    Abstract: Archival research into policing and surveillance of migrant women illuminates pressing contemporary issues. Examining little-known policing archives in France, Senegal, and Cambodia, Jennifer Anne Boittin unearths the stories of hundreds of women labelled 'undesirable' by the French colonial police and society in the early 20th century. These 'undesirables' were often women travelling alone, women who were poor or ill, women of colour, or women whose intimate lives were deemed unruly. In considering how ordinary women pursued autonomy, security, companionship, or simply a better existence in the face of surveillance and control, 'Undesirable' illuminates pressing contemporary issues of migration and violence.

    Abstract: Ties to the homeland have always been a central focus of global diaspora and migration studies. How and why do the descendants of migrants maintain their attachment to the ancestral homeland? To what extent do emotional ties bind second and later generations of migrants to that place? Tsypylma Darieva examines various actors, channels and sites of transnational Armenian engagement that generate new pathways of diasporic ›roots‹ mobility. Drawing on long-term ethnographic observations in Armenia and in the USA, she examines transnational flows of people, money and ideas to show the social and political significance that roots mobility acquires when the mythical ›homeland‹ becomes a real place.

Mirjam Aeschbach legt anhand einer detaillierten Analyse aktiver Medienbeiträge muslimischer Diskursakteurinnen von 2016 bis 2019 dar, wie diese in der Öffentlichkeit Bilder nationaler Zugehörigkeit aufgreifen und sich aneignen - und wie diese Bilder so potentiell in Frage gestellt werden

    Abstract: Towards a Vigilant Society sheds light on the emergence of a new society of vigilance, in particular the actions of anti-migrant groups around Dover and Calais. Based on field research on both sides of the channel, it studies the dynamics of these groups – midway between a social movement and vigilantism – at these two key points in the international migration route between the European Union and the United Kingdom. In recent years, a series of anti-migrant groups have been mobilising on both sides of the Channel to counter migrations. Their actions range from demonstrations, to violence against migrants. And by staging their actions on social media, which is an extraordinary sounding board, these groups can build an online community and a mass audience, influencing public opinion and even the migration policies of states.

While the book adopts an established view of language and society that is in keeping with the sociolinguistic paradigm developed in recent decades, it differs from earlier studies in that it assigns writing a central position. Sociolinguistics has long concentrated primarily on speech,but Florian Coulmas shows in this volume that the social importance of writing should not be disregarded: it is the most consequential technology ever invented; it suggests stability; and it defines borders. Linguistic studies have often emphasized that writing is external to language, but thediscipline nevertheless owes its analytic categories to writing.     Abstract: Der inklusive Freiwilligendienst weltwärts ist eine privilegierte Form der räumlichen Bewegung, die jedoch migrationsgesellschaftliche Differenz hervorbringen kann. Manuel Peters erkundet aus migrationspädagogischer und rassismuskritischer Perspektive die komplexen Aneignungsweisen rassifizierter Ordnungen. Mithilfe postkolonialer, macht- und rassismusanalytischer sowie bildungstheoretischer Ansätze zeigt er, wie Aneignungsweisen als spezifische, interaktiv hervorgebrachte und (global-)gesellschaftlich verortete Subjektivierungspraktiken bzw. Bildungsprozesse rekonstruiert werden können. Die weltwärts-Mobilität kann somit als bedeutsamer - postkolonialer - Zugehörigkeitskontext gedeutet werden, in dem sich vorherrschende Differenzordnungen der Migrationsgesellschaft aktualisieren

    Abstract: How to study a media object on the web that is at the same time a documentary, a reportage, and a game which combines both fiction and non-fiction elements? Nicole Braida digs into the discursive and material structures and infrastructures of serious games, text-adventures, newsgames, interactive maps and data visualizations, in which refugees and migrants become the subject of humanitarian discourse. Although the goal is to arouse empathy towards migrants, these »interactive practices« distinguish who is vulnerable and who is not. It supports the idea of a »migratory crisis«, which, the author argues, is actually the symptom of a deeper crisis of the humanitarian system itself.

    Abstract: This text offers the narratives of a group of privileged women who were immersed in a French lycée and later rebelled and fought for independence, starting with France's occupation of Vietnam and continuing through US involvement and life after war ends in 1975. Tracing the lives of nine women, the book reveals these women's stories as they forsook safety and comfort to struggle for independence, and describes how they adapted to life in the jungle, whether facing bombing raids, malaria, deadly snakes, or other trials.

While the concept has mainly gained traction in the cultural scene in Berlin, Germany, the contributions expand the field of study by attending to cultural expressions in literature, theatre, film, and art across various European societies, such as the United Kingdom, France, Finland, Denmark, and Germany. By doing so, they highlight this concept's potential and show how it can offer new perspectives on transformations caused by migration.

