    Abstract: "Does media history really start with a bang? More than just newspapers, television, and social networks, media are best understood as the means by which any information is communicated, from cosmic radiation traces to medieval church bells to modern identity documents. Cultures are held together as much by bookkeeping and records as they are by stories and myths. From Big Bang to Big Data is a long history of the media--how it has been established, used, and transformed from the beginning of recorded time until the present. It is not primarily a story of revolutions and innovations, but of continuities and overlaps that reveal surprising patterns across history. Many media were invented as ways to store and share information, and many have served as powerful tools for administration and control. The concerns raised about media today, whether about privacy, piracy, or anxieties over declining cultural standards, preoccupied earlier generations too.     Abstract: "A Woman's Empire explores a new dimension of Russian imperialism: women actively engaged in the process of late imperial expansion. The book investigates how women writers, travellers, and scientists who journeyed to and beyond Central Asia participated in Russia's "civilizing" and colonizing mission, utilizing newly found educational opportunities while navigating powerful discourses of femininity as well as male-dominated science. Katya Hokanson shows how these Russian women resisted domestic roles in a variety of ways. The women writers include a governor general's wife, a fiction writer who lived in Turkestan, and a famous Theosophist, among others. They make clear the perspectives of the ruling class and outline the special role of women as describers and recorders of information about local women, and as builders of "civilized" colonial Russian society with its attendant performances and social events. Although the bulk of their writings, drawings, and photography is primarily noteworthy for its cultural and historical value, A Woman's Empire demonstrates how they also add dimension and detail to the story of Russian imperial expansion and illuminates how women encountered, imagined, and depicted Russia's imperial Other during this period."--

    Abstract: Erstmals werden in Berlin hochrangige Kunstwerke der vorislamischen Epochen aus Museen und Instituten Usbekistans präsentiert. Sie führen in eine weitgehend unbekannte Welt. Seitdem Alexander der Große im 4. Jahrhundert v. Chr. auf seinem beispiellosen Kriegszug auch in die zentralasiatischen Gebiete vordrang, gelangten hellenistische Einflüsse in diese Region. Mit der Einwanderung nomadischer Reiterstämme aus China entwickelte sich eine Bau- und Kunstsprache, die östliche und westliche Elemente in besonderer Art und Weise verband. Diese Verbindung künstlerischer Traditionen des Hellenismus mit Einflüssen aus Indien und den Traditionen der Steppenvölker erlebte im Reich der Kuschan vom 1. bis ins 3. Jahrhundert n. Chr. ihre Blütezeit. So entstand in den Palästen, den großen Städten und den buddhistischen Klöstern eine einzigartige Bilderwelt. Unter den Lehmhügeln der verfallenen Gebäude überdauerten deren Zeugnisse bis zu ihrer Wiederentdeckung die Stürme der Zeit. Toffa entwickelt eine neue epistemische Lesart der deutschen Missions- und Kolonialgeschichte in Togo. Anhand der Missionskonzeption des Missionsinspektors Franz Michael Zahn wirft er einen diskursanalytischen Blick auf die unterschiedlichen Ordnungen, Entscheidungen und persönlichen Überlegungen. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auf den daraus abzuleitenden Werten und Normen.     Abstract: Postkoloniale Perspektiven im Kunstbetrieb und in der Kulturellen Bildung haben Hochkonjunktur. Doch werden diese Konzepte meist genutzt, ohne dass eine tiefergreifende Auseinandersetzung mit ihnen stattfindet. Dabei wären umfassendere Debatten um und mit Theorien des Postkolonialismus dringend notwendig, etwa, um die Zumutungen der dominanten eurozentrischen Ausstellungs- und Vermittlungspraxen aufzudecken. Die Beiträge des Bandes beleuchten die Verantwortung der Kunst und Kunstvermittlung aus einer explizit postkolonialen Perspektive. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf dem »double bind«, der das Feld durchzieht und sich äußert in einer dilemmatischen Position zwischen Subversion und Affirmation. Dabei werden sowohl diskriminierende Praxen im Feld entlarvt als auch eine (auto-)kritische Theorieentwicklung vorangetrieben.

