The author moves beyond traditional boundaries of Egyptological and Papyrological research by means of an innovative and interdisciplinary methodology - zigzagging back and forth between archaeological field survey, close reading of ancient texts, formal methods of Social Network Analysis (SNA) and explanatory theories and concepts borrowed from economics and other social sciences."--

Abstract: "Thousands of intact ceramic bowls and plates as well as fragments made in the medieval Byzantine empire survive to this day. Decorated with figural and non-figural imagery applied in a variety of techniques and adorned with colourful paints and glazes, the vessels can tell us much about those who owned them and those who looked at them. In addition to innumerable ceramic vessels, a handful of precious metal bowls and plates survive from the period. Together, these objects make up the art of dining in medieval Byzantium. This art of dining was effervescent, at turns irreverent and deadly serious, visually stunning and fun. It is suggestive of ways in which those viewing the objects used a quotidian and biologically necessary (f)act - that of eating - to reflect on their lives and deaths, their aspirations and their realities. This book examines the ceramic and metal vessels in terms of the information offered on the foods eaten, the foods desired and their status; the spectacle of the banquet; the relationship between word and image in medieval Byzantium; the dangers of taste; the emergence of new moral and social ideals; and the use of dining as a tool in constructing and enforcing hierarchy. This book is of appeal to scholarly and non-scholarly audiences interested in the art and material culture of the medieval period and in the social history of food and eating"--

Abstract: In dieser Dissertation untersuche ich verschiedene Aspekte des Integrationsprozesses von Migranten und Flüchtlingen, insbesondere wie sich ihre Präsenz auf die Protestaktivitäten und Einstellungen von Einheimischen auswirkt. Die vier Kapitel bauen auf der bestehenden Literatur auf und zielen darauf ab, diese in mehreren Aspekten zu ergänzen. Das erste und das zweite Kapitel verbessern unser Verständnis der kausalen Auswirkungen der Bedingungen im Heimatland auf die Rückkehrabsichten und die Arbeitsmarktintegration von Migranten im Zielland sowie das Verständnis der Auswirkungen traumatischer Erfahrungen während der Flucht auf die Arbeitsmarktintegration von Flüchtlingen. Das dritte Kapitel befasst sich mit der soziokulturellen Integration von Familienmigranten in einem Land, das nicht ihre erste Wahl darstellt. Das vierte Kapitel untersucht die Auswirkungen der Anwesenheit von Ausländern auf die Protestaktivität einer bestimmten Gruppe von Einheimischen und wie sich diese Proteste auf die Besorgnis über Fremdenfeindlichkeit und Intoleranz auf nationaler Ebene auswirken. Die Ergebnisse der Dissertation sollen die politischen Entscheidungsträger über die potenziellen Nebenwirkungen der Migrationspolitik informieren und empirische Erkenntnisse liefern, die zur Verbesserung bestehender und zur besseren Gestaltung künftiger politischer Maßnahmen beitragen.

Abstract: In this PhD thesis, I look at different aspects of the integration process of migrants and refugees, and how their presence affects the protest activity and attitudes of natives. The four chapters build on and aim to extend the existing literature along several dimensions. The first and second chapters improve our understanding of the causal effect of home country conditions on migrants' return intentions and labour market outcomes at destination and of the effect of traumatizing experiences along the journey on refugees' labour market integration. The third chapter explores the socio-cultural integration of family migrants in a country that was not their primary choice, while the fourth chapter examines the effect of the presence of foreigners on the protest activity of a particular group of natives and how these protests affect worries about xenophobia and intolerance at the national level. The findings in the dissertation aim to inform policymakers on the potential side-effect of migration policies and to provide empirical evidence that help improve existing policies and better design future ones.eral dimensions.

