed pearls and two strings consisting of seven cotton threads each are strung on a bamboo bow in the manner of a warp. A red cotton thread is passed through the warp by hand. Thus a ribbon is made the edges of which are formed by the two rows of pearls. The end of the ribbon is finally decorated with a tassel of variously coloured cotton threads.

    Kurzfassung: Salanang Sen Tao, ein Schamane aus Huye Luang, bringt am Neujahrstag als Oberhaupt seiner Familie ein Bittopfer an die Ahnengeister dar.
    Kurzfassung: This sacrifice addresses the ancestor spirits. In front of the entrance of the shaman's house the ritual objects are assembled on a small altar table: incense sticks, alcholic liquid in bowls, rice, and spirit paper. The shaman standing in front of the altar invokes the spirits. He throws the oracle rods to inquire whether the sacrifice has been accepted and gives the fowl to two women who slaughter it in the manner required by ritual. Blood is sprinkled on the altar, on the rice and on the spirit paper. After the fowl is boiled it is brought back to the altar table. A pair of cymbals, a burning oil lamp, and smoking incense sticks are placed next to it. The shaman comes back to the altar table and continues its invocations. He throws again the oracle rods. Finally he burns the spirit paper, picks up the oracle rods and returns into his house. Members of the family remove the altar table and carry the ritual objects to the ancestor shrine inside the house.

    Kurzfassung: The dance is performed around a green tree stuck in the ground. The girls dance in a double-row in an inner circle, whilst the men form a chain as the outer circle. A reed organ player and a lute player take turns in leading the dance. The dance starts in a clockwise direction, changes then, and continues in an anti-clockwise direction up to the end.

    Kurzfassung: Brahim, the artisan dies strips of goat's leather in black, red and yellow colour. The stiffening for the sheath are cut out of cardboard and wound with red leather. The leather ist stuck with glue onto cardboard pieces. Onto the red leather pieces of black leather are stuck, stitched on at the back and the seam covered by a dress-seam wich ends by a dress-knot. Likewise at the back, a loop is fixed on as an upper-arm ring. The dagger's handle, enfaced by bound material pieces, Brahim covers with red leather. In the form of drilling, Brahim turns the upper-arm ring out of thin leather strips and to complete it, pulls it through the intended loop of the dagger sheath.

    Kurzfassung: Long dry grass is spread out across two bamboo stalks which are set up at some height; the grass is moistened. The labourer sits between the bamboo stalks, lays two beams before him on the grass, and takes a handful of grass-blades; he bends these blades in the middle and puts them around the beam on the right, binding them with a bamboo strip. The beam on the left is only used as support for the bent grass and is taken out when the mat is ready.

Dann trägt sie das Negativmuster in Wachs mit Batikfeder auf und färbt den Stoff in Indigo blau. Nach Auskochen des Wachses legt sie das Tuch auf die Trockenstange.
    Kurzfassung: A lattice pattern is pressed into the undyed cotton cloth, and then the negative of a pattern is drawn in wax with the batik pen. The cloth is then dyed blue in indigo, and the wax is finally melted out by boiling.

    Kurzfassung: Befestigen einiger Fasern am Haken der Spindelspitze, Herstellung kurzer Fadenlängen durch Drehungen der Spindel, Abrollen der Spindel auf dem Oberschenkel und freie Rotation am Faden, mit den Fingern kontinuierliches Nachziehen von Fasern und deren Verdrehung durch die rotierende Spindel, Aufwickeln fertig gesponnener Fadenlängen auf die Spindel. Die Arbeiten werden von einem Mädchen aus Ban Alm ausgeführt.
    Kurzfassung: The spinner holds a spinning roll in her left hand, fixes a few fibres into the hook of the spindle point and makes a short thread by rotating the spindle in her hand. After this, she rolls the spindle on her tigh and lets it rotate freely on the thread. She continually draws out fibres and twists them by means of the rotating spindle. When the thread is spun it is spun it is wound on the spindle.

    Kurzfassung: Thread from a wholly spun spindle is wound into a ball. The thread from the ball runs through a hollow bamboo stick which is held in the hand; then it is wound into a skein with the help of a double-T-shaped handreel. The skein is taken off the reel, starched in a solution of rice flour, and then strung between two poles to dry. When the skein is dry it is put on a reel and the thread is unwound into a basket. Six thread-beams are knocked into the ground and two women fix the warp.

    Kurzfassung: Five or six stones of the saba fruit are placed in a line on the ground. Three boys throw stones of the same type at them. The object of the game is for each player to knock down as many of the stones as he can. If all the players on one side have thrown, and if any of the stones are still standing, throwing is done from the other side. This goes on until all the stones have been knocked down. The player who has knocked down the largest number of stones is the winner.

