    Abstract: Ruling Women is the first study of its kind devoted to an analysis of the debate concerning government by women in seventeenth-century France. Drawing on a wide range of political, feminist and dramatic texts, Conroy sets out to demonstrate that the dominant discourse which upholds patriarchy at the time is frequently in conflict with alternative discourses which frame gynæcocracy as a feasible, and laudable reality, and which reconfigure (wittingly or unwittingly) the normative paradigm of male authority. Central to the argument is an analysis of how the discourse which constructs government as a male prerogative quite simply implodes when juxtaposed with the traditional political discourse of virtue ethics. In Government, Virtue, and the Female Prince in Seventeenth-Century France, the first volume of the two-volume study, the author examines the dominant discourse which excludes women from political authority before turning to the configuration of women and rulership in the pro-woman and egalitarian discourses of the period. Highly readable and engaging, Conroy’s work will appeal to those interested in the history of women in political thought and the history of feminism, in addition to scholars of seventeenth-century literature and history of ideas

    Abstract: This open access book presents a condensed history of Sociology in Mexico from its origins, through to the middle of the 19th century and up to the present day. The book analyses the interaction between sociology and the main economic, political and social change in the country, including the 1910 Mexican Revolution, the main social movements, the role of the intellectual exiles from Spain and Latin America, and the participation of women, who have often remained invisible in the history of sociology. The book explores how sociological discourse played a fundamental role in the separation of secular and public education and the search for a ‘national project’ from 1868 onwards, despite the lack of an institute of social research until 1930; how sociology became an autonomous social science, led by a few intellectuals and public figures, as it became institutionalized in universities, and the effect this had on the development of the discipline; the influence of Marxism during the 1970s; and the progression from a process of specialization after the fall of the Berlin Wall to a new trend of working in collective projects with an increasing interdisciplinary perspective in the first decades of the 21st century. Gina Zabludovky is a tenured Professor and Researcher at UNAM, Mexico. She is the author and editor of numerous books, scientific articles, and book chapters on various topics including social and political theory, the history of sociology in Mexico, business organizations and women in decision-making positions. She has received several awards in recognition of her academic achievements.

    Abstract: Old Age and American Slavery explores how antebellum southerners, Black and white, adapted to, resisted, or failed to overcome changes associated with old age, both real and imagined. Slavery was a system of economic exploitation and a contested site of personal domination, both of which were affected by concerns with age. In examining how individuals, families, and communities felt about the aging process and dealt with elders, David Stefan Doddington emphasizes the complex social relations that developed in a slave society. In connecting old age to the arguments of Black activists, abolitionists, enslavers, and their propagandists, the book reveals how representations of old age, and experiences of aging, spoke to wider struggles relating to mastery, paternalism, resistance, and survival in slavery. The book asks us to rethink long-standing narratives relating to networks of solidarity in the American South and it illuminates the violent and exploitative nature of American slavery.

    Abstract: This book is a collection of Nai Xia’s quintessential works on Silk Road studies. With thorough investigations of foreign coinage, silk textiles, and artifacts with foreign styles excavated in different parts of China, it explores the exchange between ancient China and Central Asia, Western Asia, and Europe.     Abstract: What does it mean to be British? To answer this, Multiracial Britishness takes us to an underexplored site of Britishness - the former British colony of Hong Kong. Vivian Kong asks how colonial hierarchies, the racial and cultural diversity of the British Empire, and global ideologies complicate the meaning of being British. Using multi-lingual sources and oral history, Kong traces the experiences of multiracial residents in 1910-45 Hong Kong. Guiding us through Hong Kong's global networks, and the colony's co-existing exclusive and cosmopolitan social spaces, this book uncovers the long history of multiracial Britishness. Kong argues that Britishness existed in the colony in multiple, hyphenated forms - as a racial category, but also as privileges, a means of survival, and a form of cultural and national belonging. This book offers us an important reminder that multiracial inhabitants of the British Empire were just as active in the making of Britishness as the British state and white Britons.

    Abstract: This open access book explores some of the struggles and challenges that researchers and practitioners face when conducting research in the Central Asian research setting.     Abstract: How did men cope with sexual health issues in early modern England? This vivid history investigates how sexual, reproductive, and genitourinary conditions were understood between 1580 and 1740. Drawing on medical sources and personal testimonies, it reveals how men responded to bouts of ill health and their relationships with the medical practitioners tasked with curing them. In doing so, this study restores men's health to medical histories of reproduction, demonstrating how men's sexual self-identity was tied to their health. Charting genitourinary conditions across the life cycle, the book illustrates how fertility and potency were key to medical understandings of men's health. Men utilized networks of care to help them with ostensibly embarrassing and shameful conditions like hernias, venereal disease, bladder stones, and testicular injuries. The book thus offers a historical voice to modern calls for men to be alert to, and open about, their own bodily health.

