    Abstract: Im letzten Jahrzehnt der DDR fanden Punk und seine experimentellen Verästelungen in Post-Punk, New Wave, Elektronischer Musik und Avantgarde-Rock und -Pop auch in dem stillen Land ihre Hörer. Wer hörte, wollte oft aber auch mehr: "Magnetizdat DDR" erzählt, wie aus Konsumenten schnell Produzenten wurden und DDR-weit eine sich selbst verlegende Kassettentäter-Szene entstand, der Magnetbanduntergrund. Ein Magnetizdat, in Ableitung von Samizdat und Tamizdat in der sowjetischen Gegenkultur. Hier wie dort, in Ost wie West, war dabei Multimedialität das Gebot der Stunde. Literaten ließen sich von Bands befeuern, Musiker entdeckten Barock- und Experimental-Lyrik, Super-8-Filmer und bildende Künstler griffen zum Mikrofon, international renommierte Projekte nahmen hier ihren Anfang.

    Abstract: "Despite the widespread consensus that China's digital revolution was sure to bring about massive democratic reforms, such changes have not come to pass. While scholars and policy-makers alternate between predicting change and disparaging a stubbornly authoritarian regime, in this book, Shaohua Guo argues that this dichotomy misses the far more complex reality. "The Evolution of the Chinese Internet" traces the emergence and maturation of one of the most creative digital cultures in the world, through four major technological platforms that have marked trends in internet use over the past two decades: the bulletin board system, the blog, the microblog, and WeChat. Guo transcends typical narratives, structured around the binaries of freedom and control, to argue that Chinese internet culture displays a uniquely sophisticated interplay between multiple extremes, and that its vibrancy is dependent on these complex negotiations. In contrast to the flourishing of research findings on what is made invisible online, this book examines the driving mechanisms that grant visibility to particular kinds of user-generated content, offering a systematic account of how and why an ingenious Internet culture has been able to flourish. Guo highlights the pivotal roles that media institutions, technological platforms, and creative practices of Chinese netizens have played in shaping culture on- and offline"--

    Abstract: "In Dear Science and Other Stories Katherine McKittrick presents a creative and rigorous study of black and anticolonial methodologies. Drawing on black studies, studies of race, cultural geography, and black feminism as well as a mix of methods, citational practices, and theoretical frameworks, she positions black storytelling and stories as strategies of invention and collaboration. She analyzes a number of texts from intellectuals and artists ranging from Sylvia Wynter to the electronica band Drexciya to explore how narratives of imprecision and relationality interrupt knowledge systems that seek to observe, index, know, and discipline blackness. Throughout McKittrick offers curiosity, wonder, citations, numbers, playlists, friendship, poetry, inquiry, song, grooves, and anticolonial chronologies as interdisciplinary codes that entwine with the academic form.     Abstract: This book explores how news media construct social issues and events and thereby convey certain perceptions within the scope of framing theory. By operationalizing media framing as a process of interpretation through defining problem, diagnosing causes, making moral judgments and suggesting solutions, the book proposes a systematic and transparent approach to images in news discourse. Based on a frame analysis, it examines how German news media framed a list of China-related issues and events, and thereby conveyed particular beliefs and opinions on this country. Moreover, it investigates whether there were dominant patterns of interpretation and the extent to which diverse views were evident by comparing two major daily newspapers with opposite political orientations - the FAZ and the taz. Motivated by the relationship between image and reality, the book explores image formation and persistence from media construction of meaning and human cognitive complexity in perceiving others. Media select certain issues and events and then interpret them from particular perspectives. A variety of professional and non-professional factors behind news making may result in biased representations. In addition, from a social psychological perspective, inaccurate perceptions of foreign cultures may arise from categorical thinking, biased processing of stimulus information, intergroup conflicts of interest and in-group favoritism. Accordingly, whether media coverage deviates from reality is not the main concern of this book; instead, it emphasizes the underlying logics upon which the conclusions and judgments were drawn. It therefore contributes to a rational understanding of Western discourse and holds practical implications for both Chinese public diplomacy and a more constructive role of news media in promoting the understanding of others

