    Abstract: Dieses Buch analysiert Online-Communitys, die der sogenannten "Mannosphäre" angehören, die für ihren Frauenhass und ihre Nähe zur "Alt-Right-Bewegung", der alternativen Rechten in den USA, bekannt ist. Im Fokus stehen Alt-Right-YouTuber, Incels, MGTOWs (Men Going Their Own Way) und NoFap-User sowie die Manifeste der Mörder Anders Behring Breivik und Elliot Rodger. Basierend auf den psychoanalytischen Ansätzen von Klaus Theweleit, Wilhelm Reich und Elisabeth Young-Bruehl untersucht der Autor, welche Fantasien und Bilder von Körperlichkeit, Geschlecht und Sexualität dort konstruiert und ausgetauscht werden. Die Männer offenbaren widersprüchliche Gedanken, Wünsche und Fantasien über Frauen, die frauenfeindlich sind, aber auch darüber hinausgehen. Sie befinden sich in einem Zustand der Hemmung bzw. Enthemmung und sind hin- und hergerissen zwischen (un)bewussten Kräften und Fantasien, die aufbrechen und abgewehrt werden.     Abstract: Warum stehen Menschen den ›Mainstream-Medien‹ kritisch gegenüber? Weshalb entfalten die ›Alternativmedien‹ Wirkung? Wie kann der etablierte Journalismus abgespaltene Teile der Gesellschaft (zurück-)gewinnen? Was ist guter Journalismus – und wozu braucht es ihn in einer polarisierten Gesellschaft? Während Deutschland diese Fragen diskutiert, haben 33 Kritiker der Leitmedien im transdisziplinären Dialog mit Wissenschaft und Praxis nach Lösungen gesucht und ein Bürgerbuch zur Zukunft des Journalismus geschrieben. Biographische Informationen Benjamin Krämer, Dr., Jahrgang 1981, ist akademischer Rat und Privatdozent am Institut für Kommunikationswissenschaft und Medienforschung der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. Er studierte Medienmanagement an der Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover und promovierte 2012 an der LMU mit einer Arbeit zur Mediensozialisation. 2015 bis 2016 vertrat er die Professur für empirische Methoden der Kommunikationswissenschaft an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. 2017 war er Junior Researcher in Residence am Center for Advanced Studies der LMU mit einem Projekt zu Rechtspopulismus und Medien. Seit 2017 leitet er das DFG-Projekt "Medienbiographien der bundesdeutschen Kanzler und der Kanzlerin". 2019 wurde ihm die Lehrbefugnis für das Fach Kommunikationswissenschaft erteilt.     Abstract: 2015 sorgten Hunderttausende geflüchtete Menschen in den deutschen Zeitungen für Schlagzeilen und machten Flucht einmal mehr zum Thema der Kommunikationswissenschaft. Wurde über Geflüchtete zuvor gar nicht oder wenn, dann oft negativ berichtet, stellt sich im Kontext der viel beschworenen „Willkommenskultur“ eine neue Frage an den Journalismus: Gibt es neben der ereigniszentrierten Politikberichterstattung andere, wirtschafts- und kulturjournalistische Perspektiven auf das Thema Flucht und wenn ja, welche? Diese Frage beantwortet das Buch mit einer quantitativen und qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse von rund 300 Zeitungsartikeln im Wirtschafts- und Kulturressort der Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung und der Süddeutschen Zeitung zwischen 2015 und 2016. Grundlage bildet eine umfassende Literatursichtung bisheriger Befunde, die den normativen Ansprüchen des Friedensjournalismus gegenübergestellt werden. Mit einer daraus entwickelten Analyseheuristik werden sowohl defizitäre als auch humanitäre Elemente der Wirtschafts- und Kulturberichterstattung über Flucht identifiziert und systematisiert: Während Geflüchtete im Wirtschaftsressort tendenziell eher als Belastung beschrieben werden und sich die Berichterstattung auf eine deutsche wirtschafts-, sozial- und innenpolitische Krise bezieht, lässt das Kulturressort mehr Raum für eine empathische Berichterstattung, in der die humanitäre Dimension im Vordergrund steht. In beiden Ressorts wird jedoch mehr über als mit Geflüchteten gesprochen, Fluchtursachen werden nur oberflächlich thematisiert und Lösungsansätze selten diskutiert. „Von 'Wirtschaftsflüchtlingen' und 'Willkommenskultur'. Fluchtberichterstattung abseits des Politikressorts“ ist eine Studie über Fluchtberichterstattung abseits des Politikressorts, zwischen journalistischem Anspruch und Realität.

