    Abstract: Mit einem Knochenpfriem werden die Maiskolben aufgeschlitzt. Die Hüllblätter werden mit der Hand entfernt und die Kolben mit dem Entkörner entkörnt. Anschließend wird der Mais mit einer Handmühle gemahlen. Die Arbeiten werden von einem Ehepaar aus Huye Luang ausgeführt.

    Abstract: Im Dorf Ban Ayo bauen Männer für ein jungvermähltes Paar in Nachbarschaftshilfe ein Giebeldachhaus. Beim Einsetzen des ersten Hauspfostens wird ein Hundeopfer für den Hausgeist dargebracht.
    Abstract: On placing the first wooden pillars for a house a sacrifice is made to the house-spirit. When all supporting pillars are erected, the bamboo beams and joists are attached. A bamboo framework is then made for the sleeping-place. Subsequently the two ridge pillars are erected and the ridge pole laid across. The rafters and the purlins are fixed on to the rood framework which is then covered with grass mats. The ridge consists of two beams between which sharpened bamboo stakes are pierced in order to fix the grass mats on to the ridge. The ridge is adorned with turrets fixed on top of the smoke-openings. The door is set in after the walls, made of plaited bamboos, are set in.

Dann stellt er eine Peitsche her, deren Schnur er um den Kreisel wickelt. Dieser wird durch Wegwerfen und Ziehen an der Peitsche in Drehung versetzt.
    Abstract: A wooden block of about 15 cm length and about 8 cm in diameter is, with a chopping knife, worked up into a conic whipping top. For strengthening a nail of hard wood is put into its peak. Then a whip is made out of wooden stick and a twisted cord of fibre. With this whip, the whipping top is set rotating.

Sie werfen damit nach bereits "stehenden" Kreiseln, um diese zu Fall zu bringen oder fortzuschleudern.

The thickened milky juice which while thickening changed its colour to blackish-brown is collected with a scraper from the heads which were cut the day before. It is then wrapped up in a flower petal.

Der Tanz wird abwechselnd von einem Mundorgel- oder einem Lautenspieler angeführt.

In rows of two, three, four or five, the girls form an inner circle whilst the men form a chain as the outer circle. The dance, in anti-clockwise direction, is led alternatively by a mouth-organ or lute player.

    Abstract: Ein Mann aus Huye Luang stellt aus zwei Bambusröhren mit Hilfe eines Haumessers eine etwa 57 cm hohe Wasserpfeife her. Die Fugen dichtet er mit Rindertalg ab. In das dickere Saugrohr füllt er Wasser; er stopft Tabak in den Pfeifenkopf und raucht die Pfeife.
    Abstract: The upper joint of a bamboo cane of about 60 cm, with two joints, is pierced with a rod of wood. In the lower third of the cane a hole is incised with a bush knife into which hole a thin bamboo rod is diagonally introduced. The joint is sealed with tallow. The thin bamboo rod was cut off immediately to one side of a joint, thus producing a funnel-shaped form like the bowl of a pipe. Water is now poured into the thicker cane, tobacco is filled into the bowl, and the pipe is smoked.

    Abstract: Festlich gekleidete Mädchen und Jungen in Huye Luang führen anläßlich der Neujahrsfeierlichkeiten verschiedene zeremonielle Spiele auf. Während der Spiele kündigt ein Mann das Neujahr durch einen Schuß aus einer Steinschloßflinte an.
    Abstract: During the new year festivities the ceremonial ball game of the young men and the maidens is played in the village square. The partners form two lines facing each other, throw rag-balls from one line to the other, and accompany the game with recitations and songs. Nearby, the younger boys play the badmintom game, in the course of which feathered missiles of bamboo are batted to and fro with wooden raquets. In a different part of the village several boys are playing the "top-spinning game". During these games, the new year is heralded by a man shooting a flint-look musket.

