    Abstract: Während einer Initiation trägt ein Mann aus Japanaut Modelliermasse auf einen Schädel auf. Von einem Baum im Wald holt er Baumsaft. Die Modelliermasse mischt er aus Erde, Baumsaft und gebranntem Kalk. Dann befestigt er am Schädel Kauri-Schneckengehäuse, Conus-Schneckenböden und Menschenhaare. Anschließend wird der Schädel mit schwarzer, gelber und roter Farbe bemalt.
    Abstract: During an initiation ceremony a man modells on a skull a mixture of clay. He taps a tree for some tree-sap. The mixture on the skull consists of earth, tree-sap, and burned chalk. Different shells like cowrie shells and conus shells and human hair fixed on the skull. Finally he paints the overmodelled skull with black, yellow and red.

    Abstract: Zwei große, neugebaute Kanus sollen in einem Singfest geweiht werden. Tags zuvor werden die Memorierstäbe für die Liederreihen vorbereitet: aufgesteckte Figuren werden fertiggeschnitzt und bemalt. Die geschmückten Kanus werden auf das Ufer und zum Männerhaus gezogen. Bei dem Fest wechseln auf einer Schlitztrommel geschlagene kultische Rhythmen mit Gesängen. Am Memorierstab wird der Fortgang der Liederreihe deutlich. Wegen eines Großfeuers, bei dem mehrere Wohnhäuser abbrennen, wird das Fest vorzeitig abgebrochen.
    Abstract: The day before the feast sticks for memorizing the name songs are prepared. The decorated canoes are pulled to the shore and up into the men's house. At the feast name songs are presented which relate to the respective clan mythology. A big fire of several houses puts an end to the feast.

Er stimmt das Instrument und spielt zwei Musikstücke darauf, wobei Kopf- und Mundhöhle für das an die Zähne gelehnte Instrument als Resonanzkörper dienen.
    Abstract: Araminsa, a middle aged man of the village Palimbei, makes a chordophone from the stem of a sago frond. He tunes the instrument and plays two pieces. He holds the instrument to his open mouth. The mouth cavity allows amplification of the tone.

    Abstract: Ein Mann und zwei Frauen in Palimbei sitzen des Abends im Haus zusammen. Eine der Frauen spielt auf der Maultrommel, der Mann schnitzt an einer menschlichen Figur. Die andere Frau versorgt das Feuer in der Feuerschale, über dem Fische geräuchert werden, dreht sich eine Zigarette und raucht. Dann spielen beide Frauen auf der Maultrommel oder unterhalten sich mit dem Mann. Schließlich kriechen sie in einen altertümlichen, geflochtenen Mattenschlafsack, während der Mann weiterschnitzt.
    Abstract: A man and two women sit together in a dwelling house during the evening. One of the women plays the jew's harp while the man works on the carving of a human figure. The other woman smokes fish over the fire. Finally both women play the jew's harp.

Es wird auf die für diese Kultur charakteristische Zusammenarbeit von Männern und Frauen bei der Gewinnung von Nahrungsmitteln sowie von Männern in losen Gruppen eingegangen, ebenso auf die religiösen Verknüpfungen.

    Abstract: How closely linked the various domains of a planting culture are in daily life is demonstrated by means of examples from the activities of a leading Kwoma, Yessomari, who comes from the village of Meno-Saserman in the Washkuk Hills (Ambunti District, East Sepik Province). The film largely follows the planting cycle, from clearing the land (work done co-opertively by the planter, other men from his close cricle of friends and relations, and women) and burning the stubble through the digging of planting holes (done co-operatively by a large group of men), planting the yams, tying up and tending the creepers (the planter's three specific activities) to harvesting the crop. In between, glimpses are given of other sectors of male responsibility, like carving a decorated beam for a men's house, preparing a pandanus soup, extracting sago starch, making and decorating a piece of ceremonial pottery and painting a chip-carved shield. The film closes with a look at a harvest festival, which women with shields made of decorated net bags also take part in, dancing in front of the men's house.

    Abstract: Zur festlichen Einweihung eines neuerbauten Gemeinschaftswohnhauses (Maloka) am Rio Pirá-Paraná schmücken sich seine Bewohner zusammen mit den Gästen besonders durch Körperbemalung und Anlegen von Federschmuck. Das Fest wird mit Tänzen, Gesängen, Musik und Rezitation der Schöpfungsmythen begangen, bei Einnahme halluzinogener Drogen. Eine Rassellanze dient zur Anrufung hilfreicher Geister.
    Abstract: For the indians of Vaupés the Maloka is not only a house but a symbol of the cosmos. For this reason the inauguration of a Maloka is celebrated by a great festival, at which the participants wear precious feather ornaments. The film shows men and women decorating themselves for the dance festival. Different dances are performed inside the Maloka and in the open air. Under the influence of hallucinogene drugs the men recite the old myths of creation. A shaman appears upon the scene with a rattle lance. The festival is accompanied by the music of the syrinx and by the ritual chants.

