    Abstract: Hate speech has been extensively studied by disciplines such as social psychology, sociology, history, politics and law. Some significant areas of study have been the origins of hate speech in past and modern societies around the world; the way hate speech paves the way for harmful social movements; the socially destructive force of propaganda; and the legal responses to hate speech. On reviewing the literature, one major weakness stands out: hate speech, a crime perpetrated primarily by malicious and damaging language use, has no significant study in the field of linguistics. Historically, pragmatic theories have tended to address language as cooperative action, geared to reciprocally informative polite understanding. As a result of this idealized view of language, negative types of discourse such as harassment, defamation, hate speech, etc. have been neglected as objects of linguistic study. Since they go against social, moral and legal norms, many linguists have wrongly depicted those acts of wrong communication as unusual, anomalous or deviant when they are, in fact, usual and common in modern societies all over the world.The book analyses the challenges legal practitioners and linguists must meet when dealing with hate speech, especially with the advent of new technologies and social networks, and takes a linguistic perspective by targeting the knowledge the linguist can provide that makes harassment actionable

    Abstract: Über kaum ein anderes Land wird in Deutschland so viel geredet und gestritten: Zu Israel hat jeder eine Meinung. Warum ist das so? Wieso hat der Nahostkonflikt eine solche Bedeutung? Und warum ist die Debatte so emotional – und oft so vergiftet? Als Meron Mendel vor zwanzig Jahren nach Deutschland kam, stellte er überrascht fest, welche Bedeutung sein Heimatland Israel hier im öffentlichen Diskurs hatte. Schon damals konnten nahezu alle, mit denen er sprach, klare Positionen zu Israel und seiner Politik formulieren. Heute werden die Debatten noch heftiger geführt. Zuletzt haben sich Skandale aneinandergereiht – vom öffentlichen Streit um den antiisraelischen Philosophen Achille Mbembe im Jahr 2020 bis zur Documenta-Debatte von 2022. Einerseits wird eine Art „Freundschaftspflicht“ aufgrund der NS-Vergangenheit und dem andauernden Antisemitismus in Deutschland proklamiert. Andererseits stellt sich die Frage, wie Deutschland auf den sich verschärfenden Rechtskurs der Regierung in Jerusalem reagieren soll. Meron Mendel schildert in diesem Buch, wie das Verhältnis zu Israel und zum Nahostkonflikt in Deutschland verhandelt wird, in der Politik und in den Medien, unter Linken, unter Migranten und unter Juden.

    Abstract: Auch im 21. Jahrhundert besitzt die Religion in Osteuropa enorme politische Sprengkraft. Dass die orthodoxen Kirchen eng mit Staaten und Nationalitäten verbunden sind, zeigt der Ukrainekrieg in dramatischer Weise: Kein anderer als der Moskauer Patriarch unterstützt die Kriegsrhetorik des Kremls derart deutlich. Aber auch in der Ukraine und in anderen Staaten Osteuropas haben die orthodoxen Kirchen hohe politische Relevanz. Dies ist bemerkenswert, war doch Osteuropa für einen Großteil des 20. Jahrhunderts durch einen atheistischen Staat geprägt: die Sowjetunion. Während heute große Teile der Bevölkerung kaum Religion in ihrem Alltag praktizieren, wird die Zugehörigkeit zum orthodoxen Christentum immer mehr zum politischen Bekenntnis. Dieses Buch untersucht die komplexen Beziehungen zwischen Religion und Politik in Osteuropa und verbindet dabei Perspektiven auf das aktuelle Geschehen mit historischen Hintergründen.

