    Kurzfassung: Detroit’s shrinking size has resulted in an overabundance of single-family homes in this single-family home metropolis. On the one hand, the abandoned houses have led to Detroit being declared bankrupt, while on the other hand, it has paved the way for other ways of working and living with and using houses and vacant lots that may not make an immediate profit on the real estate market and may be considered “unreal” estate (Herscher, 2012), but that keep people together as a neighborhood and community. This thesis looks at the circumstances in which residents become homeowners and how as homeowners, artists and immigrants ascribe value to single-family homes and how they make place with their homes in a neighborhood context. The focus is on homeowners’ everyday practices that determine the value of single-family homes when the latter is not considered use value or economic value in a real estate market, but recognized as a social and cultural value.

    Kurzfassung: Kennen Sie die Geheimsprache der Pariser Metzger? Stéphane Hardys kulturhistorische, lexikologische und soziolinguistische Darstellung des largonji du louchébem gewährt exklusive Einblicke in die verborgene Welt einer ganz besonderen Sprechergruppe. Der fast ausschließlich in der gesprochenen Form verwendete louchébem ist eine „verhüllende Sondersprache“. Für Außenstehende ist er nicht verständlich und soll es auch nicht sein. In der Fachliteratur galt der louchébem als nahezu ausgestorben. So hat diese Thematik in der (franko-)romanistischen Sprachwissenschaft bisher nur wenig Beachtung gefunden. Doch der largonji du louchébem ist sehr lebendig. Das weist die Autorin mit ihrer qualitativ-empirischen Studie auf der Basis umfangreichen authentischen Gesprächsmaterials nach.

    Kurzfassung: This book is an in depth, extensive study of Romanian queer cultural products and brings an essential and very needed contribution to the literature on Central and SEE gender studies, post-communism studies, media, and cultural studies, while at the same time being very relevant for transnational queer studies.The book looks at Romanian queer culture ”from inside”, and also from the acknowledgment that the research process is guided by the sensitivity of the approached topics, by the lack of archival footprints, and by a solid dose of media archaeology, especially when looking at the beginning of Romanian LGBT+ activism in the 90s. The book starts from contemporary Romanian cultural products that are either focusing on queer topics or (and sometimes both) produced by queer creators. It looks back at the memories of seminal queer and trans activists in extensive interviews conducted for this volume, and fragmented literary and media sources that cover the most part of the 20th century. Ramona Dima is a researcher in queer and gender studies with focus on South East Europe. Her publications and topics of interests include queer culture, sexuality and migration, LGBT+ activism, and anti-gender politics. She is the recipient of a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship hosted by the Centre for Gender Studies, University of Stavanger (2021-2023). Dr. Dima holds a PhD from the University of Bucharest and is the initiator and co-organiser of Queer and Feminist Studies in Southeastern Europe International Conference.

    Kurzfassung: This book offers new research on urban policy innovations that promote the application of blue-green infrastructure in managing water resources sustainably. The author argues that urban water managers have traditionally relied on grey infrastructural solutions to mitigate risks with numerous economic and environmental consequences.     Kurzfassung: "Placed in the wider scope of post-war European decolonisation migrations, The Retornados from the Portuguese Colonies in Africa looks at the "Return" of the Portuguese nationals living in the African colonies when they became independent. Using an interdisciplinary research agenda, the book presents a collection of research essays written by experts in the fields of anthropology, history, literature and the arts, that look at a wide range of memory narratives through which the Return-as well as the experiences of war, violence, loss and trauma-have been expressed, contested and internalised in the social realm. These narratives include testimonial accounts from the so-called retornados from Africa and their descendants, as well as works of fiction and public memory-novels, television series, artworks, films or social media-that have come to mediate the public understanding of this past. Through the dialogue between these different narrative modes, this book intends to explore the interplay between official memory, the lived experience and fiction, thus contributing to build an empirical basis to critically discuss the memory of the end of the Portuguese empire within postcolonial Europe. This book will be of great interest to postgraduates, researchers and academics, most notably the ones working in the fields of postcolonial studies, cultural studies and memory studies"--

