Whether in a property dispute or a trial for murder, the aggrieved and accused would go to lay court where cases were resolved according to custom. What custom meant, however, went through a radical shift in the medieval period. Between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, custom went from being a largely oral and performed practice to one that was also conceptualized in writing. Based on French lawbooks known as coutumiers, Ada Maria Kuskowski traces the repercussions this transformation - in the form of custom from unwritten to written and in the language of law from elite Latin to common vernacular - had on the cultural world of law.     Abstract: Soigner les pauvres, telle est la vocation de milliers de jeunes femmes qui, tout au long du XIXe siècle, prennent le voile en France et concrétisent ainsi un désir de vie religieuse et de service. Cet engagement ouvre aux femmes des voies pour s'affirmer hors de la famille, dans l'espace public et le monde du travail. Infirmières ou pharmaciennes, responsables de services d'hôpitaux et d'hospices, ou gardes malades à domicile, ce sont les "bonnes" soeurs du XIXe siècle. Figures de la charité, elles sont aussi les chevilles ouvrières du système public de santé dont elles accompagnent la médicalisation. Dans une société confrontée à une nouvelle pauvreté massive et alors que l'Église catholique s'inquiète de la déchristianisation populaire, les soeurs soignantes répondent aux attentes sociales et sanitaires, religieuses et morales de leur temps. La laïcisation républicaine signe-t-elle leur disparition ? Rien n'est moins sûr à en regarder leur présence dans Paris au début du XXe siècle. S'appuyant sur de nombreuses archives des couvents et des institutions hospitalières, cette enquête questionne la vocation des soeurs soignantes dans leur quotidien auprès des pauvres de la capitale. Elle propose une histoire du care qui éclaire les enjeux profanes et spirituels de la relation de soin."

    Abstract: "En France, dans ce pays riche où l'agriculture se veut productiviste et exportatrice, une personne sur dix doit recourir à des dispositifs d'aide alimentaire. Les Restos du cœur en sont l'un des acteurs principaux. Que leur existence soit devenue indispensable révèle l'absurdité et la triple faillite de notre système agricole, malade d'un bout à l'autre de la chaîne. Mondialisé et industriel, celui-ci participe au désastre écologique en cours tandis que nombre d'agriculteurs français sombrent dans la pauvreté malgré un lourd labeur. A travers l'incroyable travail réalisé par l'association fondée par Coluche, il y a bientôt quarante ans, on pourrait croire que les dons de nourriture et de temps répondent au droit à l'alimentation. Pourtant, il n'en est rien. Sur le terrain, les bénévoles sont en souffrance. Ils constatent que leur action, loin d'aider à sortir de la pauvreté, consiste surtout à maintenir une paix sociale, en évitant des vols et des émeutes de la faim. Car l'impossibilité à accéder à la nourriture est une violence qui s'exerce contre les plus pauvres. On sort profondément ébranlé de cette enquête dans le monde invisible du quotidien de l'aide alimentaire.     Abstract: The late nineteenth century saw a rapid increase in colonial conflicts throughout the French and British empires. It was also the period in which the camera began to be widely available. Colonial authorities were quick to recognise the power of this new technology, which they used to humiliate defeated opponents and to project an image of supremacy across the world.Drawing on a wealth of visual materials, from soldiers' personal albums to the collections of press agencies and government archives, this book offers a new account of how conflict photography developed in the decades leading up to the First World War. It explores the various ways in which the camera was used to impose order on subject populations in Africa and Asia and to generate propaganda for the public in Europe, where a visual economy of violence was rapidly taking shape. At the same time, it reveals how photographs could escape the intentions of their creators, offering a means for colonial subjects to push back against oppression. --

