    Abstract: Das 20. Jahrhundert als »Zeitalter der Extreme« (Eric Hobsbawm) ist in starkem Maße durch kriegerische und genozidale Auseinandersetzungen geprägt. Bei deren Untersuchung nahm die Geschichtsschreibung jahrzehntelang mehrheitlich eine androzentrische Perspektive ein und ignorierte die in den 1980er-Jahren besonders im angelsächsischen Raum einsetzende Forschung zu Geschlecht, Militär und Krieg. Die internationalen Beiträger*innen des Bandes widmen sich daher aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive der Geschlechterfrage in der Kriegsforschung. Ihre Analysen zu den Weltkriegen, zum Spanischen Bürgerkrieg sowie u.a. zu den Themen Mobilisierung, Wissenschaft und Kultur liefern einen wichtigen Beitrag zur geschlechtergeschichtlichen und -theoretischen Durchdringung der Kriegsgeschichte.

    Abstract: Höhere Lehrerbildung und eine Mathematische Gesellschaft, beide in Dresden institutionalisiert und bewährt, sind ungewöhnlich für eine technische Bildungsstätte in den 1860er/1870er Jahren und zogen hervorragende Mathematiker und Physiker an. In dieser Tradition nahmen die fünf Ordinarien Karl Rohn, Georg Helm, Martin Krause, Walther Ludwig und Gerhard Kowalewski, die später das Rektorat der Technischen Hochschule Dresden innehatten, ihre Arbeit auf. Waltraud Voss zeigt, wie sie den gesellschaftlichen Verhältnissen entsprechend Reformen mitgestalteten, sich für Neues einsetzten und dabei in Lehre und Forschung stets auf das ausgeglichene Zusammenspiel von Theorie und Praxis bedacht und bestrebt waren, die Mathematik breiteren Kreisen der Dresdner Bevölkerung näherzubringen

    Abstract: Unter dem ungewissen Erwartungshorizont spätmoderner Gesellschaften treten verschiedene Vorstellungen kollektiver Identität in Konflikt. Jochen Kibel zeigt: Im Streit um das Neue Museum in Berlin und das Militärhistorische Museum in Dresden artikulierten sich unterschiedliche Kollektivierungsdiskurse, in denen die Vergangenheit nach den Anforderungen der Gegenwart umgeformt wurde. Der retrospektive Blick gewährt damit immer auch die prospektive Hoffnung auf eine bessere Vergangenheit. Die dynamischen Verhältnisse der Gegenwart bringen schließlich eine Form reflexiver Identitätsbildung hervor, in der auch die Fähigkeit anhaltender Selbstkritik in der Vergangenheit 〉wiedergefunden〈 wird. Die Vorstellung einer wandlungsfähigen Identität gewährleistet dann ein Gleichbleiben im Strom der Zeit, durch beständige Kurskorrekturen.
    Abstract: Der Konflikt zwischen verschiedenen Vorstellungen kollektiver Identität wird nicht zuletzt auf dem Feld der Erinnerungspolitik ausgetragen. Jochen Kibel geht den Kollektivierungsdiskursen nach, die sich im Streit um das Neue Museum in Berlin und das Militärhistorische Museum in Dresden artikulierten: Der retrospektive Blick zurück gewährt immer auch die prospektive Hoffnung auf eine bessere Vergangenheit.     Abstract: Das politische Interesse in Deutschland am Islam hat seinen Ursprung im Ersten Weltkrieg, als das Kaiserreich zusammen mit dem Osmanischen Reich die »Revolutionierung« der islamischen Welt gegen die Entente-Mächte anstrebte. Eine zentrale Organisation im Feld der Dschihadisierung und der Kriegspropaganda war dabei die 1914 gegründete »Nachrichtenstelle für den Orient«. Mit der Neukontextualisierung dieser Einrichtung unter Einbeziehung der Vorkriegs- und Kolonialgeschichte sowie der Agency einzelner Akteure gelingt es Samuel Krug, die Geschichte der Nachrichtenstelle für den Orient aus dem bisherigen Narrativ des Scheiterns als Kriegs- und Propagandainstrument zu befreien und eine spannende Geschichte globaler Netzwerke und Diskurse aufzudecken.

