    Abstract: In seiner Holzwerkstatt in St. Magdalena (Gsiestal) stellt Konrad Geitel aus Zirbelholzdauben, die mit Eisenreifen zusammengehalten werden, ein Stoßbutterfaß mit Stempel, Deckel und Haltebrett her. Das Butterfaß wird in die kreisrunde Öffnung des Haltebretts gestellt und von Halteseilen mit Holzhaken festgehalten. Zum Abschluß werden das Butterfaß mit roter und die Eisenreifen mit grüner Ölfarbe bemalt.
    Abstract: In his small woodworking shop at St. Magdalena (Gsiestal) Konrad Gietel is making staves from pine wood for a churn. First he assembles the staves, then he applies cold glue, and finally he fits iron straps around the churn to keep the staves tightly together. After some time, while the glue has set, rough patches on the wood are removed with a plane, and the inside and outside surfaces are made smooth. A bottom piece is fitted. Gietel has cut a wooden die and fits a long handle. He makes the cover plug on a wood turning lathe, and then fits the churning board with the ropes. The churn (Schlacker) is finished by painting the staves red and the iron straps green.

    Abstract: In St. Magdalena (Gsiestal) bereitet der Weißberg-Bauer seine oberschlächtige Wassermühle zum Mahlgang vor. Er reinigt und schärft die Mühlsteine, indem er die Mahlflächen des Laufers und Legers mit dem Flachspitzhammer und dem Flachriffelhammer bearbeitet. Nach dem Zusammensetzen der Mahlvorrichtung wird die Technik der Kraftübertragung vom Schaufelrad über den Mittelpam zum Langeisen, und damit zum Mahlstein, gezeigt. Im Anschluß daran erfolgt der erste Mahlgang.
    Abstract: The farmer "Weißbergbauer" is getting his private mill ready for operation. He cleans the millstones and sharpens them. He works the surface of the runner (upper millstone) and of the bottom millstone with a pointed flat hammer and a flat fluting hammer, respectively. After the grinding mechanism is assembled, the film shows the technique of transferring the power from the bucket wheel through the central shaft to the long iron and thus to the millstone. Then follows an initial milling operation.

    Abstract: A block of wood about 30 cm long is cut with an axe out of a tree trunk. Measurements with compasses are taken at the upper cutting surface. The block is then hollowed out with a gouge, and its outer surface and handle are fashioned with a cutting knife.

    Abstract: Nachdem ein älterer Mann aus Ban Alm Bambusstreifen zubereitet hat, umflicht er zur Verstärkung einen bereits fertiggestellten Bambuskorb: den Boden und den oberen Teil des Korbes in randparalleler Flechttechnik und die untere Korbhälfte mit einem offenen Dreirichtungsgeflecht. Der Korbdeckel wird in Diagonalgeflecht hergestellt.
    Abstract: A bamboo basket, which is already finished is given a plaited coat to strengthen it. The plaitings round the bottom and the upper half of the basket run parallel to the edges whereas that covering the lower half is an open three-directional plaiting. A diagonal plaiting technique is used to make the lid.

    Abstract: Ein Schmied aus Ban Meo Mai schmilzt Silber in einem tönernen Schmelztiegel und gießt es zu einem Barren, den er zu einem dünnen Stab aushämmert und einem Zieheisen zu Draht auszieht. Dann dreht er ihn auf einer Eisenwinde zu einer Spirale und schlägt diese mit einem Meißel zu kleinen Silberringen auf, die er zu einer Kette zusammenfügt.
    Abstract: A smith pours silver from a clay crucible; he then hammers out the resulting ingot into a thin rod which he draws into wire by means of a wire-drawing plate. He then gives it a spiral form by turning it on an iron windlass. This spiral is divided by means of a chisel into small silver rings which are linked together to form a chain.

The boards are fashioned into staves with the bush knife, hoops of rattan are fitted, and finally the bottom is cut out of a board and pressed into the tub.

    Abstract: Two cotton threads are strung on a bamboo bow, the lower part of a small chicken feather the quill of which has been cut off is stuck between the two threads. The feather is wound around both threads and the top of the feather is again stuck between the two threads. The feather which has thus been fixed to the threads is pushed aside with a needle. The finished cord is dyed red and gets a multicoloured tassel of cotton threads attached to one end.

    Abstract: Ein junger Mann fällt im Wald einen Upasbaum und bringt ihn ins Dorf, entrindet und schneidet ihn zurecht. Er klopft die Bastschicht mit Hilfe zweier Holzschlegel als Schlauch von dem 1,7 m langen (11 cm Durchmesser) Stamm, dehnt sie und hängt sie zum Trocknen zwischen zwei Pfosten auf. Am folgenden Tag schneidet er den Baststoff auf. Die Matte ist 1,5 x 0,6 m groß.
    Abstract: A tree is felled with hewing-knife, a block of about 6 ft. is cut off the trunk and taken to the village. The outer layer of the bark is separated by scratching, the bast layer beaten with a wooden hammer and rolled up to form a torus. After the beating the roll is unrolled into a tubular shape and hung to dry on a pole. On the following day the tubular piece of bast is taken down and cut open.