    Abstract: "From 1995 to 2007, researchers from China and the United States conducted a systematic, full-coverage regional archaeological survey in southeastern Shandong Province, China, covering an area of more than 1,400 square kilometers. This pioneering multiyear international project transformed the archaeological understanding of regional settlement patterns from the Neolithic to the Han period in southeastern Shandong. As an update of the 2012 synthesis published in Chinese, this volume is the most detailed account of the project in English. The team discovered many new sites, including the earliest known Neolithic settlements in the area, and revealed distinctly different regional settlement patterns in the hinterlands of the two largest late Neolithic sites, Liangchengzhen and Yaowangcheng. The book includes field procedures, methods of analysis, and descriptions of major sites generously illustrated with maps as well as photographs of key artifacts and archaeological localities"--

    Abstract: Die Vergangenheit ist unbeobachtbar. Was wir von ihr wissen oder uns vorstellen, haben wir nicht zuletzt durch Bilder erfahren: Historiengemälde, Fotografien, Filme, digitale Reanimationen. Der Kunsthistoriker Peter Geimer fragt, was Bilder zu visuellen Zeugnissen macht und wie sie Geschichte Gestalt verleihen. Dabei zeigt sich, dass Bilder nicht einfach historische Sachverhalte illustrieren, sondern selbst Erscheinungsformen der Geschichte sind. Obwohl Sprache traditionell als Leitmedium des Historischen gilt, beruht unsere Vorstellung des Vergangenen maßgeblich auch auf Bildern. Wie Schriftquellen, so rekonstruieren Bilder Geschichte aber nur bruchstückhaft - sie bilden Fragmente auf der Suche nach der verlorenen Zeit. Das vorliegende Buch stellt vielfältige Erscheinungsweisen visueller Rekonstruktion in den Medien Malerei, Fotografie und Film vor. Die Zusammenschau zeigt, dass diese diversen Formen der Vergegenwärtigung - vom detailgenau rekonstruierenden Historienbild des 19. Jahrhunderts über das dokumentarische Foto bis zum "reenactment" im zeitgenössischen Video - sehr unterschiedliche Möglichkeiten der Imagination des Vergangenen darstellen. Ein neuer Blick auf die Rekonstruktion von Geschichte im Bild Peter Geimer zeigt, wie Bilder zu visuellen Zeugnissen werden

    Abstract: Die Frage der Restitution geraubter und enteigneter Kulturgüter ist nicht neu, es handelt sich vielmehr um eine Frage, die unweigerlich mit allen Kriegen in der Menschheitsgeschichte und den damit einhergehenden wechselnden Herrschafts- und Besitzverhältnissen verknüpft ist - und über die sich Intellektuelle und Autoren aller Zeiten und Kulturen den Kopf zerbrochen haben. Schon der antike Geschichtsschreiber Polybios tritt vehement gegen die Zurschaustellung erbeuteter griechischer Kunst in Rom auf, Cicero stellt die Frage, ob die Ankäufe eines sizilianischen Statthalters ohne Zwang vonstattengegangen seien. Auch Petrarca und Goethe haben zu dieser Frage Stellung bezogen, ebenso wie Victor Hugo und Emil Nolde. Bis hinein in die Gegenwart, über Aimé Césaire und François Mitterrand zu Aminata Traoré reichen die rund sechzig Quellen, die in diesem Band abgedruckt, kontextualisiert und analysiert werden. Sie machen deutlich: Europas Kunstsammlungen müssen sich der Frage der Provenienz stellen, wenn sie weiterhin als Stätten des Kulturtransfers und der Wissensvermittlung gelten wollen - und nicht als Orte der hegemonialen Machtdemonstration.

