    Abstract: "In The Culture Trap, Derron Wallace argues that the overreliance on culture to explain Black students' achievement and behavior in schools is a trap that undermines the historical factors and institutional processes that shape how Black students experience schooling. This trap is consequential for a host of racial and ethnic minority youth in schools, including Black Caribbean young people in London and New York City. Since the 1920s, Black Caribbeans in New York have been considered a high-achieving Black model minority. Conversely, since the 1950s, Black Caribbeans in London have been regarded as a chronically underachieving minority. In both contexts, however, it is often suggested that Caribbean culture informs their status, whether as a celebrated minority in the US or as a demoted minority in Britain. Drawing on rich ethnographic observations, as well as interview and archival data from two of the largest public schools in London and New York City, Wallace interrogates the fault lines of these claims, and highlights the influence of colonialism, class, and context in shaping Black Caribbeans' educational experiences. As racial and ethnic achievement gaps and discussions about what to do about them persist in the US and Britain, Wallace shows how culture is at times used as an alibi for racism in schools, and points out what educators, parents, and students can do to change it.--

    Abstract: In dieser Studie wird untersucht, wie auf Fähigkeiten basierende soziale Erwartungen, die in weibliche Normen eingebettet sind, die Konzeptualisierung von Behinderung beeinflussen und subjektive Strategien zur Aushandlung des Behindertenstatus im Prozess des Werdens einer "behinderten Frau" formen. Ich stützte mich auf die Theorie des sozialen Konstruktivismus (Berger und Luckmann 1966) und untersuchte Erfahrungen von zwanzig körperbehinderten Frauen in Pakistan. Ziel war es, die soziokulturellen Prozesse und Praktiken zu untersuchen, die behinderten Frauen in ihrem Lebensverlauf Wissen über Geschlecht und Behinderung vermitteln. Biographien von drei blinden Frauen wurden für eine detaillierte Fallrekonstruktion ausgewählt. Die Analyse ergab, dass die Interpretation der Behinderung durch die Familie die soziale Integration behinderter Frauen und ihr Verständnis von Behinderung erheblich beeinflusst. In Familien mit einem niedrigeren sozioökonomischen Hintergrund verstärken tief verinnerlichte Weiblichkeitsnormen die soziale Ausgrenzung blinder Frauen. Umgekehrt wurde festgestellt, dass die Familien der Oberschicht aktiv an der Überwindung der Behinderungsbarrieren mitwirken, indem sie behinderten Frauen instrumentelle Unterstützung gewähren. Die Wertschätzung der Familie für die Hochschulbildung ist mit dem Wunsch verbunden, die Heiratsaussichten ihrer jungen, körperlich behinderten Tochter zu verbessern. Die behinderten Frauen sehen jedoch in der Hochschulbildung ein Mittel, um unabhängig zu werden. Da die gesellschaftliche Anerkennung als "Frau" eng mit der Fähigkeit von Frauen verbunden ist, die Erwartungen an die Geschlechterrolle zu erfüllen, beziehen sich körperlich behinderte Frauen stark auf die kulturelle Vorstellung von Weiblichkeit, um dem Behinderungsaspekt ihrer Identität zu widerstehen. Folglich stellen sie die repressiven Normen der Weiblichkeit nicht unbedingt in Frage, obwohl sie gebildete und wirtschaftlich unabhängige Frauen sind.
    Abstract: This study investigates how ability based social expectations embedded in feminine norms affect the conceptualisation of disability and shape subjective strategies for negotiating disabled status in the process of becoming a ‘disabled woman’. I drew on the theory of social constructivism (Berger and Luckmann 1966) and researched the biographical experiences of twenty (20) young physically disabled women, living in Pakistan. The purpose was to investigate the sociocultural processes and practices that provide disabled women with knowledge about gender and disability in their life course. Among twenty interlocutors, the biographies of three blind women were selected for detailed case-reconstruction. Analysis revealed that the family’s interpretation of their daughter’ disability significantly influences the social integration of disabled women and their understanding of disability. In families with a lower socioeconomic background, deeply internalised norms of femininity intensify the social exclusion of blind women. Conversely, the upper class families were found to be active in overcoming the disabling barriers by providing means of instrumental support to disabled women. The research demonstrated that higher education is comprehended by the interlocutors and their families as the key source of gaining social inclusion. The family’s appreciation of higher education is intertwined with their desire to enhance the marriage prospects of their young physically disabled daughter. However, disabled women perceive higher education as a means of becoming economically independent. Since social recognition as ‘woman’ is closely associated with women’s ability to fulfil gender role expectations, physically disabled women relate strongly to the cultural notion of femininity to resist the disability aspect of their identity. Consequently, they do not absolutely challenge the repressive norms of femininity despite being educated and economically independent women.