Abstract: Terrorismus ist noch immer eines der bedrohlichsten Phänomene der heutigen Zeit. In diesem Buch werden mithilfe von Gerichtsakten vom Generalbundesanwalt beim Bundesgerichtshof in Karlsruhe die Radikalisierungsprozesse von 58 deutschen Jihadisten analysiert. Durch das umfassende Datenmaterial ist es möglich, die Wege dieser Personen von der Radikalisierung bis zum Anschluss an eine terroristische Organisation im Ausland (u.a. Islamischer Staat) sowie ausgeübte strafrechtlich relevante Handlungen zu rekonstruieren. Mithilfe einer Netzwerkanalyse wird das radikale Netzwerk untersucht, das aus Deutschland mit Jihadkämpfern im In- und Ausland verbunden gewesen ist. Dabei wird ein Augenmerk auf den Aufbau, die Funktionsweise und die Schlüsselpersonen des Netzwerks gelegt. Auch werden die unterschiedlichen Rollen und Unterstützungshandlungen der Netzwerkmitglieder in den Fokus genommen. Zusätzlich werden strafrechtlich relevante Radikalisierungs- und Mobilisierungsstrategien salafistisch-jihadistischer Prediger entschlüsselt, die weitaus tiefere Verbindungen zu terroristischen Organisationen im Ausland haben als bisher angenommen. Die Autorin Kristin Weber ist Kriminologin, Soziologin und wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin im Bereich der Radikalisierungs-, Terrorismus- und Extremismusforschung. An der Deutschen Hochschule der Polizei in Münster-Hiltrup hat sie ihre Dissertation im Rahmen des Projektes X-Sonar "Analyse extremistischer Bestrebungen in sozialen Netzwerken", welches vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung gefördert wurde, geschrieben.

Abstract: Diese Dissertation aus der Sparte der Reflexiven Bibliometrie erforscht die Rückwirkungen der Verwendung von quantitativen Indikatoren in der Wissenschaftsevaluation auf die Wissensproduktion und Forschungsqualität in der Astronomie. Eine qualitative Analyse der strukturellen Bedingungen der akamdeischen Astronomie anhand des Rational Choice Frameworks führen zur Beobachtung eines "Evaluation Gap" zwischen dem, was Indikatoren messen und dem, was Forscher unter Forschungsqualität verstehen. Die Analyse offenbart weiters einen Balanceakt, in dem Astronomen zwischen Publikationsdruck und Forschungsintegrität Kompromisse finden. Weiterführende quantitative Untersuchungen unter Einbezug von Organisational Culture Theories und Self-Determination Theory zeigen, dass kontrollierte Formen von Motivation zu einem erhöhten Publikationsdruck und wissenschaftlichem Fehlverhalten führen, während autonome Formen von Motivation das Gegenteil bewirken. Schließlich skizziert die Arbeit Wege zur Transformation der Forschungskultur hin zu mehr Vielfalt und Partizipation, einschließlich der Einführung offener Wissensmanagement-Infrastrukturen und kontinuierlicher, reflexiver Evaluationsprozesse.

Abstract: This dissertation from the field of Reflexive Bibliometrics, investigates the constitutive effects of utilizing quantitative metrics in research evaluation on knowledge production and research quality in astronomy. Embedded in the Rational Choice Framework to analyze the structural conditions within academic astronomy, a qualitative analysis reveals an "Evaluation Gap" between what metrics measure and researchers' perceptions of research quality. Furthermore, the analysis unveils a balancing act where astronomers navigate compromises between publication pressures and research integrity. Subsequent quantitative analyses, incorporating Organizational Culture Theories and Self-Determination Theory, demonstrate that controlled forms of motivation exacerbate publication pressure and scientific misconduct, while autonomous motivations yield contrasting effects. Lastly, the study outlines pathways towards transforming research culture towards greater diversity and participation, including the adoption of open knowledge management infrastructures and continuous, reflexive evaluation processes.