    Abstract: "Race and Cultural Practice in Popular Culture is an innovative work in which contributors freshly approach the concept of race as a social factor made concrete in popular forms, such as film, television, and music. They collectively push past the reaffirmation of static conceptions of identity, authenticity, or conventional interpretations of stereotypes and bridge the intertextual gap between theories of community enactment and cultural representation. The book also draws together and melds otherwise isolated academic theories and methodologies (case studies, critical readings, and ethnographies, for example) in order to focus on race as an ideological reality and a process that continues to impact lives despite allegations that we live in a post-racial America. The collection is separated into three parts: Visualizing Race (Representational Media), Sounding Race (Soundscape), and Racialization in Place (Theory), each of which takes into account visual, audio, and geographic sites of racial representations respectively. Popular culture forms examined include TV shows such as Orange is the New Black and Breaking Bad, artists such as Shakira and Nicki Minaj, and more"--

    Abstract: Seit dem 18. Jahrhundert erlebt die Institution Museum einen unvergleichlichen Aufschwung, der in den vergangenen Jahren insbesondere in Europa und in China zu einer Gründungswelle und einer Neukonzeption etablierter Einrichtungen geführt hat. Zugleich entwickelte sich die Expositorik zu einer eigenen Disziplin. Begriff und Phänomen des Kulturerbes bilden eine scheinbar gegenläufige Bewegung zwischen lokalen, regionalen und nationalen Bezügen einerseits und globalen, das gesamte Erbe der Menschheit repräsentierenden Stätten andererseits. Es deutet sich darin eine neue Kulturentwicklung an, die mit dem Etikett der Glokalisierung belegt ist. Der Band beleuchtet die komplexen Entwicklungen und Theorien aus verschiedenen Perspektiven und anhand von aktuellen Fallbeispielen.

    Abstract: Das Radio erlebt in den letzten Jahren ein Comeback in den Kultur- und Geisteswissenschaften. Eine zentrale Fragestellung ist hierbei die identitäts- und kulturpolitische Nutzung von Klängen und Musik im Radio. Diesem Thema widmen sich die Beiträger_innen aus verschiedenen kulturwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen und knüpfen dabei an die aktuellen Forschungen zur sinnlichen Dimension der Alltagswelt an. Sie fragen nach Akteuren und Praktiken, Interessen und Diskursen sowie nach den institutionellen und gesellschaftlichen Kontexten im Zusammenhang mit Rundfunk und klingendem Kulturgut.

    Abstract: The Other Digital China: Nonconfrontational Activism on the Social Web maps out the emerging ecosystem of Chinese activism 2.0 that traverses multiple sectors-the NGO sector, universities, the corporate sector, and the IT sector-where change agents are creating social good in non-contentious ways and engaged in constructing the new "social" under difficult ideological constraints. Focusing on social media and tech practices emerging from China's social sector in recent years, this book provides a multifaceted look at the Chinese society caught at a transformative moment, thanks in part to the arrival of Web 2.0 technology and the accompanying cyber utopianism, as well as the Communist Party's recently alleged commitment to policies aimed at energizing the hitherto weak social structure. Wang develops the idea of "nonconfrontational activism" and argues that it's possible to talk about the agency of "change-makers" even in authoritarian countries.--