    Abstract: Appelée de ses vœux par Lucien Febvre en 1941, l’histoire des sensibilités ou l’histoire des émotions a connu ces dernières années un écho remarquable chez les historien.ne.s, mais pas uniquement. Les émotions sont également devenues un objet d’étude à part entière dans d’autres domaines des sciences humaines et sociales, notamment en sociologie, en ethnographie, ou bien encore en sciences politiques et en philosophie. Cet ouvrage interdisciplinaire fait le choix d’appréhender les émotions sous le prisme de la politique et des médias en mettant en lumière leurs interdépendances aussi bien en France qu’en Allemagne aux XXe et XXIe siècles. L’objectif est de traiter de la question des transferts d’émotions entre les deux pays ainsi que de leur signification dans la construction d’une histoire européenne des émotions.
    Abstract: Die von Lucien Febvre 1941 geforderte Geschichte der Befindlichkeiten oder der Emotionen hat in den letzten Jahren ein bemerkenswertes Echo unter den HistorikerInnen gefunden. Aber auch in anderen Bereichen der Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften wie der Soziologie, der Ethnographie, der Politikwissenschaft und der Philosophie haben sich Emotionen zu einem eigenständigen Untersuchungsgegenstand entwickelt. In diesem interdisziplinär konzipierten Buch werden Emotionen durch das Prisma der Politik und der Medien betrachtet, wobei insbesondere deren deutsch- französischen Verflechtungen im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert ausgelotet werden. Ziel ist es, die Transfers von Emotionen zwischen den beiden Ländern und deren Bedeutung für die Konstruktion einer europäischen Geschichte der Emotionen zu hinterfragen.

    Abstract: "As eighteenth-century historians have made the 'global turn,' portions of Atlantic history have received more attention than others. Studies of trade, empire, and state-building have proliferated, but the interconnected histories of resistance against that world's greatest concentrations of power remain disproportionally overlooked. This book aims to be the first to demonstrate the rich web of interrelations between the increasingly inclusive and cosmopolitan social movements of the Age of Revolution. Liberty and rights, concepts previously restricted to certain nations and privileged groups, became potentially applicable to anyone, anywhere. Only low barriers existed between movements and countries: indeed, many activists desired the reduction of borders, boundaries, and old hatreds to right past abuses. Exuberant hopes spread that the political, economic, class, religious, racial, national, and other Old Regime barriers could be abolished - perhaps quickly"--

    Abstract: This book is organized around the personal struggles of ten extraordinary French women activists: Eugenie Niboyet, Eugenie Foa, Suzanne Voilquin, Josephine Bachellery, Pauline Roland, Jeanne Deroin, Elisa Lemonnier, Desiree Gay, Adele Esquiros, and Marie Noemie Constant. Ranging in age from 52 to 20 in 1848, coming from different economic backgrounds, these women share a common quest to be included in the economic and political rights won by the revolt against the July Monarchy.Banding together in the face of exclusion from the right to work guaranteed to all men in February 1848, they write petitions to the Provisional Government, and create the first daily feminist newspaper, "La Voix des femmes." The newspaper is a forum for their demands: midwives who demand to be paid as civil servants, domestic workers who demand support while unemployed, teachers who demand opportunities for higher education and for higher wages. The right to vote and the right to divorce are debated in the newspaper.Seeking to widen their support, Niboyet and her cohort launch a political club, Le Club de femmes, which is ridiculed in the satiric press. The women activists of 1848 do not withdraw from the public sphere. They form workers' associations. Deroin and Roland are imprisoned for their activism. All continue to work for women's rights as teachers, writers, and artists.The women of 1848 inspire successive generations of women to continue their struggle