Abstract: During his four years as the tenth Chancellor of Berkeley (2013-17), Nicholas B. Dirks was confronted by crises arguably more challenging than those faced by any other college administrator in the contemporary period. Abstract: In recounting their migration journey, references to nationality pervade the narratives of Zimbabweans in South Africa. Given the challenges many migrants confront based on their nationality, this presents a seeming paradox. This qualitative interview study, conducted with Zimbabwean migrants in two areas of Cape Town—Observatory and Dunoon—aims to elucidate the nuances of national self-descriptions in a demanding environment. Identifying as Zimbabwean serves as a sanctuary and a retreat, where alternative identifications often prove transient; embracing Zimbabweanness fosters an affirmative and positive self-perception, surpassing the limitations of other collective self-descriptions. Rather than pre-emptively characterizing a nationalist demeanour, the articulation of national self-description emerges as a strategic tool to navigate experiences of hostility and discrimination, while also asserting legitimate claims to equal opportunities. In this way, nationality takes a trajectory that diverges from conventional notions of nationality (and the ones of the nation-state or citizenship) as per Northern theory, contributing to alternative conceptualizations within the framework of the Global South. About the author Johannes Kögel studied philosophy and sociology in Munich and Cape Town. He currently works as a research associate at the University of Munich (LMU München). He has conducted social research on diverse topics such as brain-computer interfaces, xenotransplantation, and migration in South Africa. .

Diese Kybernetisierung des Selbst knüpft die Aussicht auf individuelle Autonomie an die Technisierung von Feedback und wird von Noji in ihren Ambivalenzen diskutiert. Der Autor Eryk Noji ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Lehrgebiet Soziologische Gegenwartsdiagnosen an der FernUniversität in Hagen und Koordinator der interdisziplinären Forschungsgruppe Figurationen von Unsicherheit. Abstract: Der Begriff der Produktivität findet täglich Verwendung, um die eigene Leistung zu bewerten. Darin, so die These, zeigt sich ein problematisches Verhältnis zur eigenen Tätigkeit. Denn was bedeutet Produktivität? Die Autorin geht von dem antiken weiten Verständnis von Produktivität als generellem Wirkprinzip aus und zeigt, wie sich Vorstellungen in Bezug auf das, was als produktiv gilt, gewandelt haben. Heute dominiert das ökonomische Verständnis, das die Beziehung zwischen Input (hervorbringender Natur) und Output (hervorgebrachter Natur) quantifiziert. Produktiv ist der Mensch, wenn er viel schafft – und nicht, wenn er ‚sich hervorbringt‘. Die Autorin entwickelt einen neuen Produktivitätsbegriff, der die menschliche Fähigkeit zu produktiver Selbstwerdung ins Zentrum stellt. So entsteht auch ein neuer Blick auf (humanistisch) produktive Arbeit, der diese nicht an Effizienzmaximen, sondern der Beziehung des Subjekts zur Tätigkeit festmacht. Zugleich soll Systemproduktivität im Subjekt verwurzelt werden: Das (wirtschaftliche) System gilt nicht mehr als produktiv, wenn es kurzfristig Gewinne, sondern nur, wenn es langfristig Bedingungen für Individual(re)produktivität bereitstellt. Der Begriff der Produktivität wird so (wieder) als Vermittlungsbegriff fruchtbar gemacht. Die Autorin Hannah Schragmann arbeitet in einem Start-Up daran, positiven Impact auf die SDGs zu skalieren und forscht zugleich zu neuen Ansätzen der (Re)Produktivitätsbemessung, die ökologisch-soziale Auswirkungen internalisieren.

Abstract: Poverty and inequality have pervaded British society to this day, but this has not always been self-evident to contemporaries - popular understandings have depended on existing knowledge. Inequality Knowledge provides the first detailed history of the numbers about the gap between rich and poor. It shows how they were produced, used, and suppressed at times, and how activists, scientists, and journalists eventually wrestled control over the figures from the state. The book traces the making and the politics of statistical knowledge about economic inequality in the United Kingdom from the post-war era to the 1990s. What kind of knowledge was available to contemporaries about socio-economic disparities in Britain and how they evolved over time? How was this knowledge produced and by whom? What did policy makers and civil servants know about the extent of poverty and inequality in British society and to what extent did they take the distributional impact of their social and fiscal policies into account? Far from just a technical matter, inequality knowledge had far-reaching implications for key debates and the wider political culture in contemporary Britain. Historicizing inequality knowledge speaks to a long tradition of historical research about social class divisions and cultural representations of economic disparities in twentieth-century Britain.

