    Abstract: Männer stellen Rindenbaststoff für die Initiationsfeier der Mädchen her: Sie fällen einen Baum, schaben die äußere Borkenschicht ab, klopfen und lösen die darunterliegende Rindenbastschicht, waschen und dehnen sie. Sie bereiten rote und grüne Farbe aus Urucú und jungen Palmblättern und bemalen damit den fertigen Rindenbaststoff mit verschiedenen Tiermustern.
    Abstract: The Tucuna Indians produce a piece of bark bast and paint it for the initiation celebration of the girls. A tree is felled. After the outer bark has been carefully removed, the inner bast layer is loosened from the trunk by knocking. It is carefully removed, washed, dried and stretched. Red and green dye are prepared. Several Tucunas decorate the bast of the bark with coloured animal drawings.

    Abstract: Ein Mann und drei Frauen holen aus der Savanne junge Buriti-Palmblätter (Mauritia flexuosa Mart.). Aus den fächerförmigen Blättern wird kreuzweise je eine Korbhälfte geflochten. Die Hälften werden zusammengeknotet und verflochten. Die aus dem Rand herausragenden Blattspitzen des bootförmigen Korbes werden abgeschnitten.

Dann streicht er den Krankheitsstoff an eine Stelle des Brustkorbs, saugt ihn mit dem Mund heraus und speit ihn aus.

Er kerbt Pfeilrohrenden, spitzt die Pfeilspitzen und erprobt den fertigen Pfeil.
    Abstract: A member of the Kraho fashions an arrow from reeds. He straightens any crooked reeds over an open fire. The arrow shaft is then shortened; feathers are tied to an end and the binding is sealed with resin. The other end of the shaft is sharpened, and the finished product is tested.

Abschließend findet ein Männerrennen mit einem besonders schweren Klotz statt, das mit einem Zeremonialtanz und Gebet endet.
    Abstract: The film demonstrates the art of relay running with logs between two Kraho men, and then between two groups of women. The last relay is a male race with especially heavy logs. The event culminates in a ceremonial dance and prayer.

Die Schnittstelle am Präputium wird mit einem Wundbelag umwickelt, das Glied mit einem Stoffwulst hochgebunden.
    Abstract: In a banana grove near Ifakara (Ulanga district) a licensed circumciser circumcises a 20-years-old Muslim who is held by an assistant. After the operation a magical wooden chain is wound around his left wrist; licking off a tonic. The prepuce's incision is wrapped in a wound plaster, the penis is tied up with a cloth bead.

    Abstract: Excerpts from the maids' initiation ceremonies in the Ulanga district: 1. Celebration of the kinship in Amris: two girls veiled in blankets are squatting in their father's grange encirled by their dancing and singing female relatives.     Abstract: Pilger verdienen sich auf einer Wallfahrt zu einem lamaistischen Kloster durch Gesang- und Tanzvorführungen ihre Wegzehrung: 1. Ein Mann mit einer Maske, begleitet vom Gesang einer Frau, führt einen Tanz auf. Anschließend singt die Frau mit Trommelbegleitung des Mannes. 2. Auf einem Dorfplatz führen fünf Pilger Tänze auf, die von Musik und religiösen Liedern begleitet werden.
    Abstract: Two pilgrim, a man and woman, in a pilgrimage to a lamaist monastery earn food for their journey by chanting and dancing. The man is wearing a mask of textile material and yak hair. He accompanies his wife's singing with drum rhythms. In a later phase the woman reads chanting texts; the husband accompanies her on the big drum. In the second part of the film a group of five pilgrims perform a dance.

    Abstract: Ausschnitte aus der Aufführung des kultischen Maskentanzes durch die Mitglieder des Klosters Gangtok für die im Klosterhof versammelten Gläubigen: Aufmarschieren der Tempelwache und des Tempelorchesters, Skelettänze, Kriegstänze, Schwarzhutmagier, Tiermasken.
    Abstract: The film shows parts of a performance of Tscham dances in the monastery at Gangtok. First of all the temple guards march from the temple to restrain the audience witnessing the performance; thereafter the lamaist temple orchestra appears. One after another appear skeleton dancers, who are Lamas and are considered to be envoys of the underworld, then the sword and shield carrying warriors who are members of the Tibetan nobility, afterwards the so-called blackhat magicians and finally the most important Gods protecting Tibet portrayed by dancers in animal masks.

