Aber auch wenig bekannte, zu ihrer Zeit und in ihrem Bereich jedoch nachhaltig wirkende Persönlichkeiten sowie Außenseiter, denen die Sexualwissenschaft wichtige Impulse verdankt, sind im vorliegenden Lexikon zu finden - ebenso bekannte Philosophen und Soziologen wie etwa Michel Foucault, Norbert Elias oder Niklas Luhmann. Ein besonderes Anliegen ist den Herausgebern die Erschließung des Werkes jener jüdischen Sexualwissenschaftler, die der Naziterror aus Deutschland vertrieben hat. Es gibt kein vergleichbares Werk weltweit. Volkmar Sigusch, Arzt und Soziologe, ist einer der angesehensten Sexualwissenschaftler der Gegenwart. Er hatte bis zu seiner Emeritierung den Frankfurter Lehrstuhl für Sexualwissenschaft inne und gründete das gleichnamige Institut. Günter Grau, Medizinhistoriker, arbeitete an den medizinhistorischen Instituten der Universität Leipzig und der Charité Berlin sowie am Institut für empirische und angewandte Soziologie der Universität Bremen.

    Abstract: Repräsentative empirische Studien über Ausländer sind selten. Vor diesem Hintergrund liefert die Untersuchung von Claudio Caballero auf Basis der Mainzer Ausländerstudie mit fast 1800 Befragten wertvolle Erkenntnisse über Integrationsformen und grundlegende politische Einstellungen von in Deutschland lebenden Ausländern. Die Befürwortung demokratischer Prinzipien sowie die Akzeptanz politischer Institutionen und Akteure konstituieren die Unterstützung des politischen Systems. Der Autor zeigt, dass ein zwar differenzierter, aber dennoch klar positiver Zusammenhang zwischen gesellschaftlicher Integration und politischer Unterstützung besteht. Hier aufgewachsene Ausländer können prinzipiell einen ähnlichen Sozialisationsprozess wie deutsche Staatsbürger durchlaufen, was die Herausbildung eines vergleichbaren, systemstabilisierenden Sets an Grundeinstellungen wahrscheinlich werden lässt. Hingegen können Ausländer als Folge von Integrationsdefiziten negative Einstellungen gegenüber dem politischen System aufweisen. Der Integrationsförderung kommt insofern eine entscheidende Bedeutung zu, als sie langfristig zur Entwicklung von politischer Unterstützung und somit zur Stabilisierung des politischen Systems beiträgt.

    Abstract: Wie ist die Situation von Migranten in Deutschland? Bleiben sie ewig Fremde in der Fremde oder werden sie zu gleichwertigen und akzeptierten Mitgliedern der Gesellschaft? Das Buch beleuchtet den Zustrom ausländischer Mitbürger und verfolgt ihre Integration in die Gesellschaft und den Arbeitsmarkt bis zum Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts. Nach den großen Flüchtlingsströmen am Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges schwappt Mitte der 50er Jahre mit den ersten Gastarbeitern eine weitere Migrationswelle nach Deutschland, in den 70er Jahren folgen politische Flüchtlinge und Asylanten. Günter Kühn geht in der Folge auf das Zuwanderungsgesetz von 2005 ein, beschreibt Versuche der gesellschaftlichen Integration von Migranten und stellt Förderangebote vor, die die berufliche Qualifizierung unterstützen. Ein besonderer Augenmerk liegt dabei auf der Sprachvermittlung, in Verbindung mit beruflichen Bildungsmaßnahmen. Biographische Informationen Günter Kühn, ehemaliger wissenschaftlicher Direktor beim Bundesinstitut für Berufsbildung, ist als ehrenamtlicher Berater für Sozial- und Bildungsprojekte tätig.

    Abstract: Wat houdt een samenleving bijeen? Gemeenschappelijke waarden en normen worden meestal aangewezen als het antwoord op de pregnante vraag naar de binding (of sociale cohesie) van de samenleving. Toch is de auteur van deze nieuwe verzameling sociologische essays niet tevreden met dit standaardantwoord. De vraag moet immers gesteld worden wat een samenleving bijeen houdt als gemeenschappelijke waarden niet of niet meer aanwezig zijn en de samenleving verscheurd dreigt te worden door felle groepsconflicten en scherpe wij-zij-tegenstellingen. In die situaties heeft een samenleving, net als een grote kathedraal, een aantal steunberen nodig om niet volledig in te storten. In de loop van de geschiedenis zijn die steunberen inderdaad ontwikkeld: een eerlijk rechtsproces, religieuze tolerantie, het zoeken naar wetenschappelijke waarheid en tenslotte niet-gewelddadige conflictbeslechting. Een samenleving heeft deze historisch ontwikkelde sociale instituties hard nodig om met vele tegengestelde groepsbelangen en religieuze verschillen om te gaan zonder tot sociale wanorde of destructie te vervallen. Deze sociale instituties geven 'tegenkracht' tegen te veel en te weinig sociale binding. Vanuit dit perspectief zijn de hier overzichtelijk bijeengebrachte essays geschreven en hier voor het eerst bijeengebracht

