Examples from U.S. presidential campaigns dominate the public imagination of digital campaigning. At the same time, it is important to recognize that the uses of digital media in politics vary considerably depending on campaign contexts and resources. This makes necessary the analysis of the use of digital media by parties and campaign organizations in varying temporal and international contexts instead of expecting the examples from the U.S. to apply globally. The chapter will proceed by a discussion of some of the dominant theoretical and empirical approaches to the study of digital campaigning. Such data - commonly referred to as digital trace data, process-generated data, or digital behavioural data - are increasingly available to us, but the goal of unlocking their potential remains elusive despite the emergence of specialized fields such as computational social science, which has produced an ample body of research based on this resource. Achieving that goal requires revisiting the foundations of research based on this data type, a thorough understanding of its unique characteristics, overcoming access barriers, understanding data generating processes, and rethinking the role of theory at the intersection between computer science and social science. This chapter discusses the origin and characteristics of such data, as well as the interdisciplinary challenges researchers face in accessing, understanding, and using it for research.

    Kurzfassung: Information and communications technology (ICT) skills are crucial for labour market success and full participation in society. Socioeconomic status (SES) inequality in the development of ICT skills would prevent disadvantaged children from reaping the benefits of the digital age. Besides, the digital divide in ICT literacy might add to the already well-documented large and persistent SES inequality in ‘hard’ skills—like math, reading, and science. This chapter studies the roots, evolution, and drivers of SES inequality in ICT literacy from age 8 to 15 in Germany. Drawing from the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), we highlight five main findings: (1) SES gaps in ICT literacy exist as early as age 8 (grade 3) and are similar in size compared to SES gaps in hard skills; (2) like hard skills, SES gaps in ICT literacy remain stable over primary and tracked lower secondary schooling; (3) ICT access and use at home and school do not substantially explain SES gaps in ICT literacy at any age; (4) selection into school tracks seems a critical pathway, although not necessarily a causal one, leading to SES inequality in secondary school; (5) SES gaps in ICT literacy are not observed among children with similar levels of hard skills. We discuss the implications of these findings for the interdisciplinary literature on social stratification, skill formation, and the digital divide.

    Kurzfassung: This chapters addresses digital inequalities in young people’s daily lives and well-being. The chapter examines how adolescents’ digital engagement differs across family socioeconomic status (SES) and gender, and how it relates to their mental health outcomes. Analyses use longitudinal data from the Growing Up in Ireland study from age 9 to 18, combined with cross-national data from the Health Behaviour in School-Aged survey on adolescents aged 11-15 across 35 industrialised countries. Longitudinal analyses reveal that low-SES adolescents and girls experience higher mental health problems as they increase their time using digital devices, compared to high-SES adolescents and boys. Cross-national analyses indicate that, while boys spend more time in digital activities, girls are at higher risks of experiencing mental health problems from engaging with digital activities. However, the magnitude of these gendered patterns differs markedly across national contexts. Cross-country comparisons on SES yield mixed results: in some countries low-SES adolescents are mentally more harmed by their digital engagement (i.e., Switzerland, Austria, Norway), but in other countries high-SES adolescents are those at higher mental health risks from using digital devices (i.e., Portugal, Czech Republic, Bulgaria). The chapter findings are discussed within the existing literature on digital inequalities and young people’s well-being.

    Kurzfassung: Die Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie Bruno Latours kennt kein Konzept des Fremden. Dies mag irritierend erscheinen, bedenkt man, dass die Figur des Fremden eines der zentralen Schlüsselkonzepte der Soziologie darstellt. Von Simmel bis Schütz stehen Fremdheit und der Fremde stets im Spannungsverhältnis zum Eigenen, welches gerade in der Begegnung des Fremden besonders sichtbar wird. Mit Werkzeugen der Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie entwirft Edda Mack eine soziologische Denkweise, die das Theoretisieren selbst in den Mittelpunkt soziologischer Forschung stellt. Am Beispiel der Fluchtmigrationsforschung zeigt sie auf, dass eine solche Denkweise in ihrer Umsetzung nah bei den Dingen von Belang bleiben kann.