Am Fenster ihres Ullstein-Büros imaginiert Vicki Baum die Idee einer Telefonistin vor der Schaltwand und transferiert so ihren Roman in ein Theaterstück. Baum, die Telefonistin und die Frauen am Brückengeländer kehren alle den Rücken zum übrigen Raum. Und genauso ausgerichtet sitzen auch die Studierenden bei den berühmten Sit-ins der US-Bürgerrechtsbewegung am Lunch Counter. Kaum bekannt hingegen ist der Kampf der zweiten Frauenbewegung um den Zugang zu Bars, der weniger an der Theke als vor Gericht ausgefochten wurde.     Abstract: In 1955, the Soviet Union became the first country in the world to re-legalize abortion on the principle of women's rights to abortion. How could this happen in Stalinist society which prohibited feminist movements? Replacing the Dead finds an answer in previously secret archives that document the difficult decade after World War II, which killed 27 million Soviet citizens and the government's policy to increase fertility by promoting out-of-wedlock births. The result was an abortion battle between women, government, and Soviet legal and medical professionals that has continued for decades.

Der Anthropologe und Mediziner zeigt, wie Gesundheit und Gesundheitsversorgung durch die Schattenseiten der Konsumgesellschaft, durch Ressentiments gegen Einwander*innen und durch Rassismus leiden.Holmes' Material ist erschütternd und eindrucksvoll: Er wanderte mit seinen Begleiter*innen illegal durch die Wüste nach Arizona und wurde mit ihnen inhaftiert, bis sie abgeschoben wurden. Er lebte bei indigenen Familien in den Bergen von Oaxaca und in Farmarbeitslagern in den USA, baute Mais und Erdbeeren an und begleitete kranke Arbeiter*innen in Krankenhäuser. Diese »verkörperte Anthropologie« (Embodied Anthropology) vertieft unser theoretisches Verständnis dafür, wie schnell soziale Ungleichheiten in der Gesellschaft - und besonders im Gesundheitswesen - als normal und natürlich wahrgenommen werden

    Abstract: Well before the success of Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton, female artists were integral to the commercial expansion and aural reception of country music. Women in early country music took on and redefined the theatrical and musical roles of the hillbilly maiden, the unruly Okie, the singing cowgirl, and the honky-tonk angel in live performance, on radio, in film, and in the recording studio. This work accounts for the vibrant presence of female country artists through an interdisciplinary focus on performance and vocal expression in relation to the cultural currents of the 1930s and 1950s.

    Abstract: Sozialer Wandel hat seine eigene Theoretisierung eingeholt: Die modernisierungstheoretische Vorstellung eines linearen, rationalen, universalgesetzlichen Fortschritts stößt an die Grenzen ihrer Erklärungskraft. Julia Elven schlägt daher eine praxistheoretische Wandelforschung vor, die gesellschaftliche Transformationen auf Basis ihres konkreten praktischen Geschehens analysierbar macht. Sozialer Wandel kommt dann als dezentraler, multidirektionaler, kontingenter Prozess in den Blick, der unterschiedlichen Logiken zugleich folgt. Denn nicht in der Suche nach dem allgemeinen rationalen Prinzip hinter sozialen Dynamiken, sondern in der Rekonstruktion der Interferenzen divergierender Rationalitäten liegt der Schlüssel zum Verständnis sozialen Wandels.

    Abstract: Die Einführung in die Kultursoziologie in einer aktualisierten und erweiterten Neuauflage. »Kultur« ist fächerübergreifend einer der zentralen Schlüsselbegriffe gegenwärtiger Forschung. Schon um 1900 standen kulturtheoretische Fragen im Mittelpunkt der Soziologie. Seit dem Cultural Turn wurde »Kultur« schließlich zum allgemeinen Leitbegriff des Fachs. Die Soziologie versteht sich zunehmend als »Kulturwissenschaft«. Dieser Einführungsband nimmt dieses Selbstverständnis ernst. Er gibt einen systematischen Überblick über die Geschichte, Begriffe, Ansätze und Forschungsfelder der Kultursoziologie. Von den soziologischen Klassikern wie Max Weber und Georg Simmel bis hin zu aktuellen Kulturtheorien und Kulturforschungen wie den Visual, Governmentality oder Cultural Studies. Die Einführung gibt damit einen kompakten und systematischen Überblick über die wichtigsten kultursoziologischen Theorien von den Anfängen bis zur Gegenwart.