    Abstract: Intending Scotland reconsiders our understanding of the development of Scottish culture from the Enlightenment to the present day. The book recovers and reconnects Scottish thinkers from Hume and Reid in the eighteenth century, to Andrew Seth, Norman Kemp Smith and John Macmurray in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It contextualises their work in relation to the development of Scottish anthropology and psychology, from which emerged, in the work of Ian Suttie and R. D. Laing, some of the most significant challenges to Freudian psychology. Craig uses this Scottish tradition to challenge theories of the nation over the last thirty years, providing critiques of Bhabha's 'hybridity' and of Anderson's 'imagined community', and of theories of 'the Other' within a postcolonial framework. Ranging over Scotland's intellectual and cultural history across three centuries, taking in gardens and gardeners as well as historians and historiographers, scientists and engineers as well as philosophers and psychologists, Intending Scotland presents a reinterpretation of Scottish cultural life as radical as the developments in the nation's contemporary politics. Key debates addressed in Intending Scotland include: *Challenges negative conceptions of the Scottish cultural past and of the failures of Scotland's cultural development *Sets Scotland's recent political development in the context of its cultural achievements in the twentieth century *Deals with major figures in Scottish culture - Hume, Reid - and shows how our modern understanding of them is dependent on the work of later Scottish thinkers *Engages with prominent critics in contemporary theory - Anderson, Derrida, Bhabha, Kearney - and develops a critique of them from a Scottish perspective.

    Abstract: "Speed, the sensation one gets when driving fast, was described by Aldous Huxley as the single new pleasure invented by modernity. The Speed Handbook is a virtuoso exploration of Huxley's claim. Enda Duffy shows how the experience of speed has always been political and how it has affected nearly all aspects of modern culture. Primarily a result of the mass-produced automobile, the experience of speed became the quintessential way for individuals to experience modernity, to feel modernity in their bones. Duffy plunges full-throttle into speed's 'adrenaline aesthetics', offering deft readings of works ranging from F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, through J.G. Ballard's Crash, to the cautionary consumerism of Ralph Nader. He describes how speed changed understandings of space, distance, chance, and violence; how the experience of speed was commodified in the dawning era of mass consumption; and how society was incited to abhor slowness and desire speed. He examines how people were trained by new media such as the cinema to see, hear, and sense speed, and how speed, demanded of the efficient assembly-line worker, was given back to that worker as the chief thrill of leisure.     Abstract: This book explores a virtually untapped, yet fascinating research area: television dialogue. It reports on a study comparing the language of the American situation comedy Friends to natural conversation. Transcripts of the television show and the American English conversation portion of the Longman Grammar Corpus provide the data for this corpus-based investigation, which combines Douglas Biber's multidimensional methodology with a frequency-based analysis of close to 100 linguistic features. As a natural offshoot of the research design, this study offers a comprehensive description of the most common linguistic features characterizing natural conversation. Illustrated with numerous dialogue extracts from Friends and conversation, topics such as vague, emotional, and informal language are discussed. This book will be an important resource not only for researchers and students specializing in discourse analysis, register variation, and corpus linguistics, but also anyone interested in conversational language and television dialogue.

    Abstract: Während Systeme aufgrund ihrer Selbstreferenzialität über klare Grenzen verfügen, wird in der Netzwerkforschung noch kontrovers über den Status von Netzwerkgrenzen diskutiert. Als dynamische, mit Zentren und Peripherien ausgestattete, heterogene Gebilde können sich Netzwerke nicht über ihre Grenzen definieren, sondern durch das, was in ihren Aktivitätszentren passiert. Der Sammelband stellt die aktuelle Debatte vor und präsentiert die dabei bezogenen Standpunkte, wonach Netzwerke gar keine oder zumindest unscharfe Grenzen besitzen, diese zunächst narrativ durch die Akteure erzeugt werden und lediglich forschungspraktische Artefakte bilden, so dass Netzwerke selbst als Grenzen aufzufassen sind. Diese Debatte schärft das Selbstverständnis der Netzwerkforschung erheblich und unterstreicht gleichzeitig die Eigenständigkeit netzwerkforscherischer Ansätze für das Verständnis aktueller gesellschaftlicher Entwicklungen (z.B. „next society"). Der Sammelband enthält sowohl theoretische als auch empirische Zugänge zu dem Thema.

    Abstract: Warum stört sich beim Fußball eigentlich niemand daran, wenn Franz Beckenbauer über die „angeborene Geschmeidigkeit der Afrikaner" sinniert? Warum finden wir die Existenz von Ausländerregelungen in der Bundesliga so selbstverständlich? Und weshalb ist die Vorstellung so abwegig, dass Frauen und Männer gemeinsam Fußball spielen? In jedem anderen Funktionssystem wären derartige partikularistische Diskriminierungen hochgradig legitimationspflichtig. Nur im Fußball bzw. im Sport werden nationale, ethnische sowie geschlechtliche Zuschreibungen unhinterfragt akzeptiert. Wieso aber gelten Ausländerbeschränkungen und Geschlechtersegregation nicht als Widerspruch zum sportlichen Leistungsprinzip und dem Inklusionspostulat funktional differenzierter Gesellschaften? Diese Fragen werden in der vorliegenden Arbeit anhand einer historischen Analyse des Fußballsports und ethnografischer Untersuchungen in drei Bundesligaklubs beantwortet.

    Abstract: The juxtaposition of biopolitical critique and animal studies-two subjects seldom theorized together-signals the double-edged intervention of Animal Capital. Nicole Shukin pursues a resolutely materialist engagement with the "question of the animal," challenging the philosophical idealism that has dogged the question by tracing how the politics of capital and of animal life impinge on one another in market cultures of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