    Kurzfassung: Malešević offers a novel sociological answer to the age-old question: 'Why do humans fight?'. Instead of focusing on the motivations of solitary individuals, he emphasises the centrality of the social and historical contexts that make fighting possible. He argues that fighting is not an individual attribute, but a social phenomenon shaped by one's relationships with other people. Drawing on recent scholarship across a variety of academic disciplines as well as his own interviews with the former combatants, Malešević shows that one's willingness to fight is a contextual phenomenon shaped by specific ideological and organisational logic. This book explores the role biology, psychology, economics, ideology, and coercion play in one's experience of fighting, emphasising the cultural and historical variability of combativeness. By drawing from numerous historical and contemporary examples from all over the world, Malešević demonstrates how social pugnacity is a relational and contextual phenomenon that possesses autonomous features

    Kurzfassung: Nach einer Fehl- oder Stillgeburt sind Betroffene mit der Vorstellung konfrontiert, es sei ja noch kein richtiges Kind gewesen, der Verlust sei entsprechend wenig betrauernswert. Julia Böcker geht empirisch der Frage nach, unter welchen Bedingungen es gesellschaftlich als legitim gilt, das vorzeitige Ende einer Schwangerschaft als Tod und Verlust eines Kindes zu behandeln. Im Ergebnis steht die Rekonstruktion subjektiver Verlusterfahrungen im Kontext der kulturellen Ordnungen um körperliche Materialität, medizinisch (un)bestimmtes Leben und soziale Personalität. Deutlich werden der Umgang mit Wissensgrenzen und das Paradox einer subjektverantworteten Trauerkultur in der Gegenwart.

    Kurzfassung: Wenn Übersetzungszwänge zwischen sozialen Sinnhorizonten den Kardinaleffekt sozialer Differenzierung bilden, kann eine entsprechende Soziologie multipler Differenzierung ihren eigenen Realitätsbezug, wie den jedes anderen Sinnzusammenhanges, nur als eine Art »indirekter Referenz« ausweisen.Joachim Renns Analyse geht einen medientheoretischen Umweg: Sie konzentriert sich zunächst auf die Bedeutung verschiedener Kommunikationsmedien für die eigenlogische Formatierung möglicher Gegenstände der Bezugnahme und erst dann auf die Referenzansprüche der Soziologie selbst. Es zeigt sich: Diese pragmatistische Rekonstruktion einer medialen »Welt-Erschließung« wird - anders als der weit verbreitete Konstruktivismus - der realistischen Intuition einer Soziologie als empirischer Wissenschaft gerecht
    Kurzfassung: When translation constraints between horizons of social meaning create the cardinal effect of social distinction, a pertinent sociology of multiple distinction can disclose its own reference to reality, such as that of any other context, only as a kind of »indirect reference«. Joachim Renn's analysis takes a media-theory detour: Initially it focuses on the meaning of different communication media for the formation of potential objects of reference that is logical in itself, and then it focuses on the reference claims of sociology itself. That shows: This pragmatic reconstruction of a medial »indexing of the world« does - unlike the widely-spread constructivism - justice to the realistic intuition of sociology as an empirical science

Diese Bestattungsethnografie fragt danach, wie gegenwärtig trotz knapper und strikter Zeitvorgaben der rituelle Abschied von den Toten umgesetzt wird. Dabei legt sie die Abhängigkeiten offen, die zwischen Zeitinstitutionen, Chronopolitiken, Singularitätsansprüchen, Serialität und der Kontingenz des Bestattungshandelns entstehen.

