    Abstract: Mit Hilfe der hinterlassenen Spuren stöbern Männer Landschildkröten in ihrem sommerlichen Versteck auf und bringen sie ins Dorf. Dort wird eine Schildkröte zubereitet. Der Bauchpanzer wird mit der Axt vom Rückenpanzer getrennt und mit dem Messer von Muskeln und Fleisch abgelöst, bevor die Schildkröte ausgenommen und mit Maniok gefüllt wird. Das gare Fleisch wird von einer fünfköpfigen Familie verspeist.
    Abstract: Men and boys rouse several tortoises under a rock in the savanna and carry them to the village. On the village square, where his wife has lit a fire, one of the men prepares a tortoise: He removes the plastron with an axe and a bush knife, takes out the guts and inserts ground manioc for thickening. The tortoise is placed on its back on the blaze and covered by heated stones. Bunches of leaves are placed on the stones, covered by hot ashes and earth (earth oven). - The tortoise, cooked in its carapase, is taken out of the heap of ashes, cleaned roughly and consumed by the family.

    Abstract: Zwei Seher zeichnen Orakeltafeln mit je sechs Feldern in den Sand. Gestreute Erdnußkerne locken über Nacht den Schakal herbei. Aus seinen Spuren und mit Hilfe eines Krummstabes wird die Antwort abgelesen. Die Seher kehren in das Dorf zurück, um den Fragestellern die Antwort des Orakels zu bringen.
    Abstract: Two seers make offerings on the place of the jackal oracle, then mark the oracle charts on the sand with six compartments each, on to which they record the signs corresponding to the question of each person. Groundnut kernels are strewn about to entice the jackal during the night. The answer is "read" from his tracks, and the destroyed and intact signs, by means of a crook. The seers return to the village to impart the oracle's answer to those who had asked the questions.

Thin wooden plugs are inserted into the holes in order to prevent the border of the wounds from coalescing. By degrees the plugs are replaced by thicker ones, aiming at a gradual enlargement of the earlobes. The swollen earlobes are cleaned and cooled with water. An adult inserts ear discs (approx. 8 cm diameter) in his fully widened earlobes.

Neben und halb übereinandergestapelt befestigt er sie mit einem durch das obere Loch geführten Faden an einer als Bogensehne aufgespannten Schnur, dann bindet er die Sehne um die Taille. Dadurch werden die Plättchen fächerartig gespreizt. Er führt einen zweiten Faden durch die freien Löcher und fixiert so die Plättchen.
    Abstract: With a bush knife a Waurá man breaks from large snail-shells small rectangular plates and polishes them on a stone. Using a drill with a point made of a steel needle broken in the middle of the eye, turned by the palms, he makes two holes in each plate, one at the upper end, the other at the lower end. He then attaches the plates, partly covering each other, to a string put on a bow by passing a thread through the upper holes, removes the string from the bow, and puts it round his waist so that the plates are spread out like a fan. He fixes the plates in this position with a thread passed through the lower holes, then he tries the necklace.

The contenders first circle each other with a slouching attitude, then they go down on their knees and holding each other by the right hand each tries to clasp his left hand round his opponent's back and to push him down. The aim of the fight is to throw the opponent on the back to the ground. Only at contests between different tribes however the fights are fought to a finish, practice fights are usually stopped as soon as the superiority of one wrestler is evident.

Nach Absetzen der Stärke wird der blausäurehaltige Saft abgeschöpft, die Stärkeschicht zerkrümelt und getrocknet. Aus feinem Stärkemehl werden Fladen gebacken.

After the starch has percipitated to the bottom of the pot, the liquid, which contains prussic acid, is ladled off; the layer of starch is crumbled and dried in the sun. Cakes (beijú) are baked from the fine starch-flour.

    Abstract: In einem Dorf am Rio Batoví werden die Früchte des Urucú-Strauches (Bixa orellana) geerntet: Ausschaben des Fruchtfleisches; Verrühren mit Wasser und Aussondern der Samen; Eindicken der roten Flüssigkeit auf dem Feuer zu einer öligen Farbpaste.
    Abstract: The fruits of the urucú-bush (Bixa orellana) are gathered and the seeds coated with a red pulp are removed from the green shells. The seeds are mixed with water and all is passed through a round frame sieve and a rectangular plaited strainer to remove the seeds. The red liquid obtained is put on the fire and thickened into a slightly oily paste, which after hardening will be kept in lumps. Red urucú dye is used chiefly for painting the body and the hair, but also for decorating certain utensils and for dyeing cotton threads.

    Abstract: Ein Mann spaltet ein junges Palmblatt mit noch geschlossenen Fiederblättern und flicht die Fiedern von der Mittelrippe aus kreuzweise in 2/2 Köperbindung zu einem länglichen Diagonalgeflecht zusammen, erwärmt es über Feuer, klappt es auf die Hälfte zusammen und versieht den so entstandenen Rückenkorb mit Tragbändern aus zusammengedrehten Lianen.
    Abstract: The pinnules of a palm-leaf are plaited from the inner rib into a longish rectangle by an oblique 2/2 twill technique. The rectangle is folded in half and sewn on both sides. The resulting back-basket is furnished with carrying straps made of twisted lianas.

    Abstract: Während der Trockenzeit werden riesige Mengen von Wasserpflanzen (Eichhornia azurea) im See gesammelt, am Ufer getrocknet und verbrannt. Im Dorf wird die Pflanzenasche mit Wasser ausgelaugt und die Lösung eingedampft. Zurück bleibt ein hellgraues, pottaschehaltiges Salz (überwiegend KCl).
    Abstract: During the dry season quantities of aquatic plants (Eichhornia azurea) are collected in the lake, dried on the bank and burnt to ashes. In the village the ashes are lixiviated and the solution is evaporated. The result is light-grey potassium salt (chiefly KCl).