    Abstract: In the early years of the Cold War, Western nations increasingly adopted strategies of public diplomacy involving popular music. While the diplomatic use of popular music was initially limited to such genres as jazz, the second half of the 20th century saw a growing presence of various popular genres in diplomatic contexts, including rock, punk, reggae, and hip-hop.This volume illuminates the interrelation of popular music and public diplomacy from a transnational and transdisciplinary angle. The contributions argue that, as popular music has been a crucial factor in international relations, its diplomatic use has substantially impacted the global musical landscape of the 20th and 21st centuries

    Abstract: "Urban Villages and Local Identities examines immigration to the Great Plains by surveying the experiences of three divergent ethnic groups--Volga Germans, Omaha Indians, and Vietnamese--that settled in enclaves in Lincoln, Nebraska, beginning in 1876, 1941, and 1975, respectively. These urban villages served as safe havens that protected new arrivals from a mainstream that often eschewed unfamiliar cultural practices. Lincoln's large Volga German population was last fully discussed in 1918; Omahas are rarely studied as urban people although sixy-five percent of their population lives in cities; and the growing body of work on Vietnamese tends to be conducted by social scientists rather than historians, few of whom contrast Southeast Asian experiences with those of earlier waves of immigration. As a comparative study, Urban Villages and Local Identities is inspired, in part, by Reinventing Free Labor, by Gunther Peck. By focusing on the experiences of three populations over the course of 130 years, Urban Villages connects two distinct eras of international border crossing and broadens the field of immigration to include Native Americans. These events resulted in an untold number of deaths, indictments of over 550 coal miners for insurrection and treason, and four declarations of martial law.     Abstract: "Beset by the forces of European colonialism, US imperialism, and neoliberalism, the people of the Antilles have had good reasons to band together politically and economically, yet not all Dominicans, Haitians, and Puerto Ricans have heeded the calls for collective action. So what has determined whether Antillean solidarity movements fail or succeed? In this comprehensive new study, Alai Reyes-Santos argues that the crucial factor has been the extent to which Dominicans, Haitians, and Puerto Ricans imagine each other as kin. Our Caribbean Kin considers three key moments in the region's history: the nineteenth century, when the Antillanismo movement sought to throw off the yoke of colonial occupation; the 1930s, at the height of the region's struggles with US imperialism; and the past thirty years, as neoliberal economic and social policies have encroached upon the islands. At each moment, the book demonstrates, specific tropes of brotherhood, marriage, and lineage have been mobilized to construct political kinship among Antilleans, while racist and xenophobic discourses have made it difficult for them to imagine themselves as part of one big family. Recognizing the wide array of contexts in which Antilleans learn to affirm or deny kinship, Reyes-Santos draws from a vast archive of media, including everything from canonical novels to political tracts, historical newspapers to online forums, sociological texts to local jokes. Such moves are driven by a very realistic set of calculations: in 2010 the collective revenue of the fifteen highest-grossing teams in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) topped one billion dollars, a hefty figure that does not even take into account the revenue generated by the sales of university-related apparel and athletic gear. Expressions of team allegiance, particularly the display of sports mascots, are a visual expression of this American obsession with collegiate sport. In American Spectacle, historian Jennifer Guiliano investigates the role of sports mascots in the big business of American college football in order to connect mascotry to twentieth-century expressions of community identity, individual belonging, stereotyped imagery, and cultural hegemony. The case studies in Performing Indigeneity underscore the social, historical, and immediate contextual factors at play when indigenous people make decisions about when, how, why, and who can "be" indigenous in public spaces. Performing Indigeneity invites readers to consider how groups and individuals think about performance and display and focuses attention on the ways that public spheres, both indigenous and nonindigenous ones, have received these performances.     Abstract: "Racial Blackness and the Discontinuity of Western Modernity is the unfinished manuscript of Lindon Barrett, who died tragically and unexpectedly in 2008. John Carlos Rowe has assembled the completed chapters, and provides an introduction that offers some background and context for the writings. The project offers a genealogy of how the development of racial blackness within the mercantile capitalist system of Euro-American colonial imperialism was constitutive of Western modernity. Barrett explores the complex transnational systems of economic transactions and political exchanges foundational to the formation of modern subjectivities. In particular, he traces the embodied and significatory violence involved in the development of modern nations, and characterizes that time of nation-building as one which created unprecedented individual and communal detachments, facilitating the exclusion of racialized subjects from modern understandings of what it means to be human, or a subject.     Note: "Speaking Soviet with an Accent presents the first English-language study of Soviet culture clubs in Kyrgyzstan. These clubs profoundly influenced the future of Kyrgyz cultural identity and fostered the work of many artists, such as famed novelist Chingiz Aitmatov. Based on extensive oral history and archival research, Ali Igmen follows the rise of culture clubs beginning in the 1920s, when they were established to inculcate Soviet ideology and create a sedentary lifestyle among the historically nomadic Kyrgyz people. These "Red clubs" are fondly remembered by locals as one of the few places where lively activities and socialization with other members of their ail (village or tribal unit) could be found. Through lectures, readings, books, plays, concerts, operas, visual arts, and cultural Olympiads, locals were exposed to Soviet notions of modernization. But these programs also encouraged the creation of a newfound "Kyrgyzness" that preserved aspects of local traditions and celebrated the achievements of Kyrgyz citizens in the building of a new state. These ideals proved appealing to many Kyrgyz, who, for centuries, had seen riches and power in the hands of a few tribal chieftains and Russian imperialists. This book offers new insights into the formation of modern cultural identity in Central Asia. Here, like their imperial predecessors, the Soviets sought to extend their physical borders and political influence.
