Abstract: Introduction -- From sensorial capacities to symbolic forms (with particular reference to odor and color) -- The morphogenesis of symbolic forms in music -- The morphogenesis of visual symbolic forms (art, architecture, and urban structures) -- The morphogenesis and self-organization of myth and religion -- The morphogenesis of language and morphodynamic grammar -- Peirce’s semiotics, Cassirer’s philosophy of culture, and the epistemology of semiotics -- Final reflections.
Abstract: In the present book, the starting line is defined by a morphogenetic perspective on human communication and culture. The focus is on visual communication, music, religion (myth), and language, i.e., on the “symbolic forms” at the heart of human cultures (Ernst Cassirer). The term “morphogenesis” has more precisely the meaning given by René Thom (1923-2002) in his book “Morphogenesis and Structural Stability” (1972) and the notions of “self-organization” and cooperation of subsystems in the “Synergetics” of Hermann Haken (1927- ). The naturalization of communication and cultural phenomena is the favored strategy, but the major results of the involved disciplines (art history, music theory, religious science, and linguistics) are respected. Visual art from the Paleolithic to modernity stands for visual communication. The present book focuses on studies of classical painting and sculpture (e.g., Leonardo da Vinci, William Turner, and Henry Moore) and modern art (e.g., Jackson Pollock and Joseph Beuys). Musical morphogenesis embraces classical music (from J. S. Bach to Arnold Schönberg) and political songwriting (Bob Dylan, Leonhard Cohen). The myths of pre-literary societies show the effects of self-organization in the re-assembly (bricolage) of traditions. Classical polytheistic and monotheistic religions demonstrate the unfolding of basic germs (religious attractors) and their reduction in periods of crisis, the self-organization of complex religious networks, and rationalized macro-structures (in theologies). Significant tendencies are analyzed in the case of Buddhism and Christianism. Eventually, a holistic view of symbolic communication and human culture emerges based on state-of-the-art in evolutionary biology, cognitive science, linguistics, and semiotics (philosophy of symbolic forms).

Abstract: “This is a masterful examination of fantasy films and television series, and the ways that they illustrate political themes. The book effectively employs constructivist theory to show how fantasy franchise norms, values, and institutions have changed over time. Looking in detail at Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, the Harry Potter movies, along with fairytales and children’s tales, readers gain a sense of the usefulness of these stories as vehicles for understanding politics. They also come to appreciate these movies and TV shows as allegories of contemporary politics and international relations.” —Hieyeon Keum, University of Seoul, South Korea “Fantasy movies create…a broad canvas on which authors and filmmakers weave amazing yarns that express our fondest hopes and greatest fears. This book is one of the best studies of fantasy films and television and their expression of political ideas. I was particularly struck by the author’s illustration of the changing roles of women and girls in many of these stories, as female empowerment recently has become a major theme of fantasy projects. You can learn much about both fantasy stories and politics. Buy this book.” —Barry Pollick, Okinawa University, Japan This book uses several fantasy movies or movie series and television series to explain political and international relations (IR) concepts and theories. It indicates the importance of fantasy in literature, film and television, and its increasing impact on politics and International Relations. It then presents the political, IR, and social issues in each franchise, and in five chapters uses these tales’ key story arcs or plot points to illustrate major political and IR themes. The volume pays particular attention to such fantasy franchises as Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, the Harry Potter films, recent fairytale and children’s stories, and female-led fantasy projects. Joel R. Campbell is Associate Professor of political science at Troy University. He teaches in the Masters of Science in International Relations (MSIR) program in Troy's Pacific Region (Japan and Korea).

Western Exceptionalism: The Rule of Law, Judicial Independence and Transparency -- 5. Western Exceptionalism: Human Rights -- 6. Western Exceptionalism: Contribution to Science and Technology -- 7. Western Supremacy: The Views of Huntington, Fukuyama and Ferguson -- 8. The Western Economic System -- 9. Further Thoughts on Western Exceptionalism.
Abstract: In this book, the author attempts to debunk some myths about Western exceptionalism and to evaluate critically the characteristics that make the West superior to the Rest. The author suggests that the West does not represent a homogenous group of countries and that the most common characteristic of the core Western countries is imperialism. The author goes on to provide a detailed critique of the proclaimed characteristics of Western countries, including democracy, human rights, judicial independence, transparency, the rule of law, and exclusive contribution to science and technology. A critique is presented of the views expressed by Samuel Huntington, Francis Fukuyama, and Niall Ferguson, arguing that they do not recognize the historical fact that civilizations rise and fall. It is argued that the Western economic system, which is based on neoliberalism, has adverse consequences for democracy, morality, and peace, as well as inequality, poverty, and homelessness. Written in a simple but powerful language, this book is a must read for those interested in international relations and anyone interested in current affairs. Imad Moosa is Professor of Economics at Kuwait University. He has also held academic positions at RMIT, Monash University, La Trobe University, and the University of Sheffield. He has published 31 books and over 250 papers in scholarly journals. His latest books are about the Economics of COVID-19, Fintech, and Financialization.

