    Abstract: Kaum war das 21. Jahrhundert angebrochen, wartete es auch schon mit neuen Schrecken, Idiotien und gelegentlichen Glücksmomenten auf. Zu den wenigen, die es noch wagen, in diesem von den Medien verdickten und beschleunigten Wirrwarr Zusammenhänge herzustellen und dabei an einem anspruchsvollen Begriff von Kritik festzuhalten, gehört Diedrich Diederichsen. In dieser Wundertüte von einem Reader mit Aufsätzen und Kommentaren, wenn auch erst aus den ersten dreiundzwanzig Jahren des Jahrhunderts, zeigt er sein stupendes Wissen über sämtliche Trends in Kunst, Kino, Fernsehen, Literatur, Musik, Theater, Theorie und Politik, das bis in die feinsten Verästelungen der Gegenkultur reicht. Er ist in der Lage, aus Erkenntnistheorie ebenso Funken zu schlagen wie aus den »Simpsons«, den Inszenierungen von René Pollesch oder Serien wie »Underground Railroad«. Vor allem vermag er es wie kein anderer, das eine mit dem anderen zu verknüpfen und von Theodor W. Adorno zur Familie Duck oder von einer Hamburger Baustelle zu einer feministischen Kunstinstallation (und zurück) zu springen. Auffällig ist, dass es immer wieder musikalische Vertreter*innen des Typus »Junkie« sind, die zu Weltstars und Ikonen werden. Doch warum ist dieser Lebenswandel und dabei ausgerechnet der Konsum von Heroin so populär (gewesen)? Durch die Rekonstruktion individueller Lebensgeschichten heroinabhängiger Musiker*innen in Los Angeles bestimmt Melanie Ptatscheck nicht nur sozialpsychologische und musikspezifische Suchtfaktoren. Ebenso zeigt sie auf, durch welche individuellen Bedürfnisse und gesellschaftlichen Narrative die Selbstvorstellungen dieser Musiker*innen geprägt sind

    Abstract: This book demonstrates the rich and varied ways in which heavy metal music draws on the ancient Greek and Roman world. Contributors examine bands from across the globe, including: Blind Guardian (Germany), Therion (Sweden), Celtic Frost, Eluveitie (Switzerland), Ex Deo (Canada/Italy), Heimdall, Stormlord, Ade (Italy), Kawir (Greece), Theatre of Tragedy (Norway), Iron Maiden, Bal-Sagoth (UK), and Nile (US). These and other bands are shown to draw inspiration from Classical literature and mythology such as the Homeric Hymns, Vergil's Aeneid, and Caesar's Gallic Wars, historical figures from Rome and ancient Egypt, and even pagan and occult aspects of antiquity. These bands' engagements with Classical antiquity also speak to contemporary issues of nationalism, identity, sexuality, gender, and globalization. The contributors show how the genre of heavy metal brings its own perspectives to Classical reception, and demonstrate that this music-often dismissed as lowbrow-engages in sophisticated dialogue with ancient texts, myths, and historical figures. The authors reveal aspects of Classics' continued appeal while also arguing that the engagement with myth and history is a defining characteristic of heavy metal music, especially in countries that were once part of the Roman Empire

    Abstract: "A popular fascination with fame and stardom has existed in Western culture since the late eighteenth century; a fascination that, in the twenty-first century, reaches into almost every facet of public life. The pervasive nature of stardom in modern society demands study from the perspectives of a range of distinct but thematically connected disciplines. The exploration of intersections between broader considerations of stardom and the discourses of popular music studies is the genesis for this volume. The chapters collected here demonstrate the variety of work currently being undertaken in stardom studies by scholars in Australia. The contributions range from biographical considerations of the stars of popular music, contributions to critical discourses of stardom in the industry more broadly, and the various ways in which the use of astronomical metaphors, in both cultural commentary and academic discourse, demonstrate notions of stardom firmly embedded in popular music thought. Not only do these chapters represent a range of perspectives on popular music, stars and stardom, they provide eloquent and innovative contributions to the developing discourse on stardom in popular music."