    Abstract: "This Element explores approaches to locating and examining social identity in corpora with and without the aid of demographic metadata. This is a key concern in corpus-aided studies of language and identity, and this Element sets out to explore the main challenges and affordances associated with either approach and to discern what either approach can (and cannot) show. It describes two case studies which each compare two approaches to social identity variables - sex and age - in a corpus of 14-million words of patient comments about NHS cancer services in England. The first approach utilises demographic tags to group comments according to patients' sex/age while the second involves categorising cases where patients disclose their sex/age in their comments. This Element compares the findings from either approach, with the approaches themselves being critically discussed in terms of their implications for corpus-aided studies of language and identity."     Abstract: This is the first extensive study of Old English to utilise the insights and methodologies of sociolinguistics. Building on previous philological and historical work, it takes into account the sociology and social dialectology of Old English and offers a description of its speech communities informed by the theory of social networks and communities of practice. Specifically, this book uses data from historical narratives and legal documents and examines the interplay of linguistic innovation, variation, and change with such sociolinguistic parameters as region, scribal office, gender, and social status. Special attention is given to the processes of supralocalisation and their correlation with periods of political centralisation in the history of Anglo-Saxon England.

    Abstract: "Anchored in historical pragmatics, historical sociolinguistics, and corpus linguistics, this book weaves together a powerful narrative of the significance of stance marking in the history of English. Focusing on the community of practice that developed during the witch trials in Salem (Massachusetts) in 1692-1693, it showcases how witnesses and the recorders of their ca. 450 depositions deployed linguistic features to signal the evaluation of experiences with alleged witchcraft, the intensification of those experiences, and the sources of the witnesses' knowledge. The resulting stance profiles for groups of depositions, witnesses, and recorders highlight varying strategies of claiming, supporting, and boosting the importance of the evidence and the role of the witnesses within the community of practice. With its innovative focus on sociopragmatic variation in a historical community, the book demonstrates the essential contribution of synchronic-historical research to the analysis, description, and theorization of stance and historical English more broadly"--

    Abstract: "This book considers teaching in modern institutional settings, among other things, as the ethical questioning and reversal of passively accepted prejudices, particularly in contexts of diversities and inequalities. Its thematic focus is the ethics of teacher-learner and learner-learner relationships within the democratic setup, and the possibilities of critique and transformation emerging out of such a relationship. The first theme of the book is diversity and pluralism, the second is the question of inequality in such contexts of radical diversity. With respect to this question, an unavoidable phenomenon of our times is the capitalisation of education and the reductionist view of learners as customers and consumers of knowledge. The approach to education that sees students merely as skilled human resources to be readied for the job market militates against critical thinking and do not respond appropriately to the questions of diversity and inequality. Thus, a significant focus of the book is the impact of inherited inequalities of caste and race on classroom ambience and teachers' interventions in the modern institutional context. The pertinent question is the increasing unwillingness of teachers to recognise and challenge discriminatory views and play their role in social transformation. In this regard, the teaching and learning of the humanities is also investigated. Teaching and the traditional classroom, it is often said, may not be required in the future as machines and remotely located teachers/explicators might claim their place. Hence, another question of focus is whether such a future would be hospitable to the critical task of education to cultivate young citizens of democracies."

    Abstract: This inter-disciplinary book is the first in an Irish context to address issues connected with the ‘super-diversifying’ of language and society engendered by recent and historical migrations. It analyses novel data from interviews with allochthonous and autochthonous groups of monolingual and plurilingual youngsters living in Northern Ireland. A key aim is to test models within second language acquisition and language variation and change research. Another goal is to examine the extent to which distinctive migratory trends generated changes in the language ecologies of communities on the island of Ireland as well as globally in regions where the Irish settled intensively from the 1700s. The book also compares contemporary migratory experiences with historical records to further our understanding of the dynamics of identification through language across time. The first-ever book devoted to all aspects of the sociolinguistics of globalization and migration in Northern Ireland will be welcomed by scholars interested in the consequences for ethnolinguistic vitality of large-scale population movements.     Abstract: "Drawing on the increased scholarly interest in women of the Meiji period, the present book considers the significance and influence of elite, educated Meiji women and their role in shaping the national identity of women in modern Japan. Carrying over these considerations both from previous English and Japanese scholarship, this study interrogates the political and cultural forces that positioned women as delegates of the Meiji empress' court or as exemplary Japanese women. It argues that the network of women emerging from the empress' court negotiated the visually, culturally, and educationally circulated feminine ideals and its effects that were carried out as components of a modern Japanese woman's identity"--

