Abstract: The first book in the series provides the concept of a theoretical redefinition of 'horizontal geographies'. These denote the spatial syntheses as undertaken in various disciplines, whether as regional studies, area studies, new regional geography, and many more. The basis of the redescription is philosophical neopragmatism, which has occasionally been taken up in the spatial sciences, but has never been differentiated into a theory-driven empirical research program. This development of the research program guides the present book. Philosophical neopragmatism, especially as conceptualized by Richard Rorty, focuses in particular on contingency of society, self, and language, which also allows spatial syntheses to be understood not as 'images of reality' but as contingent proposals for redescribing spaces. As a result of the complexity of spatial processes, their horizontal geographic study requires a triangulation of theories, methods, researcher perspectives, data, and the involvement of people without expert special knowledge. To highlight the contingency of the spatial syntheses, the presentation of the results - —here especially graphic and cartographic - —resorts to the attitude of irony. Regarding the six levels of trigangulation, neopragmatism acts as a meta-theoretical orientation framework. Against the background of the complexity of spatial developments on the one hand and to operationalize Rorty's principle of private self-creation and public solidarity on the other hand, Ralf Dahrendorf's concept of life chances is drawn upon. Especially in the differentiation of this concept made in this book, it serves on the one hand for an understanding access of the (also spatial) expression of options and ligatures,, and on the other hand it offers a normative framework for the evaluation of socio-spatial developments. The reference to neopragmatic studies on spatial syntheses conducted to date and evaluated in this book shows the potential of the approach elaborated here in conceptual detail for the first time. .

Abstract: In the face of great challenges, utopian thinking is currently in vogue. The fact that utopias, with their ideas of an idealized target society, are not compatible with the basic features of an Open Society was already pointed out by Karl Popper in his book 'Die Offene Gesellschaft und ihre Feinde' (The Open Society and its Enemies) under the impression of National Socialism and Stalinism. In the present book, further forms of Closed Societies and the principal similarities (and differences) of their construction are examined. This is done by drawing on Ralf Dahrendorf's concept of life chances, in which he deals with the interaction of options and ligatures. The ambivalence of Dahrendorf's understanding of ligatures, since they restrict options on the one hand, but also give them meaning on the other, is resolved by a threefold differentiation: into ethical and moral, internally and externally directed, and explicit and implicit ligatures. While the former are capable of enabling life chances, the latter tend to limit them. Based on this, the authors elaborate on the landscape (side) consequences of different Closed Societies and how ill-suited they are for dealing with current challenges. Dr. Karsten Berr is a research associate in the research group on Urban and Regional Development at the University of Tübingen. Abstract: Since the mid-1990s, the term 'foodscapes' has been used. Its reference to landscape opens it up to a wide theoretical variety and numerous methodological approaches. Through the large 'semantic yard' of the concept of landscape it becomes clear that the approach of foodscapes aims less at the description or pure positivistic analysis of the production, distribution and consumption of food, but is rather open to aesthetic approaches, normative questions, aspects of the connection of food and space with meaning. In this respect, research on foodscapes is not simply a part of food geography but reaches beyond it. With this anthology we contribute to the development of the research field on foodscapes and combine diverse perspectives from different disciplines, locations and theoretical as well as methodological backgrounds on the diversity of what foodscapes can be. Our anthology 'Foodscapes - Theory, History, and Current European Examples' is the result of the collaboration of lecturers and students from the universities of Bucharest, Madrid, Rome and Tübingen. Abstract: A neopragmatic theoretical framing and its operationalization -- The multiple causes of coastal land loss in Louisiana - an overview -- Land loss and life chances -- The loss of land in mass media representation -- Terrestrial marine hybrids on the Louisiana coast - a phenomenological acces -- Conclusion.
