    Abstract: Based on several years of fieldwork in Egypt and Turkey, this book tells the stories of charity providers and volunteers. The book also places their stories within the overall development of Islamic ethics. Muslim charity, Tugal argues, has interacted with Christian and secular Western ethics over the centuries, which themselves have a conflict-ridden and still evolving history. The overall arch that connects all of these distinct elements is (a combined and uneven) liberalization. Liberalization tends to transform care into a cold, calculating, and individualizing set of practices. Caring for the Poor meticulously documents this insidious process in Egypt and Turkey, while also drawing attention to its limits and contradictions (by using the American case to highlight the contested nature of liberalization even in its world leader). However, as historians have shown, charitable actors have intervened in decisive ways in the rise and demise of social formations. Tugal raises the possibility, especially through his study of two controversial Turkish organizations, that Islamic charity might appropriate elements of liberalism to shift the world in a post-liberal direction

    Abstract: "This book argues that the runaway popularity of Pentecostal Christianity on the Zambian Copperbelt is a result of this religion's capacity to produce novel forms of value realization. A close analysis of the relationships that form in Pentecostal churches reveals that Pentecostal social life is structured around an animating idea - a value - called 'moving by the Spirit.' Moving by the Spirit entails personal advancement both with regard to material prosperity and religious skill or charisma. While moving by the Spirit makes Pentecostalism attractive, it is difficult for Pentecostal believers to balance prosperity against charisma without reproducing divisions in economic status. These divisions undermine the social world of the church by limiting the access of poorer believers to the relationships with their leaders - relationships through which the value of moving by the Spirit is most effectively realized"--Provided by publisher

For over 400 years, the Yoruba have straddled two geocultural spheres: one reaching north over the Sahara to the world of Islam, the other linking them to the Euro-American world via the Atlantic. These two external spheres were the source of contrasting cultural influences, notably those emanating from the world religions. Moreover, the Yoruba not only imported Islam and Christianity; they exported their own orisa-religion to the New World. Before the voluntary modern diaspora that has brought many Yoruba to Euro-America, tens of thousands had been sold as slaves to the New World, bringing with them the worship of the orisa. Ob Sakrament, ›weltlich Ding‹ oder Vertrag, ob unauflöslich oder nicht - es gibt viele Punkte, an denen sich Debatten entzünden können. Letztlich sind Angehörige beider Religionen mit den Anforderungen einer pluralistischen und säkularen Gesellschaft konfrontiert, die auch alternative Lebensformen kennt. Angesichts dieser Entwicklungen kommen in diesem Band christliche und muslimische Stimmen zu Wort, die aus ganz unterschiedlichen Perspektiven heraus Aspekte der Ehe und ihrer Bedeutung in der heutigen Gesellschaft beleuchten.

    Abstract: "Sociology of Shi'ite Islam is a comprehensive study of the development of Shi'ism. Its bearers first emerged as a sectarian elite, then a hierocracy and finally a theocracy. Imamate, Occultation and the theodicy of martyrdom are identified as the main components of the Shi'ism as a world religion. In these collected essays Arjomand has persistenly developed a Weberian theoretical framework for the analysis of Shi'ism, from its sectarian formation in the eighth century through the establishment of the Safavid empire in the sixteenth century, to the Islamic revolution in Iran in the twentieth century. These studies highlight revolutionary impulses embedded in the belief in the advent of the hidden Imam, and the impact of Shiʻite political ethics on the authority structure of pre-modern Iran and the constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran."     Abstract: Die vorliegende Studie zeichnet auf der Basis bislang nur in Manuskriptform zugänglicher Quellen aus Kirchenarchiven in Aleppo und Damaskus einen Konflikt zwischen gesellschaftlichen Gruppen mit komplexen Profilen nach. Dafür werden miteinander verflochtene politische, wirtschaftliche und administrative Ursachen der Ereignisse analysiert, die mit in der Frühzeit der Tanzimat-Reformen initiierten Prozessen des Wandels verbunden waren.
    Abstract: Die Untersuchung richtet den Fokus insbesondere auf den städtischen Raum, der bedeutende historische Entwicklungen reflektiert, die wiederum auf ihn zurückwirken. Diese Perspektive ermöglicht es, eine Geschichte der Aleppiner Bevölkerung zu entwerfen, über die verfügbare Quellen meist schweigen.