    Abstract: Dieses javano-balinesische höfische Tanzdrama, geht auf das 15. Jahrhundert zurück. Als Stoff werden Ausschnitte aus dem Panji-Roman benutzt. Die Akteure sind Herolde, 1 Minister, Ritter, 2 Fürsten und ihre Narren. Das Orchester weist eine für einen Gamelan ungewöhnliche Instrumentation auf: 4 Flöten und 1 Spießgeige als Melodieinstrumente, Trommeln zur Rhythmusgestaltung, verschiedene metallene Instrumente zur Klangfärbung und Zeitgliederung.
    Abstract: Among the Javano-Balinese dance dramas of the court, Gambuh is the oldest of the still existing genres. It has its origins in the 15th century and uses for its plot stories from the great epic of Prince Panji. Supporting a good troup of Gambuh players involves considerable financial means and extremely laborious rehearsing. For these reasons and because of the lack of popularity of Gambuh with the great majority, performances have become rare after the decline of the courts. The orchestra is distinctly different from the usual types of gamelan since the metallophones as the leaders of the melody are absent and the sound of flutes and of tinkling and ringing instruments prevails. The list of actors contains kings, clowns, knights, ministers, heralds, a princess, and a governess. A performance normally lasts for 2 to 4 hours today. The film presents a shortened versions of ca. 20 minutes.

    Abstract: Wichtige Abschnitte eines alljährlich im ersten Monat des balinesischen Jahres stattfindenden Ernte- und Fruchtbarkeitsfestes: Verehrungstanz, Palmweinopfer, Schildtanz jeweils der unverheirateten sowie der verheirateten Männer, Opfertanz der Mädchen. Anbieten der Opfer an die Dorfgötter.
    Abstract: The film shows the optical high-lights of a harvest and fertility ritual taking place in the first month of the Balinese calendrical year. These are: 1-3: Dance in honour of the deities, libation of palm wine, and shield dance, all by the unmarried village boys. 4-6: Dance in honour of the deities, libation of palm wine, and shield dance, all by a specific category of married male villagers. 7: Dance of offering to the gods by the unmarried village girls. 8: Offering of gifts to the village deities. These ritual actions all are carried out within the central village temple. Scenes 1, 3, 4, and 6 are accompanied by a sacred orchestra consisting of iron metallophones, scenes 7 and 8 by an orchestra with bronze instruments.

An Musikinstrumenten sind nur diejenigen vertreten, die für die Zwiesprache mit den Tänzerinnen unerläßlich sind: Konustrommeln, Becken, interpungierende Gongs und melodieführendes Metallophon.
    Abstract: Rehearsing the légong dance: Opening dance by the lady-in-waiting condong; then dancing together with the two légong dancers. The dance is accompanied only by the instruments indispensable for the dialogue with the dancers: conical drums, cymbals, punctuating gongs, and the metallophon leading the tune.

    Abstract: Aus dem rituellen Musikrepertoire des sakralen Eisenplatten-Orchesters werden zwei Stücke herausgegriffen, bei denen sowohl in der Stützmelodie als auch in der Figuration heptatonische Passagen auftreten, die von der im allgemeinen pentatonischen Musik abweichen. Zur Erleichterung der Analyse der komplexen Figurationen und der Spielweise wurden einzelne Instrumentalparts auch gesondert gefilmt (vgl. E 2167).
    Abstract: The film shows the sacred iron plate orchestra selonding (see Film E 2167) playing two pieces of ritual music in which the main melody and the figuration contain heptatonic passages deviating from the ordinary pentatonic music.

    Abstract: Überblick über den Aufbau repräsentativer Stücke aus dem rituellen Musikrepertoire des altbalinesischen Dorfes Tenganan. Die auf einfachen Eisentasteninstrumenten gespielte Ritualmusik wird von Musikspezialisten allmonatlich zu festgelegten Kultzeiten aufgeführt. Zur Erleichterung der Analyse der komplexen Figurationen und der Spielweise wurden einzelne Instrumentalparts auch gesondert gefilmt (vgl. E 2237).
    Abstract: The film gives a general view of the structure and manner of playing of representative pieces of ritual music of the old Balinese village of Tenganan Pegeringsingan. The performers are musical specialists (jurugambel), nominated by the village, who play in specific combinations of the sacred iron plate orchestra selonding. In order to facilitate the analysis of the complex figuration and of the manner of playing, different instrumental parts were also filmed separately.

Gegenstand ist hier die mythische Entstehung dieser speziellen dramatischen Gattung selbst.
    Abstract: Complete performance of a wayang lemah, a ritual play with leather puppets, performed unlike the Indonesian shadow-play by a priestly manipulator in broad daylight. Subject of the wayang lemah represented is the mythical creation of this dramatic genre itself.

    Abstract: Die Hofdame Condong tanzt den solistischen Eröffnungstanz. Im gemeinsamen Tanz schmückt sie darauf die beiden Légong mit Blumen. Nach ihrem Abtritt kehren auch die Nymphen in den Himmelspalast zurück.
    Abstract: The lady-in-waiting performs the opening solo dance, then she dances together with the two légong, decorating them with flowers. After her exit the nymphs also return to the palace of heaven (concluded in film E 2236).

Es werden vierzeilige Jodler und Lieder gesungen. Die Begleitmusik besorgt ein Lambacher Spieler auf der diatonischen Ziehharmonika, dem sich drei Spieler aus Wels mit zwei Geigen und einem Kontrabaß hinzugesellt haben.
    Abstract: The film presents an Upper Austrian Landler from Lambach im Traunviertel as it is performed in unbroken tradition this very day (1970) by a group of interested natives, young as well as old ones. According to regional custom the Landler is followed by a Boarischer, that is a Bavarian Polka. The music played in accompaniment is performed by a native musician on the diatonic accordion; he has been joined by three more musicians from the neighbouring Wels, playing two violins and a double bass.