    Abstract: Wir leben in einer Welt, die sich immer schneller verändert; Globalisierung, Individualisierung, Ökonomisierung oder Mediatisierung sind Stichworte, unter denen dies diskutiert wird.     Abstract: Die Arbeit geht in dreierlei Hinsicht neue Wege: Erstens werden die normativen Grundannahmen der bestehenden Ansätze zur journalistischen Qualität herausgearbeitet. Zweitens knüpft die Eigentheorie an den Sozialkonstruktivismus in der Tradition von Peter L. Berger und Thomas Luckmann an, ebenfalls ein Novum in der Erforschung journalistischer Qualität. Und drittens wird die herkömmliche quantitative Methodik zugunsten eines quantitativ-qualitativen Methodenmixes erweitert, wobei die Qualitätsurteile junger Erwachsener zum Journalismus rekonstruktiv im Fokus stehen. Im ersten Oberkapitel werden Theorien und Ansätze zur journalistischen Qualität besprochen, zugrunde liegende normative Vorstellungen freigelegt und Defizite identifiziert. Das zweite Oberkapitel enthält den Theorieentwurf, der neben dem Sozialkonstruktivismus auch verschiedene andere Ansätze integriert, etwa das Konzept der Wissensgesellschaft, die Prototypen-Semantik oder die Theorie subjektiver Qualitätsauswahl. Im dritten Oberkapitel werden die Ergebnisse von acht Gruppendiskussionen mit insgesamt 76 jungen Erwachsenen sowie die Ergebnisse einer Befragung dieser Teilnehmer/innen präsentiert, im Hinblick auf sieben aus dem Theorieentwurf abgeleitete Forschungsfragen. Im Ergebnis zeigte sich eine erstaunliche Konstanz der Qualitätsvorstellungen der jungen Erwachsenen, die allerdings in einer gewissen Spannung zu ihrer eigenen Mediennutzung stand. Anders gesagt: Was junge Erwachsene gut finden und was sie "an sich" für gut halten, klafft auseinander. Instrumentelle und normative Qualitätsvorstellungen weichen demzufolge voneinander ab. Neben dem Alter hatte das Milieu eine moderierende Wirkung, insofern es vor allem prägte, welche Medienangebote überhaupt als positive oder negative Qualitätsprototypen in Diskussionen eingebracht wurden.

    Abstract: Medieninhaltsanalysen stehen in der Kritik, die Rezeptionsweisen des Publikums in ihrer Methodik, Kategoriebildung und Dateninterpretation nicht ausreichend zu beachten. Diese Arbeit prüft anhand des Beispiels TV-Programmanalyse, inwiefern Urteile von Rezipienten und darauf abstellende Bewertungssysteme eine geeignete Alternative zur traditionell inhaltsanalytisch angelegten Medienqualitätsforschung sind. Bezug genommen wird auf neuere Erkenntnisse aus der differenziellen Rezeptionsforschung sowie auf jenen Zweig der Wirkungsforschung, der von Vorstellungen von einem Kognitionszyklus und vom Verstehen als Interaktion ausgeht. Die Analyse belegt, dass Medienangebot und Medienrezeption verbundene Phänomene sind und daher unabhängig voneinander keine Erklärungen liefern. Als Vorschlag lässt sich ableiten, die klassische Inhaltsanalyse gemäß dem Modell von differenzieller Rezeption in Richtung einer rezipiententypenspezifischen Inhaltsanalyse weiterzuentwickeln.     Abstract: Durch das Aufkommen und die zunehmende Nutzung von Smartphones mit eingebauter Kamera erfährt der Amateurfilm einen enormen Bedeutungszuwachs. Ausgehend von diesem Phänomen beschäftigt sich dieser Band mit historischen und gegenwärtigen Amateurfilmpraktiken. Das Spektrum der Beiträge ist breit angelegt und reicht von soziologischen, über filmwissenschaftliche, kulturwissenschaftliche und medienpädagogische bis hin zu archivarischen Fragestellungen. Der Band bietet im Themenfeld der Visuellen Kultur zum ersten Mal einen breiten Überblick zu den verschiedenen Bewegtbildpraktiken unter den Bedingungen einer fortschreitenden Digitalisierung. Neben theoretischen Überlegungen zum Amateurfilm und zum Bewegtbild finden sich Aufsätze zu audiovisuellen Darstellungen, zur Produktion und Distribution wie zur Rezeption von Bewegtbildern. Vorgestellt werden diverse Aufnahmegeräte und damit verbundene Praktiken und Ästhetiken – von Super-8- über Video- bis hin zu GoPro-Kameras und Drohnen. In einzelnen Beiträgen wird diskutiert, inwiefern Bewegtbildpraktiken im Kontext einer allgemeinen Tendenz zur gesellschaftlichen Ästhetisierung verstehbar sind.