    Abstract: Aus einem Bambusstäbchen wird mit dem Haumesser ein etwa 10 cm langer Wurfkörper geschnitzt, in dessen oberes Ende drei gekürzte Hühnerfedern als Fiederung eingesetzt werden. Spiel zweier Knaben in Huye Luang, die mit Holzschlägern den Federball einander zuschlagen, wobei er direkt aus der Luft zurückgeschlagen werden soll.
    Abstract: With a cutting knife, an approximately 10 cm long missile is cut from a bamboo stick, and three docked hens-feathers as flight-feathers are fixed in the top. The game between two Miao youths then begins; they bat the "shuttle-cock" to each other with wooden racquets, the object being to keep it in mid-air.

    Abstract: Salanang Sen Tao, ein Schamane aus Huye Luang, bringt am Neujahrstag als Oberhaupt seiner Familie ein Bittopfer an die Ahnengeister dar.
    Abstract: This sacrifice addresses the ancestor spirits. In front of the entrance of the shaman's house the ritual objects are assembled on a small altar table: incense sticks, alcholic liquid in bowls, rice, and spirit paper. The shaman standing in front of the altar invokes the spirits. He throws the oracle rods to inquire whether the sacrifice has been accepted and gives the fowl to two women who slaughter it in the manner required by ritual. Blood is sprinkled on the altar, on the rice and on the spirit paper. After the fowl is boiled it is brought back to the altar table. A pair of cymbals, a burning oil lamp, and smoking incense sticks are placed next to it. The shaman comes back to the altar table and continues its invocations. He throws again the oracle rods. Finally he burns the spirit paper, picks up the oracle rods and returns into his house. Members of the family remove the altar table and carry the ritual objects to the ancestor shrine inside the house.

    Abstract: Drei etwa 5jährige Knaben aus Huye Luang stellen auf einem sandigen Platz 5 bzw. 6 Fruchtkerne (Entada scandens) in einer Reihe auf. Aus einiger Entfernung werfen sie mit ebensolchen Fruchtkernen gegen die aufgestellte Reihe. Sieger ist, wer die meisten Kerne umwirft.
    Abstract: Five or six stones of the saba fruit are placed in a line on the ground. Three boys throw stones of the same type at them. The object of the game is for each player to knock down as many of the stones as he can. If all the players on one side have thrown, and if any of the stones are still standing, throwing is done from the other side. This goes on until all the stones have been knocked down. The player who has knocked down the largest number of stones is the winner.

    Abstract: Festlich gekleidete Mädchen und Männer aus Mae Tho tanzen um einen in die Erde gesteckten grünen Baum - die Mädchen in Zweierreihen in einem inneren Kreis, die Männer in einer Kette außen. Ein Mundorgel- und ein Lautenspieler führen abwechselnd den Tanz an.
    Abstract: The dance is performed around a green tree stuck in the ground. The girls dance in a double-row in an inner circle, whilst the men form a chain as the outer circle. A reed organ player and a lute player take turns in leading the dance. The dance starts in a clockwise direction, changes then, and continues in an anti-clockwise direction up to the end.

    Abstract: Am Tage vor dem Neujahrsfest führt Kee Seng Tao, ein Schamane aus Huye Luang, eine rituelle Schlachtung für seine eigene Familie als Bittopfer an die Ahnengeister durch.
    Abstract: A sacrifice to the ancestor spirits. The ritual objects are arranged on an altar table in front of the house. The shaman invokes the spirits. His body is moved convulsively indicating that he gets possessed by the spirits. After having cpmpleted the invocation he throws oracle rods to inquire whether the sacrifice has been accepted. An animal sacrifice is then performed consisting in the slaughtering of a hog, the blood of which is finally sprinkled over the altar. The hog is then scalded, its bristles removed, it is washed in the river and cut up. Its head is placed on the altar, in front of which the shaman renews his invocations and throws the oracle rods once more. Finally, members of the family remove the altar.
