Dabei bringt er so distinkte Phänomene wie kognitive Leistungsfähigkeit, Geschlechtszugehörigkeit oder Alter zusammen. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes sondieren, wie sich das Potential des Heterogenitätsbegriffs angesichts des komplexen Verhältnisses von kulturellen und religiösen Verschiedenheiten sowie aufgrund sozialer und gerechtigkeitsrelevanter Segregationen disziplinär und interdisziplinär näher bestimmen lässt - auch im Rekurs auf aktuelle Differenz- und Gleichheitsdiskurse, Identitäts- und Sozialtheorien sowie Anerkennungs- und Gerechtigkeitspädagogiken.

    Abstract: Die Europa-Idee, die in den Nachkriegsjahren wirksam war, ist heute verdunstet. Diese Idee war stark geprägt vom Christentum, dem der alte Kontinent seine geistige Einheit verdankt. Die Institutionen des Christentums sind dabei konkurrierenden Interessen ihrer Mitglieder ausgesetzt, verlieren deren Zustimmung in unterschiedlicher Weise und haben das konfliktträchtige Potential ihrer konfessionellen Vielfalt noch nicht ganz überwunden. Daneben haben sogenannte fundamentalistische Richtungen innerhalb traditioneller Weltreligionen – in Europa außer dem Christentum auch das Judentum und der Islam – regen Zulauf. Der Band hinterfragt die traditionelle Rolle religiöser Werte für die Union, ihre Transformation in der Geschichte und behandelt ihre Gegenwart und Zukunft. Letzteres tut er zum einen mit Hinblick auf die Frage nach der Zugehörigkeit des Islam zu Europa – in seiner gegenwärtigen Präsenz als auch in seinem historisch-kulturellen und philosophischen Einfluss –, zum anderen im Vergleich zwischen der (in sich noch unterschiedlichen) europäischen Konzeption des Verhältnisses von Religion und Staat und anderer westlicher Staaten, namentlich den USA

    Abstract: In Kindheit und Jugend ist eine Auseinandersetzung mit ästhetischen Darstellungs- und Wahrnehmungsweisen hochgradig relevant. Die Bedeutsamkeit ästhetischer Positionierungen - etwa durch die Wahl der Kleidung oder Accessoires, durch Make-up oder technische Geräte - kann einerseits als Anzeichen einer sehr erfolgreichen Kommerzialisierung von Kindheit und Jugend gedeutet werden. Andererseits zeugt sie aber auch von einem Gespür, mit dem sich Kinder und Jugendliche die Alltagswelt, in der sie leben, zu eigen machen. Um die sozialen Verhältnisse von Ästhetiken, Ökonomien und Generationenbeziehungen in den Blick zu nehmen, versammelt dieser interdisziplinäre Band Forschungsperspektiven zu Alltagsästhetiken in Kindheit und Jugend.

    Abstract: Modern Chinese history told from a Buddhist perspective restores the vibrant, creative role of religion in postimperial China. It shows how urban Buddhist elites jockeyed for cultural dominance in the early Republican era, how Buddhist intellectuals reckoned with science, and how Buddhist media contributed to modern print cultures. It recognizes the political importance of sacred Buddhist relics and the complex processes through which Buddhists both participated in and experienced religious suppression under Communist rule. Today, urban and rural communities alike engage with Buddhist practices to renegotiate class, gender, and kinship relations in post-Mao China. This volume vividly portrays these events and more, recasting Buddhism as a critical factor in China's twentieth-century development. Each chapter connects a moment in Buddhist history to a significant theme in Chinese history, creating new narratives of Buddhism's involvement in the emergence of urban modernity, the practice of international diplomacy, the mobilization for total war, and other transformations of state, society, and culture. Working across an extraordinary thematic range, this book reincorporates Buddhism into the formative processes and distinctive character of Chinese history.

    Abstract: Friedhöfe sind Trauerorte und langlebige Biotope des regionalen Gedächtnisses. Denn Grabmale erzählen nicht nur Familiengeschichte, sondern auch Stadtgeschichte. Die Geschichte eines Gemeinwesens ist immer auch die Geschichte von Toten und Totengedenken. Die Toten und ihre letzten Ruhestätten gehören nicht nur den Angehörigen. Im kulturellen Gedächtnis mischen sich Privates und Öffentliches, Grabstelle und öffentlicher Raum. Gedächtnis bekommt hier eine räumliche Gestalt, es kann begangen werden. Kirchen und Kommunen sind als Friedhofsträger und Erinnerungsgemeinschaften herausgefordert, diese Bedarfe in eine sinnvolle Gestalt zu überführen. In interdisziplinärer Weite werden aus sozialwissenschaftlicher, kulturwissenschaftlicher und theologischer Perspektive die sepulkral-memorialen Formen diskutiert und ausgelotet.

    Abstract: Dating back millennia, antisemitism has been called "the longest hatred." Thought to be vanquished after the horrors of the Holocaust, in recent decades it has once again become a disturbing presence in many parts of the world. Resurgent Antisemitism presents original research that elucidates the social, intellectual, and ideological roots of the "new" antisemitism and the place it has come to occupy in the public sphere. By exploring the sources, goals, and consequences of today's antisemitism and its relationship to the past, the book contributes to an understanding of this phenomenon that may help diminish its appeal and mitigate its more harmful effects.