    Kurzfassung: Am Tage vor dem Neujahrsfest führt Kee Seng Tao, ein Schamane aus Huye Luang, eine rituelle Schlachtung für seine eigene Familie als Bittopfer an die Ahnengeister durch.
    Kurzfassung: A sacrifice to the ancestor spirits. The ritual objects are arranged on an altar table in front of the house. The shaman invokes the spirits. His body is moved convulsively indicating that he gets possessed by the spirits. After having cpmpleted the invocation he throws oracle rods to inquire whether the sacrifice has been accepted. An animal sacrifice is then performed consisting in the slaughtering of a hog, the blood of which is finally sprinkled over the altar. The hog is then scalded, its bristles removed, it is washed in the river and cut up. Its head is placed on the altar, in front of which the shaman renews his invocations and throws the oracle rods once more. Finally, members of the family remove the altar.

She fixes the warp beam in the frame of the loom, makes the treadle mechanism ready for use, puts on the weaver's girth, puts the separating roll into position, checks the shed-formation, and then begins weaving.

    Kurzfassung: Shows the process taken by Diongor women in Chad to extract oil from peanuts, which are cultivated and kept in clay granaries. The hulls are removed, the peanuts are finely ground, placed in a pot, and cooked in hot water until oil forms on the surface. The oil is poured off and the remaining hot mass is pressed out on the grindstone.

    Kurzfassung: This film shows the felling of a tree in Malangaw (Zardéu valley, Province of Badaxsan, North-East Afghanistan) and charring of the wood in a nearby charcoal-kiln (filling of the filn and removal of the charcoal). The process outside of the underground kiln is recorded almost in its entirety, but the filling of the kiln only partially.

    Kurzfassung: In Korbo spielt das Stadtorchester von Mongo, bestehend aus der Oboe Gaita und vier verschiedenen Trommeln, Lobpreisungen. Zunächst werden die Instrumente einzeln vorgeführt, danach erfolgt ein Zusammenspiel.
    Kurzfassung: In many Sudanic towns there are professional musicians organized into orchestras. They play at family festivals, in brothels, and on official occasions, for example on legal holidays, at the visit of a government official, etc. Small towns, Mongo, offer earning oportunity for one orchestra only, bigger towns however often have several orchestras. In order to facilitate the analysis of the orchestra, the instruments in the first part of the film are demonstrated individually. The principal instrument is an oboe called 〈i〉gaita〈/i〉 the player blows up his cheeks and takes a provision of air which allows him to play the long melody without intermission. The other instruments of the orchestra are four diffenrent drums, beaten with wooden drumsticks or with the hand. After the demonstration of the different instruments, the film shows the orchestra playing in ensemble. The musicians proceed with slow rhythmic steps one behind the other. The 〈i〉gaita-player〈/i〉 occasionally turns towards the drummers, gives them the melody to accompany and removes unsteadiness in the synchronous playing together. The orchestra plays two different pieces of music which both belong to the category of the different clothes worn by the male Muslims in Tchadian towns.

    Kurzfassung: The film shows excerpts from a Kenga-Barana burial. Early in the morning several woman of the village have assembeld at the entrance-gate to the homestead of the deceased. They sing the traditional mourning-songs, some woman dance. Near relatives of the deceased have shaved their heads and put ashes on them as a sign of mouring. Many of the female mourners wear mourning belts of cotton strips. The men are sitting in a shelter and mourn silently, two of them sewing the shroud. In a reaped field outside the village the gave is dug. In the afternoon the great mourning-dances take place. They are accompained by the orchestra which consists of flutes, rattles and drums. All the people are in festive attire, the men are armed. With little interruptions they dance all the afternoon up to the burial. The film shows two dances completely. The dances stop when the funeral procession breaks up. Bearers carry the corpse prepared for the burial out of the homestead, in this moment women and children wail, the men brandish their weapons. Most of the people join the funeral procession.

The game is played between two parties of riders and consists of picking up, while mounted, the dead body of a calf of about 50 kilos, taking along the dead body, and depositing it in a marked circle.

    Kurzfassung: Die zur Initiation gehörende Tatauierung der Unterlippe wird bei Fada an drei Mädchen in strenger Klausur von einer Spezialistin durchgeführt: Wiederholtes Aufstechen der Unterlippe mit einem Akaziendorn und Einreiben der Wunde mit schwarzer Farbe und Ruß. Abschließend Stützen der geschwollenen Unterlippe mit Stäbchen.
    Kurzfassung: The process of tatooing the lip is executed in strict seclusion by a women specialised in this. The lip tatooing is a "rite de passage" for girls entering into womenhood. Only the lower lip is tatooed. With thorns of acazias the woman punctures the skin of the lower lip and rubs black colour and soot into it. The candidate does her best to surpress the pain. The puncturing and dyeing is repeating several times. After having completed tatooing, the lip is thickly swollen and this is why it is supported by a small stick tied with bands to the head.