    Abstract: 1959 entstanden mit Dave Brubecks "Time Out", John Coltranes "Giant Steps", Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue", Bill Evans' "Portrait in Jazz" und Ornette Colemans "The Shape of Jazz to Come" stilprägende Alben, die für die weitere Entwicklung des Jazz wegweisend waren. In ihnen finden sich metrische und harmonisch-melodische Konzepte sowie grundlegende Neuerungen in der Organisation des Zusammenspiels und im Umgang mit improvisierter Musik, die heute fester Bestandteil des Jazz sind. Der Autor geht den Ursprüngen und Vorläufern dieser Konzepte nach, untersucht die biografischen Bezüge der Protagonisten zu den Konzepten und zum Zeitgeist und betrachtet die Rezeptionsgeschichte der Alben.
    Abstract: The year 1959 saw the release of Dave Brubeck's "Time Out", John Coltrane's "Giant Steps", Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue", Bill Evans' "Portrait in Jazz" and Ornette Coleman's "The Shape of Jazz to Come", all style-defining albums that were groundbreaking in the development of jazz. They contain metrical and harmonic-melodic concepts as well as fundamental innovations in the organisation of ensemble playing and the handling of improvised music, which are an integral part of jazz today. The author traces the origins and antecedents of these concepts, examines the protagonists' biographical references to the concepts and the zeitgeist, and looks at the reception history of the albums.

    Abstract: Vor drei Jahrzehnten legten Pierre Bourdieu und sein Team eine aufsehenerregende soziologische Studie zum Thema "Das Elend der Welt" vor. Sie hatte für ein wissenschaftliches Werk von fast 1000 Seiten Umfang einen ganz erstaunlichen Publikumserfolg, wurde aber auch angesichts ihrer mit vielen Regeln des akademischen Betriebs bewusst brechenden Forschungsstrategien, Methoden und literarisch anmutenden Erzählkunst zur Zielscheibe heftiger Kritik. Oft war die Rede von einem Bruch mit den für Bourdieu bis dahin kennzeichnenden "Regeln der soziologischen Methode", und es wurde viel darüber spekuliert, wie diese Form vermeintlich "undisziplinierten" Forschens zu verstehen sei. Dank der Entdeckung bislang unbekannter Quellen im Pariser Pierre Bourdieu-Archiv ist es uns jetzt möglich, einen direkten Einblick in die Forschungswerkstatt Bourdieus zu bekommen und die Entstehung dieser bedeutenden soziologischen Studie Schritt für Schritt zu rekonstruieren. Anhand der persönlichen Aufzeichnungen Bourdieus und der Protokolle der Teamsitzungen wird hierbei die Praxis des Forschens selbst – von Fragen der Interviewtechnik, über Stichprobenziehung und Transkriptionsmethoden bis hin zur Komposition einer komplexen gesellschaftstheoretischen Collage – zum Gegenstand wissenschaftlicher Objektivierung und kritischer Reflexion im Hinblick auf die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen soziologischer Erzählkunst. Der Autor Franz Schultheis ist Senior Professor für Soziologie des Kunstfeldes an der Zeppelin Universität Friedrichshafen und forscht zu Themen wie "Visuelle Formen soziologischer Erkenntnis", "Gesellschaftliche Exklusion" oder "Kunst und Kapital". Er arbeitete lange mit Pierre Bourdieu zusammen, ist Präsident der Fondation Bourdieu und Mitherausgeber der Bourdieu Schriften beim Suhrkamp Verlag.

