    Abstract: Die Entstehung der Soziologie lässt sich durch die berühmte Forderung Émile Durkheims zusammenfassen: Soziales nur durch Soziales erklären. Ihre Geschichte ist also mit dem Versprechen verknüpft, die soziale Wirklichkeit unter Ausschluss alles Nicht-Sozialen zu erforschen - womit die Perspektive auf den Menschen verdrängt wird. Doch kann der Mensch aus der Soziologie überhaupt verdrängt werden? Rafael Alvear Moreno reflektiert diese Frage im Hinblick auf die Beschreibung der Motive und Konsequenzen des genannten Versprechens anhand der Großtheorien von Jürgen Habermas und Niklas Luhmann. Seine Untersuchung wird dabei von der dialektischen Figur durchkreuzt, dass es keine Verdrängung ohne Einbeziehung gibt - was unmittelbar in eine soziologische Anthropologie führt.

    Abstract: From the sports trend of parkour, via the Old Testament, up to the Berlin squatting scene - the different contributions to this volume take up the challenge of rethinking questions about the entanglement of space and gender. Predominant interpretations of current societal phenomena as well as established research topics are examined in order to trace gendered power structures. Thus, resistant moves/tricks (Maschen) and powerful games/acts (Muster) are found in a wide range of topics reaching from observations of performative acts and discourse structures all the way to medial treatments. Political scientists and historians have debated whether such a "youth bulge" increases the potential for conflict or whether it represents a chance to accumulate wealth and push forward social and technological developments. This book introduces the discussion about youth bulge into social anthropology using Tajikistan, a post-Soviet country that experienced civil war in the 1990s, which is in the middle of such a demographic transition. Sophie Roche develops a social anthropological approach to analyze demographic and political dynamics, and suggests a new way of thinking about social change in youth bulge societies.

Für mich besonders eindrucksvoll gelungen erscheint der Nachweis einer sozialen Konstruktion des sogenannten 'Normalarbeitsverhältnisses', das die Arbeitsmarktpolitik bis in die Gegenwart so nachdrücklich und, wie ich meine, verhängnisvoll prägt. Erst nach Überwindung der 'alten Welt' konnte Lohnarbeit zur vorherrschenden Form der Erwerbstätigkeit werden. Zunächst prägten noch prekäre Arbeitsverhältnisse und instabile Beschäftigungsformen das Bild. Doch im Laufe der Entwicklung, insbesondere wegen des außerordentlich starken Wirtschaftswachstums und einer entsprechenden Wohlstandssteigerung des industriekapitalistischen Systems, gelang es mehr und mehr, auch die Erwerbsbiografien der Lohnarbeiter zu stabilisieren. Zum Leitbild einer Erwerbstätigkeit wurde nunmehr die vollständige (männliche) Erwerbsbiographie, das sogenannte 'Normalarbeitsverhältnis'. Zwar blieben Risikobiografien für zahlreiche Arbeiter auch weiterhin Realität, doch wurden sie in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung, insbesondere in den 'goldenen' 1960er und 1970er Jahren an den Rand gedrängt. Mittlerweile sind wir

    Abstract: How are national identities constructed and articulated through music? Popular music has long been associated with political dissent, and the nation state has consistently demonstrated a determination to seek out and procure for itself a stake in the management of 'its' popular musics. Similarly, popular musics have been used 'from the ground up' as sites for both populist and popular critiques of nationalist sentiment, from the position of both a globalizing and a 'local' vernacular culture. The contributions in this book arrive at a critical moment in the development of the study of national cultures and musicology. The book ranges from considerations of the ideological focus of cultural nationalism through to analyses of musical hybridity and musical articulations of other kinds of identities at odds with national identity. The processes of global homogenization are thereby shown to have brought about a transitional crisis for national cultural identities: the evolution of these identities, particularly with reference to the concept of 'authenticity' in music, is situated within broader debates on power, political economy and constructions of the self. Theorizations of practice are employed after the manner of Bourdieu, Gramsci, Goffman, Gadamer, Habermas, Bhabha, Lacan and Zizek. Each contribution acts as a case study to characterize the strategies through which differing modes of musical discourse engage, critique or obscure discourses on national identity. The studies include discussions of: musical representations of Irishness; the relationship between Afropop and World Music; Norwegian club music; the revival of traditional music in Serbia; resistance to cultural homogeneity in Brazil; contemporary Uyghur song in Northwest China; rap and race in French society; technobanda from the barrios of Los Angeles, and Spanish/Moroccan raï. A new word burst into popular usage to describe these descents into the precincts of poverty to see how the poor lived: slumming. In this captivating book, Seth Koven paints a vivid portrait of the practitioners of slumming and their world: who they were, why they went, what they claimed to have found, how it changed them, and how slumming, in turn, powerfully shaped both Victorian and twentieth-century understandings of poverty and social welfare, gender relations, and sexuality. The slums of late-Victorian London became synonymous with all that was wrong with industrial capitalist society. But for philanthropic men and women eager to free themselves from the starched conventions of bourgeois respectability and domesticity, slums were also places of personal liberation and experimentation. Slumming allowed them to act on their irresistible "attraction of repulsion" for the poor and permitted them, with society's approval, to get dirty and express their own "dirty" desires for intimacy with slum dwellers and, sometimes, with one another. Slumming elucidates the histories of a wide range of preoccupations about poverty and urban life, altruism and sexuality that remain central in Anglo-American culture, including the ethics of undercover investigative reporting, the connections between cross-class sympathy and same-sex desire, and the intermingling of the wish to rescue the poor with the impulse to eroticize and sexually exploit them.     Abstract: Language as Cultural Practice: Mexicanos en el Norte offers a vivid ethnographic account of language socialization practices within Mexican-background families residing in California and Texas. This account illustrates a variety of cases where language is used by speakers to choose between alternative self-definitions and where language interacts differentially with other defining categories, such as ethnicity, gender, and class. It shows that language socialization--instantiated in language choices and patterns of use in sociocultural and sociohistorical contexts characterized by ambiguity and flux--is both a dynamic and a fluid process. The study emphasizes the links between familial patterns of language use and language socialization practices on the one hand, and children's development of bilingual and biliterate identities on the other. Using a framework emerging from their selection of two geographically distinct localities with differing demographic features, Schecter and Bayley compare patterns of meaning suggested by the use of Spanish and English in speech and literacy activities, as well as by the symbolic importance ascribed by families and societal institutions (such as schools) to the maintenance and use of the two languages.
