    Abstract: Dieses Buch bietet eine ausführliche und aktuelle Auseinandersetzung mit der Frage, wie der Zugang zum Forschungsfeld gelingen kann. Der Feldzugang ist eine notwendige Bedingung, um Feldforschung betreiben zu können – gelingt der Zugang zum Feld nicht, dann ist auch die geplante Forschung nicht möglich. Das Anbahnen eines Feldzugangs ist entsprechend eine besonders kritische Phase des Forschungsprozesses, die grundsätzlich die Eigenschaft hat, krisenhaft zu sein oder es zu werden. Diesen Sachverhalt stellt der Band in den Mittelpunkt und versammelt Beiträge, die das krisenhafte Potential von Feldzugängen aus drei Perspektiven diskutieren: Erstens mit Blick auf veränderte und erschwerte äußere Rahmenbedingungen qualitativer Forschung (Der Feldzugang in der Krise); zweitens aus einer wissenssoziologischen Sicht (Der Feldzugang als krisenhafter Prozess) und drittens aus der Perspektive der Forschungsfelder und -gegenstände (Der Feldzugang als Krise für den Forschungsgegenstand?). In dieser Diskussion verfolgt der Band das Ziel, Feldzugänge sowohl unter forschungspraktischen und methodologischen Gesichtspunkten zu erörtern als auch den Feldzugang als Forschungsgegenstand zu reflektieren. Der Band gibt Anregungen für alle, die ein empirisches Forschungsprojekt durchführen wollen und für die diejenigen, die ihre eigene Forschungspraxis selbstreflexiv thematisieren.     Abstract: Why do some westerners seem to have a better relationship with Indigenous people than others? Using a narrative research methodology, the author explores the experience and wisdom of eight such participants to come to an understanding of why. He uses a broad sweep of ideas from anthropology, ethnohistory, multicultural education and cultural studies of science education, together with a model of identity learning. From anthropology the author traces ‘marginal man’ and ‘middleman’ to modern equivalents, border crosser (and hybrid) and culture broker. He uses a theory of identity learning to look at the response to culture shock as a passage into another culture (or not), a theory which includes both cognitive and affective or emotional components. The participants’ narratives are examined for early influences which brought them into contact with the indigenous peoples in the countries where they live. Considering that they experienced border crossings when working cross-culturally, they are located within a spectrum of border crossing positions. The participants’ ideas about being culture brokers are explored, along with their experiences in that role. These are organised into five areas leading to a deeper understanding the role of the culture broker. Finally, the participants consider how teachers in particular should behave in cross-cultural settings and the types of experiences they needed to become effective teachers and border crossers

    Abstract: This publication highlights how immigrants and their children are integrating into OECD societies, judging their progress against key indicators. Many areas are considered (material living conditions, health, education, labour market, civic engagement) as integration is a multi-dimensional issue. Measures of outcomes, as well as of progress made over the past decade, are presented in comparison with outcomes of a reference group (the population born in the country of residence). Three series of questions are addressed: 1) To what extent does the average performance of immigrants differ from that of the native-born?; 2) Can these differences be explained by structural effects (different distributions by age, educational level, etc.)?; 3) How has integration record evolved over the past decade? An introductory chapter provides a detailed description of the populations under review (foreign-born persons and households, as well as native-born offspring of immigrants). The final chapter gives an overview on discrimination issues, as this is one possible source of persistent disadvantages of immigrants and their children.