    Kurzfassung: Einem geschlachteten Schaf werden die Sehnen herausgeschnitten. Während diese wässern, wird der Bogenstab geschnitzt. Die Tiersehnen werden gesplissen und zur Bogensehne zusammengedreht. Mit der getrockneten Sehne wird der Bogen zweifach bespannt. Nach dem Einsetzen der Lasche in die Mitte der Doppelsehne folgt ein Probeschuß.
    Kurzfassung: Sinews are removed from a slaughtered sheep, soaked in water, and dried. A bow staff is carved. The sinews are freed from pieces of skin, splintered, and twisted into a bowstring. The bowstring is stretched twice on the staff, a small stick is introduced at one edge to spread the two strings. A leather socket to receive the missile is placed in the middle of the double string, a pellet is placed in the socket and discharged.

The film commences with shots of the already lightly salted and dried skin being soaked and placed in the tanning solution and ends with a final softening of the tanned, dressed and dyed leather.

    Kurzfassung: The film demonstrates molding on a rotating molding disk, from the dressing of the molding sand down to the completion of three molds for copper, pots and plow share. Subsequently follows the firing and charging of a small furnace, a pit-furnace operated with a tube blast, with charcoal, pig iron, castings and limestone, as well as the tapping and filling of the molds. The molds are then smashed and the finished castwork is cleaned.

    Kurzfassung: Vorwiegend von Frauen wird die Erneuerung eines Hausdaches in Berdoba vorgenommen: Aufstellen eines Mittelpfostens, Befestigen des Giebelkranzes, der Dachsparren und von quer dazu gelegten Ästen. Zu Bündeln geordnete Gräser werden dachziegelartig überlappend aufgelegt und befestigt.
    Kurzfassung: The cone-roof of one of the round houses had to be replaced after a fire. First the middle pole supporting the roof is erected. The gable-wreath is attached to the pole and the roof-spars are laid on and tied to the gable-wreath. The spars are loosely placed on the wall. Flexible branches serve as boards. They are connected to the spars by ropes. To thatch the roof two different kinds of grass are used. The grass is put into bundles and fixed to the roof scaffolding with ropes. Each layer is layed down in overlapping brick form. A large grass bundle is put on the tip of the roof and held together by a sling-rope. The work is carried out by women on the whole.

    Kurzfassung: Im Dorf Maroki tanzen vor einer Gruppe von Preislieder singenden Frauen und Mädchen jeweils zwei der Frauen mit zwei jungen Männern. Nach einer Tanzsequenz wechseln die Tänzerinnen wieder zum Chor über, und zwei andere Frauen tanzen weiter.
    Kurzfassung: The film shows the Arab entertainment dance "djersiss" performed by the Hadded inhabiting Maroki village at the foot of the Gera Massif in eastern Tchad.

    Kurzfassung: Zubereitung von Hirsefladen: Zweimaliges Stampfen der Hirse unter Wasserzugabe und Worfeln, Durchschwemmen mit Wasser, Trocknen, erneutes Stampfen und Sieben. In kochendes Wasser wird zunächst ein Teil des Mehls eingerührt, dann folgt gemahlene, gekeimte Hirse und das restliche Hirsemehl. Nach dem Quellen des Teiges werden die Fladen auf einer Tonplatte gebacken.
    Kurzfassung: Only a few women among the Diongor in Chad are skilled in making millet flat cakes, which are made exclusively from Pennisetum. These cakes are generally made for sale; only the unsold will be eaten by the people themselves, for flat cakes are considered a fancy dish. The entire process of making these cakes is shown here.

    Kurzfassung: Im Dorf Barama tanzt die Trauergemeinde vor dem Gehöft des Verstorbenen zum Orchester, bestehend aus Flöten, Rasseln und Trommeln; kurze Phasen von Paartanz.
    Kurzfassung: The film shows the mutu-dance, one of the traditional Kenga mourning-dances, at fulll length. The mutu-dance takes place in front of the homestead of the deceased, it is one of the great mourning-dances taking place in the afternoon before the burial. All the inhabitants of the village as well as guests from the surrounding villages take part in it. Everybody is in festive attire, the men are armed. As a sign of mourning serveral women wear a thick cotton belt, others have shaved their heads, and the near female relatives have put ashes on their heads. The dance is accompained by the orchestra which consists of flutes, rattles and drums. Often a dancer executes only some sequences of steps, then he goes away and return later on. During the dance some of the men occasionally take one of the women for a partner and dance together with her.

    Kurzfassung: Auf einem Dorfplatz von Sara werden durch eine Frau an vier Mädchen im Alter von 7 bis 9 Jahren Exzisionen vorgenommen. Frauen, die durch Gesänge den Mädchen Mut machen und sie festhalten, helfen mit. Nach der vierten Exzision wird die Wundbehandlung mit erhitzter Butter demonstriert.
    Kurzfassung: Among the Omar-Arabs girls are excised at the age of seven to nine years, the custom of excision being explained by a religious commandment of Islam. The film shows excision performed on four girls. In one case the treating of the wounds after excision has also been filmed: A little butter is melted over a charcoal fire, a wad of cotton is soaked with it, and put several times on the wounds.