    Abstract: "This edited collection of essays focuses on the topic of protest during the Enlightenment of the long eighteenth century (roughly 1670-1833). Resistance in the eighteenth century was extensive, and the act of protest to foment meaningful societal change took on many forms from the circulation of ballads, swearing of oaths, to riots and work stoppages, or the composition of essays, novels, posters, caricatures, political cartoons as well as theater and opera.     Abstract: Based on four years of embedded observation in the cabinet of a European Commissioner, this book develops a sociology of international political work. Empirically, it offers an insider's chronicle of the European Union between 2015 and 2019. The analysis traces the successes and failures of Commissioner Pierre Moscovici and his team on five issues that defined European politics between 2015 and 2019: the Greek crisis, budgetary disputes with Spain and Portugal, the rise of populism in Italy, the reform of the eurozone, and the fight against tax evasion. The aim is not to ascertain whether the Commission's policy was good or bad, but to understand how political work is done in a European Union where the 'spectacle of power' is blurred by 24 official languages, 28 national histories, a powerful technocracy, and sometimes opaque institutions. 0As a life-long socialist politician and former French finance minister, Pierre Moscovici was perhaps the most intensely political character in Jean-Claude Juncker's self-styled 'Political Commission'. Brandishing his leftist identity, rejecting technocratic talk, he surrounded himself with staffers sharing his ambition - but also critical of his actions.     Abstract: "Two hundred years after his death, Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) continues to resonate as a fascinating, ambivalent, and polarizing figure. Differences of opinion as to whether Bonaparte should be viewed as the executor of the principles of the French Revolution or as the figure who was principally responsible for their corruption are as pronounced today as they were at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Contributing to what had been an uneasy German relationship with the French Revolution, the rise of Bonaparte was accompanied by a pattern of Franco-German hostilities that inspired both enthusiastic support and outraged dissent in the German-speaking states. The fourteen essays that comprise Inspiration Bonaparte examine the mythologization of Napoleon in German literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and explore the significant impact of Napoleonic occupation on a broad range of fields including philosophy, painting, politics, the sciences, education, and film. As the contributions from leading scholars emphasize, the contradictory attitudes toward Bonaparte held by so many prominent German thinkers are a reflection of his enduring status as a figure through whom the trauma of shattered late-Enlightenment expectations of sociopolitical progress and evolving concepts of identity politics is mediated. Les interprétations que propose l'auteur doivent, quant à elles, beaucoup à Marx, mais à un Marx mis "sous surveillance statistique". À gauche, comme à droite, elles paraîtront à beaucoup étonnantes, amusantes, contrariantes, ou angoissantes. Cet empirisme sans concession conduit même Emmanuel Todd à réviser radicalement certaines de ses analyses antérieures. À la lecture de ce livre riche, stimulant, provocateur, la vie politique des années 1992-2019 prend tout son sens : une longue comédie politique où s'invitent les classes sociales.     Abstract: "THE BIRTH OF SOLIDARITY traces the emergence of social welfare legislation through debates about workplace accidents in France. François Ewald shows that with industrialization in the 19th century, workplace accidents became increasingly frequent and complex, and the rise of statistics and insurance shifted ideas about who should be held responsible. Whereas early commentators claimed workers and their patrons were responsible for the consequences of workplace accidents, by 1898 the French government declared that workplace accidents needed to be covered by a state-regulated social security policy. This shift in approach marked the emergence of the modern French welfare state. The book is divided into three parts. In the first, Ewald looks at the 1841 law governing child labor in factories and 1830s court cases concerning workplace accidents to show how these industrial regulations challenged the earlier liberal philosophies involving a social contract, which had assumed individual benevolence as the basis for all social assistance. In contrast, new forms of patronage emerging in the 1840s required French employers to provide compensation for their workers, including pensions, education, and company stores. The second part considers the development of insurance as an outgrowth of the philosophy of Adolphe Quételet, who applied probabilistic calculus to social phenomena, like risk. Ewald shows that insurance gave workers a way to save for the future and the wealthy a guarantee against accidents. The third part looks at legislators' increased focus on social solidarity rather than individual responsibility in the latter half of the 19th century, with the 1898 labor law solidifying the government's role as a regulator acting on behalf of workers, and insurance agents' role in assessing fault and responsibility. Ewald, who had been a Maoist activist during the French student uprising of May 1968, became Michel Foucault's doctoral student and assistant in the 1970s. When Foucault's partner Daniel Defert was commissioned by the French Labour Ministry to do a series of studies on the history of workplace accidents, Defert enlisted Ewald, along with a number of Foucault's other students, to conduct the research. This research eventually formed the basis of Ewald's dissertation and first book, Histoire de l'Etat providence: Les Origines de la solidarité, originally published in 1986, revised in 1996, and now translated into English for the first time, with a ...