    Kurzfassung: Ostdeutsche werden im öffentlichen Diskurs gerne als Opfer der deutschen Einheit stilisiert. Tatsächlich haben sie sich von der friedlichen Revolution bis heute als mächtige politische Akteur*innen erwiesen. Detlef Pollack analysiert aus wissenschaftlicher Perspektive und mithilfe seiner persönlichen Erfahrungen als Zeitzeuge und Teilnehmer, wie sich dies bereits im revolutionären Umbruch von 1989 erkennen lässt. Denn die entscheidenden Dynamiken gingen nicht, wie vielfach behauptet, von einer kleinen Schar Oppositioneller aus, sondern von der breiten Bevölkerung selbst. Diese Macht des Volkes zeigt sich bis heute, wo die ostdeutsche Bevölkerung durch ihr Wahlverhalten und nicht zuletzt auch durch ihren Opferdiskurs wiederum Berücksichtigung einklagt. Am ostdeutschen Protestverhalten lässt sich begreifen, wie sich eine Bevölkerung zum Volk konstituiert - unter den Bedingungen von Diktatur und Demokratie.

    Kurzfassung: The Oxford Handbook of the Sociology of Body and Embodiment challenges the view that bodies belong to the category of “nature” and are biological, essential, and pre-social. It argues instead that bodies both shape and get shaped by human societies. As such, the body is an appropriate and necessary area of study for sociologists. The Handbook works to clarify the scope of this topic and display the innovations of research within the field. The volume is divided into three main parts: Bodies and Methodology; Marginalized Bodies; and Embodied Sociology. Sociologists contributing to the first two parts focus on the body and the ways it is given meaning, regulated, and subjected to legal and medical oversight in a variety of social contexts (particularly when the body in question violates norms for how a culture believes bodies “ought” to behave or appear). Sociologists contributing to the last part use the bodily as a lens through which to study social institutions and experiences. These social settings range from personal decisions about medical treatment to programs for teaching police recruits how to use physical force, from social movement tactics to countries’ understandings of race and national identity. Many chapters throughout the book offer extended methodological reflections, providing guidance on how to conduct sociological research on the body and, at times, acknowledging the role the authors’ own bodies play in developing their knowledge of the research subject.

    Kurzfassung: Climate change is a profoundly social and political challenge with many social justice concerns around every corner. A global issue, climate change threatens the well-being, livelihood, and survival of people in communities worldwide. Often, those who have contributed least to climate change are the most likely to suffer from its negative consequences and are often excluded from the policy discussions and decisions that affect their lives. This text pays particular attention to the social dimensions of climate change. It examines closely people's lived experience, climate-related injustice and inequity, why some groups are more vulnerable than others, and what can be done about it - especially through greater community inclusion in policy change.

Die ethnografische Studie von Ute Frings-Merck lässt die Akteurinnen zu Wort kommen, beschreibt ihr Changieren zwischen Nähe und Distanz, zeigt ihre widerstreitenden Ambitionen auf und entdeckt dabei kulturelle Imaginationen und Zuschreibungen, die den alltäglichen Praktiken zu Grunde liegen: Die Vergangenheit, die beide Nachbarländer verbindet, ist unausweichlich.

    Kurzfassung: Prototypen wandern aus den Werkstätten in die Gesellschaft. Sie gelten nicht länger als defizitäre, weil unvollständige Objekte. Vielmehr wird durch das Design des materiell Vorläufigen das gesellschaftliche Übermorgen gestaltet und technologisiert. Die Produktion und Rezeption verwandelt sich dabei von einer exklusiven Expertentätigkeit zu einer inklusiven sozialen Praxis: Prototypen werden in öffentlich zugänglichen Makerspaces produziert, in urbanen Eventformaten zelebriert und in Crowdfunding-Kampagnen präsentiert. Sascha Dickel zeigt, dass damit auch eine neue Form der Kritik einhergehen muss, die nicht gegen die Technologisierung des Sozialen opponiert, sondern Wege erschließt, in einer technologisch verbauten Welt alternative Technikzukünfte zu entwerfen.