    Abstract: Madlen Preuß entwickelt ein quantitativ-empirisches Modell, das es erstmals ermöglicht, eine systematische und vergleichbare Erschließung der Etablierten-Außenseiter-Beziehung für größere soziale Einheiten zu vollziehen. Sie konzentriert sich dabei auf autochthone Deutsche, die gegenüber migrantischen Gruppen eine Etablierten-Perspektive einnehmen und den entsprechenden Status behaupten. Ihre Studie füllt damit eine wesentliche Lücke in der Forschung zur Etablierten-Außenseiter-Beziehung und zeigt einerseits, dass die Erklärungskraft des Modells trotz oder gerade wegen der fehlenden Referenz auf Religion und Kultur hoch ist, und das Modell andererseits fähig ist, relevante und weniger relevante Außenseiter-Gruppen zu identifizieren.

    Abstract: »Postmigrantisch« steht für gesellschaftliche Zustände, die durch die Erfahrung der Migration strukturiert sind. Migration wird dabei als soziale Praxis verstanden, die politisch, medial und sozial kontrovers verhandelt und reguliert wird - und gleichzeitig Gesellschaften nachhaltig prägt. In diesem Band geht es um eine Gegenwartsanalyse, die aktuelle gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen als Ganzes in den Blick nimmt. In den Beiträgen stehen nicht ›die Migrant*innen‹ im Mittelpunkt, sondern die Verwobenheiten von verschiedenen Akteur*innen, Geschichten und Kontexten. Postmigrantische Perspektiven werden hierbei mit transnationalen, postkolonialen und diversitätsbewussten Ansätzen zusammengebracht und mithilfe einer dezidiert feministischen, gendersoziologischen, intersektionalen Perspektive erweitert. Das Potenzial einer postmigrantischen Perspektive wird im Kontext von Gender, Transnationalität, Care und anderen Forschungsfeldern (neu) erprobt.

    Abstract: Hacking, as a mode of technical and cultural production, is commonly celebrated for its extraordinary freedoms of creation and circulation. Yet surprisingly few women participate in it: rates of involvement by technologically skilled women are drastically lower in hacking communities than in industry and academia. Hacking Diversity investigates the activists engaged in free and open-source software to understand why, despite their efforts, they fail to achieve the diversity that their ideals support. Christina Dunbar-Hester shows that within this well-meaning volunteer world, beyond the sway of human resource departments and equal opportunity legislation, members of underrepresented groups face unique challenges. She brings together more than five years of firsthand research: attending software conferences and training events, working on message boards and listservs, and frequenting hackerspaces.

    Abstract: Wie wirkt sich der aktuelle Islamdiskurs auf Bildungsbiografien junger Secondas aus? Wie beeinflussen unterschiedliche Differenzkategorien wie beispielsweise Gender und Religion die Bildungsbiografien? Wirken Sie intersektionell? Die Untersuchung legt dar, wie unterschiedlich junge Secondas aus der Schweiz mit der Herausforderung umgehen, als muslimische Frauen in einem tendenziell islamkritischen Umfeld bildungsbiografisch zu bestehen. Sie zeigt einerseits auf, mit welchen Bildungsbarrieren sie konfrontiert werden, andererseits legt sie basierend auf einer ethnographischen Forschung dar, wie die jungen Frauen auf unterschiedlichste "Taktiken" (De Certeau 1989) zurückgreifen, um auf bildungsbiografische Einschränkungen zu reagieren und diesen zu trotzen. Dabei wird diskutiert, inwiefern Religion als intersektionale, interdependente Analysekategorie gefasst werden kann.

'Subversive Spirits' presents a history of the figure in the United States and the United Kingdom from the 1920s to the present, focusing on the female ghost in heritage sites, theatre, Hollywood film, literature, and television in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Far from serving as passive helpmates in a private, domestic sphere, women assumed wartime roles as essential public actors, wielding muskets, hatchets, and makeshift weapons while fighting for their families, communities, and nations. Revealing the fundamental importance of martial womanhood in this era, Gina M. Martino places borderlands women in a broad context of empire, cultural exchange, violence, and nation building, demonstrating how women's war making was embedded in national and imperial strategies of expansion and resistance.

Könnte man also ein fernes Land in seiner Vielfalt und Prozesshaftigkeit verstehen, wenn man es in der »Migration« bereist? Amalia Barboza sucht nach einem relationalen und performativen Ansatz, um die Wege zu verfolgen, die sich in der Migration und in der Forschung kreuzen. Dabei wird ersichtlich, dass eine Nation ein lebendiges Konstrukt ist, welches immer wieder neu aus verschiedenen Perspektiven imaginiert und konstruiert wird.