Auswaiden und Zerlegen der Beute. Frauen bereiten und verteilen Fleisch. Alle brechen mit Gerät und Beute auf. Klotzrennen der männlichen Jugend.

The hunt begins after the morning meal; the kill is prepared by the women and is divided among all of the hunters. Near the end of the expedition, the male youths begin a log relay race.

Beim Baden wäscht ein älterer Mann Lippenscheibe und Lippenstrang und setzt die Scheibe wieder ein.
    Abstract: A Suya prepares, polishes, and decorates a wooden lip disc and inserts it in place of the old one. An older Suya is seen removing his lip disc and cleaning it with water while bathing.

    Abstract: On the way to a fishing expedition, Caraja men first stop by a sandbank to dig up some tasty tortoise eggs (Podocnemis). Then a large net is anchored across the lake. Men drive the bonytongue fish (Arapaima gigas) into the net by beating the water with long poles. Once a fish is caught in the net, a diver retrieves it and brings it to the surface, where it is killed by another fisherman with an axe.

Die Maskentänzer, die die Seelen verstorbener Verwandter verkörpern, sind immer Männer und werden von Frauen nur begleitet. Gezeigt werden der Bakurétanz (Flagelliertanz des Waldhundes), der Hatóri-Großmaskentanz und der Arischinótanz.
    Abstract: Extracts of last death cult dances performed by still free-living survivors of the Umutima people. Mask dancers, embodying souls of deceased relatives, are always male. They are accompanied by women. "Bakure" dance (flagellating dance of "forest dog"), "Hatori" dance of great masks and "Arischino" dance are shown.

Das Maniokmehl breiten sie auf einem Bananenblatt aus, verteilen darüber Fleischstücke, schnüren alles zu einem großen Paket, das auf heiße Steine gelegt und mit Blättern und Erde abgedeckt wird. Der fertige Kuchen wird anderentags ausgepackt und verteilt.
    Abstract: Kraho women harvesting and preparing manioc. The manioc meal is mixed with pieces of meat, spread onto a large banana leaf, and is covered with leaves. This bundle is tied together, laid on hot stones, and is covered with leaves and earth. The finished cakes are uncovered the next morning and are cut into two large pieces. The villagers are divided into two groups; each cake is cut into smaller pieces and distributed to the people.

Modernization of soil management has prepared the way for use of diesel engine pumps in many areas, and these old methods will soon disappear entirely.

    Abstract: A woman is collecting sponges (Chauchi) in the river, then she digs clay and pounds it, tempers the clay with the ground ash from the sponge and wedges the mixture. First she forms a dish with a low rim from a ball of clay, smoothens the rim and bends it outward. Then she coils a higher cooking pot, smoothens it with a spoon and pitfires the pot.

    Abstract: Exzisionsfeiern. Eine Gruppe junger Mädchen wird im Rahmen eines Initiationsvorganges von einem Mann beschnitten. Nach der Operation legen Frauen den Mädchen Blätterröcke um, in denen sie mit den anderen Dorfbewohnern an einem Tanzfest teilnehmen, bevor sie sich für einen Monat vom Dorf zurückziehen. Nach einem Monat findet ein weiteres Fest statt, bei dem die reichgeschmückten Mädchen in der Frauenkleidung tanzen.
    Abstract: Girls who are ready for the excision ceremony appear with their female relatives before the specialist who will perform the operation. Once the excisions are over, the girls don dresses made of leaf material and take part in the singing and dancing which lasts the entire day. After a month of solitude another festival takes place and the excised girls now wear the dresses of women.