    Abstract: Schon vor 50 Jahren kämpfte Afrika um seine Kunst, die während der Kolonialzeit massenweise in europäische Museen gelangt war. Und es fand durchaus Unterstützung im Westen. Am Ende jedoch war der Kampf nicht nur vergebens, er wurde auch erfolgreich vergessen gemacht. Auf der Grundlage von unzähligen unbekannten Quellen aus Europa und Afrika erzählt Bénédicte Savoy die gespenstische Geschichte einer verpassten Chance, einer Niederlage, die heute mit umso größerer Wucht auf uns zurückschlägt. Afrikas Bemühungen um seine in der Kolonialzeit nach Europa verbrachte Kunst sind keineswegs neu. Schon bald nach 1960, als 18 ehemalige Kolonien die Unabhängigkeit erlangten, wurde von afrikanischen Intellektuellen, Politikern und Museumsleuten eine ungeheure Dynamik in Gang gesetzt. In ganz Europa suchten daraufhin Politikerinnen und Politiker, Journalisten, Akademiker und einige Museumsleute einen Weg, afrikanische Kulturgüter im Sinne einer postkolonialen und postrassistischen Solidarität zurückzugeben. Die Argumente aber, mit denen andere versuchten, die Forderungen aus Afrika zu entkräften und Lösungen zu verhindern, ähneln auf frappierende Weise denen von heute. Schließlich verlief alles im Sand. „Gebt koloniale Raubkunst zurück! Dafür engagiert sich Bénédicte Savoy. In ihrem Buch zeigt die Kunsthistorikerin nun, dass ihr Kampf ein alter ist. Schon in den 1960er-Jahren drängten die neu gegründeten Staaten Afrikas auf eine Rückführung – erfolglos. In 1943, members of the elite Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) were forced to evacuate to the 'backwater' province of Sichuan, landing at the West China Union University campus in Chengdu. As part of an extraordinary mass migration of students and professors to Free China during the Japanese occupation, the refugee PUMC was hosted by the Canadian West China Mission for the next three years. Nursing Shifts in Sichuan traces the tumultuous final days of twentieth-century relations between China and the West. The PUMC had been so successful in its attempts to develop a Chinese nursing elite that alumnae held most of the key nursing positions in the country. While under evacuation, PUMC transformed nursing at the Canadian mission, initiating the second university program in China. Both programs were closed by the new Communist government in 1951; degree programs lay dormant for the next thirty-five years. In the contemporary era of exponential increases in East-West educational exchanges, Sonya Grypma offers both a cautionary tale about the fragility of transnational relations and a testament to the resilience of educated women."--

    Abstract: The Period of Yuan dynasty (1279-1368 AD) is an important historic time for both the cultural and material exchange of China and the West Asia, and the ceramic industry of Jingdezhen city. During that period, along with its absorption of outside craftsmanship and culture, Jingdezhen's ceramic technology and products reached their peak and thus founded a solid base for the birth and development of the brilliant blue-and-white porcelains. 0From Nov. 2012 through Dec. 2015, in order to cope with the infrastructural development of Jingdezhen city, the author worked as the executive director of an archaeological team for the excavation project of Luomaqiao ancient kiln site in the township area. Consequently, a great number of ceramic industry remains and tons of porcelain shards, dating from the Northern Song dynasty (960-1127 AD) through the Late Qing dynasty(1636-1911 AD), were found at the site. Among them, the Yuan blue-and-white pieces are of the most valuable ones in terms of arts and stories.0On the basis of an academic review of the kiln sites and porcelain products of Jingdezhen in the Yuan dynasty, the book mainly covers the following works. 0First of all, in a matter of archaeological typology and with full illustrations, this book introduces all the categories and typical samples of the Yuan blue-and-white porcelains found at the Luomaqiao site.0Secondly, with the application and analysis of a large-scale of statistical data and scientific tests on the unearthed wares, the book contributes a reliable and detailed database for further studies on the product structure, firing method and decoration techniques of the Yuan blue-and-white porcelains.0Lastly, combined together with literature and archaeological findings on other sites, the book explored the origin, material, manufacturing period, product structure, and markets of Yuan blue-and-white porcelains, and furthermore the system of Yuan official kilns