In Net Smart, cyberculture expert Howard Rheingold shows us how to use social media intelligently, humanely, and, above all, mindfully.     Abstract: The need to reform water policies is as urgent as ever. Water is essential for economic growth, human health, and the environment. Yet governments around the world face significant challenges in managing their water resources effectively. The problems are multiple and complex: billions of people are still without access to safe water and adequate sanitation; competition for water is increasing among the different uses and users; and major investment is required to maintain and improve water infrastructure in OECD and non-OECD countries. Despite progress on many fronts, governments around the world are still confronted with the need to reform their existing water policies in order to meet current objectives and future challenges. Building on the water challenges identified by the OECD Environment Outlook to 2050, this report examines three fundamental areas that need to be addressed whatever reform agendas are pursued by governments: financing of the water sector; the governance and institutional arrangements that are in place; and coherence between water policies and policies in place in other sectors of the economy. The report provides governments with practical advice and policy tools to pursue urgent reform in their water sectors.

    Abstract: The economics of news production and distribution is in a state of radical change. After very profitable years, newspaper publishers in most OECD countries face declining advertising revenues and significant reductions in titles and circulation. About 20 out of 30 OECD countries face declining newspaper readership, which is now at its lowest among younger people. At the same time, many promising forms of news creation and distribution are being tested. Some of these are empowered by increasing technological sophistication, new information intermediaries and the resulting decentralised forms of content creation. However, despite these new possibilities, no business and/or revenue-sharing models have been found to finance in-depth independent news production. This raises questions about the supply of high-quality journalism in the longer term and roles that government support might take in supporting a diverse and local press without putting its independence at stake. This study provides an in-depth treatment of the global newspaper publishing market and its evolution, with a particular view on the development of online news and related challenges.

    Abstract: Leaders and academics can improve the quality of higher education teaching, and thereby the quality of their graduates, by reflecting on institution-wide practices.     Abstract: Climate change is likely to have significant impacts on the agricultural sector to which farmers will have to adapt. While agriculture is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, it is also a source of carbon storage in soils. This report examines the economic and policy issues related to the impacts of climate change on agriculture and adaptation responses and to the mitigation of greenhouse gases from agriculture. It outlines research undertaken and underway in other national and international research agencies. It also highlights some of the knowledge gaps on the impacts of climate change on food production and the uncertainties of those impacts in a global context that warrant further research efforts. In particular, the report analyses marginal abatement cost curves, which show the relative costs of achieving reductions in greenhouse gas emission through the implementation of different actions in the agricultural sector. The aim of the report is to help guide policy makers in the design of policies to address climate change issues in agriculture.

    Abstract: Car ownership is set to triple by 2050, trucking activity will double and air travel could increase fourfold. This book examines how to enable mobility without accelerating climate change. It finds that if we change the way we travel, adopt technologies to improve vehicle efficiency and shift to low-CO2 fuels, we can move onto a different pathway where transport CO2 emissions by 2050 are far below current levels, at costs that are lower than many assume. The report discusses the prospects for shifting more travel to the most efficient modes and reducing travel growth rates, improving vehicle fuel efficiency by up to 50% using cost-effective, incremental technologies, and moving toward electricity, hydrogen, and advanced biofuels to achieve a more secure and sustainable transport future. If governments implement strong policies to achieve this scenario, transport can play its role and dramatically reduce CO2 emissions by 2050.

