    Abstract: NEUE PERSPEKTIVEN AUF DIE DEUTSCHE KOLONIALGESCHICHTE Die eigene Zeit als Kolonialmacht sei im Vergleich mit Ländern wie Frankreich oder Großbritannien kurz und relativ unproblematisch gewesen: So sah man es hierzulande lange. Doch das war ein Irrtum. Heute steht die deutsche koloniale Vergangenheit zu Recht im Zentrum kontrovers geführter Debatten über das koloniale Erbe in einer globalen Welt. Dieses Buch beleuchtet mit dem Auswärtigen Amt einen zentralen Akteur des deutschen Kolonialismus und spannt den Bogen vom Deutschen Kaiserreich bis weit ins 20. Jahrhundert hinein. Dabei richtet sich der Blick nicht nur auf Deutschland, sondern auch in die betroffenen Gesellschaften Afrikas, Asiens und Ozeaniens. Mit dem Versailler Vertrag von 1919 endete die formale deutsche Kolonialherrschaft. Doch koloniales Denken lebte in der Mitte der deutschen Ge sellschaft fort - so auch im Auswärtigen Amt, dem eine Mitverantwortung für Gewalt und Verbrechen in den deutschen Kolonien zukommt. Die Folgen seines Handelns sind noch bis in unsere Gegenwart spürbar. In der Zeit der NS-Diktatur verbanden sich nationalkonservative, monarchistische und antirepublikanische Haltungen im Auswärtigen Amt mit den expansionistischen und rassistischen Zielen des Nationalsozialismus. Ab 1949 prägten Indifferenz und Ignoranz, Passivität und Relativierung die bundesdeutsche Politik gegenüber den ehemaligen Kolonien im globalen Süden. Heute ist das Amt maßgeblich an Verhandlungen über Restitution und Wiedergutmachung beteiligt. Zudem wird es von einer diverser gewordenen deutschen Gesellschaft mit Fragen zur kolonialen Vergangenheit konfrontiert. Aus Gründen der historischen Gerechtigkeit, aber auch angesichts einer veränderten Weltlage muss sich das Amt seiner eigenen Kolonialgeschichte stellen.     Abstract: Schon vor 50 Jahren kämpfte Afrika um seine Kunst, die während der Kolonialzeit massenweise in europäische Museen gelangt war. Und es fand durchaus Unterstützung im Westen. Am Ende jedoch war der Kampf nicht nur vergebens, er wurde auch erfolgreich vergessen gemacht. Auf der Grundlage von unzähligen unbekannten Quellen aus Europa und Afrika erzählt Bénédicte Savoy die gespenstische Geschichte einer verpassten Chance, einer Niederlage, die heute mit umso größerer Wucht auf uns zurückschlägt. Afrikas Bemühungen um seine in der Kolonialzeit nach Europa verbrachte Kunst sind keineswegs neu. Schon bald nach 1960, als 18 ehemalige Kolonien die Unabhängigkeit erlangten, wurde von afrikanischen Intellektuellen, Politikern und Museumsleuten eine ungeheure Dynamik in Gang gesetzt. In ganz Europa suchten daraufhin Politikerinnen und Politiker, Journalisten, Akademiker und einige Museumsleute einen Weg, afrikanische Kulturgüter im Sinne einer postkolonialen und postrassistischen Solidarität zurückzugeben. Die Argumente aber, mit denen andere versuchten, die Forderungen aus Afrika zu entkräften und Lösungen zu verhindern, ähneln auf frappierende Weise denen von heute. Schließlich verlief alles im Sand. „Gebt koloniale Raubkunst zurück! Dafür engagiert sich Bénédicte Savoy. In ihrem Buch zeigt die Kunsthistorikerin nun, dass ihr Kampf ein alter ist. Schon in den 1960er-Jahren drängten die neu gegründeten Staaten Afrikas auf eine Rückführung – erfolglos.     Abstract: Die vorliegende Untersuchung entwickelt einen Vorschlag für ein neues Verständnis von Erwerbsarbeit vor dem Hintergrund ihres laufenden Wandels als Brennpunkt der gegenwärtigen tiefgreifenden Transformation westlicher kapitalistischer Gesellschaften. Die Bedeutung und Rolle von Arbeit für gelingende Lebensführung sowie für die Konstitution der Arbeitsgesellschaft als solcher sind hier unverständlich geworden; auf praktischer Ebene ergeben sich verschiedene Probleme und Gestaltungsschwierigkeiten von Arbeit als gesellschaftliche Institution und Praxis eines guten, menschenwürdigen Lebens. Diese Bedeutung wird in der Untersuchung als moralischer Wert von Arbeit als Kern eines dauerhaft aneignungsfähigen, formalen Arbeitsverständnisses herausgearbeitet. Ihren Erscheinungen und Bedingungen nach wird die Arbeitsgesellschaft als subjektiviert und – im begrifflichen Anschluss an die nach Hegel entwickelte Beschreibung gesellschaftlicher Krisen Rahel Jaeggis – mithin als krisenhaft qualifiziert. Diese Darstellung ermöglicht es, vor einer Neuinterpretation des Hegelschen Arbeitsverständnisses im Anschluss an Andreas Arndt den wesenhaften normativen Gehalt und die normative Dimension von Arbeit offenzulegen, die auf praktischer Ebene ihren moralischen Wert stiften: Ausgehend von ihrer transformativen Grundstruktur, dialektischen Verfassung und teleologischen Gerichtetheit ist Arbeit Institution und Praxis der Selbstverwirklichung des Subjekts unter ganz bestimmten Bedingungen. Wo deshalb allein Narrative (nicht Begriffe) von Arbeit, die dieses Wesen vermitteln, aneignungsfähig sind, lassen sich diese Bedingungen im Nachvollzug der Genese unseres Arbeitsverständnisses sowie in der kritischen Zusammenführung von aktuellen sozial- und moralphilosophischen Auseinandersetzungen mit Arbeit schließlich so offenlegen, dass das hier formal gefasste Arbeitsverständnis aktuell für die praktischen Belange der Krise und für die interdisziplinären Fragen an Arbeit aufschlussreich ist.
    Abstract: The present study develops a proposal for a new understanding of paid work in view of its current transformation, which is considered as the focal point of the current fundamental transformation of western capitalist societies. The significance and role of work for a Good life and for the constitution of society have become unintelligible here; on a practical level, there are various problems and difficulties of work as a social institution and practice of a Good, Decent life. The present study shows this meaning as the Moral Value of work, which is shown as the core of a permanent approbiatible, formal understanding of work. According to its current manifestations and conditions, western capitalist societies can be qualified as subjectivized and - in the conceptual connection to the description of social crises, which Rahel Jaeggi developed according to Hegel - as crisis-ridden. This diagnosis makes it possible, via reinterpreting Hegel's understanding of work following Andreas Arndt, to reveal the essential normative content and the normative dimension of work; also to show that both creates the Moral Value of work on a practical level: Work is - based on its transformative basic structure, its dialectical constitution and its teleological directionality - the institution and practice of self-realization of the subject under very specific conditions. Where exclusively narratives (not concepts) of work that convey these intrinsic qualities are approbiatible, these conditions can be finally revealed by retracing the evolution of our understanding of work and in discussing the current social- and moral-philosophical argument with work: Finally in a way that the unfolded formally understanding of work is revelatory for the practical and interdisciplinary questions about of work.