    Abstract: Die Volksrepublik China entwickelte sich zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts zu einer weltweit führenden Wirtschaftsmacht. Die so entstandene globale Mobilität führte zu einem soziokulturellen Wandel innerhalb des Landes. Kommunikation, Kultur und Werte sind in diesem Prozess eng miteinander verbunden. Thomas Herdin setzt sich in seiner Habilitationsschrift für eine dynamische Werteauffassung ein. Die Grundlage von Kultur ist für ihn nicht an Territorien festzumachen, sondern an gemeinsamen Werten, Lebensformen und Deutungsmustern. Diese unterliegen einem ständigen Wandel und stellen somit keine feststehenden Einheiten dar. Kulturelle Gegensätze seien vereinbar wie bei dem taoistischen Yin-Yang-Symbol. Am Beispiel Chinas möchte er die klassische Denkweise, eine Gesellschaft sei entweder kollektivistisch oder individualistisch, durch das "Sowohl-als-auch-Schema" aufbrechen. Dabei will er eine westliche Verzerrung verhindern, indem er auch chinesische Ansätze und Modelle der Kommunikationswissenschaften miteinbezieht. Herdin beschreibt in seinem Werk verschiedene Deutungsmuster transkultureller Phänomene wie zum Beispiel das Lächeln. So wird dieses unter europäisch Sozialisierten meist als ein Ausdruck von Freude verstanden, in China werde allerdings auch in anderen Situationen, etwa bei Trauer, gelächelt. Im empirischen Teil seines Buches analysiert Herdin aktuelle Wertehaltungen und kulturelle Transformationsprozesse in China. Grundlage hierfür bilden Aussagen leitender Angestellter sowie Studierender in Peking und Shanghai. Es ist Herdin ein Anliegen, den Eurozentrismus in Frage zu stellen und das westliche Wissenschaftsverständnis kritisch zu reflektieren. (ifa)

    Abstract: Internet usage in China has recently grown exponentially, rising from 59 million users in 2002 to 710 million by mid-2016. One in every two Chinese has currently been exposed to the Internet. This upsurge has made political communication among citizens and between the government and citizens less costly and almost instantaneous in China. Despite these advances, scholars are only beginning to understand and systematically explain the ways in which increased Internet exposure may affect behavior and values of Chinese netizens. Can the Internet help liberalize Chinese society due to its innate pluralism? Has the Internet become an efficient tool assisting the ruling elite to remain in power given the tendency of Internet service providers and users to be easily manipulated by the Chinese state? This book addresses these questions by focusing on the most digitally embedded segment of Chinese population – university students. Using survey evidence from more than 1200 observations, data confirm that Internet exposure to information generated by fellow netizens promotes democratic orientation, enhances political resistance to indoctrination, and boosts popular nationalism. However, exposure to government-managed websites encourages regime support and, at a less significance level, decreases democratic orientation, and elevates official patriotism. People who perceive the Internet as a tool enhancing the vertical communication between the Chinese government and netizens tend to become patriotic and supportive of the regime. Building upon quantitative evidence, this book draws a nuanced picture of Internet exposure and its political implications

    Abstract: Music, Sound and Space is the first collection to integrate research from musicology and sound studies on music and sound as they mediate everyday life. Music and sound exert an inescapable influence on the contemporary world, from the ubiquity of MP3 players to the controversial use of sound as an instrument of torture. In this book, leading scholars explore the spatialisation of music and sound, their capacity to engender modes of publicness and privacy, their constitution of subjectivity, and the politics of sound and space.     Abstract: "Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian is the most ambitious photographic and ethnographic record of Native American cultures ever produced. Published between 1907 and 1930 as a series of twenty volumes and portfolios, the work contains more than two thousand photographs intended to document the traditional culture of every Native American tribe west of the Mississippi. Many critics have claimed that Curtis's images present Native peoples as a "vanishing race," hiding both their engagement with modernity and the history of colonial violence. But in this major reappraisal of Curtis's work, Shamoon Zamir argues instead that Curtis's photography engages meaningfully with the crisis of culture and selfhood brought on by the dramatic transformations of Native societies. This crisis is captured profoundly, and with remarkable empathy, in Curtis's images of the human face. Zamir also contends that we can fully understand this achievement only if we think of Curtis's Native subjects as coauthors of his project.     Abstract: The flourishing of photography as a medium in the mid-19th century coincided with a rise in curiosity about China on the part of the Western world. As the number of foreigners living and traveling in China increased, early photographs of China were taken by and for an international audience. Among the Celestials assembles 250 fascinating images of China in the second half of the 19th century and first half of the 20th, captured by the Western camera lens.     Abstract: Initially branching out of the European contradance tradition the danzón first emerged as a distinct form of music and dance among black performers in 19th-century Cuba. By the early 20th-century, it had exploded in popularity throughout the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean basin. This book studies the emergence hemisphere-wide influence, and historical and contemporary significance of this phenomenon of music and dance.