But that does not mean that such people did not exist. In nineteenth-century France, case studies filled medical journals, high-profile trials captured headlines, and doctors staked their reputations on sex determinations only to have them later reversed by colleagues. While medical experts fought over what separated a man from a woman, novelists began to explore debates about binary sex and describe the experiences of gender-ambiguous characters.     Kurzfassung: A heritage language is the term given to a language spoken at home by bilingual children of immigrant parents. Die von renommierten Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaftlerinnen und -wissenschaftlern vorgelegten Einzelinterpretationen stellen speziell für deutsche Leserinnen und Leser rund zwanzig markante narrative Werke aus zwei Jahrzehnten vor.     Kurzfassung: Martha Marisa Wanat (*17.11.1989) ist politische Unternehmerin, Sängerin und geschäftsführende Gesellschafterin der „Gesellschaft für urbane Mobilität BICICLI“ sowie der Mobilitätsberatung „MOND – Mobility New Designs“. Das Unternehmen wurde u.a. mit dem Deutschen Fahrradpreis, dem Future Mobility Award des Tagesspiegels und dem Innovationspreis des Deutschen Handels ausgezeichnet. Sie studierte Wirtschafts-, Politik- und Kulturwissenschaften an der Zeppelin Universität. Durch die Zusammenarbeit im Rahmen der Initiative »Stadtmanufaktur Berlin«, eines transdisziplinären Forschungsformats zwischen Wissenschaft und Praxis zur Lösung von komplexen urbanen Herausforderungen, ist sie eng mit der Technischen Universität Berlin verbunden. Zudem ist sie Nachhaltigkeitsbotschafterin und politische Beraterin des »Netzwerks Unternehmensverantwortung« der IHK Berlin und engagiert sie sich bei der Graswurzelbewegung »Brand New Bundestag« für eine neue Generation progressiver Politiker:innen im deutschen Bundestag. Stephan A. Jansen (*12. Juni 1971) ist Stiftungsgastprofessor für Urbane Innovation – Mobilität, Gesundheit und Digitalisierung – an der Universität der Künste Berlin und Leiter des »Center for Philanthropy & Civil Society« an der Karlshochschule in Karlsruhe. Er ist Gründungskoordinator des mit der Charité und den Berliner Universitäten gegründeten »Digital Urban Center for Health & Aging (DUCAH)« am »Alexander von Humboldt-Institut für Internet & Gesellschaft«. Zahlreiche Mandate der wissenschaftlichen Beratung in den vergangenen Legislaturen, u.a. »Innovationsdialoges« der Bundeskanzlerin, Mitglied der »Forschungsunion« der Bundesregierung oder bei Vizekanzler a.D. Peer Steinbrück. Gründungspräsident der Zeppelin Universität und seit 1999 Gastforscher an der Stanford University. Autor von über 300 Publikationen sowie beim Wirtschaftsmagazin »brand eins«.     Kurzfassung: Das Fahrrad ist das langlebigste und weitest verbreite Fahrzeug der Welt, von dem in seiner zweihundertjährigen Geschichte mehr als eine Milliarde Exemplare gebaut wurden. Dennoch wurde seine Technikgeschichte bisher vernachlässigt, obwohl es mit seiner Idee des Leichtbaus anstelle der tonnenschweren Eisenbahn und der Abkehr vom Pferd neue Konstruktionen, Materialien und Fertigungstechniken ins Leben rief, welche die Basis für Motorrad-, Automobil- und Flugzeugbau bildeten. Erst seit dreißig Jahren haben eine internationale Konferenz und die mikrohistorische Feinarbeit der nationalen Vintage-Vereine quellenbasierte Erkenntnisse gesammelt, die einen neuen Blick auf die Fahrradgeschichte ermöglichen. Dieses Buch bietet erstmals eine länderübergreifende und umfassende Darstellung der technischen und historischen Entwicklung des Fahrrads von den frühesten Laufmaschinen als Reitpferdersatz bis hin zu modernen Rennrädern, Mountainbikes und Liegerädern. Es zeichnet die Entwicklung des Fahrrads auch anhand der einzelnen Komponenten wie Antrieben, Schaltungen, Federungen, Bremsen, Lichtanlagen, Speichenrädern und Luftreifen nach, die von Erfindern und Herstellern hinsichtlich Material, Ergonomie und Fahrphysik zuwege gebracht wurden.     Kurzfassung: La sociedad globalizada se caracteriza cada vez más por los cruces de fronteras no solo geopolíticas sino también simbólicas, culturales, identitarias, lingüísticas o disciplinarias. Cruces de fronteras son también los procesos de negociación cultural y transculturación en las intersecciones de categorías nacionales, sociales, culturales e identitarias de género, clase, orientación sexual, raza y etnia. Este volumen responde a la crisis actual del hispanismo, reflejada en la obsolescencia de los rígidos modelos filológicos, el canon de las literaturas nacionales y el legado de las ideologías posimperiales, ineficaces para estudiar la diversidad social y cultural, la hibridación y la poscolonialidad en el nuevo contexto global. La cultura española contemporánea no se puede entender plenamente sin considerar sus encrucijadas globales y sus fantasmas poscoloniales. El poshispanismo propone una redefinición de los parámetros de los estudios hispánicos para responder a esta compleja realidad, ampliando los marcos y metodologías de los estudios culturales ibéricos y abriéndose hacia perspectivas transatlánticas y transpacíficas. La presente investigación examina estas encrucijadas reales y simbólicas de las prácticas culturales y representaciones literarias y visuales en el ámbito poshispánico, en el marco de los siglos XX y XXI.