Abstract: The Global IR research programme promulgates a borderless ecology of cultures that has only an inside without an outside. This borderless ecology of cultures reinvents the human condition (including the condition of ‘the international’) as perpetually interconnected at the level of consciousness. While Western-centric IR theories depend on (neo-)Kantian philosophies to emphasize the time-space bounded identities of human beings living in visibly divided phenomenal worlds, the de-Kantian philosophies of the Global IR research programme – exemplified by the Tianxia, Advaita, and Nishida Kitaro’s Buddhism-inspired theories – recuperate the temporally-spatially indivisible phenomenal-noumenal flow of human life, thereby facilitating back-and-forth movement between the Westdominated ‘one world’ and the non-West-embodied ‘many worlds’. The central objective of the book is to demonstrate how this back-and-forth movement offers opportunities to conceive of and found a new world order that recognizes the temporally-spatially indivisible human condition on earth. The book delineates a set of guiding principles to promote an innovative practice of theory-building and policy-making that transcends the geo-centric limitations of knowledgeproduction and knowledge-application, thereby establishing the futuristic foundation of the Global IR research programme. Deepshikha Shahi is Associate Professor of Politics and International Relations at the O. P. Jindal Global University, India.

Abstract: Food is more than just nutrition. Its preparation, presentation and consumption is a multifold communicative practice which includes the meal's design and its whole field of experience. How is food represented in cookbooks, product packaging or in paintings? How is dining semantically charged? How is the sensuality of eating treated in different cultural contexts? In order to acknowledge the material and media-related aspects of eating as a cultural praxis, experts from media studies, art history, literary studies, philosophy, experimental psychology, anthropology, food studies, cultural studies and design studies share their specific approaches

Abstract: This book is of interest to practitioners, researchers and graduate students seeking to apply existing techniques, to learn about the state of the art, or to explore novel concepts, in the theory and application of fuzzy sets and logic. Human knowledge and judgement are essential in both designing technological systems and in evaluating their outcomes. However, humans think and communicate in imprecise concepts, not numbers. Fuzzy sets and logic are well-known, widely used approaches to bridging this gap, which have been studied for nearly 60 years. NAFIPS 2022 brought together researchers studying both the theoretical foundations of fuzzy logic and its application to real-world problems. Their work examined fuzzy solutions to problems as diverse as astronomy, chemical engineering, economics, energy engineering, health care, and transportation engineering. Many papers combined fuzzy logic with interval or probabilistic computing, neural networks, and genetic algorithms.

Abstract: The book addresses the challenge of living in a multilingual world from three perspectives: socio-linguistics and the study of multilingualism in contrast, philosophy of technology with its emphasis on the world as a technosphere—how it is made, how it is experienced, and how it can be managed, and then pedagogy and the question of teaching and learning to competently negotiate multilingual environments. In today‘s multicultural and multilingual world, technologies provide a common ground. The story of the technosphere as a multilingual environment offers new perspective, namely that of learning to cooperate and coordinate.

Abstract: This book examines prisons and imprisonment. Historically, prisons and prisoners have been a source of interest to the general public. However, despite near universal acceptance of imprisonment as a feature of society, the reality of prison life, and the effects it has on individuals and communities, remain a mystery to many. Using academic scholarship, empirical research, government papers, policy reports, and accounts from lived experiences of the institution, this book analyses the complexities and contradictions of prison life, the place of the prison in twenty-first century society, and its prospects for the future. It introduces readers to key debates surrounding the use of imprisonment, and encourages readers to interrogate conventional perspectives on an institution that reflects the society in which it is situated. Abstract: Selfies zählen längst zum alltäglichen Medienhandeln.

Abstract: Russia's large-scale invasion on the 24th of February 2022 once again made Ukraine the focus of world media. Behind those headlines remain the complex developments in Ukraine's history, national identity, culture and society. Addressing readers from diverse backgrounds, this volume approaches the history of Ukraine and its people through primary sources, from the early modern period to the present. Each document is followed by an essay written by an expert on the period, and a conversational piece touching on the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine. In this ground-breaking collection, Ukraine's history is sensitively accounted for by scholars inviting the readers to revisit the country's history and culture. With a foreword by Olesya Khromeychuk

Abstract: This book describes new techniques for making decisions in situations with uncertainty and new applications of decision-making techniques. The main emphasis is on situations when it is difficult to decrease uncertainty. For example, it is very difficult to accurately predict human economic behavior, so in economics, it is very important to take this uncertainty into account when making decisions. Other areas where it is difficult to decrease uncertainty are geosciences and teaching. The book analyzes the general problem of decision making and shows how its results can be applied to economics, geosciences, and teaching. Since all these applications involve computing, the book also shows how these results can be applied to computing, including deep learning and quantum computing. The book is recommended to researchers, practitioners, and students who want to learn more about decision making under uncertainty—and who want to work on remaining challenges.