It shows how music encouraged, unified, divided, consoled and reminded; and it helps to understand better the affective register of the political and cultural life of those who composed, performed and consumed it. Throughout the long nineteenth century the sounds of liberty resonated across the Anglophone world: in the faint strains of 'rough music' played on the streets of Toronto and the 'middle-brow' performances within the walls of a secularist coven in Christchurch; in cacophonous election songs swirling around the hustings in Glasgow and Sunday afternoon chamber music concerts in the heart of radical Holborn; in defiant anthems blaring slightly out of tune on picket lines in Broken Hill and in hymns warbled by labour church choirs in Winnipeg. The first section examines songs; the second examines music's place in the public sphere where people - individually and collectively - made music when marching, electioneering, celebrating and commemorating, as well as striking, rioting and rebelling.     Abstract: Addressing a wide range of improvised art and music forms—from jazz and cinema to dance and literature—this volume's contributors locate improvisation as a key site of mediation between the social and the aesthetic. As a catalyst for social experiment and political practice, improvisation aids in the creation, contestation, and codification of social realities and identities. Among other topics, the contributors discuss the social aesthetics of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, the Feminist Improvising Group, and contemporary Malian music, as well as the virtual sociality of interactive computer music, the significance of "uncreative" improvisation, responses to French New Wave cinema, and the work of figures ranging from bell hooks and Billy Strayhorn to Kenneth Goldsmith.

    Abstract: On the basis of a body of reggae songs from the 1970s and late 1990s, this book offers a sociological analysis of memory, hope and redemption in reggae music. From Dennis Brown to Sizzla, the way in which reggae music constructs a musical, religious and socio-political memory in rupture with dominant models is vividly illustrated by the lyrics themselves. How is the past remembered in the present? How does remembering the past allow for imagining the future? How does collective memory participate in the historical grounding of collective identity? What is the relationship between tradition and revolution, between the recollection of the past and the imagination of the future, between passivity and action?     Abstract: In mid-1990s South Africa, apartheid ended, Nelson Mandela was elected president, and the country s urban black youth developed "kwaito" a form of electronic music (redolent of North American house) that came to represent the post-struggle generation. In this book, Gavin Steingo examines kwaito as it has developed alongside the democratization of South Africa over the past two decades. Tracking the fall of South African hope into the disenchantment that often characterizes the outlook of its youth today who face high unemployment, extreme inequality, and widespread crime Steingo looks to kwaito as a powerful tool that paradoxically engages South Africa s crucial social and political problems by, in fact, seeming to ignore them. Politicians and cultural critics have long criticized kwaito for failing to provide any meaningful contribution to a society that desperately needs direction. As Steingo shows, however, these criticisms are built on problematic assumptions about the political function of music. Interacting with kwaito artists and fans, he shows that youth aren t escaping their social condition through kwaito but rather using it to expand their sensory realities and generate new possibilities. Resisting the truism that music is always political, Steingo elucidates a music that thrives on its its radically ambiguous relationship with politics, power, and the state. - Gavin Steingo is assistant professor of music at the University of Pittsburgh.

    Abstract: The sustainability of music and other intangible expressions of culture has been high on the agenda of scholars, governments and NGOs in recent years. However, there is a striking lack of systematic research into what exactly affects sustainability across music cultures. By analyzing case studies of nine highly diverse music cultures against a single framework that identifies key factors in music sustainability, Sustainable Futures for Music Cultures offers an understanding of both the challenges and the dynamics of music sustainability in the contemporary global environment, and breathes new life into the previously discredited realm of comparative musicology, from an emphatically non-Eurocentric perspective. Situated within the expanding field of applied ethnomusicology, this book confirms some commonly held beliefs, challenges others, and reveals sometimes surprising insights into the dynamics of music cultures. By examining, comparing and contrasting highly diverse contexts from thriving to 'in urgent need of safeguarding,' Sustainable Futures for Music Cultures analyzes sustainability across five carefully defined domains. The book identifies pathways to strategies and tools that may empower communities to sustain and revitalize their music heritage on their terms. In this way, this book contributes to greater scholarly insight, new (sub)disciplinary approaches, and pathways to improved practical outcomes for the long-term sustainability of music cultures. As such it will be an essential resource for ethnomusicologists, as well as scholars and activists outside of music, with an interest in the preservation of intangible cultural heritage.
    Abstract: Professor Huib Schippers has broad, hands-on experience of more than forty years in the practice and study of world music, ethnomusicology and music education. He is a recognised leader of action research projects focusing on cultural diversity, and was responsible for establishing the World Music & Dance Centre (Rotterdam, 1996-2006) and the innovative Queensland Conservatorium Research Centre (Brisbane, 2003-2015). Dr Catherine Grant is a former Endeavour Australia Research Fellow and recipient of Australia's Future Justice medal for her work on issues of music endangerment and sustainability. Her book Music Endangerment: How Language Maintenance can Help was published in 2014 by Oxford University Press.