    Abstract: Eine Frau sammelt gifthaltige Bákablätter, die ein Mann im Mörser zerstampft und in Körbe füllt. Männer, Frauen und Kinder ziehen flußaufwärts, wo sie Fische schießen und die Körbe im Wasser ausschwenken. Flußabwärts werden die toten und gelähmten Fische eingesammelt. Ein Mann quirlt Feuer zum Räuchern der Fische. Im Dorf schmücken sich Männer und Frauen zum Fest. Die Männer tanzen in langer Reihe durch die Häuser und auf dem Dorfplatz.
    Abstract: In preparation of a common catch of fish, the poisonous leaves of cultivated báka bushes are picked in the vicinity of a Kaschinaua village and, later on, the leaves are pulverized in mortars in the village. Following this, men, women and children walk upstream for three days until they reach a spot on the river which is particularly abundant with fish. Here the baskets containing the pulverized báka leaves are immersed and emptied into the water. The "fish poison" dissolves in the river water. Further downstream the Kaschinaua wait for the poisoned fish. The men kill the stunned fish by means of bow and arrow; women and children collect the dead fish. After this, one man kindles a flame by the drilling method to light a fire and then the caught fishes are gradually smoked on a grate which is positioned above the fire. After having returned to the village, both men and women dress up to hold a feast. The men dance in a long row through the houses and on the village square.

Gesamtpfeillänge ca. 2 m.

Aus dem Barren zieht er Draht (Durchmesser etwa 0,35 mm), zwirnt diesen und formt daraus Ringe und Rosetten. Diese lötet er auf eine Platte, die er aus Silberblech ausgeschnitten hat.
    Abstract: A rural silversmith from Stesdal making a traditional filigree brooch. He melts rubbish from silver wire and silver sheet in a melting pot. He pulls wire (0,35 mm diameter), twins it and forms rings and rosettes. These are soldered on a silver plate.

    Abstract: Eine mit Hausrat und Waffen bepackte Gruppe bricht für einen mehrtägigen Fischzug zu einem Savannenfluß auf: Aufbau eines Lagers, Vergiften des Flußwassers durch Zerfasern von giftigen Lianen, Erlegen der betäubten Fische mit Pfeil und Bogen, Backen der Fische mit Stangenrosten.
    Abstract: Equipped with weapons and the necessary utensils, a group of Kraho Indians travels to a river and sets up camp. The men gather liana plants, break them up, and place them into the water to stun the fish. The fish are killed with bow and arrow and are taken to the camp where the women bake the fish over an open fire.

    Abstract: Auf einen einfachen Webrahmen wird die rundlaufende Baumwollkette aufgewickelt. Bei der Fachbildung werden mehrere hölzerne Stäbchen durch die Kette geschoben. Der Schußfaden wird mit der Hand durch das Fach gesteckt, angeschlagen und zum Schluß mit einer Eisennadel durch die Kette gefädelt. Im fertigen Traggurt trägt die Weberin ihr Kleinkind.

    Abstract: Am Anfang der Trockenzeit tanzen zwischen den Hütten und dem Maskenhaus des Sommerdorfes Jatobá zwei Maskenpaare: Im Maskenhaus legen die Burschen die dreiteilige Maskenkleidung an, tanzen wiederholt singend und Rasseln schlagend paarweise auf das Dorf zu und kehren zurück. Frauen tanzen den Masken entgegen. Anschließend bereiten sie Essen für die Burschen im Maskenhaus. Vor dem Beginn der Feldarbeiten sammeln mehrere Männer Honig. Dann erfolgen die Abschlußtänze.
    Abstract: Spaced from each other the summer huts and the mask-house of the Javahé-village Jatobá are standing on a sandbank in a small river on the Bananal Island. Inside the mask-house several young men put on mask-dresses. They come out. Singing and shaking a rattle the masks are dancing in pairs towards the village and then return to the mask-house. This action is repeated. Out of the huts, the women approach the masks, dance with them seperated by a few steps, facing each other, and then return to their places, followed by the masks. For the men, living in the mask-house, food is prepared and then brought to them. Towards the end of the dry season the men move to the plains, to collect honey. After this, the mask dances are continued once again for a few days.

    Abstract: Eine Frau häkelt ein Paar baumwollene Beinbinden um die Wade eines Mannes. Sie bestehen aus je zwei dickeren, gehäkelten Randbändern, die in Fransenquasten enden, und einem gehäkelten Mittelstück. Sie färbt die fertigen Beinbinden und Fransen mit in Öl aufgelöster Urucú (Bixa orellana) rot.
    Abstract: A woman crochets a pair of cotton leggings for a man. Each legging is made of a thick band of material with fringe hanging from it. These ornaments are worn just below the knee.