Abstract: In diesem Open-Access-Buch geht es um die Frage, wie Leser*innen in Deutschland automatisiert generierte Nachrichten wahrnehmen und welche Bedeutung sie den Verfahren im Journalismus zuschreiben. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage, ob das Publikum dem automatisierten Journalismus vertraut und welche Einflussfaktoren bei dieser Entscheidung eine Rolle spielen. Zur empirischen Überprüfung wurden Focus Groups mit gezielt rekrutierten Leser*innen eingesetzt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass es keine monokausalen Antworten auf die Frage nach dem Vertrauen der Lesenden in automatisierten Journalismus gibt. Grundsätzlich stehen sie dem Technologieeinsatz neutral und gleichzeitig neugierig sowie – vor allem mit Blick auf die Zukunft – skeptisch gegenüber. Die Teilnehmenden fordern einen transparenten Umgang der Medienorganisationen mit automatisierter Berichterstattung und wollen mehr Informationen zum Einsatz, zur Verbreitung und zur Technologie haben. Als Einflussfaktoren auf die Vertrauensbewertung wurden ausgewählte Personen- sowie Text- und Publikationsmerkmale und Eigenschaften des Untersuchungsgegenstands getestet. Hohe Relevanz haben erkennbar die Angst vor gezielter Manipulation, die individuellen Vorstellungen über Künstliche Intelligenzen sowie die Kontingenz von Texten. Die Autorin Theresa Körner hat 2023 am Institut für Kommunikationswissenschaft der Otto-Friedrich Universität Bamberg zum Thema Vertrauen der Lesenden in Automatisierten Journalismus promoviert.

Abstract: Obdachlose gehören zum städtischen Alltag. Sie sind sichtbar und werden zugleich kaum wahrgenommen. Nadine Recktenwald blickt in die historischen Räume der Obdachlosen wie Asyle, Notunterkünfte und selbstangeeignete Orte. Sie untersucht deren Erfahrungen mit urbanen Strukturen, sozialstaatlichen Maßnahmen und gesellschaftlicher In- und Exklusion. In der Weimarer Republik profitierten Obdachlose erstmals von kommunaler Sozialfürsorge. Zugleich blieb Obdachlosigkeit bis 1974 ein Straftatbestand. Diese Ambivalenz zwischen Fürsorge und Strafe ermöglichte Handlungsspielräume für die Betroffenen ebenso wie für die staatlichen Akteure. Insbesondere aber nicht nur im Nationalsozialismus wurden Obdachlose verdrängt und verfolgt. Mit einem raumanalytischen Ansatz, umfangreichen Quellen und Einzelbiografien erforscht die Autorin, wie Obdachlose spezifische soziale Praktiken ausbildeten, um ihre gesellschaftliche Position zu beeinflussen. Eindrucksvoll zeigt sie die Interaktionen der Betroffenen untereinander ebenso wie mit Ämtern, der Justiz und den städtischen Öffentlichkeiten. Eine aufschlussreiche Sozial- und Stadtgeschichte der Obdachlosen in der Weimarer Republik, im Nationalsozialismus und in der Bundesrepublik.

Abstract: Die Arbeit behandelt grundlegende Fragen der strafbaren Verletzung der Unterhaltspflicht. Sie umfasst das durch § 170 I StGB zu schützende Rechtsgut ebenso wie eine mögliche Bindungswirkung zivilgerichtlicher Entscheidungen sowie die Rechtsfolgen dieser Straftat. Als zur Legitimation des § 170 I StGB hinreichend gewichtiges Rechtsgut wird allein der notwendige Lebensbedarf des Unterhaltsberechtigten erkannt. Anders als Statusentscheidungen entfalten familiengerichtliche Entscheidungen zum Ob und zur Höhe einer Unterhaltspflicht im Strafverfahren keine Bindungswirkung.