    Abstract: Die Wende von 1989 bzw. 1991 hat die Religionsgemeinschaften in den ehemals kommunistischen Staaten Südosteuropas auf die Bühne der politischen Öffentlichkeit zurückgebracht. Sie wurden aufgewertet, aber nicht unbedingt in spiritueller, sondern in institutioneller, politischer und nationaler Hinsicht. Heute, zwei Jahrzehnte nach der Wende, erheben die Religionsgemeinschaften Südosteuropas häufig den Führungsanspruch in der Gesellschaft – nicht nur in religiöser und moralischer, sondern auch in national-politischer Hinsicht. Bei ihren Versuchen, die Gesellschaft zu sakralisieren, profanisieren sie sich jedoch häufig selbst. Mit diesen Phänomenen befassen sich die in diesem Band enthaltenen Beiträge, die in Form von Referaten im Rahmen der vom 16. bis 18.     Abstract: Anti-Jewish sentiment and prejudice are not a fringe-group phenomenon. In recent years the inhibition threshold for expressing anti-Semitic content in public has become lower, with Israel often serving as a screen for projecting anti-Jewish sentiment. This anti-Semitism of the mainstream of society was the focus of an interdisciplinary symposium in 2009 at Friedrich Schiller University Jena. The book contains the conference contributions, in which eminent experts on anti-Semitism such as Wolfgang Benz, Jehuda Reinharz and Martin Kloke analyse the phenomenon.

    Abstract: This book takes into view a large variety of Muslim actors who, in recent years, made their entry into the European public sphere. Without excluding the phenomenon of terrorists, it maps the whole field of Muslim visibility. The nine contributions present unpublished ethnographic materials that have been collected between 2003 and 2005. They track down the available space that is open to Muslims in EU member states claiming a visibility of their own. The volume collects male and female, secular and religious, radical and pietistic voices of sometimes very young people. They all speak about »being a Muslim in Europe« and the meaning of »real Islam«

    Abstract: 'Culture' and 'meaning' are central to anthropology, but anthropologists do not agree on what they are. Claudia Strauss and Naomi Quinn propose a new theory of cultural meaning, one that gives priority to the way people's experiences are internalized. Drawing on 'connectionist' or 'neural network' models as well as other psychological theories, they argue that cultural meanings are not fixed or limited to static groups, but neither are they constantly revised and contested. Their approach is illustrated by original research on understandings of marriage and ideas of success in the United States

    Abstract: During the 1920s much attention was paid to the history of Jews in Germany since the Enlightenment and the subject became popular again, with renewed emphasis, after 1945. Many historians were deeply committed to understanding and explaining the tragic path that led from the emancipation of the Jews to the Holocaust. For a long time, much less work was done on the history of Jews in Germany in earlier periods, particularly the period between the late Middle Ages and the Enlightenment. This book is the first comprehensive account of Jewish-Gentile relations in central Europe from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. It lays particular emphasis on cultural, economic, social, and political issues, and incorporates much new research

    Abstract: A full understanding of human action requires an understanding of what motivates people to do what they do. For too many years studies of motivation and of culture have drawn from different theoretical paradigms. Typically, human motivation has been modelled on animal behaviour, while culture has been described as pure knowledge or symbol. The result has been insufficient appreciation of the role of culture in human motivation and a truncated view of culture as disembodied knowledge. In this volume, anthropologists have attempted a different approach, seeking to integrate knowledge, desire, and action in a single explanatory framework. This research builds upon recent work in cognitive anthropology on cultural models, that is, shared cognitive schemas through which human realities are constructed and interpreted, while also drawing upon insights from developmental psychology, psychoanalytic theory, and social theory. Most of the research described here was conducted in the United States and deals with some of the pressing concerns - romance, marriage, parenthood, and success - of women and men from different class and ethnic backgrounds. A study of gender roles in Mexico provides comparative cross-cultural data. Several of the chapters deal with oppressive social ideologies, exploring cultural models of gender and class. The careful, in-depth case studies and innovative methods of discourse analysis used here turn up findings about the relation of ideology to people's thought and action that challenge any kind of simple social determinism

    Abstract: Sociologists generally study macrolevel institutions and social processes with little reference to the individual. Psychologists, on the other hand, tend to study individual-level processes with little reference to society. This volume, featuring contributions from influential scholars in US social psychology, brings the link between the individual and society into focus. The chapters in the volume are distinguished by their concentration on either cognitive, affective or behavioural processes. These analyses eschew the traditional psychological approach to individual-level processes and instead offer intriguing accounts of how thought, emotion and action are embedded in social context and are central to the dynamic between self and society.     Abstract: In the observational study of social systems, the major conceptual innovation of the last century was General Systems Theory. Yet the General Systems Theory conceptions of interacting social systems were doomed to remain at the prescientific level of metaphor until a set of statistical techniques were developed and applied. These techniques have come to be known as sequential analysis. Sequential analysis has as its first objective the detection of recurring sequential patterns in a stream of coding categories describing social interaction. These techniques can be employed to study the repertoires of individuals