    Kurzfassung: El libro presenta once trabajos sobre un debate historiográfico, el estudio de cómo se construyeron y asimilaron las diferencias humanas y culturales. Aunque concede una atención especial a América hasta el siglo XIX, integra otros espacios relacionados con la España colonial como Filipinas o Marruecos. La percepción del otro, comenzando por quién designa y es designado como otro, no es un tema nuevo en la historiografía, pero sigue vigente por su capacidad de integrar las visiones de dominadores y dominados, por su metodología interdisciplinar (representada en el libro por la colaboración de historiadores, historiadores del arte o antropólogos) y por la naturaleza universal de algunas de sus conclusiones, las cuales permiten relacionarlo con el presente. En resumen, una propuesta amplia e integradora que interroga al pasado sobre un tema definitorio del ser humano y que, por eso, nunca deja de ser actual. Quizás, si comprendemos los fenómenos de identidad y alteridad como construcciones culturales, podamos favorecer la formación de sociedades más respetuosas y pacíficas

    Kurzfassung: Der Fokus dieses Buches liegt auf der Rolle von Hauptstadtgestaltung und Architektur und deren Verhältnis zur politischen Ordnung, insbesondere der Demokratie. Im Mittelpunkt steht die These, dass sich aufgrund der abstrakten und kollektiven Natur des Souveräns im demokratischen Staat keine eindeutige Formensprache an der Staatsarchitektur „demokratischer Hauptstädte“ ablesen lässt.     Kurzfassung: Decadent Orientalisms presents a sustained critique of the ways Orientalism and decadence have formed a joint discursive mode of the imperial imagination. Attentive to historical and literary configurations of language, race, religion, and power, Fieni shows the importance of understanding Western discourses of Eastern decline and obsolescence together with Arab and Islamic responses in which the language of decadence returns as a characteristic of the West.Taking seriously Edward Said’s claim that Orientalism is a "style of having power," Fieni works historically through the aesthetic and ideological effects of Orientalist style, showing how it is at once comparative, descriptive, and performative. Orientalism, the book argues, relies upon decadence as the figure through which its positivist scientific claims become redistributed as speech acts—"truths" that establish dominance. Rather than attending to Orientalism as a repertoire of clichés and stereotypes, Decadent Orientalisms considers the systemic epistemological consequences of the diffuse, yet coherent network of institutions that have constituted Orientalism’s power