    Abstract: The negative impacts of climate change will hit poor people and poor countries disproportionately, and further compromise the achievement of their development objectives. Integrating Climate Change Adaptation into Development Co-operation provides essential information and advice on how to facilitate the integration of adaptation into development processes. The objectives of this policy guidance are to: i) promote understanding of the implications of climate change on development practice and the associated need to mainstream climate adaptation in development co-operation agencies and partner countries; ii) identify appropriate approaches for integrating climate change adaptation into development policies at national, sectoral and project levels and in urban and rural contexts; and iii) identify practical ways for donors to support developing country partners in their efforts to reduce their vulnerability to climate variability and climate change. While efforts to integrate climate change adaptation will be led by developing country partners, international donors have a critical role to play in supporting such efforts.

    Abstract: Scholars in the field of communication research have extensively studied television viewing in general and watching television news in particular. The book looks at the subject from an integrative theoretical perspective. Based on Schutzean sociology and action theoretical approaches to media use, the author argues that immediate social influences and other everyday life situations largely determine television use, and that the influence of short-term situational characteristics are often overlooked in person-centered explanatory models. In three empirical studies, the role of short-term situations and the influence of immediate social surroundings is analyzed. The use of Discrete Time Event History Analysis is an innovative way to look at household diary data. Findings reveal how family members influence each other in many ways. Watching television turns out to be an integral part of everyday life in the family, but also a force that may reduce family interaction. It is shown that television may serve as a surrogate for those family members that are not present, and that family members while present at home follow each others example. Partners are shown to mimic each other, children to mimic their parents, and parents follow the example set by their children. Television news viewing, in contrast to general television viewing is less determined by the immediate influence of others. Also, the individual motivations for news viewing vary throughout the day. First exposure to television news appears to be motivated by other factors than subsequent exposure. A need for 'surveillance' dominates first exposure, but subsequent exposure appears to be governed by other, more 'ritualistic' motivations. The book is important to scholars, graduate-level students and practitioners who are concerned with theoretical and methodological insights in the phenomenon of television viewing in everyday life.

    Abstract: Encouraging Student Interest in Science and Technology Studies examines overall trends in higher education enrolments and the evolution of S&T compared with other disciplines. The results suggest that although absolute numbers of S&T students have been rising as access to higher levels of education expands in OECD economies, the relative share of S&T students among the overall student population has been falling, The report shows that encouraging interest in S&T studies requires action to tackle a host of issues inside and outside the education system, ranging from teacher training and curriculum design to improving the image of S&T careers. Numerous examples of national initiatives are used to complement the analyses to derive a set of practical recommendations.

    Abstract: Film and video products take a huge variety of forms from modest training or promotion audio-visuals to blockbuster feature films that earn very large amounts of money from worldwide distribution. Production and distribution for any film or video product involve an extremely wide array of commercial interests often with quite different strategies. This study focuses on commercial entertainment products and production and distribution of films and television programs. It analyses the impact of digital content creation, distribution and use on value chains and business models of the film and video industry and explores the policy implications of these changes to identify how digital content may affect the function and position of participants in the industry along the value chain.

    Abstract: Demographic changes increasingly shape social policies as most OECD populations are ageing and include more migrants and “minorities”. Japan and Korea have already started to see their enrolments in tertiary education decline, but other countries like Turkey and Mexico can still expect a boom. Drawing on trend data and projections, this book takes an in-depth look at these important questions from both a qualitative and quantitative standpoint. Issues covered include the impact of demographic changes on student enrolment, educational attainment, academic staff and policy choices. Particular attention is given to how access policies determine the demographics of tertiary education, notably by examining access to higher education for disabled and migrant students. The book covers most OECD countries, illustrating the analysis with specific examples from France, Japan, Korea and the United States. This book is the first volume in the Higher Education to 2030 series, which takes a forward-looking approach to analysing the impact of various contemporary trends on tertiary education systems.     Abstract: Portugal’s tertiary education sector has expanded significantly over the last 20 years, but participation and overall educational attainment levels remain below European standards and enrolment rates have begun to decline. The OECD review recommends that Portugal’s national government should focus on strategic direction and leave higher education institutions wider latitude for accomplishing public priorities consistent with their mission. Among its proposals for reform, the review calls for the creation of a National Council on Higher Education to oversee Portugal’s higher education strategy. The review also calls for major changes in the governance and management of higher education institutions to bring them into line with national goals, encourage their responsiveness and efficiency, and improve their quality. Improving research and innovation is a key strategic objective of the Portuguese government, and the OECD review suggests a number of qualitative changes in Portugal’s tertiary education system to enhance performance in this area.