Abstract: Supply Chain Management -- Performance Evaluation of Supply Chain Management -- Main models and approaches in supply chain evaluation -- Supplier Performance Evaluation Models -- Examining supply chain crises and disruptions -- Data Envelopment Analysis -- Supplier selection.
Abstract: The authors of this book tried to make these experiences available to those interested, considering the experience of several years of training, research, and implementation of projects in the supply chain performance evaluation field. This book intends to identify the current performance and competitive position of that supply chain compared to other supply chains by presenting and reviewing the techniques and models for measuring the efficiency and performance of the supply chain. Determining the performance of a supply chain is a good description of the status quo (what is). Determining the performance of a supply chain is useful for describing the past and present of supply chain processes, and on the other hand, it can be used to set performance goals and initiate the improvement process. To realize this, a strategic framework or model is needed to be able to extract indicators related to the efficiency of the supply chain and design the appropriate model. .

Abstract: This book offers a thorough introduction to the basics and scientific and technological innovations involved in the modern study of reinforcement-learning-based feedback control. The authors address a wide variety of systems including work on nonlinear, networked, multi-agent and multi-player systems. A concise description of classical reinforcement learning (RL), the basics of optimal control with dynamic programming and network control architectures, and a brief introduction to typical algorithms build the foundation for the remainder of the book. Extensive research on data-driven robust control for nonlinear systems with unknown dynamics and multi-player systems follows. Data-driven optimal control of networked single- and multi-player systems leads readers into the development of novel RL algorithms with increased learning efficiency. The book concludes with a treatment of how these RL algorithms can achieve optimal synchronization policies for multi-agent systems with unknown model parameters and how game RL can solve problems of optimal operation in various process industries. Illustrative numerical examples and complex process control applications emphasize the realistic usefulness of the algorithms discussed. The combination of practical algorithms, theoretical analysis and comprehensive examples presented in Reinforcement Learning will interest researchers and practitioners studying or using optimal and adaptive control, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and operations research, whether advancing the theory or applying it in mineral-process, chemical-process, power-supply or other industries.

Abstract: Introduction -- Bayesian Single Target Tracking -- Bayesian Particle Filtering -- Simple Multiple Target Tracking -- Intensity Filters.
Abstract: This book provides a quick but insightful introduction to Bayesian tracking and particle filtering for a person who has some background in probability and statistics and wishes to learn the basics of single-target tracking. It also introduces the reader to multiple target tracking by presenting useful approximate methods that are easy to implement compared to full-blown multiple target trackers. The book presents the basic concepts of Bayesian inference and demonstrates the power of the Bayesian method through numerous applications of particle filters to tracking and smoothing problems. It emphasizes target motion models that incorporate knowledge about the target’s behavior in a natural fashion rather than assumptions made for mathematical convenience. The background provided by this book allows a person to quickly become a productive member of a project team using Bayesian filtering and to develop new methods and techniques for problems the team may face.

Abstract: Nowadays, data analysis is becoming an appealing topic due to the emergence of new data types, dimensions, and sources. This motivates the development of probabilistic/statistical approaches and tools to cope with these data. Different communities of experts, namely statisticians, mathematicians, computer scientists, engineers, econometricians, and psychologists are more and more interested in facing this challenge. As a consequence, there is a clear need to build bridges between all these communities for Data Science. This book contains more than fifty selected recent contributions aiming to establish the above referred bridges. These contributions address very different and relevant aspects such as imprecise probabilities, information theory, random sets and random fuzzy sets, belief functions, possibility theory, dependence modelling and copulas, clustering, depth concepts, dimensionality reduction of complex data and robustness.

Abstract: Living beyond data with Feature Concepts -- Innovation for the Real-World through Knowing Why -- Why Abductive Cognition Goes Beyond Just Learning from Data. .
Abstract: This book states that data users often suffer from the difficulty of acquiring knowledge for decision-making, and others are unsure how existing data are useful. The reader will be released from these dilemmas and enabled to act beyond patterns in past events by creating a process to interact with the data market and the dynamic real-world rich in new events. We present new approaches from the aspects of computation, communication, and their integration, to readers including analysts in sciences and businesses, systems managers, and learners desiring to design knowledge to learn. We show clues to explaining causalities in the target world of a black-box AI of which users may seek a predictive performance. For obtaining interpretable knowledge, we show the integration of model- and data-driven approaches, the analysis and perception of signals from data acquired in the cyber or the real word, and creative communication which connects demands to data by visualizing the data market as a place for innovations.