    Kurzfassung: Angesichts vielfältiger urbaner Krisen wird die kooperative Entwicklung von Stadträumen immer bedeutender. Wie diese gelingen kann, zeigt Michael Ziehl am Beispiel der Sanierung des historischen Gängeviertels in Hamburg. Als Aktivist und Forschender eröffnet er tiefe Einblicke in die ungewöhnlich enge Zusammenarbeit von engagierten Bürger*innen mit Politik und Verwaltung. Dabei erfasst er Rahmenbedingungen, Konflikte sowie Anpassungsmaßnahmen der Kooperation. Den Stadtraum als Reallabor begreifend, gibt er konkrete Handlungsanregungen, wie Resilienz koproduziert werden kann. Damit bietet er zukunftsweisendes Praxiswissen an, um eine nachhaltige Transformation von Städten voranzutreiben und die Anpassungsfähigkeit urbaner Systeme zu erhöhen
    Kurzfassung: In view of a wide range of urban crises, the cooperative development of urban spaces is increasing in importance. How to succeed in this is shown by Michael Ziehl, based on the example of the renewal of the historical Gängeviertel in Hamburg. As an activist and researcher, he opens up deep insights into the unusually close cooperation between involved citizens, politics and administration. He presents the framework conditions, conflicts and adaptation measures of the cooperation. Understanding urban space as a real-world laboratory, he provides concrete suggestions for action as to how resilience can be coproduced. He offers future-oriented practical knowledge for driving the sustainable transformation of cities forwards and raising the adaptability of urban systems

Mit einer interdisziplinären Herangehensweise arbeitet das Handbuch verschiedene Problematisierungen von Menschen und Maschinen, die gerade heute virulent sind, historisch und systematisch auf. Dabei steht die klassische anthropologische Frage nach dem "Menschen" in den jeweiligen Ausprägungen und Wandlungen mit Blick auf Technik im Zentrum. Diese Betrachtung geht nicht von einem einzigartigen, unveränderlichen Wesen des Menschen aus, sondern untersucht die historischen Veränderungen des Menschen durch und mit Technik. Gerade im Zeichen neuer Technologien wie der Digitalisierung und Künstlicher Intelligenz-Forschung steht das Mensch-Maschinen-Verhältnis erneut auf der Agenda.     Kurzfassung: This handbook provides an overview of approaches to, and methods and topics on a historical anthropology of technology. This includes basic concepts, the variety of human technical concepts, technicised practices and the technicisation of senses and skills. Furthermore, it presents important representatives of an anthropology of technology since the early modern period. With its interdisciplinary approach, this volume historically and systematically approaches various problems relating to humans and machines that are currently being debated. At the centre of attention is the quintessential anthropological question of what a ‘human being’ is with respect to technology. However, this consideration does not derive from the concept of a unique, unchanging essence of man, but examines the historical changes of man through and with technology. Particularly in light of new technologies such as digitisation and artificial intelligence research, the relationship between humans and machines is once again on the agenda, in which humans and humanity seem to be the subject of discussion

    Kurzfassung: The Building as Screen: A History, Theory, and Practice of Massive Media describes, historicizes, theorizes, and creatively deploys massive media - a set of techno-social assemblages and practices that include large outdoor projections, programmable architectural façades, and urban screens -- in order to better understand their critical and creative potential. Massive media is named as such not only because of the size and subsequent visibility of this phenomenon but also for its characteristic networks and interactive screen and cinema-like qualities. Examples include the programmable lighting of the Empire State Building and the interactive projections of Montreal's Quartier des spectacles, as well as a number of works created by the author himself. This book argues that massive media enables and necessitates the development of new practices of expanded cinema, public data visualization, and installation art and curation that blend the logics of urban space, monumentality, and the public sphere with the aesthetics and affordances of digital information and the moving image.

