Abstract:
Eine Frau sammelt gifthaltige Bákablätter, die ein Mann im Mörser zerstampft und in Körbe füllt. Männer, Frauen und Kinder ziehen flußaufwärts, wo sie Fische schießen und die Körbe im Wasser ausschwenken. Flußabwärts werden die toten und gelähmten Fische eingesammelt. Ein Mann quirlt Feuer zum Räuchern der Fische. Im Dorf schmücken sich Männer und Frauen zum Fest. Die Männer tanzen in langer Reihe durch die Häuser und auf dem Dorfplatz.
Abstract:
In preparation of a common catch of fish, the poisonous leaves of cultivated báka bushes are picked in the vicinity of a Kaschinaua village and, later on, the leaves are pulverized in mortars in the village. Following this, men, women and children walk upstream for three days until they reach a spot on the river which is particularly abundant with fish. Here the baskets containing the pulverized báka leaves are immersed and emptied into the water. The "fish poison" dissolves in the river water. Further downstream the Kaschinaua wait for the poisoned fish. The men kill the stunned fish by means of bow and arrow; women and children collect the dead fish. After this, one man kindles a flame by the drilling method to light a fire and then the caught fishes are gradually smoked on a grate which is positioned above the fire. After having returned to the village, both men and women dress up to hold a feast. The men dance in a long row through the houses and on the village square.