Dann verziert er die Vorderseite durch Punzen mit geometrischen Mustern, bohrt zwei Löcher in die oberen Ecken und fügt die Platte mit einer Silberkette und einem -halsring zu einem Schmuckgehänge zusammen.

    Abstract: During the new year festivities the ceremonial ball game of the young men and the maidens is played in the village square. The partners form two lines facing each other, throw rag-balls from one line to the other, and accompany the game with recitations and songs. Nearby, the younger boys play the badmintom game, in the course of which feathered missiles of bamboo are batted to and fro with wooden raquets. In a different part of the village several boys are playing the "top-spinning game". During these games, the new year is heralded by a man shooting a flint-look musket.

    Abstract: The dance is performed around a green tree stuck in the ground. The girls dance in a double-row in an inner circle, whilst the men form a chain as the outer circle. A reed organ player and a lute player take turns in leading the dance. The dance starts in a clockwise direction, changes then, and continues in an anti-clockwise direction up to the end.

    Abstract: The cream, obtained by means of a centrifuge, is poured into a wooden churn, called a Schlacker in South Tyrol. With the help of a pounder the cream is turned into butter. According to temperature, the butter is ready in 15 - 20 minutes.

    Abstract: Eine Frau überträgt eine Zeichnung auf Pappe und sticht sie mit Stecheisen aus. Auf Stickrahmen wird das Arbeitsstück und darauf die angestochene Zeichnung befestigt. Das so vorgegebene Muster wird in der Sprengtechnik mit Goldfaden überstickt. Die fertige Stickerei (ein schwarzes Samtmieder) wird auf der Unterseite mit dem Hammer geklopft und mit Stärke gesteift.
    Abstract: A woman transfers a design to a piece of pasteboard and pricks it out with a punch. The fabric is then mounted into a frame and the pasteboard pattern on to it. The design is embroidered with gold thread in couching or laid work. The finished embroi-dery (a black velvet bodice) is beaten with a hammer on the reverse side and stiffened with starch.

    Abstract: In einer geheimgehaltenen Scheuer wird der Butz in senkrecht stehendes Stroh gehüllt; dann erhält er zwei Strohzöpfe, eine rote Schleife und eine Art Helmbusch aus bunten Papierbändern. Auf die Verhüllung werden Rosetten aufgesteckt. Nach Öffnen des Scheuertores beginnt er mit seinen beiden Führern und den Eiersammlern den Heischegang durch das Dorf. Nach dem Umgang wird die Umhüllung an der Jagst verbrannt. Brauchträger sind die Schüler der siebten Klasse. Der mit Ton versehene Teil des Films beginnt nach etwa 9 min Vorführdauer.
    Abstract: In a secret barn the "Butz" is dressed up with straw, straw plaits, a red ribbon and kind of an aigrette from coloured strips of paper. Rosettes are stuck on the mummery. Then he starts his begging procession through the village with two guides and the egg collectors. After that the mummery is burned at the river. This custom is performed by pupils of the 7th class. The first part of the film is silent, sound film starts after about 9 min.

    Abstract: Der Butz wird senkrecht mit Strohhalmen und waagerecht mit Strohzöpfen vermummt; dann erhält er einen 10-12 m langen Schwanz, einen Strohhut mit bebänderten Haselstecken, Handschuhe und eine Peitsche. Während des Heischeumgangs wird er von zwei Führern, zwei Eiersammlern und den Schülern der Oberstufe (5. bis 8. Klasse), die die Brauchträger sind, begleitet. Auf einer Wiese am Ettebach wird die Vermummung des Butzen angezündet, und er versucht, unerkannt zu verschwinden. Der mit Ton versehene Teil des Films beginnt nach etwa 7 min Vorführdauer.
    Abstract: Dressing up the "Butz" with straw and straw plaits, a long tail, a straw hat, gloves and a whip. During the begging procession he is accompanied by two guides, two egg collectors and some pupils. Later the mummery of the "Butz" is inflamed on a nearby meadow and he tries to disappear incognito.

    Abstract: Ein 13jähriger Bub wird mit Strohzöpfen eingeflochten, mit einer gelben Stofflarve verhüllt und mit Schellenriemen, Tschako, Säbel und Schwanzglocke versehen. Zusammen mit sieben Begleitern geht er von Haus zu Haus. Es werden Sprüche aufgesagt und Eier, Butter und Milch gesammelt. Am Abend des Tages verzehren die Buben gemeinsam die gesammelten Lebensmittel.

    Abstract: The "Straw-man", disguised completely in straw, plays a special role in the Leipferdingen shrovetide. First the dressing of the "Straw-man" is shown in the film. Then he is led along in the procession. On Shrove-Tuesday an imitation of the "Straw-man", a straw dummy, is burned on the market place.

    Abstract: Am Pfingstsonntag ziehen sechs Buben (Erster, Fähnrich, Alissimus, Korporal, Pfingstdreck, Korbträger) von Hof zu Hof und tragen ihre in Versen gefaßten Segenswünsche vor. Sie werden bewirtet und erhalten Geld und Eier.
    Abstract: On Whit Sunday a group of six boys go from farm to farm, reciting their rhymed wishes for a blessing. After the recitation, the boys receive the hopitality of the inhabitans. Before leaving, they are given money by the farmer, and eggs by his wife. On leaving the farm they are ragged by the children who stand at the entrance.