Abstract: This handbook brings together expertise from a range of disciplinary perspectives and geographical contexts to address a key question facing prison policymakers, architects and designers – what kind of carceral environments foster wellbeing, i.e. deliver a rehabilitative, therapeutic environment, or other ‘positive’ outcomes? The Palgrave Handbook of Prison Design offers insights into the construction of custodial facilities, alongside consideration of the critical questions any policymaker should ask in commissioning the building of a site for human containment. Chapters present experience from Australia, Chile, Estonia, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States – jurisdictions which vary widely in terms of the history and development of their prison systems, their punitive philosophies, and the nature of their public discourse about the role and purpose of imprisonment, to offer readers theories, frameworks, historical accounts, design approaches, methodological strategies, empirical research, and practical approaches. Dominique Moran is Professor of Carceral Geography in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham, UK. Yvonne Jewkes is Professor of Criminology at the University of Bath and Honorary Visiting Professor of Criminology at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Kwan-Lamar Blount-Hill is Assistant Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Arizona State University, USA. Victor St. John is Assistant Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Saint Louis University, USA.

Risk management by necessity must lie at the heart of governing our ever more complex digital societies. New phenomena and activities necessitate a new look at how individuals, firms, and states manage the uncertainty they must operate in. Initial chapters provide an introduction to traditional methods and show how they can be built upon to better understand the workings of the modern economy. Later chapters review digital activities and assets like cryptocurrencies showing how such emergent risks can be conceptualized better. Network theory figures prominently and the book demonstrates how it can be used to gauge the risk in the digital sectors of the economy. Predicting the unpredictable black swan events is also discussed in view of a wider adoption of economic simulations. The journey concludes by looking at how individuals perceive risk and make decisions as they operate in a virtual social network. This book interests the academic audience, but it also features insights and novel research results that are relevant for practitioners and policymakers. .

Abstract: This book is about methodological aspects of uncertainty propagation in data processing. Uncertainty propagation is an important problem: while computer algorithms efficiently process data related to many aspects of their lives, most of these algorithms implicitly assume that the numbers they process are exact. In reality, these numbers come from measurements, and measurements are never 100% exact. Because of this, it makes no sense to translate 61 kg into pounds and get the result—as computers do—with 13 digit accuracy. In many cases—e.g., in celestial mechanics—the state of a system can be described by a few numbers: the values of the corresponding physical quantities. In such cases, for each of these quantities, we know (at least) the upper bound on the measurement error. This bound is either provided by the manufacturer of the measuring instrument—or is estimated by the user who calibrates this instrument. However, in many other cases, the description of the system is more complex than a few numbers: we need a function to describe a physical field (e.g., electromagnetic field); we need a vector in Hilbert space to describe a quantum state; we need a pseudo-Riemannian space to describe the physical space-time, etc. To describe and process uncertainty in all such cases, this book proposes a general methodology—a methodology that includes intervals as a particular case. The book is recommended to students and researchers interested in challenging aspects of uncertainty analysis and to practitioners who need to handle uncertainty in such unusual situations.

Abstract: Why Explainable AI? Why Fuzzy Explainable AI? What Is Fuzzy? -- Defuzzification -- Which Fuzzy Techniques? -- So How Can We Design Explainable Fuzzy AI: Ideas -- How to Make Machine Learning Itself More Explainable -- Final Self-Test.
Abstract: Modern AI techniques –- especially deep learning –- provide, in many cases, very good recommendations: where a self-driving car should go, whether to give a company a loan, etc. The problem is that not all these recommendations are good -- and since deep learning provides no explanations, we cannot tell which recommendations are good. It is therefore desirable to provide natural-language explanation of the numerical AI recommendations. The need to connect natural language rules and numerical decisions is known since 1960s, when the need emerged to incorporate expert knowledge -- described by imprecise words like "small" -- into control and decision making. For this incorporation, a special "fuzzy" technique was invented, that led to many successful applications. This book described how this technique can help to make AI more explainable. The book can be recommended for students, researchers, and practitioners interested in explainable AI.

Abstract: The book presents studies related to artificial intelligence (AI) and its applications to process and analyze data and big data to create machines or software that can better understand business behavior, industry activities, and human health. The studies were presented at “The 2021 International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Big Data in Digital Era” (ICABDE 2021), which was held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, during December 18-19, 2021. The studies are pointing toward the famous slogan in technology “Make everything smarter,” i.e., creating machines that can understand and can communicate with humans, and they must act like humans in different aspects such as vision, communication, thinking, feeling, and acting. “A computer would deserve to be called intelligent if it could deceive a human into believing that it was human” —Alan Turing.