Instruments for New Music traces a diffuse network of cultural agents who shared the belief that a truly modern music could be attained only through a radical challenge to the technological foundations of the art. Centered in Germany during the 1920s and 1930s, the movement to create new instruments encompassed a broad spectrum of experiments, from the exploration of microtonal tunings and exotic tone colors to the ability to compose directly for automatic musical machines. This movement comprised composers, inventors, and visual artists, including Paul Hindemith, Ernst Toch, Jörg Mager, Friedrich Trautwein, László Moholy-Nagy, Walter Ruttmann, and Oskar Fischinger.     Abstract: In 'Audible States', Nicholas Tochka traces an aural history of Albania's government through a close examination of the development and reception of light music as it has long been broadcast at an annual song competition, Radio-Television Albania's Festival of Song. Drawing on a wide range of archival resources and over 40 interviews with composers, lyricists, singers, and bureaucrats, Tochka describes how popular music became integral to governmental projects to improve society and a major concern for both state-socialist and post-socialist regimes between 1945 and the present

    Abstract: This book offers a range of trajectories of academic thought and musical practice in Turkey. It adopts a multidisciplinary approach, with chapters exploring the question posed by its title from the perspectives of ethnomusicology, historical musicology, neurology, psychology, social science, gender studies, acoustics, and linguistics. Some studies are experimental and scientific in nature, ranging from a friends focus on tonality, using EEG to investigate differences in the cognitive responses of musicians and non-musicians listening to tonal and atonal chords, to an examination of brain activation in response to reverberation time differences resulting from room acoustics. Another essay assesses the psychometric properties and effectiveness of the new Turkish version of the Music Performance Anxiety Inventory for Adolescents (MPAI-A), designed to survey performance anxiety and determine its severity in adolescent musicians. On a completely different tack, two studies investigate Turkey's heavy metal scene. The first explores the social forces propelling the "moral panic" over Satanism and heavy metal, generated by the national press in response to a gory murder in the 1990s. Through field interviews, this study examines the impact of this on the public perception and stereotypes of metal fans, and its effects on the fans themselves. The second contribution examines gender codes within the global extreme metal scene, looking specifically at the barriers faced - and overcome - by female Turkish extreme metal musicians. Setting Turkish music practices today in their historical context, a further contribution offers a critical appraisal of the mission to "contemporize" music, expounded (though ineffectually carried out) by the founding ideologies of Early Republican Turkey.
    Abstract: A similar chapter discusses how even Anatolian folk music, when examined more closely, caused consternation, looking at the change in the Turkish state's attitude towards the multicultural structure of Anatolia during the last decade. The final article in this volume focuses on how Turkish musicians use the term "sound" - the English word, as borrowed in Turkish - to discuss elements of music. Beyond the physical meaning of the word, the essay explores the ways the word is used by musicians to describe the timbre of instruments, the production quality of recordings, the application of music technology, the aural aesthetics of an album, and the distinctive and unique elements of an artist's performance. - Firat Kutluk is a Professor of Musicology, and received his PhD on "Cultural Analysis of Popular Music in Turkey" in 1994. In addition to participating in various conferences, seminars and symposiums, he has presented a series of lectures on "New Music" and "Music and Politics". Between 1991 and 2009, he made a number of music programmes for broadcast, and has published the books Music History (1997) and Music and Politics (1997). He is currently Director of the Graduate School of Fine Arts at Dokuz Eylul University and Principal of DABMER (Acoustic and Cognitive Musicology Research Centre). Ugur Turkmen graduated from Uludag University's Faculty of Education in 1993. He gained a Master's degree from the Department of Music Education of Selcuk University in 1996. In 2005, he received his doctorate from Bolu Abant Izzet Baysal University's Department of Music Education, before becoming an Associate Professor of Musicology in 2010. He is currently the Director of Afyon Kocatepe University State Conservatory.