Abstract: This book is oriented on testing and developing the neopragmatic approach of horizontal geographies, in which we follow approaches of natural sciences, social sciences, and cultural studies. Regional focus is thereby put on a rapidly changing elemental space and its social representations, characterized by unstable and not well-defined hybridities: coastal Louisiana. This region is highly dynamic: the Mississippi River in particular, with its extensive sediments, has shifted the coastal fringe of present-day Louisiana into the Gulf of Mexico. This land gain is contrasted by natural processes, but also by processes resultant of human intervention which cause marine encroachment. A complex interplay of different aspects is directly and indirectly leading to coastal land loss which makes the question of how to describe emerging hybrid spaces virulent and highlights the limits of a positivist understanding of boundaries that is also physically geographical. In the neopragmatic tradition, positivist research findings will be framed in social constructivist terms and supplemented by phenomenological approaches to Louisiana's coastal space, thus suggesting the need for and potentials of horizontal geographic integration of different theoretical and methodological approaches as well as researcher perspectives and data bases. Abstract: Angesichts großer Herausforderungen hat utopistisches Denken aktuell Konjunktur. Abstract: Gone are the days when fathers were expected to put work first and family last. Today, men worldwide are redefining fatherhood and finding greater fulfillment both at work and at home. But old ways die hard. Many managers prefer the status quo, and fathers aren't finding the support and flexibility they need from their employers. Dads still feel pressure to downplay or hide their involvement in their children's lives. And even as more men step up as parents, across every level of society the burdens of parenting and running a household still fall unfairly on women. Fatherhood is one of the toughest jobs and the biggest responsibility you'll ever take on. Advice for Working Dads will teach you how to balance and integrate work and parenthood, how to navigate the common pitfalls at work, and how to find success when you're taking on twice as much-for the good of your family. This volume will help you: navigate workplaces and bosses that want you to forget you're a parent; spend your time at work and at home more purposefully; make time for yourself, your friends, and your hobbies; set reasonable expectations and limits in the always-on work culture; communicate better with your spouse or partner about careers, parenting, and housework; get the paternal leave you and your family need; set your family up for success; and more.

Abstract: Create loyal, engaged, and results-focused teams and organizations using a practical five-part servant leadership formula. Think of a world where people go to work completely engaged, are inspired to do more than they ever thought possible, remain 100% loyal to the teams and organizations they belong to, are achieving mind-blowing results, and gladly and even passionately follow their leader's direction. Is that a world you want to be a part of? The reality is, you really can! In his work with hundreds of leaders and teams, Michael Rogers has created a practical approach to leadership that works. It is the Care to Lead Leader. Care to Lead Leaders are different than most leaders. Most leaders talk of caring with their lips but are far from actually leading with their hearts. Care to Lead Leaders lead from their heart. They understand that leading from the heart wins the hearts of those they lead, which makes leading more purposeful and a lot easier. After listening to this book, you'll have the tools to apply practical servant leadership approaches that create buy-in into bigger visions, improve loyalty and engagement, and move your teams and organizations to unprecedented levels of action.

Abstract: PRAISE FOR THE CONFLICT RESOLUTION TOOLBOX SECOND EDITION "I have been using and recommending The Conflict Resolution Toolbox since its first edition. It is rare to find a resource with such practical tools in a field that is so concrete, but often struggles to bridge theory and practice. In this increasingly complex world, it is vital to have models to resort to when we reach impasse in conflict. I recommend The Conflict Resolution Toolbox to anyone engaged in resolving conflicts in any discipline." —Martha E. Simmons, JD, LLM, PHD, Academic Director, Winkler Institute of Dispute Resolution and Director, Mediation Clinic and Intensive Program, Toronto, Canada "We all know one thing about conflict: It is messy! Furlong's models offer mediators, facilitators, lawyers, psychotherapists and others 'a leg up' in more swiftly figuring out what is going on and what is needed. Furlong does not offer up a single 'truth', style or theory, so much as a collection of effective tools that professionals, groups and families can use to better understand what they are experiencing and how they can approach achieving better results. Highly recommended!" —James C. Melamed, JD, CEO, Mediate.com "Gary Furlong has done it again! A long-time leader in the conflict resolution field, Gary has added two new 'power tools' to what was already the essential conflict resolution toolkit. His new chapters in this Second Edition deal with 'The Law of Reciprocity' and 'Loss Aversion Bias'. I am proud and thankful to add this book to my already growing conflict resolution bookcase, knowing that this is a volume I will go to again and again. I highly recommend it for anyone in the field." —Rick Weiler, Mediator, Arbitrator, Weiler ADR Inc., Ottawa, Canada "Gary Furlong uniquely provides invaluable, practical tools that help in understanding, preventing, and resolving conflict. This is a must-have reference book for anyone who cares about mitigating the role destructive conflict plays in our professional and personal lives and finding strategic benefit in tools that work. Gary has created a book that is both aspirational and practical. It's so challenging to create simple-to-use tools supported by complex concepts and Gary does this better than anyone." —Joshua A. Gordon, JD, MA, Arbitrator for the Court of Arbitration of Sport, Senior Practitioner at the Sports Conflict Institute, and Woodard Family Foundation Fellow Senior Instructor of Sports Business at the University o...