Although the death toll has been rising for many years, the EU response remains fragmented and short sighted. Politicians frame these migration flows as an unprecedented crisis and emphasize migration control at the EU's external boundaries. In this context, 'At Europe's Edge' investigates why the EU prioritizes the fortification of its external borders; why migrants nevertheless continue to cross the Mediterranean and to die at sea; and how EU member states on the southern periphery respond to their new role as migration gatekeepers. This work addresses these questions by examining the relationship between the EU and Malta, a small state with an outsized role in migration politics as EU policies place it at the crosshairs of migration flows and controls.

Babb's 'Women's Place in the Andes' draws on long-term anthropological research to develop an analytical framework for reexamining the accumulated research of several decades-her own and that of others-on the complex and often ambiguous interworkings of gender, race, and indigeneity in Andean Peru. She deftly interweaves five new analytical chapters with six of her previously published works that exemplify changing currents in feminist and anthropological thought. She contends that discussion of ethnic and racial inequality in Peru has largely overlooked gender differences and draws on decolonial feminism to redress this problem and offer fresh new insights.

The same agitation that allowed blacks to vote also made it possible for increasing numbers of non-European immigrants to enter America for the first time.     Abstract: In this work, Paul Apostolidis asks what we can learn about social and economic precarity by considering the situation of Latin American migrant day laborers in the United States today. To do so, the author places Latino day laborers' commentaries in dialogue with critical social theory. Apostolidis sees these day laborers' circumstances both as exceptional and as synecdoches for precarious conditions that affect multitudes of workers. Through its combined approach to critical theory and field research with migrant workers, this text makes a case for a politics that is attuned to questions of time and advanced by precarious workers throughout society.

    Abstract: 'Beyond Respectability' charts the development of African American women as public intellectuals and the evolution of their thought from the end of the 1800s through the Black Power era of the 1970s. Eschewing the Great Race Man paradigm so prominent in contemporary discourse, Brittney C. Cooper looks at the far-reaching intellectual achievements of female thinkers and activists like Anna Julia Cooper, Mary Church Terrell, Fannie Barrier Williams, Pauli Murray, and Toni Cade Bambara. Cooper delves into the processes that transformed these women and others into racial leadership figures, including long-overdue discussions of their theoretical output and personal experiences. As Cooper shows, their body of work critically reshaped our understandings of race and gender discourse. It also confronted entrenched ideas of how - and who - produced racial knowledge.

    Abstract: One method of American territory expansion in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands was the denial of property rights to Mexican landowners, which led to dispossession. Many historical accounts overlook this colonial impact on Indigenous and Mexican peoples, and existing studies that do tackle this subject tend to privilege the male experience. Here, Karen R. Roybal recentres the focus of dispossession on women, arguing that gender, sometimes more than race, dictated legal concepts of property ownership and individual autonomy. Drawing on a diverse source base - legal land records, personal letters, and literature - Roybal locates voices of Mexican American women in the Southwest to show how they fought against the erasure of their rights, both as women and as landowners.

    Abstract: In order to re-consider the relationship between migration and society, Marc Hill and Erol Yildiz turn established certainties over and include the experience of migration. Their focus is on shared stories that show the versatility of urban community life. By doing so, they make migration the starting point of other analyses of society. Postmigrant visions serve as categories of the analysis of social situations of mobility and diversity, make ambiguities and marginalized memories that articulate social conditions visible. Contrasting ideas are put in the focus without overlooking conditions of dominance and structural barriers.

    Abstract: The Oxford Handbook on Women, Peace, and Security examines the significant and evolving international Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda, which scholars and practitioners have together contributed to advancing over almost two decades. Fifteen years since the passage of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000), the WPS agenda has never been more salient on the agenda of states and international organizations. The Global Study of 1325 ("Preventing Conflict, Securing Peace") commissioned by the UN Secretary-General and released in September 2015, however, found that there is a major implementation gap with respect to UNSCR 1325 that accounts for the gaping absence of women's participation in peace and transitional decision-making processes.

    Abstract: This book contributes to the understanding of smallholder agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa through addressing the dynamics of intensification and diversification within and outside agriculture, in contexts where women have much poorer access to agrarian resources than men. It uses a longitudinal cross-country comparative approach, relying on the Afrint dataset—unique household-level longitudinal data for six African countries collected over the period 2002–2013/15. The book first descriptively summarizes findings from the third wave of the dataset. The book nuances the current dominance of structural transformation narratives of agricultural change by adding insights from gender and village-level studies of agrarian change. It argues that placing agrarian change within broader livelihood dynamics outside agriculture, highlighting country- and region-specific contexts is an important analytical adaptation to the empirical realities of rural Africa. From the policy perspective, this book provides suggestions for more inclusive rural development policies, outlining the weaknesses of present policies illustrated by the currently gendered inequalities in access to agrarian resources. The book also provides country-specific insights from Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, and Zambia.