In the case of Japan, these frictions have manifested themselves as historical issues. The history since World War II has also been a history of trying to overcome the hostility surrounding these issues. Since the end of the war there have been various attempts at reconciliation, and indeed, periods in which Japan has enjoyed good relations with China and also with South Korea. Despite that, historical issues have overheated in the twenty-first century, and their effects may extend beyond Japan's relations with China and South Korea to impact its relations with the United States, Southeast Asia, and Europe. --

    Abstract: "Rights Make Might examines why the three most salient minority groups in Japan all expanded their activism since the late 1970s and chronicles the galvanizing effects of global human rights ideas and institutions on local social movements. The prehistory of the three groups reveals that minority politics in Japan before the 1970s featured politically dormant Ainu - an indigenous people in northern Japan -, active but unsuccessful Koreans - a stateless colonial legacy group -, and active and established Burakumin - a former outcaste group that still faced social discrimination. Despite the unfavorable domestic political environment, the infusion of global human rights ideas and the opening of international human rights arenas as new venues for contestation transformed minority activists' movement actorhood, or subjective understanding about their position and entitled rights in Japan, as well as the views of the Japanese public and political establishment toward those groups, thus catalyzing substantial gains for all three groups. Having benefited from global human rights, all three groups also repaid their debt by contributing to the consolidation and expansion of global human rights principles and instruments. Drawing on interviews and archival data, Rights Make Might offers a detailed historical and comparative analysis of the co-constitutive relationship between international human rights activities and local politics that contributes to our understanding of international norms, multilateral institutions, social movements, human rights, and ethno-racial politics."