    Abstract: Dieses Buch ist das Standardwerk zur Geschichte von Religion und Frömmigkeit in Deutschland seit 1945.In vielen Teilen der Welt war und ist das soziale Leben von religiösen Vorstellungen durchtränkt. In Westeuropa wie auch in Deutschland verhält es sich nicht mehr so: Seit Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs erleben wir einen beispiellosen Traditionsbruch innerhalb der christlichen Konfessionen. Während die unmittelbare Nachkriegszeit noch von der Idee einer umfassenden Rechristianisierung geprägt war, hat sich diese Vorstellung wenige Jahrzehnte später verflüchtigt. Die individuelle Frömmigkeitspraxis schwindet, die Gotteshäuser werden leerer. Hinzu kommt, dass sich auch die christlichen Kirchen selbst in dieser Transformation umfassend gewandelt haben: Der strafende Gott hat sich allmählich zum liebenden Vater entwickelt, die Christenlehre zum Religions- und Ethikunterricht. Diese Entwicklung betrifft nicht nur die Kirchen selbst, sondern verändert auch die politische Kultur insgesamt: Idealbilder und Praxis von Kernbereichen des gesellschaftlichen Lebens wie Familie, Sexualität, Bildung, aber auch politische Entwürfe sind immer weniger christlich geprägt, so dass der gesellschaftliche und politische Einfluss der Kirchen abnimmt. Dennoch aber ist die Vorstellung vom Verschwinden der Religion nicht haltbar. Ein populärreligiöser Markt boomt, spirituelle Ratgeber werden als Lebenshelfer konsultiert, Religionsvertreter als Berater in Fragen der letzten Dinge um ihre Meinung gebeten. Wie lassen sich die verschiedenen Ebenen dieses Wandels erklären? Welche Konsequenzen zeitigt er für die religiösen Gemeinschaften, vor allem aber für unser Gemeinwesen insgesamt? Und: In welche Richtung wird sich das religiöse Feld zukünftig entwickeln? Diese Fragen beantwortet Thomas Großbölting in seiner Geschichte des Christentums in Deutschland von 1945 bis heute.

    Abstract: Pacifism is popular. Many hold that war is unnecessary, since peaceful means of resolving conflict are always available, if only we had the will to look for them. Or they believe that war is wicked, essentially involving hatred of the enemy and carelessness of human life. Or they posit the absolute right of innocent individuals not to be deliberately killed, making it impossible to justify war in practice. Peace, however, is not simple. Peace for some can leave others at peace to perpetrate mass atrocity. What was peace for the West in 1994 was not peace for the Tutsis of Rwanda. Therefore, against the virus of wishful thinking, anti-military caricature, and the domination of moral deliberation by rights-talk In Defence of War asserts that belligerency can be morally justified, even though tragic and morally flawed. Recovering the Christian tradition of reflection running from Augustine to Grotius, this book affirms aggressive war in punishment of grave injustice. Morally realistic in adhering to universal moral principles, it recognises that morality can trump legality, justifying military intervention even in transgression of positive international law-as in the case of Kosovo. Less cynical and more empirically realistic about human nature than Hobbes, it holds that nations desire to be morally virtuous and right, and not only to be safe and fat. And aspiring to practical realism, it argues that love and the doctrine of double effect can survive combat; and that the constraints of proportionality, while real, are nevertheless sufficiently permissive to encompass Britain`s belligerency in 1914-18. Finally, in a painstaking analysis of the Iraq invasion of 2003, In Defence of War culminates in an account of how the various criteria of just war should be thought together. It also concludes that, all things considered, the invasion was justified.

    Abstract: In the era of 'post-Christendom', how can church as a sociological reality be switched on to the destructive dangers, yet constructive possibilities, of 'power' flowing in and around its community? Attuned to the current distrust of church power, this book creatively works out responses that could turn painful censure into a revisioning of church power relations, helped by neglected critical studies. The approach exposes a complexity to power, and filters that insight into a theology of church. Much attention is paid in the book to the relevance to a religious community of post-modern philosopher Michel Foucault and of recent feminism.The topic of power has universal importance in the study of religion, though the response to analysis and critique in this book is drawn specifically from Christian sources. Kearsley concludes with an exploration for a future renovated, self-critical, authentic and growing community, sensitive to power while remaining in line with classic Christianity.

Von ihnen erzählt er auf kurzweilige und unterhaltsame Weise, stets auf der Grundlage solider theologischer Recherchen.