Abstract: "Since the first edition of this book was published in 2005, technological and scholarly advances have made significant contributions to our understanding of how we communicate and engage with each other. This Second Edition recognizes the important research done over the last 15 years in the fields of neuroscience, neuropsychology, and behavioural economics with two new models that look at the deeper patterns and biases our million-year-old brains use to connect and make decisions. It also recognizes the value that the tools in the first edition brought to practitioners everywhere, retaining and refining the models that have been recognized as powerful and useful tools in resolving conflict between people. The technology we all use to communicate may have changed, but human nature and our experience of conflict is still very much with us. Imagine for a moment that you are faced with a conflict. Imagine, for example, that your new neighbour loves to have guests over many nights of the week until the early hours of the morning, keeping you up with the noise. When you talk to your neighbour, he laughs and tells you, "Loosen up, have some fun. Come and join us if you want! You need to enjoy life more!" You go home after the conversation and get increasingly angry. You think about how insensitive he is, how little he cares for other people. You begin to think that he may actually be retaliating for the fact that your dog barks every now and then, which he complained about once. Given how you see the problem, you vow to call the police the next time he has a party during the week. This conflict is headed for a significant escalation. We are all faced with conflict situations in many aspects of our lives, whether in our personal life, in the workplace, or with just about anyone we meet. Given how common conflict situations are and how frequently we deal with conflict, you would think that we'd all be pretty good at handling conflict and building, or re-building, relationships"--

Abstract: The capital of Louisiana, Baton Rouge, has been the scene of fundamental changes in recent decades. In the context of the tripole of petrochemistry, Louisiana State University (LSU) and public administration (especially of the state of Louisiana), which has been fully developed since the end of the 1920s, general processes (such as the transition from modern to post-modern spatial development) mix with specific local and regional characteristics and logics, also in dealing with spaces (such as the eccentric location of the downtown area, the limited influence of spatial planning). The result is a social-spatial formation of a 'multivillage metropolis'. The investigation of this 'multivillage metropolis' follows a neopragmatic approach that triangulates different theories, methods, data and researcher perspectives. The Authors Dr. Dr. Olaf Kühne is professor for urban and regional development at the University of Tübingen. Dr. Corinna Jenal is a research assistant in the research area of urban and regional development at the University of Tübingen. Abstract: The understanding of landscape in the German-speaking area has some similarities with the discussions of the topic in other European languages and scientific communities, but there are some specifics. These specifics can be found both in the common sense understanding of landscape and in the history of scientific conceptualization. Special features of the common sense understanding lie on the one hand in the medieval roots, a strong romantic charge and the strong connection between home and landscape. With regard to the scientific examination of landscape, there are specific fractions and discontinuities in the German-speaking world. Contents • Theoretical Framing: the Creation of Landscape • The Genesis of the Landscape Concept in the German Language Regions – the Common Sense Understanding • The Concept of Landscape in Landscape-Related Sciences • Landscape Research in its Interdisciplinary and Transdisciplinary Challenge About the Authors Dr. Karsten Berr works as a research assistant at the Department for Urban and Regional Development at the Eberhard Karls University Tübingen.