Alle Texte sind mit Kommentaren und Annotationen versehen und werden in einem einleitenden Aufsatz in den Gesamtkontext der Debatte um Wissenschaft, Philosophie und Religion von der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts bis heute gestellt.     Abstract: The term 'Taoism of Clarified Tenuity' designates a new branch of religious Taoism developed since the 13/14th century by priests of the long-established Heavenly Masters Taoism. They claimed to continue Taoist exorcist traditions that since the Sung-period especially flourished because emperor Sung Hui-tsung (r. 1100?1126) appreciated the exorcism of 'Taoism of the Divine Empyrean' and 'Five Thunders rituals'. The purpose of the exorcist rituals was the expulsion of demoniac molestations, relief from droughts and inundations, and the healing of illnesses. Outstanding priests rationalized the exorcist practice, using theories of a meditative self-cultivation which peaked in the transformation into a Thunder divinity. The priest adopted a divine 'alter ego' for the time of the ritual. 'Taoism of Clarified Tenuity' developed on the basis of these traditions and embraced regionally different religious habits. It adopted and adapted older cults, partly including Buddhist-Tantric practices. Leading priests of 'Clarified Tenuity' presented theoretical essays, discussing the requirements of the personal cultivation of the Taoist to be a worthy performer of exorcism who was entitled to write and use amulets. The amulet was the essential ritual tool. However, the amulets of 'Clarified Tenuity' were remarkably different from the older 'Thunder' amulets of the Sung era. Also, the new branch adopted different attitudes concerning ritual practices such as the transformation into a divinity.0The book features developments of the more recent Taoist history and presents content and intention of 'Taoism of Clarified Tenuity'. The selected canonical texts also show that the priests of 'Clarified Tenuity' insisted on a clear distinction between exorcism in Heavenly Masters Taoism and shamanism that they disavowed. The book presents and analyses several 'Great Rituals' of 'Clarified Tenuity' and features elements of religious Taoism that today can still be traced

    Abstract: In this innovative legal history of economic life in the Western Indian Ocean, Bishara examines the transformations of Islamic law and Islamicate commercial practices during the emergence of modern capitalism in the region. In this time of expanding commercial activity, a mélange of Arab, Indian, Swahili and Baloch merchants, planters, jurists, judges, soldiers and seamen forged the frontiers of a shared world. The interlinked worlds of trade and politics that these actors created, the shared commercial grammars and institutions that they developed and the spatial and socio-economic mobilities they engaged in endured until at least the middle of the twentieth century. This study examines the Indian Ocean from Oman to India and East Africa over an extended period of time, drawing together the histories of commerce, law and empire in a sophisticated, original and richly textured history of capitalism in the Islamic world

    Abstract: Women Judges in the Muslim World: A Comparative Study of Discourse and Practice' fills a gap in academic scholarship by examining public debates and judicial practices surrounding the performance of women as judges in eight Muslim-majority countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Syria, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Morocco). Gender, class, and ethnic biases are inscribed in laws, particularly in the domain of shari'a-derived family law. Editors Nadia Sonneveld and Monika Lindbekk have carefully woven together the extensive fieldwork and expertise of each author. The result is a rich tapestry that brings out the various effects of women judges in the management of justice.     Abstract: This volume is an updated and expanded version of the authors original book, first published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers and based on his cum laude doctoral dissertation. That volume discussed how the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence drowned in the first war between a communist and a non-aligned state. This new edition reproduces the original text, but supplements it considerably in light of subsequent developments and official records and reports only later released or leaked to the public. It places Sino-Indian relations in the wider, current context of the rise of China, the position of Tibet and the disorganised state of Asia. The border dispute did not prevent substantial economic relations developing between the two countries and visits taking place at the highest political level. But it still gives rise to almost daily incursions, and in the current climate, the risk of a clash is growing, as forces have been strengthened and most of the Line of Actual Control has not been demarcated. This thought-provoking volume sheds light on what is still a complex and uneasy relationship