    Abstract: Tijdens de koloniale slavernij zijn miljoenen mensen gereduceerd tot het bezit van een ander. Van slechts een deel van alle betrokkenen zijn hun levensverhalen te achterhalen. Het Rijksmuseum stelt in een tentoonstelling tien historische personen centraal, bekende en minder bekende. Met deze persoonlijke blik wil het museum de slavernij van gezichten voorzien en de universele, tijdloze relevantie van deze geschiedenis invoelbaar maken. Hoe moeten we ons het harde leven voorstellen van een man in slavernij op een plantage in Brazilië in de zeventiende eeuw? Of het luxe leven van een Nederlandse slavenhandelaar in diezelfde tijd? Of dat van een vrouw die kans zag de plantage te ontvluchten? In deze rijk geïllustreerde publicatie worden de levens van tien personen beschreven die deel uitmaakten van de Nederlandse koloniale slavernijgeschiedenis en die centraal staan in de tentoonstelling Slavernij in het Rijksmuseum. We maken onder anderen kennis met de Afrikaanse João Mina die op een suikerplantage in Braziliëwerkte, met Jonas Witsen, eigenaar van een plantage in Suriname, Untung Surapati, die zich aan slavernij ontworstelde en in Indonesië een nationale held werd, en met de illustere One-Tété Lokhay, die een inspiratiebron was voor de mensen die het slavernijsysteem op Sint Maarten tot stilstand brachten. Door hun verhalen krijgt de geschiedenis reliëf en krijgen we beter zicht op het systeem van slavernij, de ervaring ervan, en hoe mensen toen dachten over vrijheid. In het slotessay wordt de balans opgemaakt: waar staan we anno 2020 in onze omgang met het koloniale slavernijverleden? De tentoonstelling concentreert zich op de Nederlandse betrokkenheid bij slavenhandel en slavernij. De Nederlandse koloniale periode staat centraal, van de 17de tot en met de 19de eeuw, zowel in de driehoek Nederland-Afrika-Amerika, als in de landen rondom de Indische Oceaan waar de VOC actief was.

    Abstract: "What did a woman who lived and worked under slavery know about her ‘owner’ in the Dutch Republic? What did an owner of a sugar factory in Amsterdam know about the circumstances under which the sugar he processed was grown? And what did a freedom fighter on Curaçao know about the struggle for equal civil rights in Europe? Under Dutch rule during the colonial era, more than a million men, women and children from Asia and Africa were enslaved and shipped to the other side of the world. Very little is known about their lives. Using a variety of sources, Slavery provides a portrait of ten people from this period: people who suffered under the slavery system, people who rose in resistance against it and people who profited from it.     Abstract: In 'Transcending Patterns: Silk Road Cultural and Artistic Interactions through Central Asian Textiles', Mariachiara Gasparini investigates the origin and effects of a textile-mediated visual culture that developed at the heart of the Silk Road between the seventh and fourteenth centuries. Through the analysis of the Turfan Textile Collection in the Museum of Asian Art in Berlin and more than a thousand textiles held in collections worldwide, Gasparini discloses and reconstructs the rich cultural entanglements along the Silk Road, between the coming of Islam and the rise of the Mongol Empire, from the Tarim to Mediterranean Basin. Exploring in detail the iconographic transfer between different agents and different media from Central Asian caves to South Italian churches, the author depicts and describes the movement and exchange of portable objects such as sculpture, wall painting, and silk fragments across the Asian continent and across the ages

Alexander von Humboldt (1769-18­59) was one of the most influential scientists and thinkers of his age. A Prussian-born geographer, naturalist, explorer, and illustrator, he was a prolific writer whose books graced the shelves of American artists, scientists, philosophers, and politicians. Humboldt visited the United States for six weeks in 1804, engaging in a lively exchange of ideas with such figures as Thomas Jefferson and the painter Charles Willson Peale. It was perhaps the most consequential visit by a European traveler in the young nation's history, one that helped to shape an emerging American identity grounded in the natural world.     Abstract: "Teotihuacan was a city of major importance in the Americas between 1 and 550 CE. As one of only two cities in the New World over one hundred thousand resident inhabitants, it developed a far-reaching network of influence that stretched across Mesoamerica. The size of its urban core, the scale of its monumental architecture, and the unique nature of its apartment compounds makes Teotihuacan unique among Mesoamerica's other urban state societies. Teotihuacan, the World Beyond the City brings together specialists in art and archaeology to develop a synthetic overview of the urban, political, economic, and religious organization of the city in Classic-period Mesoamerica. It provides the first comparative discussion of Teotihuacan interaction with the Central Mexican Highlands, Oaxaca, Veracruz, and the Maya Lowlands and Highlands.     Abstract: "The proposed book takes one phenomenon, the reinvention of the idea of Central Europe in the mid-1980s, and demonstrates how its proponents developed a transnational set of practices connecting political-cultural journals with other media, disseminating this idea simultaneously in East and West. I use a range of new approaches and methodologies, including visualization of text corpora and mapping techniques, in order to reposition the political-cultural journal as one central node of a much larger cultural system. There is more at stake here than simply documenting the intellectual history of dissidents from this region in the late 1970s and 1980s, or the cultural politics that developed in their wake. By unearthing the legacy of Cold War-era border-crossing networks in the post-89 period, I show how the use of transnational, web-based media alongside of radio and print media follows the logic and practice of an earlier, 'dissident' generation of writers. Anyone who has followed the chain of electoral and economic challenges that the former satellite countries have faced over the last twenty years might ask what has happened to the liberal humanist philosophy that the term 'Central Europe' once evoked? This book follows its trajectories forward into the present day, reading both its material and intellectual traces in the post-socialist landscape"...Provided by publisher