    Abstract: Our climate is changing. Less certain, however, is the timing and magnitude of climate change, and the cost of transition to a low-carbon world. This book identifies how climate change policy uncertainty may affect investment behaviour in the power sector. For power companies, where capital stock is intensive and long-lived, those risks rank among the biggest and can create an incentive to delay investment. Our analysis results show that the risk premiums of climate change uncertainty can add 40% of construction costs of the plant for power investors, and 10% of price surcharges for the electricity end-users. Climate Policy Uncertainty and Investment Risk tells what can be done in policy design to reduce these costs.

    Abstract: Despite significant efforts on the part of some countries, transport CO2 emissions have increased steadily over the last ten years. This report reviews the progress OECD and ECMT countries have made in reducing transport sector CO2 emissions and makes recommendations for the focus of future policies. It includes detailed country-by country information on measures adopted and transport sector emissions for the period 1990 - 2003.

    Abstract: Regional Trade Agreements (RTAs) have increased significantly in number over the past few years. The number of RTAs which include environmental provisions is also increasing. However, these provisions, and the experience related to their negotiation and implementation, have not been examined in depth yet. This study contributes to filling this gap. It provides an overview of approaches to environmental issues in RTAs and summarises country experiences in their negotiation and practical application. Regional and bilateral trade arrangements are surveyed, including customs unions and free trade agreements. The study is based on the analysis of RTA texts, and on literature examining their actual implementation, as well as on first-hand comments and input from experts from both OECD and non-OECD countries.

This conference proceedings of the OECD Blue Sky II Forum describes some of the policy needs, measurement issues, and challenges in describing cross-cutting and emerging topics in science, technology and innovation (STI). It also presents ideas to exploit existing data and develop new frameworks of measurement in order to guide future development of STI indicators at the OECD and beyond.

    Abstract: The relationship between environment and children’s health has been the subject of increasing interest these last ten years. For example, many OECD member countries are reporting asthma epidemics exacerbated by air pollution: in the United States nearly 1 in 13 school-age children (approximately 4.8 million) has asthma, and the rate is increasing more rapidly in school-age children than in any other group. The importance of this issue has resulted in a growing number of epidemiological studies aiming at better understanding and better characterising the relationship between environmental pollution and the health of children. However, in many respects, the valuation of children’s health strongly differs from the valuation of adults’ health and constitutes a real challenge for analysts as well as for decision-makers. Consequently, this book proposes an in depth analysis of the main methodological difficulties associated with estimating the social value of a reduction in risk to children. Questions such as how to elicit children’s preferences, what valuation methodology and benefit measure to choose, how to discount benefits to children’s health, and how to account for economic uncertainties in this specific context of economic valuation will be systematically examined in order to define key policy implications and to pave the way for further research.

    Abstract: Markets for many classes of potentially recyclable materials are growing. However, market failures and barriers are constraining some markets. Factors such as information failures, technological externalities, and market power can affect the prices, quantity, and quality of materials traded. This report presents the case for the use of 'industrial' policies which address such market failures and barriers and these policies are seen as complements to more traditional environmental policies. Indeed, encouraging ever-higher recycling rates in the absence of such complementary measures may impose very high social welfare costs. This publication covers in particular the markets for waste oils, waste plastics, and used rubber tyres.

    Abstract: Main description: Das Buch bietet eine umfassende Einführung in den aktuellen Stand der Medienlinguistik. So werden einerseits grundlegende kommunikationstheoretische Begriffe der Medienlinguistik vorgestellt ("Autor", "Medientext", "Intertextualität" usw.), andererseits werden - nach einem kurzen historischen Rückblick - die wichtigsten sprachlichen Phänomene in den heutigen deutschsprachigen Massenmedien Presse, Radio und Fernsehen an aktuellem Beispielmaterial beschrieben (Mündlichkeit und Schriftlichkeit, das sprachliche Profil des "Moderators", mediale Textsorten, insbesondere Nachrichten und ihre narratologischen Aspekte, Standardsprache und Dialekte etc.). Dabei ist auch das Verhältnis der Sprache zu anderen Zeichensystemen (Bilder, Geräusche) zu berücksichtigen. Ein Ausblick auf die "neuen" Medien skizziert, wie "neue" und "alte" Medien sich zueinander verhalten. Das Buch stellt eine umfassende Neubearbeitung und Weiterführung der zweiten Auflage des Göschen-Bandes "Sprache der Massenmedien" (1990) dar.