    Abstract: This book explores the role of music in negotiating difference. It brings to light processes of differentiation and social stereotypes and hierarchies at at work in the evolving French Louisiana musical field. It also draws attention to the interactions between binary oppositions such as black and white, urban and rural, differentiation and creolization, traditional and modern, and local, national and global. The book argues for the importance of desegregating the understanding of French Louisiana music by situating it beyond ethnic or racial identifications, bringing to light the importance of regional identification. The musical genealogy and categories in use are legitimized through an omnipresent racial imaginary that frames African and European lineage as a foundational difference. Instead of seeing the discourses of origins and mixing as contradictory, the field and the way music is practiced show that they continually interact. French Louisiana musicians navigate between multiple identifications, music styles and legacies while market forces, outsider’s interest and geographical mobility also contribute to shape their career strategies and musical choices. This work also demonstrates the decisive role of non-natives' interest and mobility in the validation, evolution, and reconfiguration of French Louisiana music. Finally, the distinctiveness of South Louisiana with respect to the rest of the country appears both nurtured and endured, revealing the intricacies of political domination and regionalism

    Abstract: This is the first comprehensive comparative study of religions in the history of American jazz, and of jazz's contributions to American religions. Going beyond extant biographical studies of individual exemplars, or cursory attention to either 'spirituality' or jazz in the civil rights movement, the book argues for the centrality of religious experiences to any legitimate understanding of jazz, while also suggesting that attention to jazz opens up new interpretations of American religious history.

    Abstract: The Venezuelan youth orchestra program known as "El Sistema" has attracted much attention internationally, partly via its flagship orchestra, The Simonn Bolivar Youth Orchestra, headed by Gustavo Dudamel, and partly through its claims to use classical music education to rescue vulnerable children. Having been met overwhelmingly with praise, The System has become an inspiration for music educators around the globe. Yet, despite its fame, influence, and size - it is projected to number a million students in Venezuela and has spread to dozens of countries - it has been the subject of surprisingly little scrutiny and genuine debate. In this first full-length critical study of the program, Geoffrey Baker explores the career of its founder, Jose Antonio Abreu, and the ideology and organizational dynamics of his institution. Drawing on a year of fieldwork in Venezuela and interviews with Venezuelan musicians and cultural figures, Baker examines El Sistema's program of "social action through music," reassessing widespread beliefs about the system as a force for positive social change.
    Abstract: Abreu, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, emerges as a complex and controversial figure, whose project is shaped by his religious education, economics training, and political apprenticeship. Claims for the symphony orchestra as a progressive pedagogical tool and motor of social justice are questioned, and assertions that the program prioritizes social over musical goals and promotes civic values such as democracy, meritocracy, and teamwork are also challenged. Placing El Sistema in historical and comparative perspective, Baker reveals that it is far from the revolutionary social program of contemporary imagination, representing less the future of classical music than a step backwards into its past. A controversial and eye-opening account sure to stir debate, El Sistema is an essential read for anyone curious about this phenomenon in the worlds of classical music, education, and social development. - Geoffrey Baker is a Reader in the Music Department at Royal Holloway, University of London. His books include Imposing Harmony: Music and Society in Colonial Cuzco (2008), which won the American Musicological Society's Robert Stevenson Award, and Buena Vista in the Club: Rap, Reggaeton, and Revolution in Havana (2011).