    Abstract: ‚Männlichkeit‘ gilt als lange gleichgesetzt mit dem ‚Allgemein-Menschlichen‘ und daher als Spezifikum regelrecht unsichtbar. Was macht das Nachdenken über und die Beforschung von ‚Männlichkeit‘ dann epistemologisch wie gesellschaftlich wahrscheinlich? Dieser Frage geht die vorliegende Studie aus gesellschaftstheoretischer Perspektive nach. Entlang sozialwissenschaftlicher Publikationen zu ‚Männlichkeit‘ von 1908-2022 werden gesellschaftliche Zusammenhänge rekonstruiert, die die (wissenschaftliche) Reflexivierung von ‚Männlichkeit‘ bedingen. Damit stellt die Studie eine erste systematische Untersuchung des Feldes der Männlichkeitsforschung dar. Zudem entpuppt sich das vergleichsweise kleine Forschungsfeld als reichhaltiges Labor, an dem sich über dessen Partikularität hinaus soziologische Grundfragen und methodologische Aspekte diskutieren lassen: darunter Subjekt-Gesellschaft-Verhältnisse, Epistemologie und Operationalisierung, Prozesse der Grenzziehungen und Stabilisierung wissenschaftlicher Disziplinen sowie die Bedeutung von Un-/Sichtbarkeit, Paradoxien und blinden Flecken von Beobachtungen. Die Autorin Jana Fritsche studierte Soziologie, Politikwissenschaften und Gender Studies an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität und wurde dort 2023 mit einer Arbeit über die Entwicklung der Männlichkeitsforschung promoviert. Seit 2023 ist sie wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Medical Education Center der Technischen Universität München.     Abstract: Über Kommunikation ist viel kommuniziert worden. Watzlawick schreibt sogar, man könne nicht nicht kommunizieren. Die hier vorgelegte Aufsatzsammlung vereint eine Reihe von Beiträgen, die im Laufe der Jahre in höchst unterschiedlichen Kontexten entstanden sind. Das Thema Kommunikation war oft nicht das Zentrum. Viele Texte entstanden ursprünglich auch in interdisziplinären Kolloquien. Die Arbeiten hier zusammenzufügen entspringt der Absicht, eine vorher teilweise latente Sinnlinie freizulegen. Man könnte von einer Transformation von Publikationen in Spolien sprechen. Das Hauptanliegen ist, einige bislang eher wenig behandelte Horizonte des Themas ins Auge zu fassen, Ränder sozusagen oder Sonderaspekte. Dieser Horizont erscheint bisweilen als Kaleidoskop. Der Autor Alois Hahn war von 1974-2009 Professor für Soziologie an der Universität Trier, war für mehrere Lehr- und Forschungsaufenthalte in Paris, ist ordentliches Mitglied der Europäischen Akademie der Wissenschaft und Künste in Salzburg und war Fellow des Wissenschaftskollegs Berlin.

Der Feldzugang ist eine notwendige Bedingung, um Feldforschung betreiben zu können – gelingt der Zugang zum Feld nicht, dann ist auch die geplante Forschung nicht möglich. Das Anbahnen eines Feldzugangs ist entsprechend eine besonders kritische Phase des Forschungsprozesses, die grundsätzlich die Eigenschaft hat, krisenhaft zu sein oder es zu werden.     Abstract: This is the first broad-ranging, comprehensive and comparative study of the concepts of propaganda and neutrality. Bringing together world-leading and early career historians, this open access book explores case studies from the time of the First World War to the end of the Cold War in countries such as Belgium, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Switzerland, Vichy France, USA, Argentina, Turkey, Portuguese Macau, Brazil, South Africa, Laos, Yugoslavia, Egypt, India, Malta, and Sweden. The individual chapters analyse the methods and channels of propaganda utilised in neutral countries, including rumours, newspapers, cartoons, films, pamphlets and magazines as well as radio broadcasts, official reports, diplomatic movements, cultural campaigns and soft power. They look to understand how these methods and channels have been deployed and how effective they have been in changing or reinforcing opinions and outcomes. Finally the book highlights the interaction between the concepts of propaganda and neutrality. It considers whether neutrality is a form of propaganda in itself, whether it is possible to be truly neutral in any propaganda battle and how the different forms of neutrality, including projected strict neutrality, non-belligerency and non-alignment, have been utilised by neutrals and belligerents to achieve propaganda goals in the last 120 years.     Abstract: This book explores the writing of church history during the early Byzantine period, reconsidering the evidence for the nature and authorship of a hypothetical 'Arian' source for many surviving medieval histories of the fourth century. It considers surviving ecclesiastical histories written between the fifth and early thirteenth centuries to draw out commonalities apparently owed to this 'lost' source and discusses attempts by modern historians to reconstruct it. In doing so, it convincingly argues that this 'Arian' material likely belongs not to one work, but three: two chronicles and a martyrology. This book therefore provides a vital reassessment of fourth-century Christian historiography, as well as important insights on chronicle writing in the Middle Ages. Joseph J. Mostafa Minawi shows how these men and women negotiated their loyalties and guarded their privileges through a microhistorical study of the changing social, political, and cultural currents between 1878 and the First World War. He narrates lives lived in these turbulent times--the joys and fears, triumphs and losses, pride and prejudices--while focusing on the complex dynamics of ethnicity and race in an increasingly Turco-centric imperial capital. Drawing on archival records, newspaper articles, travelogues, personal letters, diaries, photos, and interviews, Minawi shows how the loyalties of these imperialists were questioned and their ethnic identification weaponized. As the once diverse empire comes to an end, they are forced to give up their home in the imperial capital. An alternative history of the last four decades of the Ottoman Empire, "Losing Istanbul" frames global pivotal events through the experiences of Arab-Ottoman imperial loyalists who called Istanbul home, on the eve of a vanishing imperial world order"--