    Abstract: "This book focuses on those peoples of the Caucasus and Central Asia, who were making the streets of the Soviet Union's "two capitals" their own. Hundreds of thousands of Uzbeks, Tajiks, Georgians, Azerbaijanis and others arrived in the last Soviet era, seeking opportunity at the privileged heart of the USSR. Using extensive oral histories as well as published and archival sources, this book shows how their energy transformed their own and their family's life chances and created inter-republican networks, altering life in the center and periphery alike. Citizens of the Soviet Union but often lacking residence papers required for their stay; denigrated as "Blacks" by some in the local population but accepted by others for their knowledge and goods; excited by their status as residents of the capital, but torn over attachments to an ethnic identity and home: these newcomers exemplify the ambiguities of the Soviet modernization and multinational project. This book connects Leningrad and Moscow to transnational trends of core-periphery movement and marks them as global cities. It examines Soviet concepts, such as the "friendship of peoples," alongside ethnic and national difference, which became racialized. It reveals the Brezhnev era as a time of dynamism and opportunity, and Leningrad and Moscow not as isolated outposts of privilege, but at the heart of any number of systems that linked the Soviet Union. In the 1980s, the Soviet Union crumbled from the outside in, and increased migration presaged perestroika-era tensions and shortages and, eventually, the USSR's collapse. These migrants were the forbears of the million-plus Muslims from the former Soviet spaces now in Leningrad and Moscow, who have confronted rampant racism in the 2000s"--

    Abstract: "Based on the comprehensive study of the epigraphic and literary evidence, this book challenges the almost universally-held assumptions of modern scholarship on the date of origin, the function, and the purpose of the Athenian ephebeia. It offers a detailed reconstruction of the institution, which in the fourth century BCE was a state-organized and -funded system of mandatory national service for ephebes, citizens in their nineteenth and twentieth years, consisting of garrison duty, military training, and civic education. It concludes that the contribution of the ephebeia was vital for the security of Attica and that the ephebes' non-military activities were moulded by social, economic, and religious influences which reflect the preoccupations of Lycurgus' administration in the 330s and 320s BCE." -- Publisher's description

Toby examines new discourses of identity and difference in early modern Japan, a discourse catalyzed by the 'Iberian irruption, ' the appearance of Portuguese and other new, radical others in the sixteenth century. The encounter with peoples and countries unimagined in earlier discourse provoked an identity crisis, a paradigm shift from a view of the world as comprising only 'three countries' (sangoku), i.e., Japan, China and India, to a world of 'myriad countries' (bankoku) and peoples. In order to understand the new radical alterities, the Japanese were forced to establish new parameters of difference from familiar, proximate others, i.e., China, Korea and Ryukyu.     Abstract: Der Umgang mit der Kolonialgeschichte, die hierzulande lange im Schatten der Aufarbeitung des Nationalsozialismus und des Holocaust stand, unterliegt gegenwärtig einem grundlegenden Wandel. Zwar zählt auch Deutschland faktisch zu den postkolonialen Gesellschaften Europas, doch ist diese Tatsache kaum in das Bewusstsein der Menschen und in das Handeln der Politik vorgedrungen. Der Sammelband zieht Bilanz und will zugleich die notwendige Auseinandersetzung um eine Dekolonisierung globaler wie lokaler Machtverhältnisse und eine Dekolonialisierung der immer noch dominierenden Wissens- und Deutungsmacht des "Westens" anregen. Die aktuellen Debatten um den Völkermord an den Herero und Nama oder die koloniale Beutekunst im geplanten Humboldt Forum in Berlin richten den Fokus ein ums andere Mal auf eine koloniale Vergangenheit, die nicht vergehen will