    Kurzfassung: Die etwa 2.000 Klein- und Mittelstädte in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland sind ein wichtiger Bestandteil unseres Siedlungsnetzes. In ihnen lebt etwa die Hälfte der Einwohner des Landes. Zentrale Herausforderungen der Stadterneuerung in ihnen, wie der Strukturwandel in Handel und Gewerbe, der Verfall überkommener historischer Substanz, die Zunahme von Leerständen und Problemimmobilien und die allgemein sinkende Vitalität, werden häufig nicht aktiv genug bearbeitet. Vielerorts gibt es zwar sehr aktive Bürger*innen, die sich in Vereinen und informellen zivilgesellschaftlichen Netzwerken organisieren und intensiv in die Stadtentwicklung einbezogen werden wollen, doch Perspektivlosigkeit, Überalterung und Nachwuchsmangel und der Mangel an Ressourcen begrenzen oft ihre Möglichkeiten deutlich. Obwohl in den einzelnen Kommunen ein großer Wissens- und Erfahrungsschatz über neue Verfahren und Instrumente der Stadterneuerung vorhanden ist, sind gute Beispiele aus Klein- und Mittelstädten häufig wenig bekannt und wurden bisher nur in Ansätzen wissenschaftlich untersucht. Hier setzt der vorliegende Band mit seinem inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt auf der Situation der Stadterneuerung in Klein- und Mittelstädten an. Neben eher grundsätzlichen Beiträgen widmet er sich auch Erfahrungen aus der Praxis in ganz unterschiedlichen Förderkontexten. Die Herausgebenden Dr.-Ing. Uwe Altrock ist Professor für Stadterneuerung und Planungstheorie an der Universität Kassel. Dr.-Ing. Detlef Kurth ist Professor für Stadtplanung an der TU Kaiserslautern. Dr.-Ing. Ronald Kunze ist Fachautor für Städtebau, Stadtentwicklung, Stadterneuerung und Wohnungspolitik. Dr.-Ing. Holger Schmidt ist Professor für Stadtumbau und Ortserneuerung an der TU Kaiserslautern.     Kurzfassung: Dejan Petkov explores the tramway renaissance in Western Europe from a socio-technical standpoint and focuses on the development in Germany, France, and England. A multiple case analysis reveals the drivers, impact forces, actors and interest constellations behind the tramway renaissance in these countries and demonstrates the large variations in local systems and their style. A key finding is that there can be quite different paths to the success of tramway systems, but this success usually comes at a cost and can have a comprehensive character only if the systems are considered an integral part of the overarching strategies and concepts for urban and regional development. Unterhaltungskulturen in ländlichen Gegenden, die Freizeitgestaltung dort beheimateter Jugendlichen sowie das Zusammenspiel von Ruralität und fortschreitender Modernisierung stießen in der Populärkulturforschung bislang auf eher geringes Interesse. Die Studie möchte diese Forschungslücke schließen und auf Grundlage von Archivstudien sowie Zeitzeugeninterviews Impulse für die empirische Erforschung populärer Orte geben.

    Kurzfassung: Water is a global resource for modern societies - and water was a global resource for pre-modern societies. The many different water systems serving processes of urbanisation and urban life in ancient times and the Middle Ages have hardly been researched until now. The numerous contributions to this volume pose questions such as what the basic cultural significance of water was, the power of water, in the town and for the town, from different points of view. Symbolic, aesthetic, and cult aspects are taken up, as is the role of water in politics, society, and economy, in daily life, but also in processes of urban planning or in urban neighbourhoods. Not least, the dangers of polluted water or of flooding presented a challenge to urban society. The contributions in this volume draw attention to the complex, manifold relations between water and human beings. This collection presents the results of an international conference in Kiel in 2018. It is directed towards both scholars in ancient and mediaeval studies and all those interested in the diversity of water systems in urban space in ancient and mediaeval times.     
    Kurzfassung: Wasser ist eine globale Ressource für heutige Gesellschaften – Wasser war eine globale Ressource vormoderner Gesellschaften. Die manigfaltigen unterschiedlicher Wassersysteme für Prozesse der Urbanisierung und das urbane Leben in der Antike und dem Mittelalter ist bislang kaum erforscht. Die zahlreichen Beiträge dieses Bandes fragen nach der grundlegenden kulturellen Bedeutung von Wasser ( bzw. power of water) in der Stadt und Wasser für die Stadt aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven. Symbolische, ästhetische oder kultische Aspekte werden ebenso thematisiert wie die Rolle von Wasser in Politik, Gesellschaft oder Wirtschaft und dem alltäglichen Handeln, aber auch in Stadtplanungsprozessen oder städtischen Teilräumen. Nicht zuletzt stellen die Gefahren von verschmutzten Wasser oder Überschwemmungen die städtische Gesellschaft vor Herausforderungen. Die Beiträge diesen Band lenken den Blick auf die komplexen und vielfältigen Beziehungen zwischen Wasser und Menschen. Das Sammelwerk präsentiert die Ergebnisse einer internationalen Tagung in Kiel 2018. Es wendet sich gleichermaßen an Leser aus den altertumskundlichen wie mediävistischen Fächern und darüberhinaus an alle Interessierten, die sich über die Vielfalt von Wassersystemen im Stadtraum der Antike und des Mittelalters informieren möchten

Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in a pioneering research project in Germany, he argues we can make sense of technological visions only if we simultaneously grasp the role of care, gender, and narrative in sustaining technological research.