Three analytical approaches are introduced and compared, describing a wide range of texts from the perspectives of register, genre, and style. The primary focus of the book is on the analysis of registers. Part 1 introduces an analytical framework for studying registers, genre conventions, and styles. Part 2 provides detailed descriptions of particular text varieties in English, including spoken interpersonal varieties (conversation, university office hours, service encounters), written varieties (newspapers, academic prose, fiction), and emerging electronic varieties (e-mail, internet forums, text messages). Finally, Part 3 introduces advanced analytical approaches using corpora, and discusses theoretical concerns, such as the place of register studies in linguistics, and practical applications of register analysis.     Abstract: "This is the first text to address British Chinese culture. It explores British Chinese cultural politics in terms of national and international debates on the Chinese diaspora, race, multiculture, identity and belonging, and transnational 'Chineseness'. Collectively, the essays look at how notions of 'British Chinese culture' have been constructed and challenged in the visual arts, theatre and performance, and film, since the mid-1980s. They contest British Chinese invisibility, showing how practice is not only heterogeneous, but is forged through shifting historical and political contexts; continued racialization, the currency of Orientalist stereotypes and the possibility of their subversion; the policies of institutions and their funding strategies; and dynamic relationships with transnationalisms.     Abstract: Neue Verfahren, neue Organisationen oder neue Formen des Denkens sind alles Arten der Innovation. Trotz einer beschleunigten Verstärkung des Aufwands für Bildung in Brasilien startend in 2005 sind soziale Innovationen nur in Form von Bildungsinitiativen von kommunitären und Nichtregierungs-Organisationen (NGO) weit über das Land verteilt. In dieser Arbeit wird untersucht, inwieweit Bildungsinnovationen in Brasilien auf diese Vernachlässigung durch den Staat reagieren und welche Akteure Innovationen auf lokaler Ebene unterstützen. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit wird dabei der Rolle der Lehrer in Sozialinnovationen gewidmet. Durch einen historischem Ansatz wird in dieser Arbeit die Beziehung von Sozialinnovationen und großen radikalen Umbrüchen, Sozialbewegungen und Reformen in Brasilien beobachtet. Durch Nutzung von Interviews und Fokusgruppen werden zwei Fallstudien in São Paulo analysiert: eine an einer Schule am Stadtrand und eine in einer NGO im Stadtzentrum. Die Ergebnisse legen nahe, dass durch Innovationen neue Regeln und Verfahren eingeführt werden, die ein Subystem erzeugen, das die lokalen Machtverhältnisse verändert. Die NGO hat neue Verbindungen zwischen Schulen, privaten Akteuren, NGOs und der Kommunalverwaltung hergestellt und mit sozialen Netzwerken basierend auf Bildung und Kunst gearbeitet. die Schule hat ein neues Modell eingeführt bei dem Schule und Gemeinschaft zusammen die gemeinsamen Probleme von Unsicherheit und Bildung lösen. Sozialinnovationen umfassen die dringendsten Probleme in einer Gemeinschaft, die nicht auf ein Feld beschränkt sein müssen. Diese Forschung trägt zum besseren Verständnis von Sozialinnovationen, mit Fokus auf Brasilien, in den Sozialwissenschaften und in der Politikwissenschaft bei.
    Abstract: New methods, new organizations or new forms of thinking are all forms of innovation. Despite the increased spending on education in Brazil from 2005 onwards, social innovations have only spread in the country in the form of community participation and non-governmental organization’s initiatives for education. This study investigates to what extent innovations in education in Brazil respond to omissions on the part of the state and the drivers that foster innovation at a local level. Particular attention is devoted to the role of teachers in social innovation. Through a historical approach this study observes the relationship between social innovation and major radical changes, social movements and reforms in Brazil. Drawing on semi-structured interviews and focus groups, two case studies in São Paulo were analysed: one in a school in the urban periphery of the city and an NGO in the city centre. The findings suggest that innovations introduce new rules and practices, creating a subsystem which modifies local relations of power. The NGO established new relations between schools, private actors, NGOs and local government and worked with social networks through education and art. The school implemented a new model that brought the school and community together to solve common problems of insecurity and education. Social innovations embrace the most urgent needs in a community, which are not limited to one field. This research contributes to sociology and political science for a better understanding of social innovations and community participation, specifically in the Brazilian context.