    Abstract: This book uses popular films to understand the convergence of crime control and the ideology of repression in contemporary capitalism. It focuses on the cinematic figure of the fallen guardian, a protagonist who, in the course of a narrative, falls from grace and becomes an enemy of the established social order. The fallen guardian is a figure that allows for the analysis of a particular crime control measure through the perspective of both an enforcer and a target. The very notion of ‘justice’ is challenged, and questions are posed in relation to the role that films assume in the reproduction of policing as it is. In doing so, the book combines a historical far-reaching perspective with popular culture analysis. At the core remains the value of the cinematic figure of the fallen guardian for contemporary understandings of urban space and urban crime control and how films are clear examples of the ways in which the ideology of repression is reproduced. This book questions the justifications that are often given for social control in cities and understands cinema as a medium for offering critique of such processes and justifications. Explored are the crime control measures of private policing in relation to RoboCop (1987), preventative policing and Minority Report (2002), mass incarceration in The Dark Knight Rises (2012), and extra-judicial killing in Blade Runner 2049 (2017). The book speaks to those interested in crime control in critical criminology, cultural criminology, urban studies, and beyond. Vladimir Rizov is Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Winchester, UK. He researches the history of documentary photography in relation to urban studies, the development of video game photography, and the cinematic representation of crime control. His work has been published in CITY, Theory, Culture & Society, The Journal of Aesthetic Education, and Journal of Urban History.

    Abstract: 〈i〉Youth Movements and Generational Politics, 19th-21st Centuries〈/i〉 by Richard and Margaret Braungart is a collection of nineteen of their previously published research articles on youthful political activism, generational conflict and social change. After assessing 1960s' student groups on the political left, right and center, generations of youth movement activity are identified in each world region-from the first student movement in Germany in 1815 to the global surge in youth unrest and demonstrations in the twenty-first century. Representing more than fifty years of research, youth movements and generational politics are explored from historical, generational and global perspectives. As a collection, these articles are theoretically grounded, empirically based, interdisciplinary and comparative. Exploring youth movements at individual, group, societal and international levels, a variety of methodological approaches for studying youth activism are illustrated. In a concluding chapter, the Braungarts update youth movement activity in the twenty-first century and discuss how their previous decades of international research informs the global rise in youthful mobilization over politics. The trends and changes in youth unrest and generational politics are assessed now and into the future.

    Abstract: Dieses Buch bietet den ersten umfassenden Überblick über die Geschichte der Soziologie in der heutigen Tschechischen Republik. In sechs Kapiteln wird die institutionelle Entwicklung der Disziplin vom späten 19. Jahrhundert bis in die Gegenwart nachgezeichnet, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf den für die Institutionalisierung der Soziologie entscheidenden Perioden liegt: den Zwischenkriegsjahren, den 1960er Jahren und der Zeit nach 1989. Institutionen, Personen und Ideen, die für die Disziplin von zentraler Bedeutung waren, werden in einem breiteren sozialen und politischen Kontext dargestellt. Marek Skovajsa und Jan Balon zeigen, dass die Soziologie in der Tschechischen Republik mit den vorherrschenden politischen Projekten jeder aufeinanderfolgenden historischen Periode verbunden war: dem Aufbau der Nation und des Staates bis nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, dem kommunistischen Experiment von 1948-1989, dem liberal-demokratischen Wiederaufbau nach 1989 und der Internationalisierung nach 2000. Das Werk richtet sich sowohl an Sozialwissenschaftler als auch an eine allgemeine Leserschaft, die sich für die tschechische Kultur und Gesellschaft interessiert. Die Autoren Marek Skovajsa ist Dozent an der Philosophischen Fakultät der Karlsuniversität in Prag. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Geschichte der Soziologie, Sozialtheorie, Kultur und Zivilgesellschaft. Jan Balon ist Dozent am Institut für soziologische Studien der Karlsuniversität in Prag und Abteilungsleiter und Forscher am Zentrum für Wissenschaft, Technologie und Gesellschaftsstudien der Tschechischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Tschechische Republik.