    Abstract: "Linguistic Choices in the Contemporary City focuses on how individuals navigate conversation in highly diversified contexts and provides a broad overview of state of the art research in urban sociolinguistics across the globe. Bearing in mind the impact of international travel and migration, the book accounts for the shifting contemporary studies to the workings of language choices of and between individuals in places where people with many different backgrounds meet and exchange ideas. It specifically addresses how people handle language use challenges in a broad range of settings to present themselves positively and meet their information and identity goals. While a speaker's experience runs like a thread through this volume, the linguistic, cultural and situational focus is as broad as possible. It runs from the language choices of Chinese immigrants to Beijing and Finnish immigrants to Japan to the use of the local lingua franca by motor taxi drivers in Ngaoundéré, Cameroon, and how Hungarian students in their dorm rooms express views on political correctness uninhibitedly. As it turns out, language play, improvisation, humour, lies, as well as highly marked subconscious pronunciation choices are natural parts of the discourses, and this volume provides numerous and extensive examples of these techniques. For each of the settings discussed, the perspective is taken of personalised linguistic and extra-linguistic styles in tackling communicative challenges.     Abstract: Wenigen anderen Ethnologen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland war es vergönnt, so wie Rüdiger Schott durch eigene Aktivitäten als individuelle Forscherpersönlichkeit maßgebend zum Aufbau und Ausbau ihrer Disziplin beizutragen. Dieser Umstand verdankt sich einerseits den von ihm seit den 60er Jahren durchgeführten Feldforschungen bei den Bulsa in Nordghana und den in den 80er Jahren angestellten ethnographischen Erhebungen bei den Lyela in Burkina Faso (vormals: Obervolta), die ihm internationale Reputation und hohe wissenschaftliche Anerkennung eingetragen haben, andererseits der permanenten Umsetzung der erreichten Forschungsergebnisse in die akademische Lehre und in weitere Forschungen, die heute als beispielhaft gelten.
    Abstract: Nicht von ungefähr gehört das Seminar für Völkerkunde der Universität Münster, das von Rüdiger Schott begründet wurde und im April 1990 auf sein 25jähriges Bestehen zurückblicken konnte, gegenwärtig zu den auch im Ausland wohlbekannten deutschen Forschungsstätten seines Fachgebiets. Dies ist nicht zuletzt deswegen der Fall, weil Schott von Anbeginn seine ethnologischen Forschungen in ständigem Austausch mit einer Reihe benachbarter Disziplinen, insbesondere mit den sozialen Handlungswissenschaften betrieben hat, wie beispielsweise mit den Wirtschaftswissenschaften und der Soziologie, der Rechtswissenschaft und den Religionswissenschaften.
    Abstract: Seine Befähigung und bis auf den heutigen Tag praktizierte Bereitschaft zur Kooperation mit diesen Nachbardisziplinen basiert auf der Einsicht, daß die Ethnologie ihre eigene Identität nur gewinnen und fortentwickeln kann, wenn sie sich auch auf der Ebene der Ausbildung ihrer analytischen Denkansätze und Grundbegriffe hierfür hinreichend kontaktfähig hält. Was Person, Leben und Werk von Rüdiger Schott angeht, so sind die äußeren Rahmendaten seines bisherigen Forscher- und Universitätslebens rasch berichtet. Jedoch wird eine auf die Forschungsinhalte und die erzielten Ergebnisse gerichtete Analyse den von ihm vorgelegten Resultaten kaum gerecht, wenn sie sich nur auf deren Relevanz für die Ethnologie als solche beschränken wollte.

    Abstract: Sabine Exner-Krikorian untersucht in dieser Studie den Diskurs über die gleichgeschlechtliche Ehe in Deutschland von 1998 bis 2017. Sie geht der Frage nach, wie zeitgenössische religiöse, politische und gesellschaftliche Akteur*innen um die Deutungshoheit von Ehe wetteifern. Im Detail wird gezeigt, dass die Diskursakteur*innen in diesem Aushandlungsprozess die Prämisse einer angenommenen Moderne, die Dichotomie religiös/säkular sowie Narrative von und über Religion(en) als diskursive Strategien einsetzen. Eingebettet ist die Analyse in eine historische Rekonstruktion der Ehe seit der Reformation als Deutungs- und Machtkampf politischer und religiöser Akteur*innen. Mit einem zeit-, akteurs- und arenaspezifischen Ansatz verknüpft die Autorin methodologisch die Wissenssoziologische Diskursanalyse (WDA) nach Reiner Keller mit einem religionswissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisinteresse.
